Stage 3, from Saint-Malo to Nantes, over 206 kilometres, is probably the flattest stage in this Tour. So expect a mass sprint.
img703.imageshack.us/img703/328/stage3c.jpg
img834.imageshack.us/img834/3181/nanteso.jpg

141km to go
Today's BOTD is pretty big, compared to other days. Mondory (AG2R), Lemair (Cofidis), Dean (Qantas), Mortensen (Vacansoleil), Van Avermaet (BMC), Vansummeren (Garmin), Felline (Nespresso), Arashiro (Europcar), LS Haedo (Saxo), Rast (Radio Shack), Van Emden (Rabobank) and Scheirlinckx (Lotto) take a lead of maximum 8 minutes, but....
img41.imageshack.us/img41/8519/1141km.jpg

29km to go
... They won't make it. After Rodríguez' domestiques decreased the gap, Team Sky and Omega Pharma take over the pace of the peloton. 29km before Nantes, the gap is 1'16.
img839.imageshack.us/img839/6678/229km.jpg

10km to go
Julian Dean and Fabio Felline are the last 2 that get caught. In the peloton, we decided not to set up a train, but to let Sagan & Kittel take the wheel of Gerald Ciolek, trying to disturb the sprint preparation of yesterday's winner Tyler Farrar.
img69.imageshack.us/img69/4624/310km.jpg

3km to go
We don't know if it is the rain, or the length of the stage, but Sagan already fell behind getting without energy, and now Kittel is getting exhausted, still being in the wheel of Greipel. The peloton has broken in two pieces, and it looks like some GC-contenders will loose a lot of time today. We'll find out who they are, when the stage is done.
img9.imageshack.us/img9/4176/43km.jpg

1km to go
Under the flammer rouge, Kittel is done. He's without energy and won't even enter the top 10 today. It's going to be a drag race between Cavendish, Goss and Farrar.
img850.imageshack.us/img850/2002/51km.jpg

Finish
And just as yesterday, the American is the fastest. Tyler Farrar takes another win, beating Goss and Cavendish. Kittel finishes in ..... Not going to tell you, too ashamed Embarassed .
When we see the 2nd peloton crossing the line, 5 minutes behind the winner, we are surprised to see who's in it. Rigoberto Urán, Romain Sicard, Vasil Kiryiena, Roman Kreuziger and especially Jurgen Van den Broeck and Ivan Basso. Their podium hopes are gone!

Word from the DS
We really don't know what happened... Kittel was in great position behind Boonen and Ciolek, and his energy bar was getting empty that quick, I really can't believe it... Was it because of his relatively low stamina (72), I really don't know..........
Anyway, Le Tour starts tomorrow, with a 29km TT in Cholet.

Okay, now that wasn't the best stage, Kittel didn't have the legs for the other riders... And good to see Gesink avoiding any time losses, unlike Basso and Van den Broeck. Pfft

Pellizotti2
Great signing in Breschel. I'm sure that clever move will pay off.

Oh, and good luck in the rest of the Tour! Smile

@ FreitasPCM: Kittel had a daily form of 0, so he should have done better... I've playwd the ITT already, pretty big time gaps...

@ Pellizotti2: Yeah, I'm very happy with Breschel. And I'll try to make something of the tour.

Le Tour really starts for the GC-contenders with stage 4, a 29.4km flat ITT with start and finish in Cholet.

I really don't know if it is the glass of wine that I'm drinking, or some mysterious key-combination that I accidentaly press a few times, but again, my Google Chrome-browser disappears (no, not Alt-F4), loosing the text I've written.... So a summary of the first part.

After Vasil Kiryienka sets the best time at 39'27, a few GC-contenders (well, before they lost time in the first 3 stages) finish their ITT. Roman Kreuziger (33rd, + 2'22), Jurgen Van den Broeck (52nd, + 2'58) and Ivan Basso (61st, + 3'08). Then Chris Froome is '23 faster than Kiryienka, before grandpa Leipheimer is the first to be faster than 39 minutes, 38'46.

Leipies time is broken by Andreas Klöden, who secretly wants to do better than the 2nd places in his T-mobile time. New best time is 38'26.
img638.imageshack.us/img638/752/7klden.jpg

Next rider to start is Bradley Wiggins. Wiggo is even '6 faster than Klödie (stupid nicknames) and rides a 38'20.
img718.imageshack.us/img718/7889/8wiggins.jpg

One of the favourites to win this Tour is Denis Menchov. The Russian finishes in 10th time today, in 39'06.
img600.imageshack.us/img600/9299/9menchov.jpg

Cadel Evans is probably the biggest favourite to win this Tour, but the Aussie seems to be out of shape a bit. The 15th time today isn't that bad, but he should have done better than 39'30.
img193.imageshack.us/img193/9671/10evans.jpg

Vincenzo Nibali showed a great form in the Tour de Suisse, but already raced the Giro. He remains a GC-favourite after the ITT: 6th in 38'55.
img860.imageshack.us/img860/9417/11nibali.jpg

Sammy Sánchez is the Basque hope (and Spanish) to get at the podium, but his ITT is getting worde / less good every year. 21th time today, in 39'45.
img10.imageshack.us/img10/452/12snchez.jpg

It's no surprise that Fabian Cancellara, the current TT-world champ sets a new best time. The Swiss rider needs 38'12 for the route.
img580.imageshack.us/img580/2007/13cancellara.jpg

But it looks like that Tony Martin is the new best time-trialist in the world. He's faster in every split time (+11 in first split time, +21 in second) and even '32 at the finish. New best time in 37'40!
img809.imageshack.us/img809/8669/14martin.jpg

Robert Gesink rides a bad time trial. When he wants to win the Tour, he needs to do better than the 24th time, 39'52 behind Martin...
img713.imageshack.us/img713/4162/15gesink.jpg

Co-GC leader Tony Gallopin is a pretty weak time trialist. But being the penultimate starte brings out the best in him. And that his the 81st time, 3'40 behind Martin.
img821.imageshack.us/img821/8279/16gallopin.jpg

One rider to go, the maillot jaune. And ow man, how does Purito hate this cycling-discipline.... Joaquím Rodríguez finishes in 107th position, at 4'04....

Word from the DS
Again, a bad stage for the team. We expected Gesink to loose some time against Wiggins and Klòden, but not 1´30... Now we know, we need to attack in the mountains.

After the ITT, there's one more flat stage, before we enter the Massif-Central. So the stage from Cholet to Chateauroux should be for the sprinters again.
img99.imageshack.us/img99/6933/stage5.jpg
img513.imageshack.us/img513/9928/chateauroux1.jpg

182km to go
In the beginning of the stage, many riders try to form a breakaway. A group of 17 (!) creates a gap of one minute, but they get caught shortly after the Intermediate Sprint. Luca Paolini (Katusha) wins this sprint, in front of Alexandre Pichot (Europcar).
img59.imageshack.us/img59/2241/1182km.jpg

100km to go
Than a group of 14 riders can create a gap and get the approval of the peloton. Most famous names: Johan Vansummeren (Garmin), Bjorn Leukemans (BMC), Daniele Bennati (Euskaltel) and Jos van Emden (Rabobank).
img855.imageshack.us/img855/8061/2100km.jpg

11km to go
When the leading group is about to be caught, some riders attack out of the peloton. Again, Sylvain Cahavanel is the initiator, followed by Lars Ytting Bak (Lotto) and eventually Fabian Cancellara.
img513.imageshack.us/img513/7081/311km.jpg

5km to go
Chavanel and Bak are able to pass the leading group, but won't stand a chance against the peloton. They get caught shortly after the banner of the last 5km.
img685.imageshack.us/img685/3707/45km.jpg

2km to go
Team Sky is leading the sprint, with Ben Swift leading out Mark Cavendish. Our sprint train is doing better than the last stages, but still is falling back...
img716.imageshack.us/img716/6779/52km.jpg

1km to go
Ben Swift has done a great job and Cavendish take over with 1 km to go. But his opponents, and especially Farrar are closely behind.
img853.imageshack.us/img853/6709/61km.jpg

Finish
Again, Cav can't bring it home. Farrar has the best jump and wins the 3rd mass sprint this Tour. Romain Feillu gets the 2nd place, Cav the 3rd. And our team? Well, Kittel gets 8th, so our best result so far...

Okay, we know who is the best sprinter at the moment. Now, we're looking forward to the next stage, with the finish in/at the Super-Besse.

After yesterday's mass sprint, the riders enter the Massif Central, and finish in Super-Besse. The last 11 kilometres have an average gradient of 5.1%, so the GC can be shaken up here.
img545.imageshack.us/img545/4582/stage6.jpg
img204.imageshack.us/img204/3200/superbesse.jpg

114km to go
10 riders take part in today's BOTD and they create a maximum advantage of about 8 minutes. Nicolas Edet & Tony Gallopin (Cofidis), Stuart O'Grady (Qantas), Dimitry Kozontchuk (Nespresso), Karsten Kroon (BMC), Matteo Montaguti (Androni), Filippo Pozzato (Katusha), Staf Scheirlinckx (Lotto), Sébastien Turgot (Europcar) and Florian Vachon (AG2R) cooperate very well, but it's a hard day in the rain that is pouring down. Turgot takes the first KOTM-point, Pozzato the 2nd.
img638.imageshack.us/img638/8155/1114km.jpg

40km to go
The riders have started the ascend of the Col de la Croix-Morand (7.6km at 5.9%) and we definitely put a cross through Ivan Basso. He can't follow the pace set by the Radio Shack-team and will loose almost 10 minutes today.
img696.imageshack.us/img696/8647/240km.jpg

36km to go
The leading group crosses the summit, and Pipo Pozzato nearly beats O'Grady in the sprint for the points, meaning he will be the new KOTM-leader after this stage. The peloton, consisting of 62 riders, follows at 2'21.
img36.imageshack.us/img36/1432/336km.jpg

12km to go
The last climb of the day, to Super-Besse, has started and the peloton is only one minute behind the 10 leaders. As always, this is the moment were some riders try to avoid beig caught with an attack. Edet, Scheirlinckx and Kozontchuk are the one, while the others know they can't avoid the inevitable.
img526.imageshack.us/img526/8357/412km.jpg

10km to go
With 3 riders who can win the stage and even the Tour, Radio Shack has multiple options. They did the chase and when the leading group is about to get caught, Fränk Schleck attacks. It's pretty early, over 10km to go, but the team knows that when he gets caught, Klöden or Nibali can give it a go.
img836.imageshack.us/img836/3825/510km.jpg

6km to go
But the attack is better than expected, and with 6km to go, Schleck has a lead of 47 seconds! This is the moment that Wiggins and Rodríguez try to close the gap.
img835.imageshack.us/img835/3314/66km.jpg

3km to go
Joaquím Rodríguez needs about 2 kilometres to close the gap to Schleck. '32 behind is a group of 13 riders, including Sánchez, Velits, Wiggins, Evans, Leipheimer, Gerrans, Hesjedal, Roche, Horner, Riblon, Martin and Gesink & Vanendert. Menchov is '15 further down the road and Klöden is losing more time!
img337.imageshack.us/img337/4493/73km.jpg

2km to go
Robert Gesink has waited for the road to ascend steeper, and he launches his attack out of the chasing group. Nobody can follow him, and he closes the gap to the 2 leaders. The others are '20 behind.
img96.imageshack.us/img96/13/82km.jpg

1km to go
Gesink needs some time to recover a bit, and this is th emoment that Schleck launches another attack. Entering the last kilometre, he has created a gap of 9 seconds to Rodríguez and Gesink.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/3887/91km.jpg

400m to go
Schleck is loosing speed and Gesink has found some energy reserves. He sprints out of Purito's wheel and tries to close the gap to the oldest Schleck brother.
img268.imageshack.us/img268/3303/10400m.jpg

Finish
But it's not enough. Fränk Schleck wins the stage to Super-Besse, his first win in almost 2 years time. Gesink finishes within the same time, whereas Rodríguez looses '13. A group with Sánchez, Evans, Leipheimer and Wiggins finishes at '36. The next group with Hesjedal, Gerrans, Horner, Nibali, Menchov, Roche, Velits, Riblon, Martin, Vanendert and Vinokourov finishes at '55. Andreas Klöden looses 1'54 today. Johnny Hoogerland has to leave the Tour with a fractured rib, although he didn't crash (the good old PCM-logic)

Word from the DS
Too bad that Gesink came a few metres short to get the stage win, but his riding makes us very confident for the mountain stages. He looks like the strongest climber, although you can't compare Super-Besse withthe Hautacam, the Bonette-Restefond or Alpe d'Huez.

Awesome climb by Gesink. Looks very promising.

Thank you. I was surprised myself, Gesink could attack without getting with empty energy bars....

We stay in the Massif Central with the 7th stage, 158 kilometres between Brioude and Aurillac. In the last part of the stage, the riders have to climb the Pas de Peyrol, the first time they go over 1500 metres altitude.
img809.imageshack.us/img809/4199/stage7.jpg
img716.imageshack.us/img716/7857/aurillac.jpg

144km to go
We feel this is a stage for a succesful breakaway, so we try to be in it. Thomas Dekker is the first to try it, but the peloton stays closely behind. He manages to reach the summit of the Côte de Fraisse as the first one, but lets himself fall back in the peloton.
img853.imageshack.us/img853/1098/1144km.jpg

54km to go
After Dekker got reeled in, a group of 13 breaks away. Among them is Lieuwe Westra, together with Kroon, Ventoso, Demaret, Veikkanen, Cazaux, Montaguti, Vandborg, Pavarin, Felline, Langeveld, Vachon and Sulzberger.
The lead of this group to the peloton gets bigger and bigger. 54km before the finish, at the summit of the Col d'Entremont, it's already 12'13. This means that the 13 leaders will fight for the stage win today.
img535.imageshack.us/img535/6690/254km.jpg

39km to go
In the ascend of the Pas de Peyrol, it becomes clear that Francisco Ventoso, Karsten Kroon and especially Jussi Veikkanen are the strongest riders in the BOTD. They can fight for the KOTM-points, while th eothers, including Westra, are happy that they can hang on. So Veikkanen is the first at the summit of the Pas de Peyrol. The peloton is 15'19 behind, what means that Florian Vachon is in virtual yellow!
img685.imageshack.us/img685/8536/339km.jpg

33km to go
But the Pas de Peyrol causes soe cracks in the peloton. Cadel Evans, Joaquím Rodríguez and Samuel Sánchez fall behind and are one minute behind a group with our riders. So we work har to prevent them closing the gap. Strangely, none of the other teams, especially Radio Shack and Omega Pharma, want to help us, so before the last climb starts, the 2nd group merges with ours.
img221.imageshack.us/img221/9864/433km.jpg

9km to go
At the last steep ascend of the Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Donne (1.7km at 9.9%), Veikkanen shows that he is the strongest in the BOTD and attacks. None of the others can follow him. He reaches the summit with a gap of 32 seconds to Kroon, Ventoso and Cazaux, and '56 to a group with Westra.
Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Donne
img94.imageshack.us/img94/6092/59km.jpg

4km to go
Westra rides hard in the descend and is about to close the gap to Ventoso, Kroon and Cazaux. Veikkanen stays out of reach.
img14.imageshack.us/img14/2460/64km.jpg

Finish
Jussi Veikkanen was the strongest today in the BOTD, and fully deserves the win, the biggest in his career. Francisco Ventoso sprints to the 2nd place at '31, followed by Lieuwe Westra.
img21.imageshack.us/img21/6512/7finish.jpg

7km to go
Robert Gesink has the plan to attack at the summit of the Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Donne, being greatly helped by Jelle Vanendert. Only Tony Martin, being helped by Pierre Rolland, can follow him.
img269.imageshack.us/img269/5710/87km.jpg

Finish
Unfortunately, Martin and Rolland close the gap in the descend. They even outsprint Gesink, although they get outsprinted by Vanendert. The first group of the peloton follows shortly behind and finishes in the same time.
However, just as yesterday many GC-contenders loose time today. A group with with Sánchez, Rodríguez, Evans and Wiggins finishes 1'10 behind the group Gesink and another group with Ryder Hesjedal even 3'14!

Word from the DS
Although we didn't get a stage win, this was a very good stage for us. Westra did great with the 3rd place, and Veikkanen was just too strong. Gesink gained some more time against some opponents. Together with Nibali and Schleck, he looks to be the strongest rider in this Tour. As long as we can get rid of Martin in the Pyrenées and Alps.

Stage 9 is one transfer stage, between the Massif Central and the Pyrenées. The first part of the 169 kilometres are hilly, the last half is flat.

img804.imageshack.us/img804/4921/meteotoulouse.jpg

104km to go
We're already at the summit f the last climb of the day, and a BOTD consisting of 12 man is formed. The riders in it are: Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), Luca Barla (Androni), Bart De Clercq & Dominique Cornu (Lotto), Jos Van Emden (Rabobank), Lucas Sebastián Haedo (Saxo), Danilo Hondo (Lampre), Kevin Hulsmans (Cofidis), Alberto Ongarato (Vacansoleil), Luca Paolini (Katusha), Grégory Rast (Radio Shack) and Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel).
The 12 get a maximum lead of over 7 minutes.
img857.imageshack.us/img857/5664/1104km.jpg

8km to go
The gap to the peloton had decreased to 1'30, but at the small hills about 15km before the finish, the pace in the peloton drops. Apparantly, some of the sprinters got into trouble and the domestiques stopped the chase. As a result, the leading group has a lead of 1'46 with 8km to go, so for the 2nd day in a row, a breakaway will be succesful.
img710.imageshack.us/img710/4449/28km.jpg

2km to go
Knowing that there was no more chance to get the stage win, we settled us in the lead of the peloton, with the goal of practicing our train. Westra leads with 2km to go ('49 behind the leading group), and Sagan is about to take over, being the last lead-out man for Kittel.
img204.imageshack.us/img204/2181/32km.jpg

Finish
Barla and Ongarato start the sprint in the leading group, but instead of an Italian party, it becomes a Belgian one. Bart De Clerq is taking over and looking to win the stage, but he left a big gap on his left side. Greg Van Avermaet profits of it, and overtakes his countryman, taking the stage win. It's already his 3rd win of the season, after stage wins in Paris - Nice and the Tour of California.
And did our train worked? Well, when Sagan started to sprint with 1.8km to go (enough energy left, fitness over 90, daily form 0, Sp 81, Acc 78, on 99 and aggresive), he got overtaken by many others. Also Kittel (his yellow and red bar weren't empty when he finished, Sp 81, Acc 79, fitness over 90, daily form +1, on 99 and aggresive) couldn't make progress, so we had to settle with the 12th & 13th place in the sprint of the peloton..... Word from the DS
I get the feeling that we even loose a sprint against a train consisiting of Colombian and Asian riders.....

The Tour has started fantastic for you. You are holding a podium-spot before having reached the mountains. And the to ahead of you are people that you undoubtedly should be able to overtake in the mountains. Tony Martin is not really that good, and Gesink are better than Nibali there.

So, good luck further on, and I believe on Gesink as the winner of TdF.

Edit: I forgot to make a generel applause for your story. I have been following for very long time, and during GT-periods I check very often to see if you have made an update - keep up the good work!

@ The Blues: thanks a lot! Comments like these make me enyoing to continue the story! And I think Gesink is the big favourite here, although Nibali is a strong opponent.

Some disappointing stages, some excellent stages. In general a good start for you with Gesink being well placed.

A tip for the sprints:

It's way too late when your final lead out starts to sprint with 1,8 kms to go. Since I discovered that, my train usually consists of three riders. A strong flat rider (like you're doing it with Westra), the lead out and the sprinter. The flat rider keeps the train at the front and with 3,5-4 kms to go, he goes all in with point and 95-99 effort. Usually, the sprint doesn't start until maybe 2,5 kms to go, especially when your flat rider is riding at a high pace. Then, your lead out sprints. Your final sprinter should overtake with 1,3 kms to go at the latest! Maybe even 100-300ms earlier, depending on the speed of the lead out. Otherwise, he will never reach his full speed, which sort of seems to be your problem there.

This is how I do it lately and it works pretty nice, both on hard and extreme. Hope it could help Wink

And a general comment on the story: I might not comment that often, but I really admire the speed and continuity of your reporting. That's amazing! Not to mention that you consistently bring in top results!
