It's really not that bad outside Europe...
4 european finalists each time.
Lol, funny finals those, with 4 european teams + the winner. Too bad I never saw those |

Today's positive thinking: At least we were in the World Cup - in contrary to Norway and Sweden
Also, it should now be clear to everyone that Thomas Sørensen cannot be trusted in important matches.
More importantly, the "fans" at the City Hall Square were a disgrace. Kids now a days |

We can´t be in every tournemant, we where in 00,02,04,06,08 we needed to save some money this time. But 2012 and 2014 we are back.

Portugal vs Brazil sounds great. As for Brazil, Robinho'll sit on the bench and Kaka' wont play due to an unfair red card. Concerning Portugal, Duda and Danny come on for Simao and Mendes. Who will take the lead of the group? I'd say Brazil. However, it'll be a big deal as Brazil miss Kaka' and Robinho

And that's another African team out. Only Ghana left.
Spain vs Chile should be interesting tonight.

As expected, Portugal - Brazil was quite boring.
Spain - Chile is the match to look forward to |

i don't know why everyone expected african teams to do well. if you held the tournament in Wales you wouldn't expect wales to suddenly become world beaters.
in the whole history of the world cup only about 4 teams have ever made it passed the group stage. |

I didn't say I expected them to do better. I just hoped they would. |

i know, i didn't say you did say that.
but the general thinking has been that the african teams will do well.
in reality even Ghana were lucky to go through. they would have lost to australia if Kewell hadn't been sent off. |

i think it will.
unlike the brazil-portugal game both sides need the win, well chile don't but they won't want to just defend against spain for 90 mins. the loser is effectively out so it is the start of the knockout stage for spain and chile already.

Well done of Spain. The only thing I can hope for now is that Switzerland don't win.
And what a shame of a referee. He gives card for almost every tackle, he also gives cards for no tackles at all...

Also, someone should call Bollywood, they could use Torres in one of their movies. |

South Africa is the first home country to not qualify for the second round. So far, except for World Cup in 2002, the tournament was always won by a team from that continent, and almost half of the times by the home country.
Clearly home court advantage is real.
Plus those 4 teams you mentioned were all in recent history. African football is steadily improving, despite disappointing results this tournament. They've been increasingly succesfull at the Olympics too btw. |

Home court advantage does help, but conditions in South Africa would arguebly support the South American teams more than the African teams.
Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon are all West African sides with much hotter climates and fairly different culturely than South Africa. Algeria are completely different, and would probably be better suited to a tournament held in Spain or Italy.
The African nations themselves seem to be really stuggling with organisation. They seem to have the talent. Nigeria and Ivory Coast changed managers this year, Cameroon also only fairly recently. It's no coincidence that the South Africa and Ghana performed okay - they have had longer serving managers so better honed tactics.
Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Algeria suffered from overcautious tactics in their opening games. That's what disappoints the most the feeling that they did not give it a go.

If Ivory Coast actually tried, they would've won against Portugal. I'm convinced of that.
Portugal, well, sorry, but wth? Nothing like the finalist of EC 2004. And Ronaldo is more an annoyance than a star at the moment |
