Well, they are working great, I have (almost) perfect traction even on pure ice!

By the way, I have been injured for almost two months now, I've got a bruising under the periosteum (bone membrane) of my tibia (shinbone). The doctor said I should not do sports until the swelling is gone.

I believe that with this pace my recovery will take at least another month: I don't see any difference with how it looked like two weeks ago Frown

Yeah, Ive heard of that. Itll take some time to heal! And even then, you have slowly build it up again, so say you will be able to start training in Mid December, you have to train very carefully and slowly incease the intensity... (That was the advice my friend got at least and he got it around the same time as you last year, maybe a month later). His whole season was affected as he wasnt fit at all for the indoor season and he still struggled in the outdoor season and ended the year with a season best 2:12... His PB is 2 dead...

So you may be in for a long one Wink

Woohoo! Rolling Eyes

Thanks for that reply though Wink

So... I've eventually joined the local track & field club. As my performances had reached some sort of plateau, I needed a different view to progress again, as I'm certain I have that potential in me (I don't want to be technical, but my VO2 used to be around 66 when I was a decent cyclist, it's short below 60 right now, and stagnates at 62-63 when I'm on form these days).

I've only had two group trainings yet, but I'm surprised by the little volume and intensity of trainings. I've spoked about it with the coach, who told me it's normal for runners, who do much less "volume" than cyclists.
Example : Sunday training, 20 minutes of slow jogging, then running very fats up a 9 % hill, which took us 30 seconds or something. Did it 7 times, and... that was it. As a cyclist, I'd have probably gone for 10 minutes of jogging, before doing the same exercise again, and the same for another time.

Same thing tonight, 25 minutes of jogging, 5 times 500 m close to M.A.S. and that was it. I'm not even tired. Frown

Did I over train myself these last few years ?

Track Training is a lot different than Road training... Though even my club (which only has about 7 Sprinters) train more than that (were are talking middle to long distance wise)...

You wont have overtrained yourself, but depending on your event, you havent used the right training for T&F events... Or they just have a pretty shitty &/or lazy T&F department... Wink

4 days straight of interval training in knee deep snow in -8 Celcius with 12m/s winds and today 2hours of football and 1 hour of basketball.

My legs are fuckin' spent. Thank God there's a storm coming so I can get some rest. I probably won't do any training on New Years Eve either, those days are reserved for eating, sleeping and drinking.

Going to run my first race since 4 months in a little over two hours.

My injury is not completely gone yet, but I trained last week and it didn't bother me at all, so I guess it's okay now.

The race itself is a 5km race starting on the track of my local club, then it goes in the forest which lies next to it, and then through the streets next to the forest.

This is an annual race, last year I finished in 26'12 because of a knee injury, I could barely even walk after the race.

Today I'm aiming for a time under 22'30, I know I am probably not in shape at all, but I'm sure I can beat my personal best of 21'45, which I ran 2 years ago.

I can only advice against this... A: as you say, you are still not injury free!
B: A race is not training, so the stress youll be applying is much worse for the injury! If you're lucky, then youll get through the race without any problems... But seeing that you couldnt walk last time around and are aiming for an even more ambitious time, Id say that you will not finish the race, aand even worse, might even jeopardise your season (depending on pain, doctors opinion etc...) before it even starts...

I have to agree... with both of you. Pfft
Reason says miggi's right, but I'd probably be caught doing the same as fcancellara.

Talking about that, I'm just back from my first race of the season, a 10,2 km with 600 odd participants. Circuit wasn't really performance friendly, with paths, stairs, (useless ?) hairpins, parts where you could barely overtake or be overtaken, etc.

All in all, I finished 88th with a time of 40'52", I passed the 5 km mark in 20'03".

Not so great, but still satisfying given I'm still half injured (periostitis + pulled calf) and was only running for the fourth time in a month or so.

Would you guys PLEASE listen to a voice of reason, even if its coming from a sprinter? I have seen noumerous people last screwing up their season (not just sprinter, but all crowds: Field Eventers, Middle Distance, Long Distance) because they were trying to come back from an injury to quick... Really annoying when it happens in the indoor season or early outdoor season...

Oh well, my race was pretty okay, apart from the fact that I wasn't in shape at all Wink

I didn't even notice my injury, so don't worry miggi Wink

My finishing time was 23'45, because I had serious stomach cramps (after the race I had to sit down on a bench for like 10 minutes before I could stand up straight again Pfft )

Depends on what you eat before racing, but generally you should finish eating 3 hours before the start to avoid such cramps.

My (light) breakfast was 1h45 before the race, I think it were the fries from last night that didn't really improve my performance

Well Thats just GREAT!

I was down to training on Tuesday and I got a cramp in my calf near the end of the session (2x3 120's in very very cold weather). I wasnt the only one though...
I got someone to press against my foot, and it went away. In order tostay away from injury i decided to change into flats and jog it out (as a warm down). A friend of mine came over to the equipment shed and asked me if I could help her stretch out her calf, since she got a slight cramp as well
(made for some very odd looks from people walking past the shed, as they heard the sounds Wink ). Anyway, we did 2 easy laps as a warm down (jogging) and it was grant. My calf still felt a little bit tight, but since I had been going flat out during the sess, it felt normal.
When I got home (cycled) I felt my calf tightening up a bit, so i decided to roll it out on a foam roller, and it got momentarily better, just to come backe even worse. Stretching and the like wont help, neither does foam rolling. It only helps for the odd minute or so and then its back. It is a stinging pain when i walk, stretching or flexing just triggers the pain, but doesnt do me any good. Sitting down for longer periods of time isnt great either, cause when I stand up, my calf feels really tight aferwards. (Great Omen when you have to do College work in the library...)
The pain sits a good 7-8 cm beneath the knee on the left side of the Gastrocnemius in my right leg...

My mum suggest something like I tore some fibres in my calf, but im not quite sure, since I havent got any bruising (But that might just be a sign that its a deeper tear, if it is one...). I was adviced to see a Physio (my parents live in germany), but thanks to my luck, this injury comes a month after my friend (a cert. physio) has left the country to work abroad...

So, Seems like my indoor season is over before it got started...
WELL FUCK!

Aquarius
You'll see how it evolves over a couple of days.
If it's something torn, stretching won't help (how'd you manage to stretch something broken ? you can't all you stretch is the intact fibres nearby). Other possibility is that it's something nervous, a nerve that'd have moved or something and would force a muscle to stay contracted.

If it's torn fibres, you should rush to a doctor, who should have you doing an echography.
There you might see blood inside your calf and have it pulled out, and you might also see broken fibres.

miggi133
I did normal calf stretches, but it feels all kinda stiff... I am going to see a physio tomorrow, and see what he says. Its all in college, so the doctor is right there as well...

Right, Up this goes!

After a 2 week abstinence from running I made my comeback today... Thanks to my injury I am going to miss the whole Indoor Season though, since there are only a small amount of races left, and varsities are on this weekend, where I cant compete cause I havent gotten a proper triple jump in, and thnks to my injury am not fit enough for a banter 400... And I missed the trials as well. There would be some Championships on Saturday, but the Entry was last week... In short, my indoor season is over... Even worse due to the fact that they just opened a new (worldchampionship standard) indoor track about an hour from Dubblin.

Delighted to be back to sprinting though... BUT, I may have picked the wrng day to come back. Session started at 6.30 and we did Plyos til 8:45 and just started running then... 4x120's. Needless to say, I am dead and my legs feel like rubber...

Hey, I did everything the Physio told me... Sit out for a whole week (in which the trials were, thus I have no chance of competing on friday) went on a relaxed jog on Monday (Physio said last Saturday earliest) and just then played guineapig for the plyo exercises today... And the runs were obviously relaxed (after 2 hours of plyo work its hardly possible to go flat out... Wink

Its just unfortunate for me that the indoor season is so damn short and a starts way to early (As early as the 8th of January) and is over a on the 13th & 14th of February...

10km: 50.03
15km: 1.20.13
20km: 2.00.15

After 12 kilometers my leg started to hurt, i runned till the 24 km point and then decided to stop.
