The first of the three Grand Tours is the Giro D'Italia. IN it, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the union of Italy, so the organisation has decided to visit as many regions as possible. ANd they've also made this year's Giro the toughest of the 3 GT's, with only 63 timetrial kilometres: 19 TTT, 44 ITT with 12.5 climbing km's!
Of the normal stages, there are 7 mountain top finishes, of whom the stage to the horrible Monte Zoncolan is most feared by the cyclists.
The 2010 edition started in the Netherlands, with Wesley Sneijder's wife Yolanthe as the tourmiss:
The race was won by Liquigas Ivan Basso. David Arroyo (Caisse) got 2nd, Vincenzo Nibali 3rd.

Our team:
Our goal:
Top 3 in the GC with Robert Gesink and at leat one stage win. Theo Bos has no pressure of winning a stage. There is no train for him, so he can go his own way (one tip: take the wheel of Petacchi!)
GC favourites:
Alberto Contador is the biggest favourite. Although he hasn't won much this year, he is the best GC-rider in the world, and therefore the favourite. Excellent in time trials and probably the best climber in the world, a combination that makes him the favourite, even his form is uncertain.
To the surprise of everyone, Liquigas main rider for the GC isn't Vincenzo Nibali (the Sicilian isn't even participating), but Ivan Basso. Basso wants to defend his title and win the Giro again.
After getting 2nd in the Giro del Trentino and winning the Tour de Romandie, Monster Energy - Ford's Robert Gesink is one rider to look for. He seems the only opponent from Contador, who can challenge the Saxo-rider not only in the mountains, but also in the TT's.
Outsiders:
Igor Anton is one of the best climbers in the world, but lacks TT-quality. The quetsion is of the Euskaltel-rider wants to get a good GC-result, or if he focusses on a stage win and tries to win the Vuelta.
Janez Brajkovic is the protegee of Lance Armstrong. He has the qualities of getting a GC-podium, but tends to have a bad day every time. When all pieces fall together, the Slovenian is a serious contender!
Irish Daniel Martin is a guy who can climb, but who still has to learn a lot. He probably will win a stage and get a top 10 in the GC, but can he surprise?
José Rujano's story is similar to that from Igor Anton: he is a world class climber, but has really bad TT-skills. But with only a few TT-kilometres in this Giro, he might get a posium for Venezuela!
Belgian Jurgen van den Broeck showed in last years's Tour de France that he has learned to ride a good GC with the 5th place. This year he will focus at thet Tour again, but should be able to get a top 5 in the Giro as well.
Sprinters
Alessandro Petacchi is one of the oldest sprinter, but one of the best. The Lampre rider always wins stages in his home country.
Ale Jet's most important opponent will probably be American Tyler Farrar. He has a very strong Garmin - Cervélo team behind him!
Also Daniele Bennati is looking for some wins on his home soil. It's still uncertain if his transfer to the new Leopard-team will bring him some victories.
Monster's Theo Bos can beat everyone, but can also be beaten by everyne. The former track sprints world champ needs to learn a lot, but has great potential.
The fastest Russian alive: Katusha's Denis Galimzyanov is a young sprinter, but can perform great when the circumstances are tough.
HTC - Highroad starts without the best sprinter in the world (probably of all time), so Matthew Goss has to take his place. The Aussie is young, but has a great sprint train with Brammeier, Grabsch and leadout Mark Renshaw.
German Gerald Ciolek can beat all the sprinters in the world, but can also perform disastrous. Probably he won't win a stage, but a top 3 should be possible.
Francisco Ventoso is one of the top 3 sprinters from Spain. It remains uncertain how he will perform outside his homecountry.
Climbers:
The same as the GC-riders.
Who's missing?
To the surprise of many, no wildcards were given to Acqua & Sapone and Colnago. That means that Stefano Garzelli and Domenico Pozzovivo won't partricipate, just as sprinter Sacha Modolo. It is also a big surprise that Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) and Michele Scarponi (Lampre) won't participate. Will those 2 start in the Tour de France?

Stage 1:
Monster Energy - Ford performs pretty bad. With some good TT-riders in it (Posthuma, Gesink, Kelderman), we can't get the speed and finish in last place at 1'13 (or is the known TTT-bug in PCM?)
Euskaltel with GC-contendor Igor Anton do very well, 42 seconds behind the winner.
Also Ivan Basso has to gain some time. Liquigas finishes in 11th, same time as Euskaltel.
Alberto Contandor works his ass off, but his Saxo Bank team mates don't perform better than 8th place, at 29 seconds.
Omega Pharma - Lotto starts very well with the 5th place, at 26 seconds!
Rabobank is the best Benelux-based team with the 4th place at 24 seconds. A good starting position for Steven Kruiswijk and Luis Leon Sanchez.
We enter the top 3 with Radioshack. Janez Brajkovic and his teammates are 13 seconds slower than the winner.
HTC-Highroad was the favourite to win, but they get 2nd at four seconds.
And who wins it? Movistar! A little surprise, but the team consists of decent and good TT-riders. They finish in 24'42.

Word from the DS: A terrible start of this Giro. Even with riding on dot 90, the team lost 50 seconds in the first half.... Oh well, as long as our bad day is behind us...

not a terribly bad start. shoulda be able to make it up in the later stages with mountain climbers etc. I have a feeling youll get a top 3 for the giro. Are you targeting any jerseys besides gc?

No, not really. But because of the MTF's, a climber / GC-contendor will most likely also win the points and KOTM-jersey, so it's not impossible that a good Gesink or Contador gets 3 jerseys.

The 2nd stage is a 244km long stay from Alba to Parma, with one 4rd category climb in it, the Tabiano Castello. Prediction: mass sprint!
In dreadful weather, a group of 10 riders are up front and get a maximum lead of 9 minutes. In it are: Tosatto (Saxobank), Guarneri & Finetto (Liquigas), Nizzolo (Leopard), Kohler (BMC), Ongarato (Vacansoleil), Bandiera (Quick Step), Gasparotto (Astana), Miyazawa (Farnese Vini) and surprisingly Ventoso (Movistar).
Tosatto wins the Intermediate sprint, 48km from the finish. Guarnieri gets 2nd and Nizzolo 3rd. The lead is cut back to 2'43.
The riders in the BOTD know that they don't stand a chance, so they fight for the prize they can win today: the KOTM-jersey. While climbing the Tabiano Castello, the group splits. Liquigas Mauro Finetto wins the sprint and creates a gap with Gasparotto and Tosatto. WIth 33km to go, the peloton is only 1'41 back.
12km from Parma, Tosatto tries an ultimate attack, but he gets caught a few km later, and it will be a mass sprint, as predicted.
Alessandro Petacchi starts the sprint with 2.5km to go. This must be way too early! Tyler Farrar (Garmin) is in his wheel, followed by Matthew Goss (HTC) and Theo Bos.
Yes it is. A wrong tactic move by Ale Jet, who will fall back to 14th place at the line. Matthew Goss is in the lead now. With 1km to go, the Italians Roberto Ferrari (Androni) and Andrea Guardini (Farnese Vini come aside him. Bos and Farrar wait for their jump, while Fernández and Galimzyanov come from behind.
With 500metres to go it looks like Goss will win this first sprint. But then comes Tyler Farrar with his jump. Goss believes he's gonna win, and wants to celebrate, but the American passes him in the last few inches! What an epic sprint by Farrar, unbelievable! Roberto Ferrari takes a great third place. Theo Bos has to settle with the 4th place, just in front of Koldo Fernández.
When everyone crosses the finish, it becomes clear that there has been a crash in the streets of Parma with about 5km to go. Because of it, 2 riders have to abandon: Jussi Veikkanen (Omega Pharma) and Tejay van Garderen (HTC), both with unknown fractures. But also some riders lose a lot of time and can put a cross through their GC-ambitions: Marzio Bruseghin (Movistar) and especially Daniel Martin (Garmin) loose 5'41!

Word from the DS: Not much to say. Farrar proofed he's the best sprinter in this Giro. Theo Bos did really great with the 4th place, hopefully he can improve himself in the following stages, although winning will be difficult. But we succeeded in the most important goal: stay on the bike and don't lose time! Hopefully the weather will become better the next days.

The 3rd stage can provide some surprises. After starting in Reggio Emilia, the peloton will gradually climb to the Passo del Bocco (3rd category, 40km from the finish). After a long descent, there is the climb of the Madonna del Grazie. The summit is only 9km from the finishline, which will be reached after 173km in Rapallo.
Just like yesterday, a breakaway gets a lot of space from the peloton. Marco Corti from Geox wins the Intermediate sprint after 93km. 2nd is Martin Pedersen (Leopard) and 3rd Stijn Vandenbergh (Katusha). The other riders in the BOTD are Victor Reynes (Omega Pharma), Fabio Sabatn (Liquigas), John Murphy (BMC), Fumiyuki Beppu (Radioshack), Paolo de Negri (Farnese), Jonathan Bellis (Saxobank) and Andreas Stauff (Quick Step). The maximum lead is 8 minutes.
Jonathan Bellis is the first to reach the summit of the Passo del Bocco, with Pedersen in 2nd and Beppu in 3rd. WIth 40km to go, the lead is 4'00.
Oh my! Marzio Bruseghin has crashed in the descend.... Can he continue his Giro? Yes, he can, but will lose over 8 minutes today.
The breakaway leaves the seaside and starts the climb of the Madonna del Grazie (2.6km - 6.8). Vandenbergh, De Negri and Beppu have a 17 second gap to the rest of the group and 2'13 to the peloton.
Monster Energy - Ford is doing the pace in the peloton. Have we got a plan for the last climb??
The leading group comes together at the summit. De Negri gets the most points, in front of Vandenbergh and Pedersen. 9km to go and the lead is still 1'33. It looks like they will stay up front!
With 500metres of climbing to go for the peloton, Jelle Vanendert attacks, with the purpose of Gesink to follow him. But unfortunately, Gesink is blocked by his teammates (stupid PCM bug ), and sees Igor Antón and Yaroslav Popovych do what he wants to do (sorry, no screens of it). Also no screens of José Rujano crashing in the descend, loosing 3'13 in this stage. Vanendert, Antón and Popovych close the gap with the leading group, so we have 13 riders up frot with 5km to go.
Vanendert choses the wheel of the best sprinter in the group, Omega Pharma's Reynes. But Reynes hasn't got the legs, so he has to make up a lot. It's a drag to the line between Marco Corti and Igor Antón. The Spanish rider beats the Geox-rider and gets a surprise win! Jelle Vanendert does very well, and takes the 3rd place.
A small group broke away from the peloton, in it Robert Gesink, Alberto Contador, Jurgen van den Broeck, Marco Pinotti, Prem Niemiec and Yuri Trofimov.
Theo Bos wins the sprint of the peloton and gets 20th place. Strangely, the jury decides to give them the same time (56 seconds back) as the 6 breakaways!
What a great win by Antón, he dit exactly what we had in mind for Gesink.

Word from the DS: One part of the tactic worked, Vanendert created a gap and stayed away. But Gesink should have followed him. I don't wanna blame the game, but feel like doing it. So instead of gaining time, Gesink has lost 1'16 to Antón...

Nice results with Vanendert. The same bug happens to me where he can't get around his teammates and its really annoying

Stage 4, 216 km from Quatro dei Mille to Livorno, with the climb of the Passo del Bracco early in the stage and after a long flat part the Castellaccio (3.3km - 5.1%) with the summit 10km before the finish. Time for another attack?
Another breakaway and again Mauro Finetto (Liquigas) in it. He wins the KOTM-sprint of the Passo del Bracco and secures himself of wearing the green jersey. He is accompanied by Ongarato (Vacansoleil), Klostergaard (Saxobank) and Mortensen (Leopard). The maximum lead gets 10 minutes.
Finetto also wins the Intermediate sprint (Mortensen in 2nd, Ongarato in 3rd). The lead has shrunken to 5'35.
The BOTD gets caught in the ascend of the Castellaccio. Then we see an attack by Jelle Vanendert, followed by Robert Gesink. They cross the KOTM-sprint as 1 and 2. Yuri Trofimov tries to go along with them, but falls back.
After the descent, the 2 Monster Energy - Ford riders get a maximum lead of 32 seconds with just 5km to go.
Nicholas Roche (AG2R La Mondiale) jumps from the peloton and enjoys the 2 up front. WIth 2 km to go, the lead is only 20 seconds. Garmin - Cervélo and Lampre - ISD work hard to get them back!
1km to go and we no that we won't make it. Here are the sprinters! Tyler Farrar and Alessandro Petacchi come with high speed from behind to take the stage win.
The old beets the young. Ale Jet shows that he has learned from his mistake in Parma and waits long with his jump. When Farrar slows down, he outsprints him and takes his 2nd win of the year (1st was the 3rd stage in the Tirreno). Gesink manages to get 1oth, Vanendert 11th.
But we see a peloton that crosse the finish in pieces and it looks like there are some riders who have lost time! Oh yes, at 1'18 come Igor Antón, Alberto Contador and Jurgen van den Broeck. Janez Brajkovic loses 2'54 and Ivan Basso even 4'50! What first turned out in a little disappointment, now brings a smile upon our faces!

Word from the DS: We never dreamt of gaining 1'18 or more on our most important opponents in the GC. We tried to get the stage win and mabe win some time, but this is a great result. Looking forward with confidence to the next stage with the Strade Bianche!

Stage 5 from Piombino to Orvieto (189km) brings the peloton through the beautiful Tuscany with about 20km of gravel roads, the Strade Bianchi. There are 2 categorized climbs (the Saraglio, 5.3km - 4.4% and the Croce di Fighine 2.3km - 7.3%) and the last 2km are uphill, with a maximum gradient of 15%, to the old city of Orvieto in the region Umbria.
10 man break away, and strangely there are 4 sprinters among them. Borut Bozic (Vacansoleil) wins the Intermediate sprint, in front of Ben Swift (Sky) and Matteo Tosatto (Saxo). The other 7 are Michel Kreder (Garmin), Sven Vandousselaere (Omega), Stefan Denifl & Davide Vigano (Leopard), Gert Steegmans (Quick Step), Mauro Santambrogio (BMC) and Tiziano Dall'Antonia (Liquigas). The gap is 7'45.
The 10 remain up front a few km later at the first KOTM sprint (Saraglio). Dall'Antonia wins it, in front of Santambrogio and Tosatto.
The second climb of the day, the Croce di Fighine, brings the riders up on the caracteristic Tuscan white gravel roads, the Strade Bianchi. Santambrogio wins the sprint, Dall'Antonia 2nd and Kreder 3rd.
The peloton, led by Rob Ruijgh is 3'50 behind.
20km to go, and the lead is 3'19. Steegmans and Vigano have been dropped.
5km to go, and the lead is still 2'24. It looks like they're gonna make it!
With 2.5km to go, the climb to the historic centre of Orvieto starts. The lead decreases rapidly now, 1'35 left.
But it's easy to lose a lot of time on this short and steep hill!
When the steepest part is done, with 1km left. Santambrogio has created a small gap to Dall'Antonia. In the back, Gesink and Vanendert come with high speed. They ride away from the peloton, but will it be enough for the stage win?
Gesink is in 3rd with 400m to go. He won't win this stage, but for sure gain some time!
Mauro Santambrogio wins this tough stage, a great result by the Italian! Dall'Antonia finishes 14 seconds behind with Gesink and Vanendert in the same time as number 3 and 4. Nicholas Roche and leader Yaroslav Popovych finish at 33 seconds, a big group with Contador, Antón and Vandenbrouck at 52 seconds. Basso can forget another Giro-win, he loses 5'11!
