Gesink showing once again that he cant climb with the best, wasting the effort of his teammates.
Maybe this is he's current form. He will be much stronger after few months.
Like Taaramäe..he was like lost child at Paris-Nice..I still believe that he will be back...and strong like also Gesink.
I am not too sure that Gesink could fulfill this high expectations that some people do have in him.
I like him, but i have to agree. Same with Tarramae, it looks like the guy is catching famous Kreuziger syndrome.
No, because unlike Kreuziger Gesink still shows glimpses of class every year. (for example AtoC last year, Suisse was pretty good too except 1st stage).
He only had 2 good training rides since PN so his form was a big question mark. I think he's ok, not good, but ok, missing that bit of shape you need to go with the others when they really attack.
Still doing better than the Giro winner of last year today

Surprised Wiggins hanged on to the duo at the end, looking good for Wiggo for Giro. Quintana very impressive.
George Bennet on 20th is a very nice result for him as well.
Niemiec continuing the great form from Tirreno, great.

Gesink lost 32 seconds, together with Van den Broeck, Moreno and Lopez. Bennett, Aru and Durasek also in that group. Impressive from all of those, imo.
Hesjedal was 50th, at 2'11. Worth remembering is that this is his first race of the season. Menchov at 2'26 seems to have lost all of his Paris-Nice form on the other hand.

Break an arm once and then get sick just before PN and your Gesink? Don't be too harsh with Taaramäe. Lets see if he can be good at the Tour.

It's not that he's Gesink. He's been way worse for all of his career.

Now he's never going to have the acceleration of Purito but it looks like Wiggins may have found some motivation through a different approach outside of just the different race programme (or he might just be using Catalunya for a bit of fun considering the lack of a TT) but this does indeed bode well for the Giro for him. |

Then again, today's power outputs have been very low, around 380 W (for a 70+8 kg model). It takes 420 or so in such climbs to win GT these days.
Maybe we'll see more significant performances in the coming days, but I wouldn't consider today's as meaningful. Quite the opposite actually. |

Indeed that's why I said it bodes well. I'm prepared to commit a little more, one way or the other, around day 19 of the Giro

Further to that some stats for the last climb from a usually reliable Twitter source vetooo@ammattipyoraily:
Volta a Catalunya, Vallter 2000 (12.05km, 7.49%, 903m). Bradley Wiggins: 34 min 26 sec, 21.00 Kph, VAM 1573 m/h, 5.72 W/kg.
While that's not super high it's not that far off, especially given it's still March. It was quite a long climb at around 35 minutes. Taking a quote from the Sciene of Sport website published during last years (2012) Tour:
"In the last four years, none of the Tour's decisive HC climbs have been done at greater than 6 W/kg." |

The low wattage is probably just what happens when Sky don't control things. I think it was Kruijswijk on the front for most of the climb and he wasn't going very fast. He was barely making inroads on Edet and it took an attack from someone from Caja Rural for them to actually catch him more than halfway up the climb. It didn't look very steep either.

I think Wiggins is riding more relaxed. He used to ride like this, The lack of real action helped for sure, but I think because he has that tour now the pressure is off a little. Froome is taking a much bigger role, picking up major points. So Wiggins feels freer to ride how he wants rather then just sticking to the game plan all the time.
His pretty tactically astute, so he knows that teams will eventually work out how to overcome to Sky train, as its not perfect. So his keeping his option open.
I hope so anyway, otherwise Nibbles will walk with Giro pretty easy the way his looking.
I think tomorrow will explode though. Everyone i feel was saving for tomo. |

Several interesting performances
