I had no idea that was the case. Thanks Ian, I'll consider it in the next season and guys like Mourey and Van der Haar won't participate next season. As for Raphael: I loved reporting some of the Bpost Bank Trofee races so he'll definitely return at least for some if not all races. Calcutating the time gaps is a bit of a hassle though Grin

You can just let Raphael race a few of the Bpost Bank Trofee races but not all. That way he doesn't go for the overall trofee and you can just make an overall classification at the end of the season, just inventing some stuff Pfft Just say: this guy won, with this much time difference on that guy... etc etc Wink

@sutty68: They rode over him like he was some poor crash dummy. Sad

@Ian: I'm shocked you expect such laziness from me. (I'll probably do something along those lines. I'll also reduce World Cup points in future season because taking care of 50 riders is just too much^^).

GP Costa degli Etruschi
Daniel Oss and David Millar snatch victory away from Cannondale
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/RR_01_2013/2014-02-2000_34_30-Greenshot_zpsf5083df0.jpg

Daniel Oss wins in Donoratico after a brave attack in the final lap. His push on the hill, alongside David Millar (GRS), was too much for the favourites teams of Peter Sagan (CAN), Steegmans (OPQ) and Rojas (MOV). Especially Cannondale and Omega Pharma were hard at work during the entire race but were also missing the few extra percentages in the final kilometers of the race.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/RR_01_2013/2014-02-2000_27_46-Greenshot_zpsc822d3f4.jpg

I was nominated for the race alongside our captain Peter Sagan. Marco Marcato was his lead-out man, while Guillaume Boivin was a potentially second one. George Bennett and Davide Formolo were here to help me with much of the chasing.

Daniel Oss (BMC) and David Millar (GRS) clearly outplayed us on the final lap of GP Costa degli Etruschi. Throughout the day I was working hard, getting bottles, doing relay work, at times even looking out for Peter. Not much time to enjoy the wonderful scenery, but you can still catch many shots of course in the Impressios section.

It was our fault that eventually Oss and Millar attacked at the last climb and got away. I didn’t have anything left to give but managed to hang on the front of the peloton. I saw how we didn’t have the juice anymore and Marcato came in too late for help. Sagan came close in the final sprint towards Oss and Millar but at that point there was no way of catching Oss ever. My fellow Italian Oss truly deserved this win though as his attack was just incredibly strong, while a 3rd place isn’t too shabby. However, Sagan was the clear-cut favourite and not winning here can only be described as failure…
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/RR_01_2013/2014-02-2000_28_57-Greenshot_zps4d4e14e4.jpg

We may think that this is a result of missing race practice for many, but truthfully, we powered ourselves out too early to keep control over the peloton. This left us without the necessary punch in the final lap. We have thus failed to complete our first sponsor goal and didn’t take our first win of the season. There are surely worse things to happen. But it doesn’t feel good either. While I’m sure we will have success later on, I’d have liked to celebrate a victory by my teammate Sagan in my first official road race.

He'll help Sagan to victory one of these days Smile but Raphael has to steal with his eyes now, watch Sagan and learn a lot.

Shonak
Of course this season will be mostly about learning the ropes and so forth. And Sagan surely is bit of an inspiration to him. There'll be some great Sagan/Raphael-Moments along the way, I can promise you that. Wink

Also, I know I might be going quite fast at times with this story but I'll like to keep it going because too much waiting... well, it kills the fun and momentum of stories. Since the updates are rather short and compact I think it should be easy to catch up any time, or am I wrong with that presumption? Smile

The Preparations: Report
Vuelta a Mallorca, Volta ao Algarve & Trofeo Laiguelia

A quick heads-up of some preparations races that Cannondale took part in. I didn't watch any of them but read up the articles on the websites and Gazzetta.

Vuelta a Mallorca
Maarten Tjallinigi (BEL) took the leader’s jersey after winning the first stage out of a 3-men breakaway 29 seconds ahead of the peloton, leaded by Mark Cavendish (OPQ).
The Manx Missile took stage 2 ahead of Greipel though.
Belkin kept the leader’s jersey on the third day as well, but it wasn’t the same man: Sep Vanmarcke won the hilly route from Deia to Lluc and thereby also claimed the leader’s jersey with quite some margin on second placed Michal Kwiatkowski (OPQ). So far it was truly a duel between dutch team Belkin and Belgian team Omega Pharma. Valverde came in third.
The last stage was again won by Mark Cavendish and thus apparently both teams drew 2-2 in terms of wins.

Cannondale’s riders were Davide Villella as captain, young supertalent Matej Mohoric and Sagan’s brother Juraj. Also featured where George Bennett and Alberto Bettiol. Jean-Marc Marino withdrew on the last stage.

Volta ao Algarve
We sent in our Jack of All Trades into this race: Peter Sagan. Hopes lay not so much on stage wins but more on building up some form for Tirreno-Adriatico, Mailand San Remo and the Flanders races. Alongside him were featured his brother Juraj as well as Fabio Sabatini as his lead-out man. Krizek, Bettiol and Mohoric were the men for breakaways or occasional relay work.

While Mark Cavendish profited from some great lead-out duties by Tom Boonen on stage 1 and took a clear win, Marco Bandiera in turn was the lucky rider in the breakaway on stage 2 as he took the stage win as well as the leader’s jersey. His team Androni couldn’t hold on it for long though.

Peter Sagan showed that his form is slowly coming together and seemingly easy impressed at Stage 3 of Volta ao Algarve. His win put him at quite an advantage to the other guys. Who but Sagan should have provided our first win of the season anyway?
His form didn’t let the team down in the Time Trial either, which was featured as stage 4. Though Bradley Wiggins took the victory, Peter Sagan came in 17 seconds later. His lead was all too comfortable at that point that he could make a wheelie as he crossed the finish line of the Time Trial as last rider, and as the winner.

Trofeo Laiguelia
Ivan Basso returned to racing for this season at Trofeo Laiguelia but couldn’t impress. The winner Jan Bakelants put in quite some time into our Italian Superstar in the last climbs. Too much to compete for the win but this is a typical build-up race for Basso obviously. He came into the finish, ranked 14th, with a group consisting of such riders as Diego Ulissi, Matthias Frank, Bart de Clerq or Austrian Georg Preidler.

Bad crash, hope Visconti´s rips are ok..Smile
Maybe Visconti will have the chance to shine in small classics, who knows.

Wiggins lost lots of time in Algarve, could've won there because of that TT

@baia: It's the typical race schedule for a young rider. Aim for small races, helper duties in big classics. Unfortunately, with Gatto, Marcato and on top of all Sagan, there are plenty of riders ahead of him in the ranking order. Smile Ribs are molto bene though. Smile

@YvesStevens: Wiggins only gained 17 seconds on Sagan. You have to bring a bit more to the table for winning a stage race than a decent TT performance. Well, except if you're Tony Martin I guess. Wink

I'll post Omloop later on. Spring classics ftw!

I'm currently playing a bit Giro d'Italia here and there. Startlist is out of this world: Froome, Contador, Wiggins, Nibali, Uran, Purito, Betancur... and Basso the Assassin Wink Who's left for TdF? Shock

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
Spartacus sets the mood
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/RR_01_2013/2014-02-2201_15_21-Greenshot_zps8b50ba7a.jpg

Fabian Cancellara wins the opening classic of the Belgian spring season ahead of Tom Boonen. Both of them showed an impeccable early form and dueled each other throughout the race. Eventually Spartacus had much more left in the final sprint and – maybe a bit surprisingly – outsprinted Tom Boonen. Peter Sagan finished way beyond.

Omloop Het Niuewsblad is the opening classic for the Belgian spring season. This also means the start signal for some of the most exciting races I will attend this year. For today’s stage I’ll protect Peter Sagan from wind, crashes and other misfortunate incidents. With us are also Kristja Koren, Oscar Gatto, Marco Marcato and Fabio Sabatini. A fantastic squad, however many of us either lacking form or are bit exhausted. Our tactic was to try to keep the race together so that Peter may have easy game in the final meters. It has failed.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/RR_01_2013/2014-02-2201_02_35-Greenshot_zpsa2514bdc.jpg

In the early part of the race I had some time to talk to Peter. He’s a truly fun guy and we shared a few laughs. He also gave me some tips on how to move up the team hierarchy. You know, right now, I’m protecting him, getting bottles… all that stuff. Obviously I want to have more in the future. But for now, looking out for our captain, it’s alright.

I can tell you though: It’s something entirely different from riding on your own in a good old race of Cyclo Cross.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Visconti/RR_01_2013/2014-02-2201_12_06-Greenshot_zps60412ee2.jpg
Pure hectic in the finale!

There was a rather large breakaway up front. About 11 riders, amongst them riders such as Devolder, Bak, Schär or Veelers. That’s why we couldn’t take it easy all the time. When we hit the cobbles I was on familiar terrain and I felt like I was doing well. The pace was quite high but doable throughout. Peter and I kept ourselves always upfront. Unfortunately many of our teammates weren’t as aware as they missed crucial splits. Only Marco Marcato managed to get back eventually. No sign of Gatto though.

When Boonen and Spartacus attacked, that’s when things really took shape. Of course Peter wanted to follow them. That was for me the command to pace a bit but only for some seconds. Peter may have thought that they were getting away too far. He put me besides and thus I felt like I could call it day. Rest a bit for the remaining stage. Sagan attacked and with him some other riders. I was just sitting back and enjoying the show.

However, despite his victory at Volta ao Algarve, Sagan wasn’t in his best shape yet. He finished a bit behind as he couldn’t hold onto the intense racing upfront and then he even lost ground in the sprint. At least Marcato helped him along the way as I wasn't worth much once the finale was picking up its pace. Thus I finished way behind. My legs hurting from the cobbles. I am missing some endurance yet but I feel how it gets better. These races really improve you in that regard.
