Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era
alexanderlens
Still on +18"! Good job and look out for evans
Guess who's back? Smile
Lets see how many friens are still around...

Miguel98
One advice for sprints: one get to hill try not to waste your rider, try putting him to rest, basically reduce his effort, and then pull it up in the descend, works for me.

Schleck96
It's going to be decided in the alpe d'huez

FreitasPCM
Gesink lost no time for Nibali, and is still on the fight. Smile As for the sprints, there must be some kind of curse that makes your riders lose energy in the final kms. :/

2nd rest day, in beautiful Italy.

Positives
- It's still incredible close for the GC, with 3 riders within 22 seconds, and the 4th, and best time-trialist, at 1'03.
- A lot of surprising winners.
- Monster with the U25-jersey (and 3rd in the KOTM)

Negatives
- No stage wins for us so far.

After a day of rest, the peloton heads back to France, over the Col de la Lombarde (20.2km at 7.2%). The highest mountain pass in Europe has to be climb today. The Col de la Bonette-Restefond (23.8km at 6.5%) has an altitude of 2802 metres, and it's the highest point a World Tour race has ever been. After the summit, a 24-km descend awaits towards Jausiers.

img38.imageshack.us/img38/2418/coldelabonetterestefond.jpg
img52.imageshack.us/img52/2553/jausiers.jpg

100km to go
A 11-man big BOTD is formed and in it are some riders of the Top 25 of the GC. Besides Gasparotto, Langeveld, Montaguti, Scheirlinckx, Demaret, Vicioso and Kozontchuk, also Simon Spilak (Lampre, 25), Chris Anker Sorensen (Saxo Bank, 24), Matthias Frank (BMC, 21) and Nicholas Roche (AG2R, 20) are present.
They have created a 3'21-gap at the foot of today's first climb, the Col de la Lombarde.
img685.imageshack.us/img685/9840/1100km.jpg

79km to go
At the summit, at an altitude of 2351 metres above sea level, only the last 4, the best climbers in the leading group, are still in the lead. Roche, Sorensen, Spilak and Frank have extended their lead to 6'21, mainy because Radio Shack didnt want to make a high pace in the ascend.
img834.imageshack.us/img834/5624/279km.jpg

57km to go
When the peloton has finished the descend into France, 3 riders go in the counter attack. Chris Froome, Levi Leipheimer (GC's 16) and Vasil Kiryienka try to close the gap to the 4 leaders, although they are 6'21 in front.
img35.imageshack.us/img35/1943/357km.jpg

32km to go
8 kilometres before the summit of the Bonette-Restefond, Samuel Sánchez (GC's nr. 5) attacks. Only Bradley Wiggins (GC's nr. 6) reacts. This happens still 6 minutes behind the leaders.
img684.imageshack.us/img684/53/432km.jpg

29km to go
Spilak, Roche and Frank have dropped Sorensen. Froome, Leipheimer and Kiryienka follow at 4'00, Sánchez at 5'04 and the group maillot jaune at 5'31. Than GC's number 3 Denis Menchov attacks. Robert Gesink doesn't react, but looks at Nibali, saying "you're the leader, it's your job to react".
And of course, Nibbles listens and junps towards Menchov, followed by our Dutch leader.
img256.imageshack.us/img256/9411/529km.jpg

24km to go
The 3 leaders have become 2. Roche and Spilak have dropped Frank and they cross the summit of the Bonette-Restefond. Frank follows at '54, Sorensen at 1'26.
img256.imageshack.us/img256/3428/624km.jpg

24km to go
At 4'36 follows a group with Froome, Leipheimer and Kiryienka, and they're accompanied by Sánchez, Menchov, Nibali and Gesink. Evans follows closely behind and manages to join them in the descend. The same for Hesjedal.
A 2nd chasing group, with Wiggins, Kern, Schleck, Van den Broeck and Jelle Vanendert in it, follows at 6'03.
img9.imageshack.us/img9/502/724km.jpg

10km to go
Out of range of the cameras, Nicholas Roche looses control of his bike and crashes! This brings Simon Spilak in a great opportunity to win a stage in the Tour de France. With 10 descending kilometres remaining, Frank follows at '48 and Roche & Sörensen at 1'56. The group maillot jaune follows at 5'08. No, not a group, but.....
img716.imageshack.us/img716/4103/810km.jpg

9km to go
Robert Gesink!!! The pace dropped in the groupe maillot jaune, and Gesink sneaked away. When he is 30 metres in front of the others, his opponentes start looking at each other. Nnibali doesn't want to chase him, Menchov thinks it's Nibbles his job and Evans says "Hey, you dropped in the climb, why should I do it??" One guy thinks "F%$#&k you all", and goes in the counterattack: Sammy Sánchez. But meanwhile, Gesink has created a gap of 30 seconds!
img835.imageshack.us/img835/8763/99km.jpg

Finish
Simon Spilak, the number 6 in the Giro earlier this year, takes his first win of the year. Matthias Frank finishes 2nd at 1'00, Roche and Sorensen follow at 2'02, and then the waiting starts.
img710.imageshack.us/img710/4333/10finishu.jpg

Finish
Sánchez, being the best descender in the peloton, has closed the gap to Gesink and the 2 finish 4'39 behind today's winner Spilak.
img855.imageshack.us/img855/2654/11gesink.jpg

Finish
The group maillot jaune finish at 5'10. And this means that Gesink is the new GC-leader by 13 seconds!
A group of Schleck, Wiggins and Vanendert finishes at 6'06. Only 6 riders finish outside the time limit, among them is Juan Antonio Flecha.

Word from the DS
Smile

We're very happy with the maillot jaune in our team. Gesink did well in the descend, using the quarrels between the others to crwate a gap of '31. No he needs to enlarge the gap tomorrow at the Alpe d'Heuz. I think the crowd will push him up that mountain tomorrow, as the Alpe is called the Dutch mountain Wink .

This looks good, doesn't it?

Hell yeah Grin Well done! Now bring it to Paris!

Oh, and how much misfortune can you have? I bet Roche would have won the sprint against Spilak^^

Stage 17 is the queens's stage of this years Tour de France. The riders have to climb 3 hors-category climbs with a total of 5525 height metres. First, the COl du Galibier (20.9km at 5.6%), followed by the Col de la Croix de Fer (31.6km at 4.8%) and the finish at the summit of the Alpe d'Huez (15.1km at 7.2%).

img163.imageshack.us/img163/5853/alpedhuez.jpg

136km to go
Again, early attacks, a chasing peloton, catched breakaways, and finally one that succeeds. Rigoberto Urán (finally he shows himself) is the initiator of the breakaway and he is joined by Lars Ytiing Bak, Gabriele Bosisio, Gerald Ciolek, Stuart O'Grady, Francisco Pérez and Nuno Ribeiro.
O'Grady is the first to cross the summit of the Galibier. The peloton is 4'48 behind.
img600.imageshack.us/img600/1344/1136km.jpg

86km to go
But this time, the peloton doesn't let a breakaway ride away too far, and already at the foot of the Croix de Fer, the 7 get caught.
img441.imageshack.us/img441/5149/286km.jpg

55km to go
No attacks occur in the ascend of the Col de la Croix de Fer. Robert Gesink is the first at the summit, and becomes the new virtual leader of the KOTM-rankings. There are still 35 riders left in this peloton.
img29.imageshack.us/img29/3415/355km.jpg

16km to go
Our domestiques keep the pace up high in the descend and the valley towards le Bourg d'Oisans. The final ascend is waiting for us!
img528.imageshack.us/img528/9343/416km.jpg

10km to go
After 1/3 of the climb, only 9 riders remain in the leading group: Gesink (1), Nibali (2), Evans (4), Sánchez (5), Wiggins (6), Schleck (7), Hesjedal (9), Vanendert (11) and De Weert (20).
Denis Menchov, GC's number 3 is missing. He follows at '52 in a group with Kern (8) and Van den Broeck (10).
img515.imageshack.us/img515/3825/510km.jpg

7km to go
After 3 more ascending kilometres, the 9 are still together, but Christophe Kern is about to close the gap. Menchov follows at 1'15. Most of the work is done by Evans and Gesink.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/2263/77km.jpg

5km to go
Under the bow of the last 5 kilometres, Gesink increases the pace of the leading group, and because of it, Wiggins, De Weert and Vanendert have been dropped.
img528.imageshack.us/img528/8848/85km.jpg

3km to go
The plan is to continue this high pace and attack within the last 2 kilometres. But Cadel Evans messes it up, as he attacks with 3km to go. Gesink can react, but the pace set by Evans is extremely high!
img841.imageshack.us/img841/8906/93km.jpg

Finish
The gap mad by Evans is getting bigger every 100 metres, and the Aussie takes his 3rd stage win. Gesink minimizes the loss, being 11 seconds behind. Nibali, Schleck, Hesjedal and Sánchez follow at '24.
Denis Menchov looses 1'52 and can probably put a cross through his podium ambitions. Strangely, only 4 riders finish outside the time limit, so still 180 left!

Word from the DS
We're happy to stay in yellow, but we hoped to leave the Alps with a bigger gap to Nibali and Schleck. Especially Evans seems to be the man in form, we should try tomorrow to enlarge the gap to him...

Stage 18 from Bourg d'Oisans to Saint-Etienne, is the last change to gain some time in the GC, before the ITT (stage 20). The route is very hill, including two climbs (2nd and 3rd category) in the last 35 kilometres.
img407.imageshack.us/img407/8425/stage18.jpg
img819.imageshack.us/img819/7382/saintetiennecities.jpg

30km to go
A group with Vaitkus, Ballan, Demaret and LS Haedo was in the attack today, but got got early in the ascend of the Croix de Montvieux (13.6km at 4.9%). Jelle Vanedert set a high pace in that ascend, so there haven't been attacks when the peloton reaches the summit.
img823.imageshack.us/img823/652/130km.jpg

11km to go
When the final climb, the Cote de Sorbiers (3.6km at 6.1%) begins, Alexandre Vinokourov attacks. The Kazach has no chance against Vanendert, who has a great daily form (+4) and catches Vino again shortly after.
img850.imageshack.us/img850/2581/211km.jpg

7km to go
Than at the summit the attack of Robert Gesink! The GC-leader wants to get some more time before the ITT. Of course Vincenzo Nibali reacts and can close the gap. Cadel Evans can't follow, ans has to hope that the peloton (what is left of it) that is behind him, closes the gap to the 2 leaders.
img812.imageshack.us/img812/8229/37km.jpg

3km to go
Already in the streets of Saint-Etienne, Nibali and Gesink have got a gap of '36 to a group with Sánchez, Vinokourov, Vanendert, Evans, Hesjedal, Cancellara, Efimkin and Wiggins, and '52 to the peloton.
img194.imageshack.us/img194/4691/43kmh.jpg

1km to go
The gap to the chasers decreases very, very fast. When the 2 enter the last kilometre, it's only 10 seconds. Nibali has started his sprint, and Gesink starts his jump. Evans and Hesjedal are shortly behind, and even Sagan is approaching!
img39.imageshack.us/img39/2002/51km.jpg

Finish
Gesink has more energy left than Nibali and is going to win. But Hesjedal is coming close, closer, close, not enough! Finally, in stage 18 we get our stage win!! Peter Sagan takes the 4th place.
When we look at the results list, we see that Denis Menchov has been sleeping. He was that bad positioned before the final climb, he lost 2'36 today and even drops to 5th in the GC!

Well done, you can do it! And also a nice stage win over there. Keep it going.

Could I ask for a Stats profile for the Monster team that you've sent to the tour?

Stage 19, 158 kilometres between Roanne and Montlucon. One stage before the decisive ITT!

44km to go
As happened more often in this Tour, a breakaway will fight for the stage win. Lucas Sebastián Haedo (Saxo Bank), Bjorn Leukemans (BMC), Matteo Montaguti (Androni), Pierre Quemeneur (Europcar) and Grégory Rast (Radio Shack) have a lead of 8'18 to the peloton with 44 kilometres to go.
img811.imageshack.us/img811/3644/144km.jpg

8km to go
Quemeneur is the first who can't follow the pace, and after that, Bjorn Leukemans decides to attack. The Belgian rider feels he's the strongest and the chance to win the stage are bigger when he goes solo, than in a group sprint.

Finish
It's a great win for the Belgian rider, his first of the season, after many Top 10 places in the cobbled classics.
img404.imageshack.us/img404/8771/3finish.jpg

Peloton
4'51 behind, Marcel Kittel wins the sprint for the 5th place. It was a strange sprint, has we formed a train, and the other teams / sprinters didn't and were a long way behind at 1km.... Oh well, don't bother.
