Vitré - Vitré 199.3 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/0_zpsd66db1lq.jpg

Some attempts right from the start are all reeled back, but after a while a group of 9 riders start to get some distance making it to more than 3 minutes, the strongest rider in the break seems to be Carlos Verona from Etixx - Quick Step .

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zpssozrqx7q.jpg

The pace is relative hot, making for a stretched out peloton, weaker riders fighting hard just to hang on.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpspkzwavtg.jpg

The result is that the breakaway doesn’t hold, but as soon as it is over Pierre-Roger Latour (Ag2r) and Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier (FDJ) gets away on a new adventure. The duo gets about 2’40 with 52 km to go.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zpsephj0ufb.jpg

They don’t make it, on the last 25 km the pace in front of the peloton is very high, more and more riders lose contact every time the front group passes the steepest climb.
With 13 km to go the front group is down to just 15 riders, with Jan Bakelants and Pierre-Roger Latour hanging 30 sec behind.

3 riders slip away over the top Marco Marcato, Matthias Brändle and Thomas Voeckler, Lars Boom attacks to close the gap.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zpszot7mwia.jpg

Lars Boom can’t catch the trio in front, but form behind Johan Le Bon (FDJ) gets contack with Boom and later attacks to leave the dutchman behind.

The race was won by Marco Marcato over Matthias Brändle and Thomas Voeckler.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpsvm0rjyxp.jpg

Evaluation:

Overall:
This was the first season win by the 32 years old Italian, and his first win since winning Paris–Tours back in October 2012.

The most disappointed riders must be podium favorite Arthur Vichot finishing as 30th losing 5’04

Astana:
Lars Boom was a top favorite to the race, a 5th is a mediocre result acceptable but far from great. Hopefully Lars will have a better day in the upcoming Ronde van Vlaanderen.

3/4-2016 Ronde van Vlaanderen

Brugge – Oudenaarde 258.6 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/profile_zps4g8dr4ju.jpg

After 30 km a total of 11 riders are in front of the peloton, Nordhaug (Sky) alone in front, with 26 sec to a group of 6 and another 43 sec to a group of 4, the peloton with a total of 2’15 to Nordhaug.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zpskmnzcpwd.jpg

With a hard push from the peloton over the next 30 km the original breakaway is over, and a new more manageable group get away, this time just two riders. Movistar’s Adriano Malori and Lotto-Jumbo’s Victor Campenaerts, they get about 6 minutes.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpsmwvadm7o.jpg

Over the first series of cobbled sections there are a lot of crashes, some of them fatal. In the confusion a dangerous group of riders lay distance to the peloton, with about 100 km left Degenkolb, Cancellara, Lampaert, Van Winden, Terpstra and Vanmarcke suddently has more than a minute to the peloton.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zps1quoneuq.jpg

The peloton starts racing like mad, and with 60 km to the finish the breakaway is brought back in, now we have a group of 33 riders leading the race, Astana only got Lars Boom left in this group.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zpsx0mwymqi.jpg

From here the pace is very hard, and the selection begins, over the next 20 km a group of 8 riders manages to lay a lot of distance to the others, most of the favorites are in this group except John Degenkolb sitting in a group with Lars Boom 3’31 after, with only Sagan and Stuyven caught inbetween.

Group Degenkolb

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpssq56layo.jpg

5 riders make is to the finish together, the final sprint is von by Alexander Kristoff in front of Greg Van Avermaet and Jürgen Roelandts, Lars Boom makes it in with John Degenkolb’s group but so worn out that he crosses the line last 2nd last in 19th position.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/6_zpsboqrpy4d.jpg

Evaluation:

Overall:
This was Norwegian Alexander Kristoff’s 2nd Ronde van Vlaanderen win in a row, his first win of the season, and his first win since GP Ouest-France 30 August 2015.

The most disappointed riders must be podium favorite John Degenkolb finishing outside top 10 losing 6'47.
The crashing was very bad today a total of 30 riders never made it to the finish line.

Astana: With another very bad result in a sponsor focus race the situation in Astana’s camp is desperate. Unconfirmed rumors are spreading, from the sacking of various managers to a total collapse of the team, but nothing is confirmed so far and Vinokourov is not talking to the press.

It is not a perfect day for racing, not much wind but cold and cloudy, might start to rain. The morning break is 3 riders getting away without much fighting. Bruno Armirail (l'Armée de Terre), Samuel Magalhaes (Louletano) and Cheng Ji (Giant – Alpecin)

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zpsm5bmgpin.jpg

As expected it starts to rain, Alessandro Vanotti attacks on the first hill’s trying to catch up with the breakaway.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpscnb3medi.jpg

The wet roads takes its toll, but there is no serious injuries today, about mid stage Alessandro Vanotti makes contact with the riders in front, at this point the break has about 4 minutes.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zpstofpiw6g.jpg

The sprinter teams starts working for their captain's, with about 50 km to the line. With the harder pace the distance is melting fast and with about 20 km to the line the break is within sight.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zps0oot15mv.jpg

It comes down to the expected mass sprint finish, won by Juan José Lobato over Filippo Pozzato and Pim Ligthart

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpst7rbwxts.jpg

Evaluation:

Overall:
This was Spanish Juan José Lobato’s first win of the season, and his first win since winning two stages in Vuelta a Andalucía last year.

The most disappointed riders might be top 5 favorite Dylan Groenewegen, finishing outside top 20.

Astana: With no good sprinter Astana had no expectations in this race. The only option was a breakaway win.

4/4-2016 Stage 1/6 Bilbao – Bilbao 164.9 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/0_zpszwdmrrgc.jpg

Three riders form todays early breakaway, Rosskopf (BMC), Geniez (FDJ) and Tjallingii (LottoNL), last year’s Giro d'Italia 9th Alexandre Geniez is a strong climber. May not be likely that the peloton will let him win the stage, but he may well be happy with a head-start in the mountain competition.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zpsxxzbv6os.jpg

The peloton is cautious keeping the distance at about 2’30, with Movistar working hardest. It is raining a little and we got the occasional crashes from time to time, Kenneth Vanbilsen (Cofidis) abandon the race.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpszkig3eus.jpg

Alexandre Geniez win’s the first two KoM sprints, but the peloton catches the breakaway at the begining if the final climb and it is Jean-Christophe Péraud first over the last top in a group of 14 riders. Nibali is the only Astana rider in the group.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zps8cbtmnru.jpg

On the downhill other riders join the first group, 48 riders get to the final sprint together. Jean-Christophe Péraud is still leading the group with Vincenzo Nibali on wheel.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zpsejscn0bc.jpg

Simon Gerrans is the fastest on the final km, he wins the stage in front of Julian Alaphilippe and Bauke Mollema, Nibali crosses the line as 14th, with no time lost, there are no bonus seconds.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpsm4mn0pme.jpg

Evaluation Stage :

This was the 35 years old Australian’s first win of the season, after making it 3rd in the Australian National Road Race. Simon Gerrans last win was Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal 2014 same year where he also won the prestigious 100th edition of Liège–Bastogne–Liège.

The most disappointing result today was race outsider Rafał Majka (Tinkoff) losing 1’24 to the first group. Alexandre Geniez got the KoM lead, but paid a price of losing 4 minutes.

Astana: Ok stage for Astana, Nibali is very much still in this and he has shown fine form today.

4/4-9/4 2016 Vuelta Ciclista al País Vasco

5/4-2016 Stage 2/6 Bilbao – Vitoria Gasteiz 175.8 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/0_zpsjnlyid4g.jpg

The morning breakaway are 3 riders, Blel Kadri (Ag2r), Maarten Tjallingii (LottoNL) and Cédric Pineau (FDJ), after about 20 km Alexey Lutsenko attempts to join the breakaway.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zpsxmdbrfw8.jpg

Blel Kadri (Ag2r) wins the first KoM sprint at Orduña (cat1), Jean-Christophe Péraud (Ag2r) attacks from the peloton and starts to catch up to the front group. Péraud attack, makes the peloton up the pace and Alexey Lutsenko attack is soon over, instead he fall back to get water for the teammates.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpssnt42heh.jpg

Péraud joins the front group before the 2nd climb, Ag2r has now two riders in front, the distance is 2’08. With another 100 km to go the high pace has already cut the peloton down, about 30 riders are forming small groups further back.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zpswr9iemmc.jpg

While Péraud collect KoM points, it has started to rain just a little. Rafał Majka has another day of misfortune, he makes a solo crash and fall back to a group behind the peloton.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zps8bpc9pgl.jpg

Maarten Tjallingii and Cédric Pineau can’t keep up with the Ag2r riders, they both give up and fall back to the peloton, with about 50 km left the duo has over 2’30. Meanwhile Majka is back in the peloton.

But the pace is very hot and with 23 km to the line the last breakaway rider Péraud gets caught. The peloton is now 110 riders of the 159 starting the stage.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpsgeldedri.jpg

There are some attempts on the final hill at Zaldiaran, but it is not hard enough to make a difference, it come to a mass sprint finish, won by Michael Matthews in front of Julian Alaphilippe and Giacomo Nizzolo, 73 riders get the same time.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/6_zpsfoiplkeo.jpg

Evaluation Stage :

This was the 25 years old Australian’s 2nd season win, after winning the 3rd stage in Tour of Oman 19/2. Could be the beginning of a very prosperous year for Matthews

Another very disappointing day for Rafał Majka (Tinkoff) losing time again, he is now 4'19 down in the GC.
