Tirreno - Adriatico
While I was in France another team was in Italy for Tirreno – Adriattico, where Jesper Hansen and Thomas Löfkvist should chase a good result in the GC.
On the first stage Jesper and Jeppe showed that they actually can TT. As long as there’s a mountain on the route at least.
Still they were not quite as fast as Löfkvist. In fact no one was as fast as Thomas! I guess placing 1st 3rd and 4th on the mountain prologue makes everyone look at us for the next few days…
On stage two we protected the jersey through an alliance with the sprinters teams.
An amazing effort by the whole team, but especially Jeppe delivered Thomas and Jesper in a perfect position on the big mountain stage. And they paid back their teammates by pulling the peloton apart and finishing 1-2 on the mountain top!
Stage 4 went more or less the same way except we allowed a breakaway to take the stage win and some of the competition was actually ready for the challenge…
Stage five was a classic sprinters stage, which means our guys got to take a well-earned day off.
On the main TT of the race Thomas had to defend his 1st place ahead of Fränk Shleck. That proved just as easy as expected as he gained about a minute on Fränk.
Jesper did good as well defending his GC 3rd. Also note that Rabobank took care of the first three places on the stage!
To finish it off we had a hectic stage 7 with a lot of small steep hills. Just the terrain Schleck likes…
For us the only important thing on that stage was the GC. That allowed us to force other teams to do all the chasing of the break. We managed to control everything right up until the last hill, where Jesper Hansen tried to get away to steal some time from Schleck.
Unfortunately Schleck proved the strongest on the hills and instead Jesper lost his 3rd place to Di Gregorio by chasing the 2nd place.
Unfortunately the GC-defence also cost Löfkvist the mountain jersey to one of the breakaway riders. That must be the first mountain jersey won by Daniele Bennati!
Stage 1: Löfkivst (Volvo) / Rubiano / Nielsen
Stage 2: Kittel (Rabobank) / Swift / Greipel
Stage 3: Hansen (Volvo) / Löfkvist / Di Gregorio
Stage 4: Gilbert (OPQS) / Velasco / Masciarelli
Stage 5: Farrar (Nissan) / Kittel / Sagan
Stage 6: Cancellara (Rabobank) / Boom / Westra
Stage 7: Schleck (Colombia) / Gilbert / Löfkvist

Jakstar: In deed it was. GC 1st and 4th, the points jersey, youth jersey and team classification will certainly make the team celebrate!
Ian: It was amazing to see the peloton cracked to our train thanks to great work by the whole team sharing the workload. It seemed like everyone except us were waiting for the last mountain...

Nokere – Koerse
Partly a test for the cobble-squad partly preparation for Milano – Sanremo and a race where everyone is allowed to chase their own chance.
A hectic race ended in a sprint from a strongly reduced peloton, where both Eddy and Matti showed themselves very ready for Milano – Sanremo

yeah, yeah. Think I was wondering why there were so few Belgians in the top 10 and clicked on the flag I was thinking about
Belgium has plenty of talent already, so they're not getting Eddy!

Milano - Sanremo
This is an impossible race to control, but we want to win it! Our best bids are Boasson Hagen and Breschel, who are both in top shape.
Eddy won the race for Sky two years ago and it is a race that should suit Matti perfectly though he has never before had it as a main target.
The early break has right about 0 % chance of success in Milano – Sanremo. That doesn’t stop 11 riders from going out there though. The biggest name in the group is Valverde.
With 100 km to go they have just about 7 minutes.
On La Mànie we put on the pressure trying to catch some of the competition unaware. Several riders are badly placed, but no one important gets lost behind early on.
Going into the last 50 km the attacking begins from the peloton. Even though we don’t expect it to amount to much Löfkvist is told to cover the breaks at this point.
Right after the passing of Cipressa 62 riders remain in the front group. All the big names are still in the group
Nissan have something similar to a leadout train in line heading into the Poggio.
Surprisingly nothing really happens on Poggio except that sprinters like Kittel, Greipel and Farrar move up near the front.
That’s not exactly the finish we want so just before the top Breschel takes his chance with an attack.
He quickly gets a good gap along with Offredo. Not a bad rider to have by his side for the finish as Matti should be the fastest of the two.
Going in to the last 2 km Offredo has not left Mattis wheel for as much as a moment.
Matti keeps his patience and waits until Offredo opens the sprint right under la flame rouge and counters for a clean two-rider sprint.
Right behind Edvald tries to win the sprint against Farrar and Kittel without pushing up the speed enough to catch Breshcel ahead
What an unbelievable day for the team!
Matti takes the win and Eddy gets 5th place in the first monument of the season!
We came to win and that is what we did!
A brilliant ride by the whole team allowing Matti to steal the win ahead of the pure sprinters. Guess he regrets now that he hasn't really tried for Milano - Sanremo before in his career...
