Some people say that today Le Tour really starts. Oh well, these 8 previous stages and over 1000 kilometres are really nothing.... Today is the first stage in the Pyrenées, with the ascend of 2 legendary cols, the Peyresourde and the Aspin. After the last summit, a 26 kilometre dsecends awaits to the finish in Bagnères-de-Bigorre.

img20.imageshack.us/img20/4969/bagneres.jpg

140km to go
With 2 tough ascend waiting, the peloton takes it pretty slowly in the beginning of the race. As expected, a breakaway is formed, with some names we have seen before: yesterday's winner Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), Lars Ytting Bak (Lotto), Alan Davis (Qantas), Aleksandr Dyachenko (Astana), Dimitry Kozontchuk (Nespresso), Julien Loubet (AG2R), Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil), Iban Mayoz (Euskaltel) and Jonathan Monsalve (Androni).
With 140km to go in this stage, the riders can see the Pyrenées at the horizon, luckily for them the weather is great today!

71km to go
After some minor climbs, the BOTD has finally arrived at the foot of the Col de Peyresourde (13.2km at 7.1%). They have a gap of 3'55 to Chris Anker Sorensen and 8'01 to the peloton.
img815.imageshack.us/img815/9925/271km.jpg

56km to go
The BOTD breaks into a few smaller groups, mostly because of Dyachenko. The Kazach was doing the pace and arrives as first at the summit. Only Monsalve, Loubet and Mayoz can follow him. Sorensen follows at 2'16 and the peloton at 7'06.
img853.imageshack.us/img853/8354/356km.jpg

36km to go
The peloton (32 riders with all the big names in it) have started the ascend of the Col d'Aspin (1.8km at 6.5%) 4'24 behind the 4 leaders. Already after 2 kilometres, GC's number 2 Vincenzo Nibali attacks. Nobody reacts immediately, Gesink decides to continue in his own pace (and is also placed pretty badly behind).
img221.imageshack.us/img221/483/436km.jpg

29km to go
It takes Nibali 7 kilometres to close the 4-minute-gap to leader Dyachenko. But he couldn't create a big gap. A group with Evans, Menchov, Hesjedal, Sánchez, Sorensen, Kern, Schleck, Mayoz, Van den Broeck and Monsalve follows at '12, and a group with Wiggins and Gesink at '40. But our team leader closes the gap to the group of favourites shortly after.
img4.imageshack.us/img4/9411/529km.jpg

26km to go
Nibali also gets caught, so a group of 12 riders arrives at the summit of the Aspin together. Hesjedal wins the sprint for the KOTM-points. GC-leader Tony Martin follows at 2'30, so he'll loose the GC-lead today.
img853.imageshack.us/img853/3633/626km.jpg

20km to go
Jurgen Van den Broeck attacks in the descend and creates a gap of about 30 seconds. Meanwhile, a group consisting of Frank, Vinokourov, Roche and Leipheimer has closed the gap to this leading group in the descend.
img822.imageshack.us/img822/9991/720km.jpg

2km to go
Van den Broeck has no chance, especially because of the hard work by Menchov and Nibali. Menchov leads the group with 2km to go and starts the sprint. He's followed by Nibali and Gesink.
img11.imageshack.us/img11/13/82km.jpg

700m to go
Gesink tries to jump out of the wheel of Nibali, but isn't a good sprinter. The danger comes from behind, as Evans and Hesjedal are about to pass him.
img811.imageshack.us/img811/3956/9700m.jpg

Finish
Cadel Evans wins the sprint and takes his first season win. Hesjedal gets second, Nibali third, Sánchez fourth and Gesink 5th. This means that Nibali will be the new GC-leader.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/7421/10finish.jpg

Martin
Tony Martin finishes in a group with Joaquím Rodríguez, Ivan Basso and Peter Velits, 1'48 behind. He looses his maillot jaune today.

Today's winner

Word from the DS
All is pretty even in the GC, and to be honest, we're happy that Nibali leads the GC. This means that his team will have to do the work in the next stage, with the Tourmalet and the Hautacam. We for sure know that Gesink has to be a little more attentful there, not to get boxed in.

It's the first rest day, and we can call already a few positives and negatives:

Positives
- Tyler Farrar: the best sprinter so far winning all 3 mass sprints.
- 3 wins for a breakaway.
- The small gaps in the GC, 4 riders within '16 and 6 within a minute.

Negatives
- Some really bad GC-contenders, who all must have their reasons, eg Kreuziger and Basso.
- Our sprints (but with the advice from Cunego59, it must go better).

After a day's of rest, the peloton continues it's journey through France, with the 2nd Pyrenées-stage. The 153 kilometres between Pau and Lourdes - Hautacam are the toughest, with the ascending of the Col du Tourmalet (17.7km at 7.3%) and a mountain top finish at the Hautacam (14.4km at 7.4%).
img710.imageshack.us/img710/6262/stage10.jpg
img840.imageshack.us/img840/6733/hautacam.jpg

78km to go
The first 78 flat kilometres are pretty boring. The reason: Radio Shack and Monster Energy. We both want a collective peloton that can start the ascend of the Tourmalet, making the chance pretty small that riders fall outside the time limit.
img803.imageshack.us/img803/7219/178km.jpg

67km to go
But as soon as the road starts to ascend, the first 3 riders attack. Jurgen Van den Broeck, who has a very disappointing Tour so far, is the initiator and he gets followed by Peter Velits (Omega Pharma) and Chris Anker Sorensen (Saxo Bank). As they are no real threat for the GC, they are allowed to go solo.
img818.imageshack.us/img818/6208/267km.jpg

50km to go
Van den Broeck and Velits are the best climbers of the 3, and they drop their Danish companian a few kilometres before the summit. Velits takes the points at an altitude of 2115m. Sorensen follows at 1'36, and a first chasing group, with Gesink, Vanendert, Nibali, Klöden and Menchov at 7'49. A 2nd group with the other GC-contenders follows at 8'34. Only GC's number 5 Tony Martin is further down the road, he follows at 9'30.
img848.imageshack.us/img848/9704/350km.jpg

30km to go
The first two chasing groups emerge after the descend of the Tourmalet. 2 riders from the Top 10 aren't present, namely Tony Martin and Pierre Rolland (both Omega Pharma). This is still 7'30 behind the 2 leaders.
img713.imageshack.us/img713/9116/430km.jpg

14km to go
Van den Broeck and Velits have started the final ascend of the day, the Hautacam. With a gap of 6'48 to the peloton, they know that the will fight for the stage win.
img84.imageshack.us/img84/3467/514km.jpg

5km to go
5 kilometres before the summit, the chasing group is still pretty big. 5 minutes behind the leading duo, 12 riders are about to catch Sorensen: Kern (GC 9), Sánchez (8), Gesink (2), Schleck (6), Menchov (3), Evans (7), Hesjedal (12), De Weert (27), Nibali (1), Wiggins (4), Vanendert (17) and Klöden (11).
img831.imageshack.us/img831/5328/65km.jpg

4km to go
None of the GC-favourites is willing to attack, all are looking at each other. So getting a bit frustrated, Gesink decides that he is the one who has to shake things up, and attacks with 4km to go. And of course, everybody is reacting...
img444.imageshack.us/img444/5775/74km.jpg

Finish
Back to the front. Van den Broeck manages to drop Velits in th elast 2 kilometres, and celebrates a great win, making up for his disappointing first 9 stages. Velits finishes in 2nd at '25 and the waiting starts for the third place.
img440.imageshack.us/img440/8425/8finish.jpg

3rd place
Menchov and Evans are the first ones to close the gap to Gesink. When the sprint started, the Dutchie was in the wheel of Menchov but simply couldn't follow. And out of nowhere, Nibali passed everybody, finishing behind Evans as the number four, at 4'41. Gesink looses '16 to the 3, just as Schleck and Sánchez. Wiggins looses one more minute.
4 riders finish outside the time limit: JJ Haedo & M. Kragh (Saxo), A. Ongarato (Vacasoleil) and F. Robert (Lotto).

Word from the DS
Looking at the GC, it was obvious today that attacking didn't pay off. It was better to ride like a coward and profit from others.... (yes, I'm a bit frustrated Rolling Eyes ). One good thing: it's up to Radio Shack and Sony Ericsson to do the work.

You should try to launch your attack with 2km to go. Most likely, you are able to keep attacking untill the last km, when you start sprinting.

Guess who's back? Smile
Lets see how many friens are still around...

You can still recover the time loss today. It's still early in the race. Wink

We leave the Pyrenées already in stage 11. After the start in Lannemezan, the riders face only one serious climb, the Col de Portel (12.3km at 6.9%). After the summit awaits a 51 kilometre descend to Foix. Strangely, this is considered a mountain stage.
img840.imageshack.us/img840/3641/stage11g.jpg
img821.imageshack.us/img821/9525/foix.jpg

107km to go
As we belive a breakaway can be lucky today, we decide we want to be in it. Thomas Dekker makes it in the BOTD, that is 14 riders big. Among them are Thor Hushovd, Ángel Vicioso, Enrico Gasparotto and Alan Davis. They have to work very hard to get a gap of over 1'30, but when it gets that big, the peloton drops the pace.
img715.imageshack.us/img715/791/1107km.jpg

51km to go
Because there are too many fast sprinters in the BOT (Davis, LS Haedo, Turgot, Arashiro etc), Dekker raises the pace in the ascend of the Col de Portel. Because of it, the group gets shrinked to a 8-man group: Dekker, Luca Solari & Ángel Vicioso (Androni), Pasamontes (Movistar), Arashiro (Europcar), Gasparotto (Lampre), Izagirre (Euskaltel) and Hushovd (BMC).
The other 6 former riders of the BOTD aren't able to return in the group. The peloton follows at 5'19.
img195.imageshack.us/img195/7821/251km.jpg

27km to go
A lot of action in the descend. First there was a breakaway by the GC's 6-8 Bradley Wiggins, Samuel Sánchez and Christophe Kern. That lasted more than 10 kilometres and when they got caught, GC-leader Vincenzo Nibali attacked. He gets immediately followed by Ryder Hesjedal and Matthias Frank.
Because of these attacks and the high pace, the gap to the leading group has decreased to 2'46.
img850.imageshack.us/img850/5972/327km.jpg

24km to go
As the cooperation in the leading group gets worse and worse, Dekker decides to attack at the Col de Bouich, a small 3rd category climb with the summit 24km before Foix. Izagirre reacts and closes the gap, but as happens often in cycling, suddenly the others in the BOTD start to cooperate again and they catch the 2.
Meanwhile, a lot of action behind. Nibali follows at 2'00 at the summit and is joined by a lot more riders, as Cadel Evans and Denis Menchov. A group with our riders, including Gesink, and Sánchez and Wiggins follows at 2'28.
img580.imageshack.us/img580/5800/424km.jpg

11km to go
The next attack in the leading group. Androni uses their majority (only team with 2 riders) in it, and Luca Solari attacks. Dekker looks at the others if they want to do the chase, but "strangely" they don't. So, already '30 behind, he counterattacks and again only Izagirre reacts.
Behind them, it's pretty chaotic. A group with Kern, Hesjedal, Nibali, Van den Broeck and Vinokourov follows at '55, Wiggins and Evans at 1'24 and the group Gesink, with Vanendert, Ruijgh & Poels working hard for him at 1'47.
img72.imageshack.us/img72/2387/511km.jpg

4km to go
Dekker has closed the gap to Solari and is preparing for the final sprint. Izagirre follows at '16, the other 5 at '32 and the chasing peloton at '52.
Yes, all the smaller groups behind have merged again, so all the GC-contenders, except the Omega Pharma-riders Leipheimer, Velits, Martin and Rolland, are together again.
img525.imageshack.us/img525/2460/64km.jpg

1km to go
When Dekker wants to start the sprint, with 1 km to go, suddenly riders are all over the place. Especially Nibali, that guy that had a 20km attack just before......
Nibali is flying past everyone and is gonna take the win.
img220.imageshack.us/img220/3001/71kmd.jpg

Finish
It's a very easy sprint win for the Italian GC-leader, his first in this Tour and the 8th of the season. Kevin De Weert makes it a Radio Shack double, followed by Evans and Dekker. Gesink finishes as 7th.

Word from the DS
This feels like a missed opportunity. I can tell you that Thomas Dekker is very devestated, as he thought he had a great change to get a stage win.
And another thing: how the heck can riders (Nibali this time) attack, give it all, and when they get caught, easily win the spint for the win....

The riders head to the Mediterranean Sea in stage 12. 160 kilometres between Lavelanet and Narbonne. Mass sprint again?
img841.imageshack.us/img841/2450/stage12.jpg
img11.imageshack.us/img11/8198/narbonne.jpg

27km to go
After several numerous attempts to form a breakaway, finally after about 100 kilometres into the stage, 4 riders succeed. With 27km to go, at the Intermediate sprint, Angelo Furlan (Androni), Alex Rasmussen (Nespresso), Thor Hushovd (BMC, 2nd day in a row) and Lars Ytting Bak (Lotto) have a gap of 3'46 to the peloton.
Strangely, none of the sprinter teams are willing to lead the chase, so with the ambition to bring our sprinters to a good position, we'll chase them.
img864.imageshack.us/img864/6486/127km.jpg

13km to go
Bak has taken a look around and realizes he is the only non-sprinter in the BOTD. So he has one shot a stage win: an attack. The big Dane attacks with 13km to go and only Furlan tries, unsuccesfullt, to follow him. The peloton is still 2'32 behind.
img829.imageshack.us/img829/3598/213km.jpg

5km to go
The 3 chasers can't close the gap to Bak and are '39 behind with 5km to go. The peloton is 2'07 behind.
img845.imageshack.us/img845/8987/35km.jpg

Finish
And Lars Ytting Bak makes it a very, very succesful Tour de France for the Lotto - Belisol team, with their 3rd stage win already. The peloton has caught the other 3, and finishes at '27. Tyler Farra, who else? wins the sprint, just beating Romain Feilu and André Greipel.
And our riders? Kittel finishes in 22nd (gets outsprinted by riders as Fränk Schleck, Roman Kreuziger...), after all the energy bars were getting empty faster than the bank account of Greece....
ALmost all the riders finish inside the peloton. One rider leaves the Tour inside an ambulance: John Gadret, who had a pretty disappointing Tour so far, crashes in the last 15km and has a fracture kneecap.

As we're looking forward to the Alps, we continue with the next stage pretty fast. 173 almost flat kilometres from Narbonne to Nimes. One danger is the seawind, can it affect the peloton and cause echelons?
img404.imageshack.us/img404/3931/stage13x.jpg
img825.imageshack.us/img825/489/nimes.jpg

71km to go
Again, we see a big BOTD. This time, there are 13 riders in it, and again, the sprinter teams don't care about chasing them....
In it are: Greg Van Avermaet (BMC, again), Daniele Bennati (Euskaltel), Roberto Ferrari (Androni), Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky), Andriy Grivko (Astana), Sebastian Langeveld (Qantas), Francisco José Pacheco (Movistar), Daniele Ratto (Nespresso), Staf Scheirlinckx (Lotto), Sébastien Turgot (Europcar), Florian Vachon (AG2R, again), Brian Vandborg (Saxo Bank) and Johan Vansummeren (Garmin).
img9.imageshack.us/img9/4296/171km.jpg

5km to go
The peloton knows it's beaten (oh my, what a surprise...) as it is 1'24 behind with 5km to go.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/2158/25km.jpg

Finish
The sprint for the win is full of suspense. It looks like Sebastian Langeveld is going to win it, but he gets passed by French Sébastien Turgot, with just a few centimetres differences.... Great win for the French, again a wildcard team wins (Gallopin in stage 1 for Cofidis).
The peloton finishes '42 behind, and of course Farra wins this sprint.
But to our surprise, there were some big gaps in the peloton, with a few riders of the GC-top 20 losing 3 minutes to the peloton: Fränk Schleck, Andreas Klöden and Joaquím Rodríguez are the ones! One rider has to abandon, Bart De Clerq (Lotto) crashes and breaks a hip.

In stage 14, the riders can smell the Alps. After the start in Nimes (alt. 46m), the road keeps ascending with a very low gradient, and after 187km, the finish awaits in Digne-les-Bains (alt. 599m). The question is if the sprinters can survive the Col de l'Orme, with the summit 7km before the finish.
img521.imageshack.us/img521/6371/stage14.jpg
img138.imageshack.us/img138/6563/dignelesbains.jpg

59km to go
There's one lonely attacker today. Nespresso's Alex Rasmussen was in the BOTD 2 days ago, now he tries it all alone. But he gets caught with 30km to go, and the peloton start the preparation for the Col de l'Orme.
img585.imageshack.us/img585/5980/159km.jpg

7km to go
The pace set at the Col de l'Orme is that high, that there are no attacks. Bradley Wiggins leads the peloton over the summit, followed by Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara. Our riders are positioned a little bit too far behind.
img32.imageshack.us/img32/5854/27kme.jpg

2km to go
Team Sky was in the lead, with Eisel leading out Cav. But 2 kilometres before the finish, they get passed by the Omega Pharma-express. Ciolek is leading out Farrar, followed by Haussler and Petacchi. It looks like the others, including our sprinters, have chosen the wrong wheel....
img37.imageshack.us/img37/2181/32km.jpg

600m to go
Ciolek still leads with 600 metres to go, when Petacchi launches his final jump. At this moment, Farrar does the same....
img339.imageshack.us/img339/443/4600m.jpg

Finish
And that's stage win number 4 for Tyler Farrar! Heinrich Haussler comes close in the end, but has to settle with the 2nd place, followed by Petacchi. And our riders? Sagan finishes in 10th, Kittel in 11th.
img7.imageshack.us/img7/4999/5finish.jpg

Crash
A big crash has happened 1 kilometre before the finish. Luckily all of them can finish the stage, but some big names loose 2'20, such as Klöden (again...), Frank and Rodríguez.

Word from the DS
Farrar is unbeatable.... Our spint went better than the last few stages, that's one positive thing.

Well, I'm at home today, day off, so I have too much free time today.... And I go on a short holiday the next week (to Barcelona Cool ), and I want to finish Le Tour before it....

Finally, the Alps. The first of 3 stages in the Alps brings the riders over the Col Agnel (alt. 2744m) to Italy and after a long descend and flat part, the final climb to Prato Nevoso (11.0km at 7.2%) awaits.
img855.imageshack.us/img855/4309/stage15.jpg
img696.imageshack.us/img696/2897/pratonevoso0001.jpg

125km to go
There are a few attacks in the long ascend towards the summit of the Col Agnel, but mainly because of the high pace set by our riders, no one escapes. That means that a group of about 30 riders cross the summit together, with Robert Gesink leading the group.
img843.imageshack.us/img843/3598/1125km.jpg

64km to go
After the long, never ending descend of the Col Agnel into Italy (now we have to call it the Agnello), the first attack out of the leading peloton occurs 64km before the finish. It's a pretty strong group with Joaquím Rodríguez, Ivan Basso, Levi Leipheimer, Roman Kreuziger and Cyril Gautier (yep, 4 of them are GC-contenders that have been disappointing all Tour long for different reasons).
img407.imageshack.us/img407/1223/264km.jpg

26km to go
At the Colle del Morte, with the summit 26 kilometres before the finish, the gap from the 5 leaders to the peloton is 1'30. Than GC's number 4 Cadel Evans goes in the counter attack! Why does he want to do it this early? Is he feeling that strong, or does he want to hide his weaknes? Time will tell...
img716.imageshack.us/img716/1606/326km.jpg

10km to go
Again, Radio Shack and Monster Energy work together to chase the 6 escapees and succeed in doing it. Jelle Vanendert is the first one to start the ascend, with Robert Gesink in his wheel.
img94.imageshack.us/img94/4954/410km.jpg

7km to go
Than Cadel attacks again! This time with 7km to go, and it's a fierce attack. The others decide to keep a high pace.
img825.imageshack.us/img825/9740/57km.jpg

4km to go
Evans has taken a lead of '28 to a group of 5. In it are Fränk Schleck, Vincenzo Nibali, Denis Menchov, surprising Ryder Hesjedal and Robert Gesink. But Gesink is struggling, a bad daily form (-4) has changed his plans, from attacking to hanging on.
img717.imageshack.us/img717/2460/64km.jpg

2km to go
Evans still leads by '12, when Denis Menchov tries to close the gap with an attack. Gesink, who has found some unkown energy source, and Nibali react.
img20.imageshack.us/img20/1134/72500m.jpg

1 km
Menchov looses speed, and than Nibali takes over. Gesink knows that he must hold on to that Italian wheel. But meanwhile, Evans has increased his gap to '24, entering the last kilometre.
img845.imageshack.us/img845/5063/81km.jpg

Finish
It's the 2nd stage win for Aussie Evans, who regains some valuable time for the GC. Nibbles finishes in 2nd at '23, in the same time as Gesink. Menchov looses another 11 seconds.
