Racereport:

Today is Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne! We were definitely looking forward to it after the 2nd place in the Omloop. Seeing the profile the tactic was quite easy for us: a sprint. Just stay in the peloton and wait for the sprint. And maybe get a top 5. But after the Omloop where we sent Bos in the BOTD, we now sent Trentin in the BOTD. These are both great talents and will develop well when they are in the attack.

He gets joined by:

K. Thome
M. Carrara
C. Lhotellerie

Their max lead is 6 minutes, but the peloton doesn’t take chances today. With 50kms to go a big group gets dropped and a group of just 35 riders continues. Only Roulston and his helper, Penning, are in there. But most importantly, our whole team is in the front group except for the two. Even better is the fact that Boonen, Ballan, Chavanel, Greipel and Hushovd are in the second group!
Unfortunately they rejoin with 28kms to go… But it cost them a lot of power as everyone rode hard to get back.

Into the sprint with 8kms to go Stannard tries to break away and gets joined by Lars Boom.

They both aren’t good sprinters and know they have to try it. But the peloton won’t let them slip away unfortunately. Vanmarcke and Vaitkus are our sprinters today. Vanmarcke is positioned very well, in the wheel of Steegmans. Vaitkus is further away. Sep is playing poker as Steegmans starts with 2,5kms to go. With 1,4kms to go Vanmarcke is still following, but then he makes his jump! He flies past all the others and only Boonen is following his pace, but Boonen was placed to far back when the sprint started and he has lost a lot of energy trying to get back, so Vanmarcke takes a brilliant win here! Cancellara takes the 3rd place! Vanmarcke finishes with a margin of two bikes! Domination!

“once again Sep proved he’s one of the best when it comes to cobbling races. He always knows when to move and how to place himself. We are ofcourse very happy! I also like to note that I'm very happy that all of our riders finished in the first group. Only Penning lost 2 minutes, but he did a lot of work getting water bottles!”

Yea, I was surprised aswell! I thought Roelandts or Bennati would sprint together with Boonen and Greipel for the victory. But Bennati had a flat tire during the race and I think he lost some energy because of it. The others were not watching out and ended up in the second group^^.

Thanks Sutty and Ian aswell. Vanmarcke is probably my favorite rider in the game! In an other career I even won the WC with him (simulation though, but still..)Pfft

In this race we are going for another win! After Vanmarcke’s brilliant win in Kuurne we are confident that we can win here again! We didn’t bring Vanmarcke here as we only need him in the bigger cobble races, this time our leader is Vaitkus, he’s a good hilly rider, cobbler and sprinter. We will try to get Bos, Trentin or Penning in the BOTD. The lucky one is Bos! He gets accompanied by:

When we reach the last 4 circuits the lead is not much anymore, about 3 minutes.
Here you can see the breakaway struggling at the extremely steep cobbled hill that has to be climbed 4 times! In the background you can also see the peloton struggling!

When we reach the last passage of the hill the breakaway has been caught and Vaitkus is still positioned very well.
He has lost some energy though. We were hoping nobody would attack but Tjallingi puts in a very strong attack!

Vaitkus tries to follow but can’t follow immediately. He’s right behind him though! Hayman and Devolder are behind the two. It’s just 5 kilometers left to the finish, so Tjallingi will make it with 30 seconds lead on Vaitkus, in the cobbled descent the seconds rapidly increased.

Vaitkus will take the 2nd place for us today! Unfortunately we couldn’t win, but hey… Vaitkus tried his best and it was just too tough for him up on the hill.

He’s 41 seconds behind. 1.29 minutes behind is Hayman! He rode very well today and takes a well deserved 3rd place. Devolder does well also, taking the 4th place. 5th place goes to our teammate Burghardt! He did a very good job and makes it a good day for VVV-Venlo Pro Cycling! With Hayden Roulston taking the 8th place we have three riders in the top 10 today!

Comment from Honda:
“we are happy with the three riders in the top 10, but we feel like we should’ve won here… Nevertheless good results in the three cobbled classics this month! Two 2nd places and one win!”

Thanks guys! I know, normally I'm not really good at cobbling, but it works out this time! And two times vs the great cobblers, so this gives the team a confidence boost!

As the Strade Bianche is turning in to a great classic we –ofcourse- want to participate in it! This will be a nice test just before Paris-Nice. We are hoping we can grab a win with one of our sprinters, Nizzolo and Vaitkus, or Capecchi. The finish is slightly uphill so it looks like Vaitkus is the best man for the sprint today. Just look at the beautiful landscape here in Italy!

We decide to send our promising GC-rider Marc Goos in the BOTD. There are a lot of hills today and he can get some good experience! He’s accompanied by:

The 4 on the road do a good job, they get caught just 20kms till the finish! A great job by Marc Goos today, working hard and earning a lot of good experience!

Meanwhile in the peloton we don’t have to do any work and Capecchi, Vaitkus and Nizzolo are well rested. A lot of attacks are coming from a lot of riders now! Just 15kms till the finish. But Capecchi decides to wait till the last hill, and then he places his attack! He just blasts everyone away with an extremely strong attack!

He immediately creates a nice gap, but will it be enough? A group of 3 AG2R and 3 Movistar riders is catching up to him. Still into the descent he has about 25 seconds lead on the others. Going up into the uphill sprint it is Visconti who’s trying to catch up with him! Who will win? Will it be Visconti or will it be Capecchi? The two Italians are almost side by side now!

But with a lost strong burst of power Capecchi wins it! Succes in the Italian classic for Capecchi! Visconti finishes in the same time and the others are about 25 seconds back! Rinaldo Nocentini takes the 3th place! In the sprint of the peloton Vaitkus manages to take a 14th place for us aswell!
Nizzolo finishes in a group after that one, 31th place. Trentin finishes in Vaitkus’ group, taking the 25th place. A good result for the young Italian!
