Tour de France Preperation

As I wrote in my previous post, I'm 100% preparing for my first Tour de France. My form is coming along nicely and all I had to do was boost up my racing rhythm. Doing, that, I secured my first victory of the season, so I can go into the Tour with confidence!

In the race Boucles de l'Aulne, I sprinted to the win in a group of three.

Then, only a few days later, I started in Tour de la Mayenne, where I won the opening prologue.

I ended up 2nd in the GC after four days of riding, which was a nice result for me.
So it was time to test my legs against the strongest riders. I started in Tour de Suisse. I would test my legs while also trying to keep out of trouble, not getting injured close to the Tour.

My two targets were the two time trials. Prologue and a longer, slightly hilly time trial. These were my results:

A very strong prep race if I say so myself. All that's left before the big GT is the national championships. I feel this year might be the year. I certainly have the legs to compete for the Time Trial title. The road race is harder to predict, but I'm in top shape and ready to rumble!

Hello!

All that was left before the Tour de France, my debut GT, were the National Championships. Going there in top shape, I expected a lot! Hopefully my first jersey.

National Championships - Time Trial
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it01_zps79mfe4kb.jpg

I felt it as soon as I started. My legs were amazing that day. You can have days that you just don't feel your legs. If you have that during a time trial, you're very lucky.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it02_zps8knhbxu4.jpg

I passed the rider who started before me and crushed the first intermediate time. I was on my way to my first national jersey!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it03_zpsr7s1z6ia.jpg

I even caught sight of Nibali in the final kilometer. Had the race been 100 meters longer, I'd caught him.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it04_zpsjqqcapd1.jpg

But that wasn't necessary at all. I finished first with an amazing time. I think this was the best time trial I've ever ridden. A first National jersey for me, and hopefully not the last!

National Championships - Road Race
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it05_zpscmircmxo.jpg

After the success of the time trial, I went to the road race with plenty of confidence. A profile that might suit me, depending on how the favorites will race. My final race before the Tour, too. Let's go for it!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it06_zps0vfr18jc.jpg

With about 16 km to go, I thought this was my chance. The peloton had been very quiet and the toughest hill was behind us (climbed it for the last time today), so I attacked!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it07_zpstx5s46ev.jpg

It was not easy making a gap with Astana keeping the pace very high. They were working for Nibali, who isn't in top form after finishing 2nd in the Giro but who's always dangerous.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it08_zpspsfo7aeo.jpg

I got 30 seconds... 40 seconds. With 5 km to go, Astana cracked and there was a moment of hesitation in the peloton. I could feel the finish line coming closer!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/it09_zpsjavxkhkz.jpg

And I brought it home! A few days after the time trial, I take the road race, too! A double champion, two jerseys! What a month for me!

I think my form is better than ever. I also feel stronger than ever. I cannot wait for my first Grand Tour. The Tour de France is starting in a few days.

Oh on a side note, Cattelan is in talks with Vincenzo Nibali as a future team leader. Let's hope we can bring him into the team!

Great riding, does the Tour start with a prologue? Yellow may be possible Shock

Croatia14 - Can't think of a better prep for the Tour!
DiCyc - A stage win is the absolute goal. He can do it when he has great legs (like the +5 daily form on the TT)!
AbhishekLFC - Sure is. TT or road race, doesn't matter now. That's a great feeling.

sutty68 - Let's hope the form continues well into the Tour!

Selwink - That's certainly true. Very sad to lose him for the rest of the season. We're keeping him on our team no matter what and we'll see if he can return to racing next season or not.

purepasd - The Tour starts with a slightly hilly stage, followed by 2 flat stage and than a long time trial. We can dream!

Hey!

It's finally here. My first Grand Tour. I'm not sure what to expect. I'm not your average debutant, already having won some very prestigious races and having doubled down in the Italian Championships. Then again, a Grand Tour, and especially the Tour, is a unique experience. Three weeks of suffering.

So what's in it for me? Why don't we just find out, instead of setting any objectives beforehand?

Tour de France - Stage 1
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf101_zpsrd5qk1xk.jpg

Pre-race
A very interesting start. Not too hilly, I should be able to survive if the race doesn't burst open halfway the stage. In a 3-week race, I don't expect it on the first stage. But then again, you never know. The final sprint is uphill. I've reconned most stages in this Tour, or at least the finales. This one is within my capabilities. But I'm up against the best of the world.

The Race
Let the Tour begin! A glorious race!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf102_zpszj9j1okl.jpg

Cattelan can already claim the first attacker in this year's Tour, with Fassoli. He'd get in the break of the day but then lose touch after a mechanical and be swallowed by the peloton.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf103_zpsocbzjsm4.jpg

I tried to stay focused, but it was hard not too enjoy my new jersey too much!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf104_zpsiqd49njv.jpg

And then Sky thought it was time to tear the peloton completely apart. A brutal pace, but I kept sitting in position 20 or so.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf105_zpsoh3u9xac.jpg

When Kwiatkowski and Alaphilippe attacked, there was hesitation. One rider from Movistar tried to bridge the gap. I instinctly went into full-gas mode to limit their gap.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf106_zpsei8fiomx.jpg

The two were very strong today. I was one of the riders relaying to keep them close. My legs felt really good!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf107_zpsndt5zpfh.jpg

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf108_zpscfharu05.jpg

They were caught, but by then we were already ready for the final sprint. Did I still have an acceleration in the tank? I tried my best, that's for sure!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf109_zpsr3w7omqs.jpg

In the end, the strongest - who had escaped - didn't need their attack. Even in the sprint they finished 1 - 2. I'm very proud to say I finished 8th in my first Tour stage. It was the best result possible on a finish like this for me, I think.

Most noticable is the absence of Froome at the front, who lost 2 minutes today! How will that alter his Tour? Another very remarkable fact is that the best time trialists like Dennis and Dumoulin have lost a lot of time, too. That means that I may have a real shot at taking the yellow jersey in a few days. Of course a lot can happen, and I'm not saying I'll do it, but there's that opportunity. Already a gap starting at place 12, and I think I'm one of the better time trialists within the top 12 at the moment.

Could this turn into something beautiful?

Tour de France - Stage 2
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf201_zpsnkfctvc9.jpg

Pre-race
A flat stage. This is all for Fontana. I will try to avoid losing time.

The Race
Once again this race had its brutal moments. With the intermediate sprint coming up the peloton was ripped apart. I was in the right end of it, but it came back together again after about 10 km.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf202_zpslqwiorns.jpg

Fontana was looking good and I stuck with him in the final kilometers. Ready to help where necessary and also looking to not lose any time. I decided to sprint, too, though avoiding risks.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf203_zpscbcoaxic.jpg

Kristoff proved the fastest on a slightly hilly slope, with Fontana finishing fifth and myself just in the top 10, too.

Tour de France - Stage 3
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf205_zpscegkzccb.jpg

Pre-race
The final flat stage before the time trial. I'll try to keep my nose clean and save energy for tomorrow if possible. Don't lose any time!

The Race
What I failed to mention in yesterday's report is that Grancitelli managed to get in the break of the day and take over the KoM jersey. With this flat stage without KoM points to be earned and a time trial to follow, he'll wear the jersey at least three days for Cattelan. Excellent publicity!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf206_zpsldtypzmr.jpg

Two major sprint trains were formed in an uneventful stage.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf207_zpsqiy6ff4k.jpg

I brought Fontana to the front and then it was up to him. He started his sprint formidably.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf208_zpsbai7jy6n.jpg

Only Kittel and major talent Oubina were faster than him today. Our first podium here, what a sprint by Francesco. A win in this Tour might not be unthinkable if he continues like this!

And now possiblty the most crucial stage is coming up. A time trial of about 30 km. With a gap over time trial specialists and the form of my life, I have a chance of taking the yellow jersey. L'Équipe gives the following odds for tomorrow's stage in their online article:

Win the Time Trial
Tony Martin 30%
Tom Dumoulin 30%
Chris Froome 10%
Michal Kwiatkowski 10%
Antonio Andolini 10%
Rohan Dennis 5%
Other 5%

Wear Maillot Jaune
Michal Kwiatkowski 60%
Antonio Andolini 30%
Vincenzo Nibali 5%
Other 5%

So l'Equipe is officially putting me on the map, though Kwiatkowski has the most chance to take yellow and I have to agree. It's my first Tour so anything can happen. Then again, anything can happen!

I will just have to do my darnest best and pray for a small miracle, or just a super day.

Tour de France - Stage 4
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf301_zpsnbylza4t.jpg

Pre-race
What's a fella to do on a course like this? The time trial in Cholet is one of the utmost importance to me. This can make my first Tour de France into a fairy tale for the ages. The yellow jersey is within my reach. I know I'm a good time trial rider, but there is heavy competition. Kwiatkowski is the man to beat.

The Race
Bradley Wiggins was the first to put a noticable time on the table. He could well spend a time in the hot seat on a sunny day.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf302_zpsnwjc6dsi.jpg

But when Tom Dumoulin came flying by, everyone knew his chrono would be the one to beat. He put back Wiggins a minute and 17 seconds.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf303_zpsmyekfrwc.jpg

World Champion Tony Martin did his best to beat Dumoulin's time, but to no avail.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf304_zpshafmsvso.jpg

Fortune didn't smile upon me today as the rain started coming down just about when I was to start my race. Kwiatkowski would have the same conditions, so the fight for yellow was on, but to win the time trial, against that time of Dumoulin... Let me say that if it wasn't impossible already, it sure as hell was impossible now.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf305_zpsm7zli4i6.jpg

The thought of yellow went through my head and I admit it messed with my mind for a bit. My first half was not as could be expected, I made minor mistakes twice and almost fell taking a corner. Kwiatkowski was gaining more time. I was 38 seconds behind him.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/tdf306_zpsfmbuc3c1.jpg

In the second half, I recovered thanks to the DS in the car, who really spurred me on and took the pressure off. I was gaining back time and the was still hope for a miracle.
Those final 5 km were thrilling as hell. In the end, I finished four seconds BEHIND Kwiatkowski, meaning I had come short of 15 seconds for the yellow jersey. My second half had been astounding, but too little, too late.

Still, I'm in the White Jersey of best young rider for now and I'm 2nd in the GC, still an amazing start to my first Grand Tour. This performance gives me hope that one day I might wear that mythical jersey myself.
