Discovery: 2014 Paris-Nice

April Schedule

Another busy month, with a series of classics, a UCI Pro Tour stage race and a race on our home turf.

April 1: E3 Prijs Vlaanderen
April 3-6: KBC - Driedaagse Den Panne - Koksijde
April 8: Ronde van Vlaanderen
April 9-14: Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
April 11: Gent-Wevelgem
April 15: Paris-Roubaix
April 16-22: Tour of Georgia
April 22: Amstel Gold
April 25: La Fleche Wallonne
April 27-29: Vuelta Rioja
April 29: Liege-Bastogne-Liege

Our goal for the month is get one win in the cobblestone classics and one win in the hilly classics plus win the Vuelta Rioja, which is always one of our sponsors favorite races for some reason. If we accomplish these things, we'll be very happy. This means Ivan Rovny and Frederik Nolf are the main guys for the month. We'll also begin Giro d'Italia preparations this month so a few guys, including John Lee Augustyn, will be making their season debuts.

Past Winners
2007: Stuart O'Grady (CSC)
2008: Leif Hoste (Predictor Lotto)
2009: Tom Boonen (QuickStep)
2010: Frederik Nolf (Lampre)
2011: Leif Hoste (Predictor Lotto)
2012: Aidis Kruopis (Bouygues)

The start list for this years race is quite strange. While there are a number of good cobblestone specialists here, there are no big names present. No Hoste, no Boonen, no Nuyens, no Trofimov, etc. Nolf is by far the biggest name present. If he was in top form, I suspect he'd have no problem winning this race. He isn't though, having raced only 6 days over the past 2 months.

There are a number of attacks early on. The peloton chases every one of them down and things calm down for a while. As we hit the cobblestone covered hills, we move forward to push the pace. It has the desired effect as we manage to create a break of 7 of our riders plus Hulsmans and Ingels from QuickStep.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0005.jpg

Over subsequent hills, the group breaks apart and pulls back together, ultimately being caught by a chasing group of 15. As soon as the chase group catches up, Niels Albert launches a strong attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0006-1.jpg

Albert gets over a minute lead and manages to hold it despite our furious chase. Over the last 10 km, we finally manage to cut into the lead; but not enough. Albert takes a nice win with the sprint coming in hard behind him.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0007.jpg

We tired ourselves out in the chase and the best we could muster was a 5th place finish by Heinrich Haussler, who was by far the most fit rider on the team today.

This is one of Nolf's favorite races, although he's not won it. As with the E3, the big names are conspicuous in their absence. Not sure why nobody is showing up for these races. Still tough competition, but not as tough as it might have been.

Stage 1: Zottegem - Zottegem
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0001.jpg

Cobblestone stage today. We look to have the strongest overall cobblestone team here so will try and push the pace. The wind is blowing hard so might be able to get splits.

The weather is once again horrible today. Heavy downpour of rain so we need to be careful, especially on the cobblestones.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0002.jpg

12 men in the early break today. The weather conditions lead to a lot of falls. As planned, Discovery Channel pushes the pace and cyclists are falling off left and right (quite literally in some cases). In the final third of the race, Niels Albert is once again the guy to make the first move with an attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0003.jpg

Nolf and Meersman follow and the three come together.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0005.jpg

We don't relay too hard as there is still a bit of racing to be had, and the chasing pack catches up with us. This is okay as we have now have 7 guys in the pack of 22. We once again move forward to push the pace.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0006.jpg

With under 10 km to go, Nolf is feeling strong and launches an attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0007.jpg

Gert Steegmans is the only man to follow and links up with Nolf.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0008.jpg

Steegmans is a strong sprinter and Nolf is not. We try to surprise Steegmans by jumping into the sprint early.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM009.jpg

It has no chance of working, but it was worth a try. Steegmans passes Nolf to grab the stage win.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0010.jpg

Missed the export button but here are the standings at the end of the first stage. Discovery places well with four in the top 10.

Stage 2: Zottegem - Koksijde
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0012.jpg

Wind is blowing hard today so might be a chance for splits in the peloton. We need to be attentive.

Ten man break today is caught with 20km to go. We are pulling the peloton when the wind kicks up and a split occurs. We get a group of 12 consisting of 7 of our guys.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM00135.jpg

12 become 6 when suddnely, Tom Thill launches an attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0014.jpg

We push the pace hard the rest of the way. Not to catch Thill but to gain time on Steegmans who is not on our side of the split. While Thill, goes on to win, we finish strongly only to discover, much to our dismay, that the officials have decided that there were no time gaps back to the main group and that Steegmans finished on the same time as Nolf. Bastards!

Stage 3: De Panne - De Panne
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0016.jpg

Windy again today. Will be on the lookout for splits and see if we can't get Nolf up past Steegmans.

Main break group has 9 today. We take over the peloton to lead the chase. Ultimately the wind starts kicking up again and we get the split we are looking for - just too bad Steegmans is in there with us.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0017.jpg

Unable to gain time on Steegmans, and with little need to gain time on anyone else, we back off and the peloton comes back together such that we have a sprint finish. Van Heerden is trailing Rojas.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0018.jpg

Rojas is gone, but so far Van Heerden is managing to hold off Steegmans adn Jumel for 2nd but it is tight.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0019.jpg

Van Heerden runs out of gas and will slip to 7th. Meanwhile, Rojas takes the stage win. Steegmans comes 2nd and extends his lead over Nolf to 10 seconds thanks to the bonus points.

Stage 4: Koksijde - De Panne ITT
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0021.jpg

12 km ITT to wrap the tour up. Two interesting battles to watch today. The first is the battle for the overall win. Nolf is a better time trialist than Steegmans but needs to be able to make up 10 seconds over a short 12 km. Hard to see anyone else challenging for the win as the next closest guy is 34 seconds back of Nolf. The battle for third, however, is quite tight. Lars Boom is an excellent time trialist and we'd like to think we may have a really good shot at taking two podium spots here.

First strong time is set by Josu Agirre at 12'31.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0022.jpg

Shaun Higgerson, no chance in the overall but excellent at ITT's so going for the stage win. He won't get it though: +12 (5th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0024.jpg

Nothing much happens until Lars Boom hits the course. He looks strong and beats Agirre's time by 5 seconds, 12'26.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0027.jpg

Almost immeditately that is topped by Michiel Van Aelbroeck at 12'20. That should be good enough for the win.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0028.jpg

3rd placed Kenny De Ketele hits the course, +31 (16th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0029.jpg

Frederik Nolf pushes hard to try and get the win: +33 (19th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0030.jpg

We await Gert Steegmans time. He looked strong in the first half of the ITT, trying to keep Nolf in check. He seemed to really fade towards the end though. His time flashes up: +56 (63rd). Wow, not only does Nolf pass him for the win but Van Aelbroeck and Boom pass him for a podium spot as well. Harsh on Steegmans as he ran a good race, but he'll finish 4th overall.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/KBC/PCM0031.jpg

We indeed get our 2 podium spots, although not quite the way we thought we would.

2011: Tom Boonen (QuickStep)
2012: Frederik Nolf (Discovery Channel)

We got a win here last year with Nolf, however it was somewhat tainted by the fact that none of the big names showed up. Not clear exactly why, but they weren't here. We have more or less the same team we've had for all of the cobblestone races:

Leader: Nolf
Lieutenant: Gianni Meersman
Sprinter: Heinrich Haussler
Teammates: Boom, Cantoni, Lamborelle, Leukemans, Nielsen

Once again this year, the bulk of the big names have stayed away. The toughest competition here will come from Matti Breschel and Edvald Boasson Hagen. Nobody else of note is here, however, so the win is ours for the taking.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0001-2.jpg

No time to look around at the sites of Brugges, there is a race to be run today.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0002-1.jpg

Not much happens until we hit the hills, then we move forward to push the pace. After several hills, it as the desired effect. Five of our guys have gotten ahead of the pack. Only Breschel has managed to stay with them.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0003-1.jpg

Lars Boom is doing the work of 10 men, pushing the pace hard. So far the only effect, however, is that he's dropped two of our guys. Breschel is still there.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0004-1.jpg

Up the Mur de Grammont and a chance to ask for divine intervention. Boom still is leading the way and Breschel is still hanging on. Nolf isn't at his best today and is struggling a bit.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0006-2.jpg

Breschel is a decent sprinter so we can't let him have any advantage. Therefore, we launch an attack up the final hill. Nolf clearly doesn't have it and we tell Boom to go ahead and go.

Boom gets his first big win. He deserved it after the work he put in today. Meersman will come in 2nd.

The battle is on for 3rd and Breschel is simply better than Nolf today.

2011: Alejandro Valverde (T-Mobile)
2012: Jaume Rovira (QuickStep)

Valverde dominated this race for several years, but he is not as good as he once was and he isn't here. Last years winner, Rovira, is here and has to be considered one of the favorites. Other explosive hill specialists who will be in the running include: Jonay Pereiro, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Victor Safonov, Remy Di Gregario and our own Ivan Rovny.

Stage 1: Hondarribia - Elgeta
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0001.jpg

Flattish stage today with some hills in the middle. Likely to come down to some sort of mass sprint at the finish.

13 men in the break today. Rabobank controls the tempo in the peloton for Boasson Hagen, wearing white as the current leader in the UCI Pro Tour individual points standings following his top 10 at Ronde van Vlaanderen
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0002.jpg

Break is caught and main contenders are together 1.8 km from the finish. Rovny and Sui are in the thick of it.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0003.jpg

As the sprint gets underway, it is Rovira, Pereiro and Martin out front with Sui and Rovny trying to hold off Safonov.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0004.jpg

Rovira gets the win over Pereiro.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0005.jpg

Martin takes 3rd and Sui noses in ahead of Rovny for 4th.

Stage 2: Zarautz - Getxo
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0007.jpg

Steep hill near the end of todays stage. Not sure if that will lead to breakaways or if what is left of the peloton will stick together for a mass sprint finish.

Our Jesus Mariani falls down for no apparent reason. He's okay, though, and makes his way back to the pack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0010.jpg

Only 3 in todays break. They are easily caught by the time we hit the final climb, where Jonay Pereiro launches an attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0011.jpg

Rovira and Rovny follow.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0012.jpg

Pereiro's attack was strong, but so is Rovny's counter. He gets around Rovira and links up with Pereiro. The two are on their own.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0014.jpg

46 seconds back are Rovira and Safinov.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0015.jpg

Rovira and Safinov make up a lot of time on the downhill. As we near the finish, they trail Rovny and Pereiro by only 10-15 seconds.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0016.jpg

Pereiro and Rovny hold them off, however, and have a tight sprint to the finish. It will be Pereiro by only a slight margin. They gain 14 seconds on Rovira and Safinov.

Thanks, if I keep having this problem with the April classics of nobody tough showing up, then will be too easy to win.

This race promises to be pretty boring. Not a single top cobblestone racer is here outside of our team so we should dominate.

We pressed through the hills and got 7 of our guys away(except for Cantoni). The lead was as high as 40 seconds with less than 10km to go. We thought it was all done with a 1st through 7th place finish. All of the sudden, however, Gert Steegmans came out of nowhere. He closed the gap, then sprinted right past our team like we were standing still. Heinrich Haussler was the only guy who could catch up but Steegman just pipped him at the line for the win.

Stage 3: Amorebieta - Agurain
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0003-1.jpg

Hilly stage with a small hill just near the finish which should make things interesting. Hard rain today but riders are not too cautious all the same. A 7 man break gets away and all throughout the course there are subsequent attempts to launch further breaks. The peloton does a lot of chasing.

As we near the end of the race and the peloton has thinned, we notice that Jonay Pereiro is looking like he is having a hard time today. He nearly was dropped during the next to last climb and is hanging out around the back of the peloton.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0004-1.jpg

This looks like a ripe opportunity for Rovny and he takes it, launching an attack up the final climb.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0005-1.jpg
'
Tony Martin is the first to counter, followed by Boasson Hagen, Orozco and Cunego.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0007-1.jpg

As Rovny moves into the downhill, he is all alone. However, he already has two red bars and can't get his heartbeat under control. Meanwhile, the pack has run down everyone but Boasson Hagen and Cunego.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0008.jpg

Rovny cracks on the flat to the finish line and Boasson Hagen files by him.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0010-1.jpg

Boasson Hagen grabs the win to add to his UCI Pro Tour point total.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0011-1.jpg

Cunego gets past Rovny as well. However, Rovny accomplishes his main mission of picking up time on Pereiro and taking over yellow.

Stage 4: Vitoria - Vitoria
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0013.jpg

Another stage with a chance for the hill specialists to battle it out in the final climb just before the finish.

Jesus Mariani, who suffered another fall yesterday, is struggling with injury and has to abandon. Not a great way to start his season.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0014-1.jpg

They days break is caught easily and the attacks start on the final climb with Safinov.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0015-1.jpg

Rovny counters and is stronger. He'll get past Safinov and is on his own.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0016-1.jpg

The pack hauls in all attackers except for Rovny who is desparately trying to hang on for the stage win.

Stage 5: Durango - Santurtzi
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0001-1.jpg

Another hill near the finish so should be more action today. Weather is pretty poor, however: cool and heavy rain.

7 man break today which will survive until 20km to go. Rovira decided to launch an attack today up the Alto de Aztiria, 34 km from the finish. This seemed unlikely to succeed so Rovny held back.

Sure enough, Rovira was easily caught. Things were calm until the final climb where Mora was the first to attack. While Mora is no threat to Rovny's yellow, Ivan decides to follow anyway and try to gain more time ahead of tomorrows ITT. Sui is feeling very good today and not far off a top 10 finish so decides to join.

Rovny is the strongest and is first over the top.

Sui is 33 seconds back along with Euser, who attacked as well. They are 53 seconds ahead of the peloton. Nobody else was able to get away and, surprsingly enough, Pereiro did not even try to counter. He's been really poor over the past couple of stages.

Rovny wins it easily and gained enough time to guarantee his win tomorrow unless he crashes out.

Sui makes it a Discovery Channel 1-2 and moves into the top 10 overall.

Had to check my game settings after this one to make sure it is still on hard. Not because of how well Rovny is doing; he has developed into pretty much one of the best, if not the best, puncheurs around. The lack of attacking from the favorites over the past 2 stages has surprised me. On check, however, I'm still on hard.
