VO2 max can be translated into how much you can ride in a 3 to 6 minutes effort. But that doesn't say how much you can ride on a 20 or 40 minutes effort, nor what you can do on 3 to 6 minutes after a 200 km ride, or on a daily base.
We just had a lecture about this, and we learned the opposite. ( It has to be said that we learned about XC Skiing, and dunno if it's a difference with cycling)
But in XC Skiing the VO2 Max does not have to be high in the sprint distance. Some of the best sprinters have a VO2 Max of about 70 ml/kg/min, and it's the anaerobic capacity which is very important. In distances about 20-40 min, like a time trial, it has been proved that the VO2 Max is the most important factor.
As it's been said about Svendsen, he has to exploit his high oxygen intake and produce high number of Watts in race, which is also said to be really good.
I've always read that VO2 max was to do with how well you convert oxygen. And that this meant better endurance than sprint, as most sprinting is done anaerobically.

It depends what you means with "sprint distance", Baugé or Kenny wouldn't really have better (or worst) results if their VO2 was 55 or 75.
I'm not sure what you call anaerobic capacity, but I assume it's how much you cope with lactic acid. When using 100 % of your VO2 (aka VO2 max), you also produce tons of lactic acid in a very short time. VO2 is relevant whenever the effort lasts more than a dozen of seconds.
40 minutes efforts are not done at VO2 max, but at threshold. Of course, in general, the highest the VO2 max, the highest the power or VO2 at threshold. It depends from people, but the power at threshold is usually around 90 % (+/- 5 % for most) of your power when at your VO2. And you can virtually sustain that power for a long time. |

With sprint, I mean about 3-6 minutes, and I'm actually reading an article right now about anaerobic capacity, and how they're testing it.
I can't really explain it in a really good way, but it's an estimate of what your oxygen intake is when doing max in a sprint distance, in this article it's a 600m sprint on skis. The estimated oxygen intake is about 90ml/kg/min, even though the VO2 max tests for the athlete is way lower.
Testing your anaerobic capacity has been researched much , but never been found a perfect test for it, but this test I'm reading about is the best test there is. Unfortunately I'm really shit at explaining this.
And about the VO2 max, at least in XCS, it is necessary to have a VO2 max of at least 80-85 ml/kg/min in the longer distances.

Skiers score higher VO2 max because they use more muscles (arms) than cyclists, so they increase their oxygen consumption.
I think the difference between VO2 max and VO2 should be clarified : VO2 max is... the maximum one can do.
But when you do no effort, you still have a VO2 (around 3 or 4 or something), at your threshold you also have a VO2, etc.
Maybe I could explain it better with charts (a W and HBPM would do). The relevant VO2 is a different one depending on the effort you're trying to do. VO2 max is relevant, together with anaerobic capacity, for 3 to 6 minutes efforts (depends on the sport and the people). VO2 at threshold is relevant for longer efforts, but not VO2 max there (but you can hardly have a good VO2 at threshold without a good VO2 max, and vice-versa to a lesser extent), except for the very last hundreds of meters.
Your anaerobic capacity determines how long you can maintain your VO2 max. |

Ugh, nice win for her, but I'd of liked to have seen Stevens take it. I just find her entire story hilarious. She was working on Wall Street and bought a road bike to get a little exercise, and 18 months later she was racing in Europe. Insane.
Got to give some goodbye props to Arndt though for the greatest second place victory salute ever:

And only 380€. What a bargain.
Nice win for Arndt. Too bad we won´t see her racing in the WC jersey next season.
