Well if the hard drive isn't broken then you can get access to the files, just have to get it out of there or fix the computer. But it would take time, of course..

Sorry about your loss of laptop SN. I recently experienced computer troubles myself, and as a computer addict, it's very hard. Tommy D gets the win though! Too bad Chacon. |

If your motherboard is messed then your HD is not harmed. That is simply not possible. Unless it's a dismal disconnection in which it can all be damaged, but I have a hard time believing that...
If the computer can actually start but no go into Windows then I would be sceptical, but if the computer simply can't start I would open the laptop, take out the HD and put it in another com to back it up, put it back and send it to the shop...
Luckily I have an external HD myself which has EVERY data I keep on my com aswell, and I would recomend that to everyone, as it happens more often than you think that a HD breaks down. |

I also have an external HD, but actually it was that one which broke down last time - not my built-in HD |

I actually have a friend who'se HD broke down, Luckily he had everything on his External, so he started backing up, causing his external to overheat, and breaking down... He managed to save 10 MP3 files and his desktop icons |

I think there is an external hard drive somewhere, but I only use it to store Music and School-stuff
The motherboard has gone before and I suspect it has gone again. I turn the laptop on and nothing comes up - nothing, just a black screen. it couldnt even load up off the recovery disk.
Whatever happens, the laptop is screwed and I will be getting a new one (oh god, Vista...) which is good because the one I did have was overheating too often, and there was somethign broken with the hinges anyway, and apparantely when that happens, the screen usually cracks.
But hopefully the hard drive is okay. The laptop is currently at a local computer shop, Ill find out later today whether its good news or bad regarding the hard drive.

External's are for backup. Hint hint, try to backup important stuff next time.

Sounds like a motherboard failure yes. But occasionally those are followed by some sort of beeping noise actually indicating serious breakdown.

Oh god, Vista will end up delaying the management game even more than a total HDD meltdown.

The computer repair shop should be able to recover your data for you even if the hard drive is bad. If they cannot, you might want to take it to a shop that specializes in data recovery. There is software you can buy on the internet that can recover your data, but you will need to access your hard drive from another system.

Whatever you do, don't buy Vista. I'm buying a new laptop soon (I just got a job, so I can treat myself, even if it doesn't start 'til September ), and I will not buy one with Vista on it if possible. |

I would continue living in XP land if I were you
I have Vista on my desktop, and its possibly the worst operating system set up ever. Program instability, program incopatibility, hardware compatibility problems, random crashes...I had to install XP again
edit: I should also mention that its RAM eater too, taking up nearly a whole GB to run! Looks nice though.

I heard the exact same thing when XP came out... And now it's the greatest thing since sliced bread
Give it time...

In 4 years time and when everyone has 8GB of RAM, then i will consider it the greatest since sliced bread. Wait no, i wont because i use Linux and PCM can actually run under Ubuntu.
