This very exciting Tour de France will be decided in the final individual time trial of 53 kilometres between Cerilly and Saint-Amand-Montrond.
We'll continue immediately to the contenders for the stage win. Tony Martin, who won the first ITT, is about 1'30 faster than the current best time set by Christian Vandevelde. The German needs 1h14'51 for the 53 kilometres.
Time trial world champ Fabian Cancellara has a declining form level, and finishes 1'32 behind Martin. That's a pretty big gap!
Luis Leon Sánchez is even faster than Cancellara, 2nd at 1'10.
Andreas Klöden sets the 4th time so far in 1h16'25.
Bradley Wiggins needs only '7 to improve to 7th in the GC and '34 to improve to the 6th place. The Brit does this easily: 1h15'53, 2nd time so far.
Denis Menchov had a few bad days, loosing valuable time, but restores himself in the ITT with the 4th time so far, 1'29 behind Martin.
Samuel Sánchez won't end this Tour as the number 3, like last year. But he can be satisfied with the 4th place. He ends the ITT as 25th in 1h17'56.
The situation before the Top 3 starts:
1. Gesink; 2. Nibali at '26; 3. Evans at 1'05.
First split time
Cadel Evans has to ride the ITT of his life, and for sure, the first part he does it. At the first split time, he is even '10 faster than Martin, 22'11.
Vincenzo Nibali also starts very fast, only '8 behind Evans.
And Gesink? As he has seen his team mates go dead in the last part of the route, he starts a little bit slow, to save some energy for the final (and most hilly) kilometres. But it's too slow! 53rd time, 1'36 behind Evans.
So the virtual GC:
1. Nibali; 2. Evans at '31; 3. Gesink at '58
This will continue later tonight. Stay tuned!

That's a pretty big gap.
Hope this tendency will turn. |

Second spilt time
Of course, Cadel Evans arrives as first at the second split point. He doesn't set the fastest time, loosing '19 to him, and '9 behind.
Vincenzo Nibali looses ground to Evans. It was 8 seconds, and now it is 19 seconds. But Cadel needs '39 to overtake Nibali.
Robert Gesink has turned up the pace a bit and improved from the 53rd time to the 23rd time. But he's 2'06 behind Evans and 1'47 behind Nibali...........
Virtual GC:
1. Nibali; 2. Evans at '20; 3rd Gesink at 1'21.

But the impossible happens: Cadel Evans rides a faster ITT than Tony Martin (stats: Martin 84 and Evans 79, of course...). New best time: 1h14'41.
This means that Vincenzo Nibali needs a time faster than 1h15'20 to be the new virtual leader in the Tour de France 2012.
And he does it! 1h15'09, 11 seconds left!
Robert Gesink has to do the impossible in the last sector of the time trial. When he finishes, he knows it isn't enough: 1h17'01. Being dead tired, given it for the full 100%, it simply wasn't enough to win the Tour....

Today's winner
Word from the DS
We can't blame Gesink, we gave it all and was dead empty at the finish. His daily form wasn't good enough (0), whereas Evans and Nibali must have got a super day....

3rd is great, but there is only one solution:
TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN!!!
Just make sure this doesn't happen to Andy in the Vuelta

It was really hard for Gesink... And, again, the final time trial is the main obstacle for your riders... :/ |

Not completely.... Schleck lost the Giro at the Stelvio, he regained time in the final TT....
But you're right that timetrialling is, besides sprinting, my weakest point in PCM....

Great Tour but why does TT exist? WHY?
WHY do we always lose the Tour in the TT?
And Gesink with 77 TT lost the tour, imagine how much time Andy would have lost if he came to the Tour. |

Too bad! But 3rd is still a great result. Great Tour by your team. |

Ah, yes, I remember that now... Still, hope you can have better luck in Spain. |

What a shame for Gesink to lose it on a TT after such great riding throughout the Tour |

Andy for the Tour and Gesink for Giro/Vuelta
Guess who's back?
Lets see how many friens are still around...

@ all: Thanks a lot for your comments! I'll keep on trying to win the Tour, one day in my PCM-career, I'll win it!!
@ alexanderlens: it all depends on the variants of the GT's. The more TT-kilometres, the bigger the chance Gesink will ride it instead of Schleck...

Great Tour, really well written. So gutted to hear that Gesink wasn't able to make it. You just have to keep him at his time trial training. |
