Settimana Coppi e Bartali Stage 2 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-51.jpg
Favourites: Vacansoleil, Team Type 1, Bank BGZ

The moment of truth for the guys. This is a damage limitation exercise against the strong Vacansoleil squad. We have only had one training session for this so far. Fingers crossed.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-42.jpg
One of the first teams on the road was the Italian big boys, Lampre. However, having brought just five riders here, they were always going to struggle. They finished last over 100 seconds down on the eventual winners.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-49.jpg
Pozzovivo was out trying to rescue his race after a disastrous first day, and along with the white jersey-wearing Modolo, his Colnago team finished ninth. Not great from the Giro regulars.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-40.jpg
On paper, our Polish rivals, Bank BGZ, looked like a great bet for a podium finish here, but they ended up fourth, albeit with the same time as third placed Farnese Vini.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-48.jpg
Team Type 1 had some strong chrono men, including former Swiss TT champion Bertogliati and Bodrogi. They put in an expected strong performance to claim second spot.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-35.jpg
The penultimate team to set off, we knew what we had to do. Kocjan led us off, ahead of the green, yellow and polka dot jerseys. Some strong pulls by Bozic, Bole and Spilak got us a respectable fifth place just ahead of Liquigas. We'll take that.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0010-23.jpg
The final team were also the quickest. Dutch World Tour team Vacansoleil did what everyone expected them to do, despite having what seemed to be some communication problems at the start, as Veuchelen and Ruijgh had a bit of a disagreement at the back of the line. They take the win by seven seconds.

Team Summary
Well, not too bad at all. We only lost around half a minute, and it could have been a heck of a lot worse. We will get better at this team time trialling thing with experience but at the moment we're novices and we can only watch Vacansoleil and applaud them. Spilak and Bole both put in mammoth pulls on the front and everybody else contributed to a solid result. Now we've got to get that leader's jersey back tomorrow on another flat stage.

Stage Winner

@sutty, yeah, it was a lot better than I expected. I usually come last in these damn things, but there were some strong individuals out there. Bole may end up being our man for the GC if he can gain some more bonus seconds.

Settimana Coppi e Bartali Stage 3 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-52.jpg
Favourites: Bozic, Napolitano, Modolo, Gatto, Viviani

This stage is pan flat so will definitely end in a sprint. Today should be a day for Bozic but as with stage 1, we will wait to see how our sprinters feel on the day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-49.jpg
At the start of the stage, there were numerous attacks. About twenty riders were trying to get away but the majority of them were unsuccessful.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-44.jpg
Eventually, a 13 man group formed at the head of the race, including three Acqua & Sapone riders, Masciarelli, Proni and Marzoli. They gained a maximum advantage of seven minutes with 80km to go.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-36.jpg
Farnese Vini and, surprisingly, Miche were doing the bulk of the work at the head of the peloton, working for Gatto and Szczawinski respectively. Vacansoleil weren't contributing at all, much to everybody's surprise.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0009-32.jpg
This race has already been marred by crashes, and it would carry on today. The first of the crashes happened near the back and only a few riders were involved. A bit later, though, a much bigger crash took down Capecchi, Failli, Bertogliati, Ruijgh, Hoogerland and Zaballa amongst many others.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0010-24.jpg
Into the last five kilometres, and it was a battle between our leadout and Farnese Vini's. Szymd is on the front here in his polka dot jersey, whilst Bozic was sat behind Bole and Kocjan, as he would be our man for today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0012-15.jpg
On the final corner, Garzelli fell for the third time in this race, and this delayed a lot of riders, and brought down Pozzovivo, Rebellin and others. Unfortunately Szymd was caught on the wrong side of the delay but Spilak was just on the right side.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0011-18.jpg
Amidst all the carnage, it was easy to forget that there was a sprint going on, and up ahead it was a very close finish with the top six being separated by very little. Modolo took the win for Colnago, just ahead of Gatto, Viviani, Bozic and Downing.

Team Summary
A top five finish for Borut today isn't what we wanted, but at least we kept everybody out of the crashes today and heading in to the first hilly stage we still have Bole, Bozic, Kocjan and Spilak up near the top of the GC. We also have the green and polka dot jerseys aswell, so not too bad.

Our next race, which will run concurrently with our race in Italy is the prestigious Critérium International on the island of Corsica, France. At just three stages, it is a short race but it is a very thorough early season examination of GC riders as it contains one mountain stage with a summit finish and a short time trial, as well as a very short flat stage for the sprinters. We enter the race with Peter Velits as our leader and Kiserlovski as a free element who will see what he can do despite being an average time triallist. Other riders here are climber Marczynski, all rounder Grivko and Stybar, who is effectively our sprinter for stage two, although we won't be expecting any result from him. Balint Szeghalmi also makes his debut here.

Critérium International Stage 1 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-53.jpg
Favourites: Rolland, Kruijswijk, P.Velits, Moncoutié, Kiserlovski

This first stage is evil, with four huge mountains to be climbed, and other smaller peaks all day. A true climber should win today. We'll have to hope that Peter feels good out there.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-40.jpg
The very first attack formed the BotD, with two groups of four getting ahead of the peloton. Szeghalmi was in there on his debut as well as Honig, Delaroziere and Jonathan Clarke.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-43.jpg
With the two groups now together, the climbing begun. On this particularly steep section, you can see Szeghalmi near the back, where the Hungarian would stay for most of the stage. His lack of fitness was really hindering his climbing.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-41.jpg
Two thirds of the way though the stage, five more riders attacked. They were Callegarin, Willems, Fédrigo, Marque Proto and, for us, Marczynski. They rode strongly across the gap and had caught the original breakaway by the foot of the final climb.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-50.jpg
The French teams, Cofidis and Europcar were on the front though, and as the pace was increased, the peloton was down to just 50 or so riders. We had Velits, Kiserlovski and Grivko in this group.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-45.jpg
As the break hit the slopes of the Col de l'Ospedale, Marczynski was setting the pace, and the guys from the original breakaway were scattered all the way down the climb. Szeghalmi did a great job today, but it was over for him.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-37.jpg
The first of the favourites to attack, Rolland tested his legs, and nobody followed. Cofidis were still keeping the pace high in the main bunch and the breakaway were now in sight for the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0009-33.jpg
But Rolland and the lead group were all caught by the Cofidis train. Marczynski is at the front here, whilst behind Kiserlovski is trying to bring Velits to the front, and Grivko and Szeghalmi have already been dropped.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0010-25.jpg
Into the last few kilometres, and Rolland attacked again. Just like before, nobody could go with him, and he took an easy victory. The French will be going crazy again tonight, no doubt. He pulled out a gap of 45 seconds over Efimkin and Kruijswijk, who round out the podium.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0011-19.jpg
Velits had tried to go with Kruijswijk, but was just distanced at the end. Fourth place for Peter, a minute behind the superb Rolland. Kiserlovski and Marczynski both came home two minutes down in a group with De Maar and Gautier.

Team Summary
Fourth place is not a bad result in such a difficult stage, but we were a bit disappointed that Peter couldn't stay with Kruijswijk and Efimkin. He might have a chance to pass them in the time trial though. He is a very good time triallist but he is more than twenty seconds down on them. Great rides from Szeghalmi and Marczynski aswell in the breakaways, but slightly disappointed with the rides of Kiserlovski and Grivko. Next up in this race is a short, flat stage and then a short TT.

Settimana Coppi e Bartali Stage 4 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-54.jpg
Favourites: Bosisio, Hoogerland, Bole, Marcato, Failli

This stage is very hilly and should be very selective. The mission is to keep at least Bole and Spilak up in the front group. A breakaway will probably take the glory today, especially after so many top riders lost time in crashes on stages one and three.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-41.jpg
At the beginning, five riders went away from the peloton and built up a one minute lead. However, behind them, another 13 riders tried to bridge the gap which, unsurprisingly, caused the end of that break.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-44.jpg
Bole then took the second intermediate sprint to get a few more seconds as well as retake the lead in the points competition from Bozic.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-50.jpg
Eventually, a breakaway did form. It was just two riders originally, Garzelli and Bertogliati, but they were later joined by Mandri, Zaballa and Agnoli. The best placed rider on GC was Agnoli just over three minutes down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-42.jpg
Behind, in the peloton, the pace was very high, and Bozic just couldn't hang on to the back of the group. The green jersey slipping agonisingly out of the back, whilst Der, Hocevar and Majka were also dropping back fast.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-51.jpg
Into the final circuit and the main peloton was down to just nine riders with Marcato still in there with two of his team mates, Hoogerland and Ruijgh. None of our riders were in it, Szymd in the next group, with Spilak and Bole in the one after that. Up ahead Garzelli attacked and was heading for an easy win.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-46.jpg
And amongst some lapped riders, including Bozic, Garzelli takes the stage win after leaving Bertogliati and Mandri behind on the final climb. Capecchi, Bosisio and Hoogerland gained some time on the other riders in the "peloton", whilst Szymd was our highest finisher in 18th, losing around 30 seconds to the main favourites.

Team Summary
Today was not a good day for the team as our riders were dropped one by one, until we had nobody in the main group. Szymd was very strong today but he had already done a lot of work for the team, otherwise he may have been in that main group. We still have three men in the top ten, but they are at the wrong end of the top ten, so we have to salvage a result from the next two stages. One of those stages is a time trial, so we will have to hope that Spilak has a good day. We can at least take the green jersey home if Bole can get a result on the final stage.

Critérium International Stage 2 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-55.jpg
Favourites: J.Haedo, Bonnet, Matthews, Traksel, Flahaut

This is a very short stage that will surely end in a sprint. We have no sprinter, although Stybar does have a good kick. We'll have to see what we can do, but the main job is to keep Peter Velits safe and fresh for the final stage.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-42.jpg
Unsurprisingly on such a short stage, the attacks started from the gun, with a group of nine getting a minute's advantage almost instantly. Juraj Sagan had infiltrated this group for us, as he was free from domestique duties today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-45.jpg
As the BotD went through the one sprint of the day, the group had swelled to eleven riders, with another two bridging across behind them.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-51.jpg
With the breakaway almost back in the peloton, Sagan went solo and did superbly, holding the peloton at bay for a further 12km despite them flying along.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-43.jpg
But it was impossible to hold them off and Juraj, along with Van de Walle, who had only just attacked, were brought back. On the corner in the background, another massive pile up was just about to occur, involving Deignan, Gautier and Callegarin.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-52.jpg
The pace then completely slowed down, allowing Van Emden, Le Lay, Saramotins and Stybar to get away. These four riders stayed away and Le Lay took the win with Zdenek a terrific third. Matthews won the bunch sprint with the same time as the front four.

Team Summary
An unexpected podium today as Stybar proved his worth to the team. A great decision to follow an attack from Le Lay but unfortunately he didn't fully commit and eased off to save a bit of energy for the sprint. He probably could have won as he is a better sprinter than Le Lay. Another big crash aswell in the middle of the peloton, which we managed to avoid. Four riders picked up injuries, the biggest name being Pichot of Europcar.

Settimana Coppi e Bartali Stage 5 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-39.jpg
Favourites: Garzelli, Voss, Mortensen, Bibby, Popkov

A short time trial that shouldn't see big changes on the GC, but weaker TT men could definitely lose a few places here. Spilak is our only hope of getting a result here, we have to hope he has a good day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0009-34.jpg
The early pacesetter was Mugerli (Adria Mobil), who held the lead for a long time after setting off early. The Slovenian putting himself in the shop window as we look for targets to sign for next season.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0011-20.jpg
He was eventually knocked off the top by Serov of RusVelo by fractions of a second.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0012-17.jpg
Serov's team mate Trussov is a strong time trialllist and he smashed the best time by seven seconds to set a very imposing time.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0013-14.jpg
But French-Hungarian veteran Laszlo Bodrogi has been doing this for many years and he set the new fastest time by a single second.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0014-15.jpg
Former Polish time trial champ, Lukasz Bodnar then went seven whole seconds quicker than Bodrogi as the times began to really tumble.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0018-7.jpg
Talented British youngster Ian Bibby was the next to go quickest as he knocked three seconds off of Bodnar's time. The Endura rider showing off his chrono skills.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0019-8.jpg
However, his teammate, Paul Voss went round in a stunning time as he obliterated Bibby's time by 12 seconds! Voss was clearly on it today, superb effort.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0021-7.jpg
Yesterday's stage winner, and today's stage favourite, Garzelli, made great progress on his ride aswell. He just pipped Voss' time by 1 second, and it looked like he had another stage win in the bag.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0023-4.jpg
Our day had been abysmal so far, with none of our riders even squeezing into the top 40. However, Spilak was out there trying to change that. Unfortunately, he was poor aswell, coming in 34 seconds down on Garzelli, and behind Hoogerland and Russ Downing. Not our day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0024-4.jpg
The final rider on the course was Marcato, still in the yellow jersey he picked up thanks to the TTT on stage two. However, Marcato was not the reason for that team victory as time trialling is his main weakness. He was never going to lose his lead though on such a short TT, and he finished just three seconds behind Spilak.

Team Summary
A terrible day for the team, we didn't manage to get anybody in to the top 15 which is pretty poor for our high early season standards. However, as we said in our race preview, we never had any GC goals, we just wanted to get some stage wins. We have one so far, with one more chance on tomorrow's final stage to pick up one more. With some bonus seconds tomorrow Bole could still finish seventh aswell. Moving on.

Critérium International Stage 3 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0026-3.jpg
Favourites: Van Emden, P.Velits, Engoulvent, Vogondy, Grivko

This very short time trial brings the Critérium International to a close, hopefully Velits and/or Grivko can get themselves up there on this stage. It should be too short for Peter to make up the time to Efimkin and get on the podium but let's see.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0028-1.jpg
The first of the favourites to set off was Jimmy Engoulvent and the Frenchman went 21 seconds quicker than Samuel Caldeira, who had set the early benchmark for Tavira.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0029-1.jpg
Paul Martens is a good time triallist, and the German managed to better Engoulvent's time by one second. This was the start of a raft of Rabobank riders to come down the start ramp and go quickly.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0030-1.jpg
Jos Van Emden was the clear favourite for the stage victory but he couldn't displace his Rabobank teammate Martens, even though he set the same time.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0031-1.jpg
Then, Dutch TT champion Clement set off. However, he was nowhere near his team mates and had to settle for eighth at the end of the day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0032-1.jpg
Ukrainian Grivko was out there in his aerodynamic position, and the former national time trial champion did very well, setting a solid time four seconds down on Martens.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0033-1.jpg
Cofidis' leader Vogondy also set a very useful time, but still not good enough to end the Rabo-domination. He went third, one second down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0034-1.jpg
Peter Velits had the number 1 on his back, and he was hoping to show that he was number one out on the course. He seemed to be going quickly, but he was consistently losing time over the 7km and finished 7th, seven seconds down on the winner Martens.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0035-1.jpg
As we were expecting, the time gaps were very small, and so Rolland was effectively on a victory parade. Time trialling is not his strong point, but he comfortably clinched this year's Critérium International. Cue overreaction from the French public.

Team Summary
Well, both Andriy and Peter did what we hoped they would do today and were both deep in the top ten. Unfortunately, Velits missed out on third place by just five seconds, but fourth in a big French race like this certainly puts the team on the map. A good ride from Martin Velits today aswell in joint 28th place. One more stage in Italy to tell you about before we head off to April.

Settimana Coppi e Bartali Stage 6 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0037.jpg
Favourites: Bole, Marcato, Hoogerland, Bosisio, Spilak

The final stage of this race is a circuit with six difficult climbs, including four times over the Montegibbio, with gradients up to 18.5%. That will definitely separate the men from the boys. However, I would expect the breakaway to fight for victory here as the gaps on GC are so big.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0038.jpg
The breakaway formed very quickly and as they hit the first climb, the ten riders were all together a minute ahead of the peloton. The pace was very leisurely in the main bunch

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0039.jpg
After the first ascent of the Montegibbio, the breakaway were over six minutes clear of the peloton and there was still no sign of any teams chasing.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0040.jpg
As the leaders went over the summit for the final time with just 8km to go, they were still twelve minutes ahead of the peloton. The best placed rider was Kochetkov, who was just over 12 minutes down, and looked like he might win the race!

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0041.jpg
As soon as the road levelled, Padour (Whirlpool) kicked and tried to leave his breakaway companions behind. With just the final descent left he pulled out a 25 second advantage and looked good for the stage win.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0042.jpg
Despite the other escapees closing fast and Janiazcyk coming very quickly, Padour just held on for the win. Kohut, Kochetkov and Fajt were also in the lead group. Would Kochetkov take the overall?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0043.jpg
After Bole had tried an attack just before the final climb, Spilak went for it just after it. He got clear of the peloton but, incredibly, was given the same time as the peloton, despite there being clear air between them. The gap back to the peloton was exactly 11:30, meaning Marcato holds on and takes the win here.

Team Summary
This was one of the most boring stages this team will ever take part in. We tried to animate it late on, but nobody was interested in racing today, very nearly causing Marcato to lose the race to a guy who started the day over 12 minutes down! Unfortunately, Kochetkov climbing to third means we get ninth with Bole and tenth with Spilak. This has not been our race but at least we managed to get that win way back on stage 1. That also marks the end of our third month as a team, as we head into April, and the classics get in full swing.

The first Spanish World Tour race of the season the Volta a Catalunya takes place in, believe it or not, the Spanish region of Catalunya! It contained seven stages with equal opportunities for sprinters, climbers, punchers and baroudeurs. The winner of the race was a little bit surprising but he rode fantastically and was in all the key breaks on the hilly stages.

The first of the three big cobbled classics, Gent-Wevelgem takes place in Belgium over 235 kilometres. The main difficulty is the cobbled climb of the Kemmelberg but the race is mainly about who can deal with the relentless pace and conditions. The winner of the race was a true cycling legend, who claimed his third victory here. Yup, you guessed it, Tom Boonen took the victory beating Hushovd in the final sprint for the line, while Spartacus was left trailing in their wake but still climbed on the podium. Another notable result was Thomas in fifth, carrying on his remarkable start to the season that has seen him jump right up in the world rankings. G is on a roll, and it will be interesting to see what he can do in De Ronde and beyond.
