Went out for 20 miles today. Was going to go longer, but some asshole decided to throw trash in the road, and my rear tire blew out...

30km headwinds going up the climb, some fun on the way down. Good solid ride. I really need to get rid off my bike, hauling 17kg up decent climbs isnt what l call fun. |

Hey guys, I usually I don't post around here but here goes anyway.
I'm 15 and about to join my first real race which includes a 20 KM TT, 50 KM crit, and a 100 Km race with 20 Km climb(avg: 6% max: 18%) and finishes with a 5 Km climb(avg: 16% max: 32%) I'm reaaally nervous and any tips would be appreciated |

Not that it's very relevant or that her current performances are worth anything at the moment, but I had the chance to train with an Olympic Champion yesterday (I'm a runner these days) in the person of the female points race Olympic Champion (at Atlanta). She doesn't really look like what she looked at the time.
***
Anyway, yesterday I came up with a formula (that I knew for a while), in the Cali thread, linking power to speed and frontal surface.
0,9 P = 0,5.rau.SCx.V^3
rau is air density (kg/m3, it's commonly 1,2), P is power (90% is used to beat air density on the flat, the remaining 10 is for mechanical resistance), SCx is the frontal surface in m², and V is the speed in metres/second.
I toyed with the formula a bit, just to draw some comparisons...
Rider 1 would be me.
I managed a TT at 41,7 km/h, with an average power around 300 W (4,1 W/kg during 30 minutes).
Do the math, and my frontal surface was 0,290 m² (bike included). I had no extender, disc wheel or TT helmet (normal bike minus one bottle cage). I did most of the ride with my hands down the bars and an almost horizontal back (I have a good position on the bike, generally speaking).
Rider 2 would be a TT winner in a Grand Tour. Let's say 80 kg and 6,2 W/kg during 40 minutes (that must be close to the truth), 500 W then, for, say 53 km/h.
Do the math again and the frontal surface is 0,235 m².
Let's say our very favourite Andy Schleck would be rider 3, weighing 64 kg, riding at 47,5 km/h (that'd put him 4 minutes down) and managing 6,1 W/kg (390 W) during that time.
Frontal surface : 0,255 m².
That gives you an idea of how bad Schleck's position is.
And if I could have used extenders I'd probably have been able to gain 0,4 or 0,5 km/h (SCx = 0,28, random figure), which means 20 seconds.

U17 races with 20km TTs, 100kms stages and 32% max climbs? Any race website or stage details?

That look like a cracking little ride buddy, well done!!!
Pick up my new bike tomorrow (Giant TCR Advanced 1)which is great timing as my rear mech snapped off my current bike today, heading up a climb and Crack! the hanger snapped off and chain went in all different ways. All fixable but a it was a long freewheel back to somewhere populated.

Don't really know the best thread to post this so I guess this is okay maybe:
I was wondering if someone could tell me something. On the one hand you have a rider like Gilbert, an incredible puncher, who flies in the Ardennes, but will never win on the Mont Ventoux.
On the other hand, Betancur, who is also an amazing puncher, but climbs incredibly strong, too. You could say he's a bit like Gilbert + a climber.
So I wonder, does Betancur have any disadvantage in another way or Gilbert an advantage in some way? Because it's so odd that Betancur can (almost) do what Gilbert does in the hills but he can climb so strong, too. Hope you know what I mean. |

Well, Gilbert can cobble, Betancur can't. |

Try to imagine what their max power would be on different lengths, then do the same but divide their power per their assumed weight.
I guess that'll give you an idea.
Check page 5 :
https://www.freder...ie/SV3.pdf
I'd say Gilbert (or any typical puncher) has a lot of raw power, especially on effort that last 1 to 5 minutes. He can also maintain a huge number of W/kg during that time.
He's decent in terms of power during one or two hour (he's a capable TTist), but much less impressive if you were to divide that power per his weight.
Betancur (or any non-Diesel climber) on the other hand has less raw power on any length of time, but highest figures of W/kg on 20+ minutes.
He's still able to attack in the mountains because he's doing less of an effort than most of his opponents, so he's fresher. That's why seeing him attack doesn't necessarily prove he's outstanding on a one to five minutes period in terms of W/kg compared to an actual puncher.

Very nice bike. I bought mine 2 years ago as a first bike (Wanted my first bike to be good an last me a while) and i've still never had any problems with it. Very smooth.

Been out for my first ride following a nasty crash last month which left in hospital for a few days, only did 45km but it was nice to get back out and was quite pleased to manage an average of 34km/h

Good to know that you're back. Never easy to come back from a serious crash.
I was out for 6 weeks last year after a serious concussion from a mountain bike crash. It was the national marathon champs and I was chasing a guy down some single track when my front wheel slipped and I literally fell on my face. I got up immediately and didn't know where I was. Another 2 crashes later I arrived at the finish My dad (a doctor) had to straighten my nose as it was broken (or at least the cartilage was skew)! We flew back home that evening and I got onto the plane with a bruised face and all Gotta love mountain bike
