Contador won the Giro today. At least, he didn't take the stage win.

Leipheimer is off form. he's been designated team leader for the Dauphiné: his objective. |

In other news, 6 riders didn't make the time cut:
Raivis Belohvosciks - Saunier Duval - Scott 51.18
Mathew Hayman - Rabobank 51.19
Paolo Bossoni - Lampre 51.41
Christopher Sutton - Slipstream Chipotle Presented By H30 52.35
Lander Aperribay - Euskaltel - Euskadi 52.40
Thomas Fothen - Gerolsteiner 53.48
That leaves Gerolsteiner with just two riders |

I will never understand Bruyneel..man dont know numbers..who is team leader. In TdF and now in Giro...he has learned something Armstrong is always nr. 1 he got that one. |

Jurgen Van Den Broeck from my country, still in top 10 in the Giro! That's just awesome!!! In a few years Belgium might have a top GC guy again (Eddy Merckx was probably the last one...) |

I remember a certain Wim Van Huffel who also made the Belgians scream: "We have a new Merckx!", but oh well ... |

Why will contador win? i mean ricco certainly looked like he was up to the challenge! i dont think its a forgone conclusion yet. shame about the poor performance of liephiemer and kloden. I thought he was supposed to be in form for this giro.

I certainly wouldn't take out Menchov yet either... That man can pull an amazing TT when he needs so. He can't take 3mins I know, but the way he looked on the first mountainstage, he could also take a minute or so in the mountains... |

honestly, I doubt it.
for two reasons:
1. Menchov tends to fade quite a lot towards the end of three-week races.
2. These aren't the steady incline 6-7-8% tour mountains. these are the giro's mountains, much more steep and where the incline is much less steady, where getting into a rhythm is very difficult. And Menchov's gigantic climbing gears are a big problem for him here.

yes menchov is the kind of big chunky climber that means he doestn just get out of the saddle every 2 seconds, he stays in the saddle and keeps his pace steady and at a high tempo, although this means he can keep going, it means that he really suffers when the gradient is all over the place and everyone starts attacking. I think he will do better in the TDF which is what hes aiming for!

btw verbrugghe managed to get a top 10 place in the giro a couple of years ago I never believe Vandenbroeck will be a top GC guy. If you watch his results over the last few years, this is really the only impressive results so far. Moreover, given the evolution of this Giro, and the top field which was not so top after all (still italians and grandpa Simoni ruling, grandpa cardenas in top 15), I don't think he'll have a better career then, let's say, Rik Verbrugghe, who was 9th a few years ago.
The Giro and the Vuelta are not the Tour. Just riding top 10/or just oustide (like Monfort, Devolder in Vuelta and earlier Van Huffel/Brandt i nthe Giro) in these tours doesn't mean much. I won't be convinced of Vandenbroeck until he finally wins a 1-week tour or rides a good Tour de France
