Seriously! Langeveld beating Kruopis. It seems like they've switched places Pfft Langeveld 3rd and Kruopis outside the Top 10 Pfft

Really weird sprint, in obvious trains until very late, sprinters seemed very tired. Disaster for my team again though Sad

The riders will cross a very undulating circuit 3 times before heading on to a flat finish. We should be looking for a mass sprint, as the hills don't seem hard enough to displace the sprinters.

Favourites

Banana Banana Banana

John Degenkolb: As well as being a fantastic sprinter in his own right, the German is also quite good over hills, and should be in the best condition for the finish.

Banana Banana

Nacer Bouhanni & Arnaud Demare: The young pair from FDJ are great sprinters alone, but put together, you have a potential race winning team. The question is, who will lead? Most likely Demare, as Bouhanni's ability (or lack thereof) on hills will probably serve to make him to tired for a final sprint, but still in good enough condition for a leadout.

Banana

Gerald Ciolek: Another sprinter, like Degenkolb, who is good on hills, but can Ciolek deliver with almost no support.

Heinrich Haussler: The Aussie is not one to be let down easy. He has very strong sprinting capabilities, but may just be looking for a Top 3 here.

Willem Brouwer: The Belkin boy is also decent over hills, but can he deliver against a quality sprinting field?

Should be a good race, pressure on Degenkolb to perform, should get our countered goal anyway

Cycleman123
Pretty easy goal imo, but can you achieve it? Pfft You're about to find out.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0002_zpsae03abf0.jpg
The first attack comes from Giordani (VIN). He is soon followed by Bertazzo (AND) and Le Montagner (BSE).

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0003_zps314ed2d9.jpg
Before a real break can form, we have a split! 49 riders are already behind after just 17km.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0004_zpsb2542384.jpg
The first attackers get into the break, as well as Van de Walle (LTB), Beyer (CSS), Hardy (COF), Aregger (IAM), Huguet (ARG) and Declerq (TSV). So, Argos and IAM take the pressure off themselves to chase. How will this effect things later on?

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0005_zps2bd50936.jpg
The first group to be dropped get back with 175km to go, but just 5km later, 37 are behind. They again get back within 5 kilometres.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0006_zpse35d357a.jpg
This split is a game changer! With 57km to go, 75 riders have been dropped, including a few favourites - Brouwer (BEL), Van Hummel and Markus (VCD).

They do get back withing 5km (again Rolling Eyes ) but immediately 52 fall back again - however this time with no favourites.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0007_zpsf1ac0bd2.jpg
45km: With the break still ahead, Muravyev (AST) goes on the attack.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0008_zps12c362f7.jpg
On the last hill, most of the break gets caught. Hardy and Beyer are still ahead and Wynants (BEL) attacks.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0009_zps85b8d1d8.jpg
20km: Bouhanni is dropped! Ladagnous comes back to help, but it looks like Demare is alone. The group behind has 22 in in, and with the previous dropped group still behind, there are only 37 left in the so called peloton.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0010_zpsd7b5d96f.jpg
15km: Only 13 riders are left in the lead group, including Degenkolb, Haussler and Brouwer. Hardy is somehow still ahead, and the group of 13 isn't gaining ground.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0011_zps1be93749.jpg
13km: Off goes Iglinskiy. He passes the Frenchman and keeps going at a blistering pace.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0012_zps757b64bb.jpg
Hardy has stayed at about 100m from the sprinters' group for about 5km now. With 5 to go he is still ahead, but is caught with 3km left. Iglinskiy still leads, by 1'40 in fact! Could this be a shock win?

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0013_zps8d1794a1.jpg
Haussler is the only one with a leadout. The other 2 sprinters are in his wheel.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0014_zps30ef1cbe.jpg
But the lack of riders to relay pays off! Astana have a shock win by more than 2 minutes.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0015_zpsec7457a7.jpg
Meanwhile, the sprint is starting behind. Haussler is the first to go, but the other two are faster than him.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0016_zps2d3fb44d.jpg
Degenkolb gets second while Brouwer claims 3rd by an inch.

What a great race! Definitely not what was expected!

Volta a Catalunya - Stage 3

www.voltacatalunya.cat/img/arquitectura/logo.png

www.grassyknolltv.com/2013/volta-a-catalunya/profile-03.jpg

Start

Stage 3 sees the riders face the first MTF of the stage race, it will provide a shake in the GC and the potential winner will emerge.

There were lots of attacks from the start but the peloton was determined to reduce the size of the breakaway. Only Florencio (KAT) succeeds and rides off solo.

Sprint

Florencio strolls through the sprint point and takes 3 points and 3 seconds off his GC. he has a minute lead over the peloton.

A group of 3 including Kiendys (CCC), Hansen (LTB) and Kessiakoff (AST) make it to the sprint point with Kiendys taking seconding and Kessiakoff third but they are caught straight after.

Cat.1 KoM1

i39.tinypic.com/2qa92bm.png

Florencio still solo is first over the climb with 3'13" over the peloton.

i44.tinypic.com/200spzm.png

Yesterdays faces Ahlstrand of Argos-Shimano and Lindeman (VCD) jump out the pack and cross the line second and third. They have a 34" gap to the peloton.

105km

i43.tinypic.com/x0wuj6.png

Weening (OGE) attacks out the peloton and joins Ahlstrand and Lindeman.

97km

Weening, Lindeman and Ahlstrand have a 1 minute lead over the peloton while lone wolf Florencio has 3 minutes.

43k

The three have Florencio insign but can't catch it as he is determined not to slow down for the group. He has 2'06" on the peloton.

Cat.1 KoM2

i44.tinypic.com/6yzde8.png

With the 3 in sight, attacks by big favourites are being launched at the bottom of the slope. This one includes Costa (MOV), Dan Martin (GAR), Nerz (BMC) and Kessiakoff (AST).

Lindeman and Ahlstrand are reeled in by the peloton while Weening from the group of three and Nocetini(AG2R) surpass Florencio.

i39.tinypic.com/mljm9w.png

Nieve(EUS) makes his way to the front, joins Nocetini and Weening and wins the KoM.

26km

i44.tinypic.com/2cxan3m.png

A group of 17 form who catch the 3 in front, Kiryienka works on the front for Sky with Porte tucked in behind, they are then caught by the group behind forming a peloton of 66 with all the favourites in the pack.

18km

It's a sky train and definitely not a sunday bus replacement service, Knees and Kiryienka keep the place high. Poels (VCD) launches an attack but it only lasts 2km.

10km

i41.tinypic.com/2044uf.png

Under the banner, the Sky train still in force reeling back attacks from Nerz, Martin and Costa individual straight away. They have their second Belorussian up front to help, Suitsou.

6.5km

i41.tinypic.com/2ltiiwp.png

The machine that is Kiryienka has worked solo up hill since 10km to go, Porte is in behind and Contador (SAX) is sitting pretty on his wheel with Ryder Hesjedal (GAR). We start to enter the steeper section all the way up to the finish now, the intensity heats up.

i40.tinypic.com/2itj1pe.png

A big group still makes its way up the mountain.

5km
i40.tinypic.com/k0kmrd.png

Under the 5km to go banner, Kiryienka has finished his pull and Porte takes it up temporarily, this could be playing into Alberto's hands as he is right behind him.

3km
i43.tinypic.com/1zzood5.png

Kiryienka is back on the front with Froome slotted in behind and we see the same order from earlier. We looking at the front of peloton to see who is still in contention. All 3 of the Garmin boys are here, Intxasuti is there for Movister. Sami Sanchez is still going strong with support from Anton. Kangert (AST) is being supported by Aru. Scarponi (LAM), Moreno (KAT), Pozzovivo (AGR) and Monfort (RLT) are all there.

2km

i44.tinypic.com/2ykcl6o.png

Richie Porte goes and gets himself a bike length while Contador and Hesjedal try to react. it's going to be a long sprint if they can make it.

1km

i41.tinypic.com/2ms0s4n.png

He has got himself a big now, he has to try and keep going if he is to hold off Contador, Hesjadel and Sanchez.

500m

i42.tinypic.com/2wg7wqv.png

And they are coming fast, Porte slows down. It's going to be a very tight finish, who will have the fastest finish?

200m

i42.tinypic.com/23iunw5.png

Porte doesn't need to have the fastest finish because he finds something inside himself and kicks again, it is going to finish before Contador and Hesjadal can get there. Sami Sanchez and Intxausti are just behind.

Finish

i44.tinypic.com/xelumx.png

Porte crosses the line first, Contador and Hesjadal finish 2nd and 3rd and manage to cross before the time gap, Sanchez and Intxausti finishes closely behind, great riding from all 5 today.

Kangert, Scarponi and Talansky finish close behind with Monfort and Pozzovivo to round out top 10. Jordan Lewis (BMC) rides in a 22 man group who will get the same time.

Jesleyh

But @Ollfardh, wtf?
You never told me Brouwer would race Catalunya, I thought he'd have an easy first season part(raceday wise)?
Not that I'd have disagreed, but it would have been nice to know Wink
