Ronde Van Vlaanderen Race Preview

And we finally get into the "Flanders' finest". Ronde Van Vlaanderen is the second monument of the year and the best race in Belgium. The cobbles and hills and sometimes both harden this race and for many just finishing it will be a victory. A good placement will be decisive all day long.

CSC has brought the team that went to Gent-Wevelgem but with some changes. Karsten Kroon who one in Milan San Remo has came, as well as Jakob Piil who will be a good helper to the team leaders: Stuart O'Grady and Fabian Cancellara. Ljunqvist who was in Catalunya also joined the team.

CSC team

- S. O'Grady
- F. Cancellara
- K. Kroon
- M. Ljunqvist
- L. Michaelsen
- K. A. Arvesen
- M. Baludzum
- J. Piil

The main contenders

- Tom Boonen - with 8 victories already this year, after winning last years Ronde, and a few days ago Gent-Wevelgem he is the guy to beat. With a very strong Quick Step team behind him, he'll have Nuyens, Bettini and Pozzato as lieutenants.

- Peter Van Petegem - he really can win here as he did in 1999 and 2003. 3rd last year and 2nd in Gent-Wevelgem and also with strong team mates like Mattan, Steegmans and De Vocht.

- Leif Hoste - Discovery Channel has two riders who can fight for a top place, with Hoste and George Hincapie. But that's not all. With Hammond, Ekimov, Gusev, Van Heeswijk and Devolver they have a really strong team who can do a lot of damage to the other teams.

- Juan Antonio Flecha - another guy that has anything to win here. A good suport from Rabobank and the qualities of a good cobbler, who can pass the hills and have loads of stamina. He's an attacker and that's how he can go for the win since he's slower than Boonen and other favorites.

- Andreas Klier - Telekom man was 2nd last year and despite he hasn't show up this year, his team has talent and will be fully supporting him.

- Alessandro Ballan - he is also a guy who can win here, and he also has a very good team mate for this race in Enrico Franzoi. He was 6th last year and can improve that place.

- Magnus Backsted - The swedish sprinter can be on the fight if he holds the pace. Liquigas will try to protect him as far as they can but then it's up to him.

- Thor Hushovd - a strong sprinter who can hold on well on both hills and cobbles. He'll have the support of Kirsipuu and a few more team mates, but he is expected to be alone at the end of the race.

The route

Ronde is know for it's hills and cobbles and this year we should expect exactly the same. 17 hills, a lot of them cobbled, like Paterberg and Koppenberg.

When I played it (as CSC), this was the top 3:

1. Boonen
2. Cancellara
3. O'Grady

I hope you can do better! Grin

With 65 km to go the favorites group is reduced to 26 riders and Rabobank is setting the pace. At the front a three men group is looking dangerous with Zabel, Wrolich and Steegmans with an advantage of 4'40. Surprisingly Boonen is alone as all of Quick Step team has been left behind.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Ronde%20Van%20Vlaanderen/PCM00037_zps184881ad.jpg

42 km to go and Boonen is setting a hard pace on an 11 men group. Rabobank and CSC still have 3 riders each. The men up front have less than a minute now and behind Van Petegem and Klier are out of the race discussion.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Ronde%20Van%20Vlaanderen/PCM00046_zpscf7f4427.jpg

Boonen's pace have caught the escapees and is leaving everybody in difficulty.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Ronde%20Van%20Vlaanderen/PCM00057_zps02c894b4.jpg

Hoste attacks and Cancellara responds, followed by Flecha. But they will so be caught.

Spoiler
While i focused on Cancellara, Boonen upped the pace and O'Grady was let behind. When i saw it, i had to put his effort on the top in order for him to come back Sad

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Ronde%20Van%20Vlaanderen/PCM00068_zps442d2b23.jpg

After those attempts it was Boonen who went away and immediately created a gap of 30'' to Hoste, Flecha and Ballan who tried to follow him. Cancellara and O'Grady are with Hincapie and Steegmans 24'' behind the pursuers.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Ronde%20Van%20Vlaanderen/PCM00078_zpsaf1dd125.jpg

With Boonen flying to the win and already miles away, Hoste tries to get the 2nd place. Cancellara is giving everything to close the gap but he is almost dead.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Ronde%20Van%20Vlaanderen/PCM00089_zpsa6d326e2.jpg

Boonen celebrates a great win! He had no team mate for 65 km and still he was by far the best!

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Ronde%20Van%20Vlaanderen/PCM00099_zps09a47d91.jpg

Ballan is 2nd, Hoste 3rd and Flecha takes the 4th place.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Ronde%20Van%20Vlaanderen/PCM00107_zps614d8206.jpg

Hincapie used the work of CSC men and then sprinted for 5th. O'Grady is 6th and Cancellara 7th.

Boonen was unstoppable today and to CSC being the best team isn't really a good consolation, since the sponsors where expecting a win here. On Paris Roubaix, the team will have to do better!

@ fcancellara - I think it is almost impossible to beat Boonen on this first season. Well, you did better than me. Were you playing a whole career or just a single race?

@ Ian Butler - Cursing, shouldn't help getting accross Koppenberg ;P

@ sutty68 - Thank you for the support! I hope i can do much better on Paris Roubaix.

I think he'll be of much more use on Roubaix, as well as Michaelsen. They both can't handle the hills in RVV.

Hoste 3rd, that can't be right. Are you sure he wasn't 2nd? Pfft

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco

In order to prepare to the Ardennes, CSC took a great team to Pais Vasco with Sastre being the man in best shape and so the team leader.

Basso, Julich, both Schlecks, Vandevelde, Zabriskie and Lutteberger formed the rest of the team in Spain.

The results weren't really the main objective but Sastre had a decent 4th place on a tour won by Vinokourov. The other guys develop their fitness during these 6 days.

Paris Roubaix

And the Hell of North is here! With the same candidates that went to Ronde, CSC will look forward to a better result. Super Boonen will be very hard to beat, and there are many other guys with the same odds than Cancellara or O'Grady.

The profile is well know: cobbles, cobbles, cobbles!

Race Report

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00028_zps46ffaa63.jpg

With 62 km to go and 100 men on the peloton, Ballan's team mate Enrico Franzoi launches an attack. He is a dangerous man!

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00038_zpse870b210.jpg

With the main group reduced to 37, Hoste has a flat tire! That will make it hard for him to come back.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00047_zpsb63e6702.jpg

And Flecha launches his attack with Franzoi on sight. Boonen highs the pace to close the gap but he actually creates a gap himself.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00058_zps3c95e7c6.jpg

And the three men form a group with 25'' on the main group with 18 riders. Hoste has all his team working for him but hey still are 2 minutes from the chasers.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00069_zpsc6fce850.jpg

CSC is organizing the chase with Michaelsen working hard. Boonen and Flecha have dropped Franzoi and they have about a minute to CSC group where are also Van Petegem, Eeckouth, Backstedt and Klier.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00079_zps01a5f509.jpg

And Hoste managed to get to CSC group, and now it is himself who is chasing. O'Grady will have to work soon as Michaelsen is very tired. The leaders have 1'21 on them.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM000810_zpsee252539.jpg

Hoste's amazing pace has taken him to Boonen and Flecha and only Cancellara managed to follow him.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM000910_zps241029e4.jpg

Feeling their presence, Flecha attacks and Boonen responds! Cancellara tries to stick on them...

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00108_zpsf8017fc7.jpg

...amazing effort from Cancellara who joins the duo.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00116_zps4815c539.jpg

And the four candidates have just came across the last cobble section together. Hoste joined them and now it's a four men run.

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00124_zpsd1dc6c96.jpg

Entering the Velodrome...

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00133_zps223ba09c.jpg

...Hoste is the first to sprint...

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00143_zps3eb08a16.jpg

... and Boonen gets the win! Cancellara was 2nd and Flecha 3rd!

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/CSC%202006/Paris%20Roubaix/PCM00153_zpsf2ce415d.jpg

O'Grady wins the sprint for 6th place.

A second place with Tommeke in super shape is not a bad result. Cancellara is better every year and this time he almost got it. The team will now face the Ardennes where the expectations are high as well, but with other guys.

An exciting race, and of course, a great performance!
