Another mountain top finish awaits this one up the legendary climb of 12.6 kilometres @ 7.6%.

The rain lashing down would cause Basso and Hinault to crash early on. Carpano close down the early breaks. But Prazdnovsky; Poos; F Rodriguez; J Parra; J VandeWalle; C Grajales; A Kuschynskiy; M Hayman; J Dean and Bert Grabsch did manage to make the break of the day.

As the break saunter on..... THEY JUST DON'T LEARN THEIR LESSON. Apparently not recognising Sanchez's dominance with the break @ 5'40 with 65 kilometres to go Liberia and Standard Chartered come to the front.

With about 20 kilometres to go: Serpa; VandeVelde and Fedrigo attack but it is quickly brought back.

Everyone is back together as we hit the final climb. Zubeldia is looking stronger and stronger in this Vuelta, he is the first to attack out of the GC group. But is quickly brought back before Evans has a go.

Sanchez counters Evans and flies up the road leaving everyone in his dust, another stage win beckoning.....

Sanchez would take the win in a convincing manner, talk about deja vu with stage 14. Zubeldia was the best of the rest distancing everyone with his last effort and now narrows the gap between himself and Voeckler to 90 seconds with Horner looking dangerous in fourth.

Kloden is dropped by a group with Pellizotti yet leapfrogs David Blanco in the standings and just as he found his form Basso looks to be suffering from his crash and finishes down.

STAGE 16: Gijon - Valgrande Pajares 185 KM

With the last climb averaging 6% over 24 kilometres and being steepest at the top this is arguably the hardest stage of the Vuelta.

Henderson bring up the rear of a trio of France sport riders trying to get into the break.

The break today: Hammond; Cooke; Parra; F Rodriguez; Poos; Hunter; Muraglia; Vogondy; A Jacques Maynes; Grabsch; G Rodriguez; J Van de Walle; Grajales and Serri.

With 90 kilometres to go and the break well in control @ 6:20: Vandevelde; Mancebo; Ribero and Nocentini attack out of the peloton.

Once again despite being do danger up ahead the GC men's teams in the peloton bring down the gap as with 40 kilometres to go Camano: Serpa and Fedrigo fail to make any inroads on the peloton with their attacks.

The final climb is reached. It is all topsy turvy. VandeVelde attacks and looks to building a descent gap but then Mancebo claws his way back up to the wheel before the American attacks again.

Vandevelde has 4:00 on the GC group with 15 kilometres to go. Verdugo attacks from the GC group and all of the big favourites counter. Zubeldia and Evans have a go before Sami Sanchez distances them and quickly gains ground on the men upfront who are loosing time very quickly.

The break are caught by Sami Sanchez, Evans is not that far behind today. The last few kilometres are the hardest. Zubeldia's dreams of 2nd look over as does Voeckler's as he can only watch and wonder as Zuebldia and Horner go up the road.

Win no.7 for Aer Lingus and the unstoppable Sami Sanchez. Evans puts in a great show. Voecker now holds just '20 over Horner for 3rd place whilst Voight hands onto a top 10 place with Blanco getting distanced.

STAGE 17: Santander - Fuente de 178 KM

The last of 4 consecutive mountain stages with mountain top finishes. The final climb being 16 kilometres long at 4%.

The early racing was tough with Garin prominent.

A 7 man break has 2:00 with 100 kilometres to go when Vandevelde, despite riding with a broken hand, attacks..

With 90 kilometres to go Lastras and Serpa attack... 10 kilometres later Tiralongo, Nocentini and Mosquera then Mancebo attack but it is too late to join the men up front.

Escobar of Iberia is the first to be dropped by the break. Standard Chartered and Liberia up the pace again but their domestiques are tired and can't make inroads into the quality three man break.

With 16 kilometres to go Vandevelde, Serpa and Lastras have 5:00 over the peloton... Vandevelde attacks!

He is caught before attacking again with only a few kilometres to go. The break would contest the finish!

Behind Pellizotti is putting in multiple attacks and has been countered by Voight and Kloden before the big favourites all attack.

Out front the flame rouge is reached as Lastras is dropped....

After resisting the attacks of the American Serpa goes on the attack. With a broken hand the American just can't respond effectively enough.....
