After riding the Amstel Gold Race UPT (22 April)in rainy Holland we're taking more then half of the team to sunny Spain. Until the 14th of May we're going to train there on hilly and even mountainous terrain and we're going to start in 4 Spanish races:
Vuelta Ciclista a la Rioja 2.1 (27-29 April)
Subida al Naranco 1.1 (1 May)
Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May)
Clásica de Alcobendas 2.1 (12-14 May)
This trip will be a chance for our youngster to pick up experience. From the rest of the team we expect some top 10. Every point for the continental rankings will increase our chance to promote to the ProTour next season.
At the beginning of the season we had set 1 specific goal for these 2 and a half weeks; wear the KOM jersey in the Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May). This is still our biggest goal of our stay here in Spain.

Vuelta Ciclista a la Rioja 2.1 (27-29 April)
Profile
This 3 stage race isn't very hilly. Every stage has the potential to end in a mass sprint. However it isn't flat either and especially the 2nd stage (marked as hilly) could provide an other outcome.
Team
Daryl Impey
Rodney Green
Antar Buadis
Salvatore Hadrioui
Abderraman Nurani
Jean Robben
Bab Kuider
Taufik Ben Ali
Goals
With Daryl, Rodney and Antar we have 3 sprinters at the start. However the hilly terrain will be difficult for Rodney and Antar.
Daryl on the other hand has less trouble with hilly terrain and could do well here. Certainly if he can survive the 2nd stage. Daryl on the other hand hasn't raced for a while, so we'll have to see how that turns out.
Therefore we'll just see what happens. Every continental point that we can pick up here is a bonus.
Tactics
The team will work for Daryl.
The two other sprinters will have a free role, except in the 2nd stage.
Race
STAGE 1 (27 April)
Salvatore Hadrioui showed himself by getting in the break. However in the first and least difficult stage of this race the break never got a chance.
There are not many sprinters in this race, but our sprinters don't have the fitness at the moment to win here and end up at place 5, 6 and 19.

101 Salvatore Hadrioui TEAM KONICA MINOLTA + 11'40
STAGE 2 (28 April)
This stage had 2 steep hills in the last 40 km. However with the top of the second 25 km for the finish, we hoped Daryl would be able to finish in the front group.
Txurruka (EUS) was the first to come over the top. With a stretched out peleton not far behind he didn't fancy his chances.
Aitor Hernández (ACA), 3rd over the top, was of a different opinion and threw himself down the descent.
Daryl only just managed to hang on to the peleton and had some work to do to get to the front.
Aitor Hernández road an impressive descent and got an big enough gap that enabled him to hold off the peleton. He wins the stage and grabs the leaders jersey.
Daryl comes in 6th. A good result for him in this difficult stage.

STAGE 3 (29 April)
Bab Kuider gets in a break of four. With a long climb in the middle of the stage this is not an easy stage, but nevertheless it was obvious it was going to be a mass sprint.
The stage proved to be to difficult for Rodney and Antar. Daryl didn't get in a good position for the sprint and only finished 13th. The end result for him is 14th place overall.

98 Bab Kuider TEAM KONICA MINOLTA + 19'47
102 Salvatore Hadrioui TEAM KONICA MINOLTA + 22'33
Conclusion
We can't complain, we knew beforehand this would be a though race for our team here.
And Daryl is here to work on his race fitness for the month of May. If you consider that, 14th in the GC is a good result. We're certain Daryl will come up with some higher finishes in upcoming races.

Subida al Naranco 1.1 (1 May)
Profile
Team
Abdelkader Belmokhtar
Tiaan Kannemeyer
Daryl Impey
Abdelbasset Hannachi
Salvatore Hadrioui
Abderraman Nurani
Bab Kuider
Jean Robben
Goals
Tiaan and Ab will be the riders that are going to try and deliver us that KOM jersey in the Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May). That race will start the day after tomorrow. This race has some strong contenders in it and it will be a good test. Nevertheless we're aiming for a top 10 spot.
Tactics
So Ab and Tiaan will be protected. Bassie and Daryl will try and get in the break.
Race
A lot of riders wanted to get in the break, so it turned out to be a long struggle. 50 km into the race a group of 12 finally was allowed to go. Bassie had been alert and we got what we wanted, a strong rider in the break.
The break was kept on a leash and with 25 km to go the peleton had caught up with the break. Meijas (SDV) had jumped away before they got caught, but behind him a lot of riders attacked to peleton.
The attacks resulted in two groups in front of the peleton. The front group consisted out of Leonardo Piepoli, (SDV), Iñigo Landaluze (EUS), Stefano Garzelli (ASA) and John-Lee Augustyn (BAR). It looked like these 4 would fight it out for the win.
Because with 10 km to go they had built up a lead of 1 and a half minute to the second group consisting out of Ab, Lucas Persson (SPI), David García Dapena (KGZ) and the Portuguese champion Cândido Barbosa (LSE). The had a lead of less then a minute to the peleton.
It was the 34 year old Italian from Acqua & Sapone, who beat his 36 year old country men from Saunier Duval in the sprint. John-Lee Augustyn, the 22 year old South African talent who we hope to sign for next season, took 3rd place.
In the last km to peleton caught up with the chase group. However Barbosa with in his wheel Ab were still the first of the bunch to come over the line.
With Tiaan and Bassie finishing 9th and 13th, we showed the overall strength of our team.
Results
1 Stefano Garzelli ACQUA & SAPONE - CAFFÉ MOKAMBO 4h20'37
2 Leonardo Piepoli SAUNIER DUVAL - PRODIR s.t.
3 John-Lee Augustyn BARLOWORLD s.t.
4 Iñigo Landaluze EUSKALTEL - EUSKADI + 1'32
5 Cândido Barbosa LIBERTY SEGUROS + 2'27
6 Abdelkader Belmokhtar TEAM KONICA MINOLTA + 2'37
7 Roberto Heras EUSKALTEL - EUSKADI s.t.
8 David García Dapena KARPIN GALICIA s.t.
9 Tiaan Kannemeyer TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.
10 Gorka Verdugo EUSKALTEL - EUSKADI + 2'56
13 Abdelbasset Hannachi TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.
95 Salvatore Hadrioui TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.
104 Abderraman Nurani TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.
108 Bab Kuider TEAM KONICA MINOLTA + 9'11
112 Jean Robben TEAM KONICA MINOLTA + 10'39
121 Daryl Impey TEAM KONICA MINOLTA + 13'11
Conclusion
Our riders our not good enough (jet) to keep up with such a strong lead group. That is nothing to be ashamed of. Therefore 6th, 9th and 13th is a great result. With this team we're full of confidence we'll succeed in our goal to wear the KOM jersey in the upcoming Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May). |

I'm really enjoying this story, been great so far, and a good thorough read. One thing though, what you write as "changes" I'm pretty sure you mean to say "chances". Other than that, your English is pretty much spot on!
Keep up the great writing, great riding and great racing!

Thanks for the complement.
I'll watch the changes/chances thing and I'm sure that I've made a lot more errors in my story, because really I suck at grammar. I'm doing my best to get them all out before I post the text. |

Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May)
Profile
This 5 stage race consists out of 3 flat, 1 hilly and 1 mountain stage. This race has a lot of climbs in it, which even makes the 'flat' stages difficult for riders that can't climb.
Team
Abdelkader Belmokhtar
Tiaan Kannemeyer
Abdelbasset Hannachi
Christoff Van Heerden
Daryl Impey
Travis Allen
Jean Robben
Abderraman Nurani
Goals
Our main goal of course is to wear and hopefully take home the KOM jersey.
However we have a strong team here. We expect some close finishes from Daryl and perhaps we can even get Tiaan or Bassie in the top of the GC.
Tactics
Ab is the man going for the KOM jersey. However if he fails Tiaan and Bassie will have to try.
In the flat stage the will protect Daryl
Tiaan and Bassie have a free role and if they don't help out with the KOM jersey perhaps they can finish high in the GC.
Race
STAGE 1 (3 May)
This stage had two hill towards the end, nonetheless it was more them likely that the points would be going to the riders that were in the break. So a chance for Ab maybe to pick up that KOM jersey right away?
We ask and Ab delivers. He gets in the break.
There are two other decent climbers in the break of 6; Alessandro Bertolini (CLM) and Guido Trentin (SDV). They don't make it easy for Ab, but he is a man on a mission and manages to pick up the most points.
The peleton sets a high pace over the two hills to catch the break before the finish. As a result almost half of the peleton gets dropped. Daryl is still in it and he is in 3th place with 1 km to go. Does he have anything left?
No, Barbosa (LSE) and Herrero (KGZ) are to fast today. Daryl can just hold on to 3rd place.
We're happy to see Ab on the podium to pick up his price. Goal succeeded!

Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May)
Race
STAGE 2 (4 May)
With only one KOM sprint in todays stage we want our climbers to take it easy for tomorrows mountain stage.
Liberty Seguros does the dirty work and chases down the 7 men breakaway.
There is a little bump in the last km, which doesn't increase Daryl's chances. However with 600 m to go Daryl (In the red leaders jersey of the U25 rankings) is side by side with Guidi (BAR) fighting for the lead.
This finish is a little bit too tough for Daryl. Guidi wins it with Herrero (KGZ) coming in 2nd. Daryl can just hold of Barbosa (LSE) to again finish 3rd.

Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May)
STAGE 3 (5 May)
This mountain stage has 3 tough climbs, so it's the question if Ab can defend his KOM jersey. We're also curious to see how long Tiaan and Bassie can hold on the the front of the race.
Ab did his best but missed the right break.
When the break of 5 reached the first climb with a lead of 2 minutes it became clear very fast that Antonio García González (KGZ) was the best climber. He dropped the others and picked up maximum points on the first two climbs. That means Ab loses his jersey.
On the second and longest climb Leonardo Piepoli (SDV), Roberto Heras (EUS) and John-Lee Augustyn (BAR) attacked the peleton which was thinning out fast.
In the decent a group of 19 riders (which included Tiaan and Bassie) was formed behind the 3 men chase group.
15 km before the foot of the 10 km long climb to the finish Piepoli, Heras and Augustyn caught up with Antonio García and almost immediately left him behind. The group of 19 was now 45 seconds behind the leading trio.
On the last climb with 7 km to go Piepoli and Heras left Augustyn behind. The 19 men chase group was losing even more ground.
It's Heras who wins the sprint and is now the new leader.
The chase group with Tiaan and Bassie comes in 3 minutes after Heras. Tiaan sprints to a nice 5th place.
We've lost the KOM jersey, but we're not giving up on that jet. And with Tiaan and Bassie still with a chance the finish inside the top 10 of the GC, this isn't such a bad day.

Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May)
STAGE 4 (6 May)
Stage 4 is a flat stage again. Ab tried to pick up some points on the first of two climb, but with other riders trying to force a break he only ended up with 2 points.
Gilberto Sampaio (UNI), who was also in the break in stage 1, picked up 14 points today, which would make him the new leader in the KOM rankings.
It was a windy day, but the team did a good job in protecting Tiaan, Bassie and especially Daryl and kept them at the front of the peleton.
With 12 km to go the break was reeled back in.
With Daryl saying he was feeling strong today, Tiaan and Bassie were prepared to act as lead out. With 4 km to go they pulled Daryl right to the front.
1 km to go and Daryl is a bike length in front of Guidi. Can he keep this up?
Yes, a well desirved victory for Daryl and the great teamwork payed of.
This windy day saw 1 casualty in the top of the GC. Piepoli (SDV) had to let the peleton go and lost 2 and a half minute, which ruins his chances on winning this race.
Ab took a breather at the end of the stage and came in 11 minutes after Daryl. The last stage has 4 KOM sprint, so he has a last chance tomorrow to get back the KOM jersey.

Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2.1 (3-7 May)
STAGE 5 (7 May)
The last stage of this race has a lot of climbs of the menu. Let's see if Ab is able to regain the KOM jersey and if Tiaan and Bassie can improve their place in the GC.
Ab succeeds in the most important challenge; getting in the right breakaway. With none of his competitor for the KOM jersey in the break he now is able to pick up a lot of points.
Ab is the only one of the breakaway that is able to stay in front of a peleton, of about 50 riders, just long enough to even pick up points on the last KOM sprint of the race (32 km for the finish). The only job left now is get to the finish and the jersey is his.
It's the last uphill section 20 km before the finish and Heras (EUS) attacks, Augustyn (BAR) and Tiaan counter.
Tiaan overestimated himself and eventually falls back into the peleton, that is thinned out to only 20 riders, while Augustyn catches up with Heras.
They never build up a big lead, but it's enough for the win. Augustyn is faster then Heras. So after Daryl's win yesterday it's again a South African who wins the stage.
30 seconds behind Augustyn, Tiaan and Bassie finish 6th and 7th. Also thanks to again an off day for Piepoli (SDV), this result moves them up to place 4 and 5 in the GC.

With only one race left (Clásica de Alcobendas 2.1 (12-14 May)) this trip to Spain is already a success for us. |

Clásica de Alcobendas 2.1 (12-14 May)
Profile
This 3 stage race consists out of 1 mountain stage, 1 hilly stage and 1 ITT. The race isn't very long, especially the hilly 2nd stage, which is less then 80 km long. However the uphill mountain finish in the 1st stage and the 11,4 km long ITT will surely result in exciting race.
Team
Chris Froome
Tiaan Kannemeyer
Dan Craven
Christoff Van Heerden
Rafaâ Chtiou
Jean Robben
Bab Kuider
Kacem Frenda
Goals
Our goal here is to end up with a top 10 GC spot.
Tactics
Chris gets the leaders role, but Dan and Tiaan will also get protection from the team. Al three riders are capable of ending high in the GC at the end of the race. We'll just have to see who does best.
Race
STAGE 1 (12 May)
With 20 km to go at the foot of the last and only climb of the stage, a 3 men break is reeled in by the peleton.
The first part of the climb is not very steep. The action begins, when with 10 km to go Serpa (GCE) jumps away.
Close behind him it's a 11 men strong chase group, including all three of our aces (Chris, Dan and Tiaan), that has already made a gap of a minute with the peleton.
Serpa never really gets out of sight of the chase group, but they fail to catch up with him. So it's Serpa who wins the stage and will wear the leaders jersey tomorrow.
Behind him it's Heras (EUS), who wants to pick up bonus seconds and tests the chase group, which has grown to 13 riders. Heras comes in second and his sprint creates a few gaps in the chase group. Tiaan and Chris lose 9 seconds to Heras and Dan even 35 seconds.

Clásica de Alcobendas 2.1 (12-14 May)
STAGE 2 (13 May)
Yesterday was a good day for our team, with 4 riders in the top 20 and Chris, our biggest GC hope, only losing time on 3 riders.
Today doesn't look very difficult. However it is a short stage, that is marked as hilly. Therefore we have to be on our guard.
When we're over the top with about 20 to go to the finish, a breakaway of 5 has less then a minute. It looks like it will come down to a mass sprint.
We don't have sprinter here, so the main job of the team is to keep the Chris, Tiaan and Dan in front of the peleton.
With less then 1 km to go. it looks like Hunter (BAR) is the strongest sprinter today.
Hunter wins the stage. Tiaan is the best of our team, taking 19th place. Besides the bonus seconds earned by Rodrigo García (CLM), who finished 3rd today, nothing changed in the top of the GC.
STAGE 2

Clásica de Alcobendas 2.1 (12-14 May)
STAGE 3 (14 May)
Rafaâ hardly had any race days since Paris - Nice UPT (11- 18 March), but nevertheless road a good TT finishing 6th today.
He did lose 12 seconds to Josu Agirre (ORB), who road the second time of the day
and 16 seconds to Rubén Plaza (GCE), who was today's winner.
Then it was time for the riders in the top of the GC. Our guys weren't very convincing today. Tiaan finished 68th, Dan was 43th and Chris (wearing the blue U25 jersey) ended up 25th.
Luckily Chris and Tiaan's times were good enough to keep them in the top 10 of the GC.
It seemed imposible for Heras (EUS) to win almost a minute on Serpa (GCE). He didn't do bad riding the 11th time.
But Serpa sealed the win with the 3th time of the day.

Conclusion
As their ITT results showed Chris and Dan are not in top shape here. Despite their shape they still managed to finish 6th and 11th GC and 1th and 2th in the U25 rankings. Together with Tiaan's 10th place overall, our youngster, Jean robben, finishing 27th and winning the team classification, in front of teams as Caisse d'Epargne and Saunier Duval, this is a satisfying end of a successful Spain trip. |

After our Spain trip we are going to ride 2 stage races in France:
- Tour de Picardie 2.1 (17-20 May)
- Circuit de Lorraine Professionels 2.1 (23-27 May)
and a one day race in Germany:
- Neuseen Classics 1.1 (28 May)
These races will be leading up to our last big goal before our summer vacation:
- Tour de Belgique 2.1 (30 May-3 June)
We'll be bringing Daryl and Rafaâ to Belgium. Daryl for the stage wins and Rafaâ for the ITT, which will hopefully earn him a spot in the top of the GC.
But first it's time for a French stage race for sprinters: Tour de Picardie 2.1 (17-20 May) |

Tour de Picardie 2.1 (17-20 May)
Profile
All 4 stage of this race are flat. Their are also no KOM points to be earned. Their is a big chance that all stage will end up in a mass sprint.
Team
Daryl Impey
Rodney Green
Travis Allen
Christoff Van Heerden
Benhadj Zahouania
Mario Ganuchi
Kacem Frenda
Salvatore Hadrioui
Goals
Our goal here is to go away with a stage win.
Tactics
Daryl is our man here. The whole team will work for him.
Rodney will also be protected and in the final and his job will be to help get Daryl in a good position for the sprint.
Race
STAGE 1 (17 May)
We're not the only team with a sprinter here, so just as expected it comes down to a mass sprint.
3 km to go.
The left train, which is pulled by Bäckstedt (COF), has taken the lead. He has Cofidis' lead sprinter here, Tyler Farrar (COF), in his wheel. Daryl has taken Farrar's wheel, followed by Steven de Jongh (QSI), Hunter (BAR) and Elminger (A2R).
On the right we see Richeze (PAN) and Pineau (BTL) both being brought to the front by a teammate.
1 km to go and Daryl tries to keep up with Farrar, while Hunter is about to pass him.
Hunter is able to catch Farrar before the line. At least it's a South African who wins, because Daryl has to settle for 3rd. This result is good for 8 bonus seconds, so this is not a bad start.

Tour de Picardie 2.1 (17-20 May)
STAGE 2 (18 May)
Today it would again come down to a mass sprint. However two riders, that were in the break and had taken bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint, managed to hang on to the peleton after they got caught. This moved Vincent Jérôme (BTL) and Arnaud Lesvenan (RLM) up to place 5 and 6 in the GC.
With 3 km to go Daryl (In the blue U25 jersey) had maneuvered himself in between Proni (QSI) and de Jongh (QSI). Behind de Jongh followed Veelers (A2R), de Ketele (JAC), Richeze (PAN), Farrar (COF) and Hunter (BAR).
With 4 riders in between him and yesterday's top 2, this looks like a good chance for Daryl for a stage win.
When Proni saw it was not de Jongh but Daryl who was in his wheel, he gave off the lead to Daryl.
Farrar, who was very impressive today, came flying by and won the stage. Daryl, who got in the lead way to soon, also couldn't prevent being passed by Veelers, who takes 2nd. He does manage to hold of de Jongh and he again finishes 3rd.
