May 21, 2012 - Amgen Tour of California Stage 7

Race Preview

Ian: "The final real test of this race is a tough stage up to Mount Baldy. Three categorised climbs with the final one being very steep. It's a very short stage aswell so the climbing is almost constant."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-16.jpg

Ian: "JTL needs to go well today if he's gonna get back into the top fifteen, so the whole team will lay everything on the line for him. One guy will be going in the breakaway which will depend on the race situation."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0015-7.jpg

Ian: "It might be my turn to go on the attack today if I'm at the front of the peloton and the opportunity arises. If not, though, I will obviously give everything to help JTL."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0016-4.jpg
On the first climb the break went away and it was Ian Bibby in there for Endura. He was the highest placed rider in this group. The other main riders in the group were Boasson Hagen, Andre Cardoso and Bertogliati.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0017-4.jpg
With the peloton flying along thanks to Garmin, and lots of riders attacking, the breakaway was being rapidly reeled in. Bibby, therefore, went solo, hoping to "do a Wilko"! Unfortunately, there was still the main climb to come.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0018-5.jpg
And when Sammy Sanchez put in one big acceleration out of the peloton, it was over for Bibby, who quickly dropped back to help Tiernan-Locke. Evans followed Sanchez but Danielson brought it all back together.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0019-4.jpg
Unfortunately, Tiernan-Locke was caught on the wrong side of a split in the tiny peloton and had to fight back past everybody on his own. He was doing magnificently, riding good climbers clean off his wheel as he came back into top fifteen contention.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0020-4.jpg
Up at the front, the battle for the yellow jersey was intensifying. All Hesjedal needed to do was to stay with Evans and Schleck and those three had ridden away from everybody else along with Sanchez and Gesink. The winner would come from this elite group.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0021-2.jpg
But the TDF winner was in a league of his own as he increased the pace and left Schleck, Hesjedal and Sanchez way behind. Gesink clung on to the Aussie until the very end but Cadel easily took the win, and barring accident tomorrow, will win the Tour of California. Tiernan-Locke rode brilliantly to finish 17th on the stage and move him up to 14th overall. A much better day.

Ian's View

"That was good fun. Being in the breakaway is what I'd been looking forward to and with it being such a short stage, I was able to go really deep knowing it would be over soon. That's why I went solo so early as well as the fact that all the GC guys were already attacking and I wouldn't be able to keep up with them if they caught me. When I was caught, I was able to give JTL a bit of help and then he ended up outclimbing the likes of Tiralongo, Kern, Vande Velde and Verdugo. He's a great rider and we're lucky to have him. As for me, I moved back up to 27th, annoyingly one second behind Koren! Still, I've beaten Ten Dam, Sutherland and Brajkovic in a tough race so I can't be too unhappy. One stage to go."

Race Preview

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0022-3.jpg

Ian: "The final stage looks routine enough. Short and flat with a couple of climbs and sprints in the middle. It should be a bunch sprint but there will probably be a few people trying to gain a few seconds to improve their overall position."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-16.jpg

Ian: "Wilkinson will be going for the sprint again and JTL will need to be kept out of trouble. The rest of us will be doing domestique duties. One of us might be going for the breakaway but we'll see."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0023-3.jpg

Ian: "My job today is simple, to sit near the front of the peloton at the start just incase the team want me to respond to any attacks. If nothing comes of that, then I will look after Wilko again in the sprint and see if we can get another top ten."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0024-1.jpg
Despite not having any specific plans to go for the breakaway today, Endura ended up with two riders in the group of 13 that made it away. Camano and Bibby were both present as with such a big group, there was a good chance that it would be successful.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0025-1.jpg
But Rabobank and Radioshack were pulling the peloton along really quickly for their sprinters, Renshaw and Bennati, trying to get one last stage win in the sprint. However, they were struggling to pull back such a big group, who were working really well together.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0026-1.jpg
And then with nine kilometres to go, there was a massive crash in the middle of the peloton, bringing down many big names. The guys at the front slowed down to wait and see who was involved which allowed the breakaway to pull away. One of the front thirteen would now take the stage win. In the crash, Bernie Eisel took a nasty knock and will now miss the TDF, a big blow for Cav.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0027-1.jpg
Back at the front, Camano had done his job in leading out the better sprinter, Bibby but there were better sprinters than Ian in this group. However, the two best sprinters, Sulzberger and Martias had nothing left. Could Bibby get the win?

Well, this is Ian's view of the finish so, erm, no. Koren of Liquigas took the win ahead of Sicard, Parisien, Preidler and fifth placed Bibby. Not quite enough left in the tank after yesterday's big effort. Camano rolled in thirteenth. Now, we had to wait for the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0029.jpg
And would you believe it, there was another big crash. This one was more significant though. It was caused when Ryder Hesjedal got it all wrong in the last corner and took Cancellara out. The carnage that ensued took down more big riders but Hesjedal was the big loser, dropping from second all the way to sixth. Ouch.

Ian's View

"Well, that wasn't expected but the team told me to jump across to the break as it was so big. So I did but I just didn't have enough left in the legs after a hard week. Iker was brilliant for me at the end there and I had a good kick but not enough. Fifth place is good in a race like this though. Oh, and I managed to jump into 25th overall because of all the crashes. I would have taken that before the race! JTL also moved up a place into 13th because Kern was involved in the crash. Not much of a difference but hey, a place is a place! And finally, Wilko brings home another jersey with the polka dot one. His trophy cabinet must be getting pretty full now, what a man! We're off back home now and a little rest and time with the family. Speak soon."

Ian's Blog

roadcyclinguk.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/BibbyEndura.jpg

June 3, 2012

That's another month down as the season hurtles along. We're now in June, amazingly which is of course a big month for anyone looking to get a new contract Wink. Fortunately, that's not me! Anyway, here's the monthly review for May;

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0030.jpg

The big race of the month was of course the Giro. It was dominated by Igor Anton, who beat Cobo by six minutes. Nibali took third by beating Rujano in the final time trial. Anton won the points and climber's jerseys aswell. Sebastien Chavanel took an impressive win in Dunkerque, with other big wins going to Jonas Jorgensen, Evans, Steve Cozza and Leif Hoste, who just did enough to hold off Boonen in Belgium. Marcel Kittel had an astonishing month as he took his tally of victories for the season to 19!! It's only June! Can't wait to see what he can do in Le Tour.

In the rankings, Endura are still second behind Project 1t4i but the big teams are breathing down our necks. In the individual rankings, JTL is third behind two dominant German sprinters, Kittel and Schulze. For those interested, I'm around 120th, so I'm gonna have to put in a strong late run if I want to win!!

I've spent some time at home and I'm now in France again training for the next part of my season. I have the Tour de Rijke in the Netherlands in a couple of days and then the Route du Sud in France later in the month. I don't know if I'll be able to hold my shape until then but we'll have to see. At the end of the month is the British RR Championships aswell, so we need to prepare for some anti-Sky operations! Trying to beat Cav/Swift/Thomas will be fun! At least we'll have a full team to work with.

Let's get out there,

Ian Bibby

So Near Yet So Far For Endura in Luxembourg

Endura Racing took part in the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg this week taking in some of the toughest roads the tiny country has to offer. Over five stages, the peloton were fully tested with all sorts of riders getting the chance to show themselves. The prologue was dominated by Garmin, Farrar beating Danielson and Hesjedal to the yellow jersey. Endura's highest finisher was Partridge but it was already an uphill task for the team. Stage two saw a magnificent ride by Russell Downing, who jumped on Kittel's wheel at the end and followed the unstoppable German to a fantastic second place.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0001-24.jpg
Downing was magnificent on Stage Two as he followed Marcel Kittel all the way to the line for a second place.

The next three stages were tough, hilly stages and the order of the day was breakaways. Unfortunately, stages three and four didn't go well for the team with only Partridge being strong enough to stay in GC contention. Stage five was one for the breakaway as a group of ten made it to the end. Cronshaw was present for Endura but after a hard day in the saddle, he had to settle for fifth at the finish. In the overall standings, it was FDJ's Pierrick Fedrigo who took the win, just ahead of Chris Horner and Wout Poels. Garmin faded as the race went on, whilst Endura's best finisher was Rob Partridge in a solid fifteenth position. It was certainly a valuable race for everyone though.

Nice riding by Downing on stage 2, proves that he can mix it with the best Wink

brewers90
Well, I was a bit surprised that he could hang on when Kittel kicked but Downing is clearly one of the quickest sprinters in the world. Pfft

And I have some plans for the British Champs. but none of them will work more than likely!!

Ian: "A pan flat Dutch race that is 99.9% certain to end in a bunch sprint. Nothing else to say really."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-18.jpg

Ian: "Due to the nature of the race we don't really have a specific leader but Wilko will be looking to get in amongst it in the probable bunch sprint. Mandri and Blain can both sprint aswell, of course."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0004-17.jpg

Ian: "Like most of the team, I am a free element. If I'm not involved in some sort of attack, I'll help the sprinters at the end. It's not the most exciting race for the non-sprinters though!"

Ian: "There are no top sprinters here so it's a fairly open race. Bonnet, Nizzolo, Impey, Kreder, Veelers and Ista should be up there at the end. Sky seem to have brought a team with no leader and there are a lot of climbers here considering the type of race it is."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0005-16.jpg
After the race had settled down, a breakaway of thirteen riders established itself. Tiernan-Locke was having a change today by getting himself in there. Other notable riders were Rohregger, Coenen and Bagdonas.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0006-16.jpg
The peloton sprung into life with 80kms to go with several teams on the front. Radioshack, FDJ and Accent Jobs were the main teams, working for Nizzolo, Bonnet and Ista respectively.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0007-14.jpg
With the peloton upon the breakaway, five riders decided to give it one last go. Both Tiernan-Locke and Rohregger were in there along with three weaker riders. The gap was stationary at just over a minute as the sprinters' teams were sorting themselves out.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0008-14.jpg
With just six kilometres to go, Devillers of Landbouwkrediet was the last man out ahead of the peloton and despite giving it everything, he was caught soon after. As the sprint wound up, Bibby was near the front, but no sprinters could get to him!

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0009-14.jpg
It was Radioshack's Nizzolo who popped out from behind everyone at the last to take the win from De Ketele and Rick Zabel, showing his potential already. FDJ were fourth and fifth with Roux and Bonnet. Our sprinters never got to the front so Bibby was the best finisher in sixteenth. A Frustrating day for Endura.

Ian's View

"How did that happen? I was waiting at the front for a sprinter to get on my wheel but all of them were blocked. A little bit unlucky that! Just outside the top fifteen for me aswell which makes it even worse. Oh well, it was never a big goal, for me or the team, but a good result would obviously have been nice. I'm off to the Med again now to get some training in in the Pyrenees ahead of some tough races coming up, Route du Sud and the Tour of Austria. Got to find the mountain legs!"

Ian's Blog

roadcyclinguk.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/BibbyEndura.jpg

June 15, 2012

Hi guys, it's time for another blog.

I'm in the south of France for the Route du Sud which kicks off tomorrow and I'm certainly looking forward to this race, if "looking forward to" is the right way to put it! We have some great climbs in this race, the Col du Menté, Col d'Aspin, Port de Bales and the legendary Col du Tourmalet. Should be "fun" Frown So I'm in the hotel room which I'm sharing with Jonny McEvoy, as I have done at every single race so far this season. Camano is our leader here and I am his main Lieutenant in the mountains, should be interesting.

The transfer season is approaching now and I can't wait to see what the management have got in store. Because of our great season, we are making the step up to Pro-Conti for next season and because of that, we have a bigger budget Smile. This means that we'll be signing a couple of higher-profile riders to help the team improve. The transfer policy is still to develop British riders and we will be looking to have a high percentage of British riders. Windsor and Anderson don't fit into this plan as they are Australian and they have been told that they will not get new contracts. Thwaites is also leaving as management feel he won't be good enough for the step up. As I mentioned earlier in the year, Camano wants to leave to pursue a new challenge as he approaches the end of his career, so we won't be able to profit from his services next year. Of course, there are plenty of riders out there available but it's about getting riders who will fit into the team and deliver performances from the off. Wiggins is out of contract, why not?! Pfft

To the next race,

Race Preview

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0001-25.jpg

Ian: "The first stage is simple enough. A couple of hills to get out of the way but a flat run-in means a bunch sprint is a certainty, unless someone fancies an epic attack."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-23.jpg

Ian: "Today, we'll be working for Cronshaw because he is in better shape than our other sprinters. We won't be going for the break as a bunch sprint is practically inevitable today."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-19.jpg

Ian: "I won't be doing anything at all for the first 190kms but I will help position Mandri and Cronshaw in the final five kilometres. Hopefully, a good result is possible if Matt has good legs."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0004-18.jpg
Lots of riders fancied the breakaway today, strangely, and eventually a group of fourteen riders settled itself ahead of the peloton. Galdos, Bellemakers, Janorschke, Menzies and Gastauer being the biggest names. Also present was the wonderfully named, Gaylord Cumont.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0005-17.jpg
With the gap to the lead group hitting nine and a half minutes, Endura decided to lend a hand to the French teams at the head of the peloton. FDJ and Europcar were flying along and the gap soon came down. The breakaway was caught with 12kms to go.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0006-17.jpg
Into the final five kilometres and it was our leadout train against Roubaix's. To start with we were winning but we simply ran out of riders and we struggled in the final three kilometres. Cronshaw had a lot of work to do.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0007-15.jpg
The finish was extremely close with Mondory just pipping Caethoven by, well, you can see how much! Dehaes, Turgot and Rollin completed the top five. Cronshaw made up some ground to finish seventh, whilst Flahaut was terrible andcould only get tenth despite his team's good work. Everybody finished in the same time.

Ian's View

"It went well today apart from the last five kilometres when we ran out of bodies in the train. I had to pull the two sprinters along for over three kilometres and by the time Mandri could go, we were way back. Cronshaw did well though and got a decent top ten. Into the Pyrenees tomorrow."

*NOTE* My game crashed after the first stage of the Route du Sud and the save got corrupted. There was no backup strangely, so I had to get a weekly save. This got corrupted as soon as I pressed advance. AngryAngryAngry So I had to go back another week. This means that some of the results are different but that shouldn't really matter too much. The main problem is that the startlist for this race changed quite a lot the second time, so the results above will have no bearing on the rest of the race.

Sorry for this but there is nothing I can do about it. Until Cyanide can make a game that doesn't corrupt your save for no reason, this will continue to happen. Basically ignore the first stage! My team is obviously the same and the startlist is broadly similar, but there is no Dan Martin and Vanendert for example. The startlist in the stage one report is the correct one. Nothing else on the report is. Pfft Angry

Great story so far! I'm looking forward to the next results. I hope Bibby can bring home a victory for the team this season!

Race Preview

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0001-26.jpg

Ian: "What a stage this is! The Col d'Aspin serves as a warm up for the iconic Col du Tourmalet. It will be my first time up it in a competitive situation. The final climb to Cauterets isn't too difficult but after a long day it will feel like it is."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-23.jpg

Ian: "Today is all about getting Camano as far up the GC as possible. We only have three climbers here with Mandri and myself being the others so we have to rely on other teams until the end. Camano is in great shape though."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-19.jpg

Ian: "I am Camano's Lieutenant today and will be the last one with him on the final climb, hopefully! Got to keep myself out of trouble over the Aspin and Tourmalet and then get to work."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-24.jpg
The breakaway took an absolute age to form today, with many attempts being shut down. Eventually, five riders made it away, here on the Col d'Aspin. Navardauskas, Kaisen, Galland, Blot and Dernies were the riders.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-20.jpg
With nobody seemingly wanting to take up the chase on the Tourmalet, it was left to Mandri to pace the peloton up. The gap was tumbling down, as were the numbers in the peloton. A few people tried half-hearted attacks but Mandri was in control.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0004-19.jpg
Over the summit of the legendary Col, it was Navardauskas taking maximum points. Chuzhda and Casar were now part of this group after attacking near the top, but they knew that they needed to push on on the descent if they wanted to stay away.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0005-18.jpg
And in the valley, Casar had a very small advantage but it would all come back together soon. The final climb was approaching and positioning was all important. Mandri brought Camano and Bibby to the front before sitting up. His job was done.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0006-18.jpg
Onto the climb and the attacks were going left, right and centre, but Rolland was the only one to really get away though. Bibby was doing a great job pulling Camano up the mountain, before letting Iker go at three kilometres to the finish.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0007-16.jpg
But there was nothing anybody could do about Rolland, who is in a league of his own in this race. He beat Nico Roche by almost a minute to seize the yellow jersey. Camano outsprinted both Casar and Sutherland to claim a brilliant third place. Bibby came home 14th, just behind Mombaerts.

Ian's View

"That's a great result. We'll take that! I have to say the Tourmalet is as hard as it looks on the TV but at least I can now say I have survived it! Mandri was fantastic today and made my job easy as I just had to look after Iker for about five kilometres. It was a very high pace on that final climb and I almost blew my legs off completely! But I did my job and Camano certainly did his, almost catching Roche on the line, what a super ride by him. Anyone would think he was looking for a new contract Wink"
