The Clásica San Sebastián is traditionally held the Saturday after the Tour de France. This year is the 32nd edition, with Marino Lejaretta being the record winner with 3 wins. Riders that had a good Tour de France traditionally perform well here, so did Alberto Contador last year, winning both the Tour and the Clasica.
The route, 232 kilometres long, is characterised by the ascend (2 times) of the Alto de Jaizkibel (8.7km at 5.3%) and the Alto de Arkale (2.3km at 7.4%).
The favourites *** Cadel Evans (Katusha), Peter Sagan, Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin) **Robert Gesink, Luis Leon Sánchez (Rabobank), Simon Gerrans (Qantas) * Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha), Igor Antón (Euskaltel), Jelle Vanendert
Our goals
With a strong hilly squad, and a good form, we'll aim for a top 3.
95km to go
9 riders form the BOTD and one of them is a Monster Energy-rider. With 95km to go, during the first ascend of the Alto de Jaizkibel, Rob Ruijgh, Andrey Kasechkin (Lampre), Óscar Pujol (Lotto), Tom Jelte Slagter, Maarten Wynants & Rick Flens (Rabobank), Cyril Dessel (AG2R), D. Fofonov (Astana) and A. Bajadali (Garmin) have a lead of 7'25 to the peloton.
48km to go
In the next 47 kilometres, the peloton decreases the gap to the leading group with 4 and a half minutes. There are still 9 riders in the lead, but Rick Flens have been switched with Christian Knees (Sky).
29km to go
Before the last ascend of the Alto de Arkale, the peloton is only 52 seconds behind the leaders. This is the sign for many, many, many riders to attack: Pierre Rolland, Ryder Hesjedal, Amets Txurruka, Cadel Evans and Andreas Klöden are a few names. But because all the attacks, riders falling back again, riders getting blocked, and the BOTD getting caught, we loose the overview, and that is not a good sign....
23km to go
And after 6 kilometres of attacking riders, and finishing the Alto de Arkale, this is the situation: Cadel Evans and Ryder Hesjedal are in the lead, followed by several small groups. And our riders? Nowhere to been seen...
9km to go
Cadel Evans drops Hesjedal in the next kilometres, and is in the lead with 9km to go. He is followed by a 15-man group at '20 and the first from our team, Vanendert & Gesink follow at 1'33.
6km to go
Evansis joined by Luis León Sánchez with 6km to go, and together, they have a good chance in beating the chasing group, whom are only '12 behind.
2km to go
The 14 chasers can't find the right cooperation, and are still '19 behind LLS and Evans with only 2km remaining.
Finish
Sánchez starts the sprint in the lead, with Evans in the perfect position. And the Aussie continues his winning streak (4 stage wins in the Tour) and wins the Clasica. LLS gets 2nd, and Ryder Hesjedal wins the sprint for the 3rd place. Jelle Vanendert is the best from our team, in 17th position at 1'00.

Today's winner
Word from the DS
This was a classic example of collective team failure. Having a few good hilly riders in the team, we all missed the decisive moves....
FreitasPCM wrote:
That was quite a disappointing performance, your team was nowhere to be seen today. :/
I know...... My tactic was not to react at the first attack of the favourites, but within a few seconds, there were riders attacking all over the place, and I simply couldn't chase them....
Anyway, I'm back from a midweek holiday with my wife to Barcelona. Visited the Sagrada Familia (such a beautiful modern church, with all the light in it), Camp Nou (mas que un club!) and eat some delicious tapas. But you gotta love Gaudi to completely enjoy the city, and we didn't . But had some great days!
Results
Again, it was a very good month for us. Robert Gesink won a stage, the KOTM-rankings and the 3rd place in Le Tour, Jens Keukeleire won a stage in the Tour de Wallonie and Jelle Vanendert won the Ordiziako Klasika.
Media-awards
He didn't win the Tour, but Cadel Evans won 4 stages and the Clasica San Sebastian.
Rankings
World Tour riders
After the win in Le Tour, Vincenzo Nibali takes over the lead, followed by Phillipe Gilbert and Igor Antón. Robert Gesink is in 6th.
World Tour teams
Radio Shack is still in the lead, but now with a gap of almost 300 points to Lotto. Monster Energt has entered the Top 3 again.
Continental Tour riders
No changes: Bonnet leading Casper and Coppel.
Continental Tour teams
Also no changes here: Saur leading Landbouwkrediet and FDJ. Also Pisanellastoria has reached the 1000-points mark.
CQ riders
A few changes: Nibali is the new leader, and Antón has passed Gilbert to take the 2nd place. Andy Schleck is in 4th.
CQ teams
We still lead the CQ teams-ranking, followed by Radi oShack and Lotto.
Wins riders
The Top 3 has stayed the same.
Wins teams
We won 3 races and stay in the lead with 28. Radio Shack have closed the gap to 2 (4 wins), and Qantas has a great Österreich Rundfahrt with a few stage wins and the GC, and are also at 26 wins this year.
The only common things are the 2 wheels and the fact that sometimes a hero gives his life to the sport.... R.i.p. Marco Simoncelli
August is a busy month, with the Tour de Pologne and the Eneco Tour. 20 August starts the Vuelta a Espana, the third GT of the year. Also, other one day reces are held, included the World Tour races Vattenfall Cyclassics and GP Ouest Plouay.
Our goals:
- Top 5 in Poland and Eneco.
- Win the Vuelta
- 2 wins in the other races (stage, GC, or single race)
Edited by dienblad on 24-02-2012 23:37
Before we start the races in August, the Monster Energy - Ford cycling team is pleased to announce the signing of two young Benelux riders.
First, Dutch Dirk van Dongen is a 21-year-old rider out of Limburg (same province as Rob Ruijgh), with the focus at time trialling (52, but all stars left!), prologue riding and cobbling.
Secondly, Gregory Bernard is a signing we are very proud of. This 22-yearold Luxembourg rider has an impressive palmares with the U23 this year: stage and GC in the Giro delle Regioni, 3rd in Liege - Bastogne - Liege and a stage and 3rd in the GC of the Tour de l'Isard. He also leads the U23-rankings this year! Bernard is focussed at the hilly and mountainous terrain. Edited by dienblad on 24-02-2012 23:43
Entering August, I'll give you the most important transfers:
Samuel Sánchez, the number 4 of Le Tour, leaves the Euskaltel-team and will ride for Lampre - Generali next year. WIth this transfers, he feeds the rumours that Euskaltel will quit after this season.
Sánchez in, Damiano Cunego out. The number 2 of the Amstel and number 3 of Liege, leaves the Lampre-team and joins Radio Shack.
Another new signing for Radio Shack: Bradley Wiggins believes he can win Le Tour while riding for Radio Shack and leaves Sky.
With Cunego and Wiggins coming in, Fränk Schleck leaves The Shack. He will join the Omega Pharma - Quick Step team (and replaces Levi Leipheimer, who goes back to Radio Shack).
Also some transfers among the top sprinters:
After one season with Qantas, Matthew Goss leaves the team and joins Lotto - Belisol. The rumour goes he leaves becaue of the signing of an other world class sprinter!
And that sprinter is André Greipel. He leaves Sony Ericsson, and joins the superb train of Team Qantas.
Also wonder talent Edvald Boasson Hagen leaves Sony Ericsson. EBH joins.... Lotto! He becomes the new team member of Matthew Goss.
Many expected him to retire after the season, but Alessandro Petacchi continues his career. He does it in the shirt of BMC.
The most important World Tour race in August as a preparation for the Vuelta is the Tour de Pologne. It's the 69th edition of the only Eastern European World Tour race.
Last year, the race was won by French Sylvain Chavanel, beating Vasil Kiryienka and Thomas Voeckler.
The route
The Tour de Pologne starts with 4 races designed for sprinter. Nevertheless, the hills in the middle of the 4th stage will split the sprinters into better and weaker climbers.
The last 3 stages will decide the GC. They're classified as hilly, but all 3 have a mountain top finish. A rider that is a good puncheur, as well as a good climber can win this Tour de Pologne
The favourites ***Andy Schleck, Roman Kreuziger (Astana), Philippe Gilbert (BMC) ** Grega Bole (Lampre), Jelle Vanendert, Geraint Thomas (Sky) * Carlos Barredo (Rabobank), Janez Brajkovic (Radio Shack)
Sprinters
Tyler Farrar, Mark Cavendish, André Greipel, Marcel Kittel, Thor Hushovd, Koldo Fernández.
Our goals
- Stage win
- Win the KOTM-ranking
- Top 3 in GC
The Tour de Pologne kicks off with a 170 kilometre long stage from Hel to Gdynia. It's almost flat, so expect a mass sprint.
71km to go
7 riders are alone out front in the Polish land. They battle for the KOTM-points at today's only categorized climb, so the winner of the sprint will wear the KOTM-jersey for the next 3 stages (as there are no more KOTM-points in stage 2 and 3).
Aidis Kruopis from Team Qantas takes the points, followed by Jos van Emden (Rabobank) and Hayden Roulston (Radio Shack). The other members of tis BOTD are Koldo Fernández (Euskaltel), Maxim Vantomme (Katusha), Gorik Gardeyn (Vacansoleil) and Pablo Lastras (Movistar). They have a lead of 4'39 to the peloton.
15km to go
But of course, the peloton has everything under control. WIth 15km to go, the 7 are about to get caught, when Jos van Emden gives it one last try. But you can guess the outcome...
2km to go
It's going to be a mass sprint. Thanks to firstly Jack Bobridge and secondly Sébastien Rosseler, last lead out Sep Vanmarcke is in a perfect position as the front rider of the peloton with less than 2km to go. This is the moment for our sprinter Marcel Kittel to launch his jump.
1km to go Kittel has created a bike-length-lead entering the last kilometre. But Thor Hushovd and Krzysztof Szczawinski (CCC) are close. Can our German sprinter keep the lead?
Finish
The biggest threat to prevent Kittel from winning doesn't come from Hushovd, Farrar, Greipel or Cavendish, but from a Japanes guy!
Yukiya Arashiro, who's Europcar entered the Tour de Pologne with a wildcard, comes very close at the finish. Is it enough?
Yes, after 51 races jn this season without a win, Marcel Kittel beats some world class sprinters and wins the opening stage of the Tour de Pologne, his first win of the season.
Arashiro finishes surprisingly in second, Hushovd in third, in front of Petacchi, Greipel, Freire, Farrar and Cavendish!!

Word from the DS
Kittel gives the team a perfect start of the Tour de Pologne, but the credits also have to go to Bobridge, Rosseler and Vanmarcke, for bringing him in a perfect position.
