This is one of our season goals. Sanchez fitness is looking good and with 4 x hilly stages, 1 x flat, and 1 x 20km timetrail we have to be on our toes every step of the way. We might aswell try and snare whatever prizes we can in this race as our sponsors will love it.
We join stage 1 with roughly 100km to the line. Landaluze is on a mountainpoints-raid with 3 accomplices. They're left to their own devices for much of the day and Landaluze manages to score most of the points on his way.
But at 77km a few of the big names decide it's time to go. Rebellin, Bertagnolli, Nocentini, Kirchen and Contador are amongst the attackers.
Bertagnolli joins with the frontgroup and he is starting to rob us of mountainpoints. Landaluze breaks away from the front to secure the 2 peaks coming within the next 15 kilometres.
The escapees come together at 45 to go. The group now contains Rebellin, Bertagnolli, Noncentini, Van de Walle, Landeluze, Tschopp & Zberg. The pack are getting nervous it seems as they up the tempo drastically.
At the foot of the last climb, 17km out, 4 riders still hold a minutes lead on the pack. It's the 3 italians and Van de Walle. Astarloza does what he can to reduce the advantage!
But he wont have to work for long! Dekker, Frank Schleck and Kim Kirchen attack!
Sanchez counters and is the only one strong enough to reach Rebellin just as he comes to the top of the climb. In front, 7,2km to the line!
Sanchez leads on the downhill! 2.6km to go! Rebellin is gone, Schleck and Dekker are coming fast! They attack Sanchez in the final stretch!
And they use their momentum to their advantage as they make it past Sanchez in the last 500m. Schleck 1st, Dekker 2nd and Sanchez 3rd. The trio has a small gap to the rest of the pack. This is a good result as we now have our main competition defined. Landaluze will also have picked up enough points to wear the mountainjersey in the morning.

Stage 2 - Vuelta al Pais Vasco
The profile of todays stage is classified as flat. But there are a good few points for the polkadot out there! Landaluze goes on a riad with Pinotti from Team Columbia.
108km to the line. It'll be a long day!
54km to go and the last KoM sprint is just 15,2km away and the pack is closing in. Landaluze ups the tempo as Pinotti gets a update on the gaps from the neutral car.
Landaluze owes Pinotti a favour after today, they were never gonna make it home but he just kept working.
Landaluze pick up max points today. Gives Pinotti an approving nod and takes it easy as the pack is just 200m behind them now. 30km of sprinting preparation to go.
12,6km to go, Aitor Galdos has trouble finding a suitable wheel to latch onto though. Team captain Sanchez comes by him and offers him his wheel. Nice gesture by the lead Euskaltel rider.
4,4km to go. Schleck is next to us as the make our way to the front.
And at 2500m out Frank Schleck opens the sprint. Sanchez goes full out with Galdos on his wheel!
1500m to go and it's neck and neck! Galdos is still on Sanchez wheel though and could have a little more in the tank!
And he does! Sanchez edges in front of the pack and Galdos Breaks out to go full steam! 800 to the line!
And Galdos takes it! Sanchez celebrates as he crosses the line in 2nd spot. A double for Euskaltel! Nocentini takes 3rd. This wil be enough for Sanchez to grab the leaders jersey.

Galdos did excellent. And unless Landaluze gets tied down protecting the yellow jersey, he should be able to hold onto the polkadot jersey yes. |

Stage 3 - Vuelta al Pais Vasco
Rough terrain today. Landaluze didn't manage to get into the breakaway so he wont be adding KoM points to his account today. 15 riders are on the attack including Bertagnolli and Rogers. At 106km to go the boys have to work to keep them within range. Hopefully we'll get help today as there are some good riders out in front.
69km to go and CSC and Caisse have taken over. The front riders now have a lead of roughly 4 minutes.
20km to go and the breakaway is within range. This is the final climb and something is bound to happen here!
Sure enough, Dekker and Evans make a move. Sanchez counters! Astarloza is spent from working to reel the break back in. Sanchez looks strong!
1.6 to the top and Sanchez has a gap to the other favorites. It's all him and he just has to make sure he doesn't overextend himself! 12.4 to the line.
Sanchez passes the remainder of the breakaway as he goes over the top. He powers himself down the descent! The other favorites are still behind the breakaway!
Evans leads the chase! You can just make out Sanchez coming out of the bend.
Decent gap! Must be around 30 seconds!
Evans coming up on the line, up ahead he can see the yellow jersey with his arms in the air. Sanchez takes a bit of time on them today! He'll need to take much more though as the final stage is a 20km timetrial. And with people like Dekker, Evans and Contador in the pack, we need all the time we can get!

Stage 4 - Vuelta al Pais Vasco
KoM points for Landaluze and trying to take a little time with Sanchez is the order of the day. Sanchez is getting into some real good condition now so unless the rest of the favorites are too, they could be in trouble.
Landaluze and a group of 9 companions set out on the break of the day. Landaluze has to fight for every KoM point there is as Botcharov(CA) and Auge(COF) have suddenly taken an interest in them. 117km to go.
with 37km to go we still hold a decent lead though. I don't want to risk dragging one of these guys to the line for the yellow jersey!
27km to go, Auge steals 1st in the KoM sprint as Landaluze wasn't paying enough attention.
14km to go, the final climb! Rebellin shoots forward and Sanchez counters! (sry, no picture) Sanchez again proves that he is the strongest on the climbs and comes over the top just behind Landaluze, who is now alone in front.
We would've liked to give the win to Landaluze, but we just can't afford it. Sanchez blazes past him to be alone in front with 6.5km to go!
Meanwhile there's a mass-crash in the peleton on the downhill section. Bertagnolli and Nocentini are amongst the casualties.
Frank Shcleck attempts to bridge the gap in the final kilometers but there's just no way. Sanchez will win this!
And he crosses the line alone. Several groups are chasing but there are small gaps all the way down. Sanchez is absolutely dominant on the climbs! Fedrigo takes 2nd and Rebellin 3rd. This means we've put some distance to the timetrialers. Dekker, Eevans and Contador were nowhere to be seen in the finish!

It feels more secure now anyways. Keep in mind tho' that in his last TT, Sanchez lost 40 seconds to Gutierrez, who is roughly in the same league as Dekker and Evans as far as TT's go. And that was just 9km.. granted, Sanchez form is better now. But keep your fingers crossed! |

Stage 5 - Vuelta al Pais Vasco
Yesterdays stage saw Sanchez extend his lead in the GC. Dekker is still too close for comfort so we wont be resting on our laurels just yet. If we can get Landaluze out in front to get KoM points we wont be forced to work so much today.
Landaluze tried and tried. But a lot of good riders made it hard for him. It end up a scattered front, with people like Pinotti and Klöden amongst the attackers. Both good TT'ers, we're not liking the situation at the moment. Landaluze is stuck between the attackers and the pack with 70km to go.
When Landaluze is swallowed by the pack, it's clear that the other teams want me to do the work. However, there's no way that the team i have with me can catch the riders out there as everyone is more or less exhausted except my 2 captains and Txurruka who is protecting Sanchez. So we choose another strategy, Astarloza goes on the attack!
And that sparked some life into the peleton! Rebellin attacks, Schleck attacks! Caisse set a high pace now. The riders out there are simply too much of a threat. And even though Astarloza hasn't had any top finishes he's still within 3'30 of the top spot. Which is the same as most of the attackers.
Astarloza has bridged the gap to most of the attackers. Gerdemann and a few are still out in front. Schleck and Rebellin are being eaten up by the storming peleton.
26.6km to go. Schleck and Rebellin have attacked again. And now, everyone of the favorites move! Astarloza is caught and he is clearly marked now!
Sanchez has to go. A small bump on the road and a downhill and he catches up to the other favorites. 23.8km to go and they're taking turns trying to hurt Sanchez!
14,7km to go and we're 800 meters from the final peak. Dekker makes one last attempt, Sanchez in counterattack!
Dekker runs dry just a few meters before the top, Sanchez however does not! He blasts past Dekker, and it couldn't be any better for us. 12.4km to go, and most of it is downhill, this is Sanchez terrain.
7,1km to go and the other favorites are attacking with everything they've got. They are powerless though to catch up to Sanchez who is absolutely flying down this descent.
2,2km to go and we can see the finish. Sanchez doesn't look back. They could be right behind him, he just focuses on getting there as fast as possible.
And once more, Sanchez crosses the line first in this years Pais Vasco! but where are the others?
My oh my... still 1400m to go for Evans and Kirchen who lead the chase.. what a display by Sanchez.
And it's Evans in 2nd, Kirchen 3rd. But look at that time, on the good side of a minutes difference! This will definately seal it for Sanchez!
