Well nothing going right in the GC of California so Chiarini did the right thing in breaking away and took a 2nd. Two podiums in one day

Stage 4 California: De Vries, oh I love him! Not only that he always gets Top10 in mass sprint finishs without sprint ability, but now he even stayed in front at the split. Though our stage win goal doesn't look to good, the GC looks like it's gonna be awesome.
Overall California: I hate that we always get in breakaways, but when we don't they succeed. Two stages so far without us being in breakaway and both times they finished in front. Goal will be hard to achieve.
However, I like that kinda nobody is talking about us in GC.. maybe we can turn this outsider role in a big surprise while everybody is looking on König, Horner, Costa and Kim.

Well in a selected bunch he has a decent chance, he has 67 SP i think which puts him one under Valverde. Those chances have gone now though.
I haven't raced mountain yet so no spoilers
TT report will be poor sorry guys I just had a hard time recording everything. At least I have screens for teams HQ & Exported results |

Our first serious time trialler is getting ready to start. It's Schmidt of MTN, He sets a reasonable benchmark at 59'58.
Day (UHC) sets a very surprising time, beating him by 17 seconds. It's proving to be a day when climbing ability is just as important as power on the flat.
Taylor Phinney is out, he will be looking at stage honours after BMC's recent disappointments. He goes into the lead. He smashes everyone by setting 57'47".
Tony Martin is out now! The beast in the rainbow bands will settle for nothing less than a stage win today. He is 1st through every check point and knocks down Phinney to second. He clocks 57'17".
Birt, was in the leaders jersey after stage one's fabulous win, he passed it onto Konig but will be looking to set a good time here. He finished 1'42" down on Tony Martin. We can see some big gaps today. You can see the steepness of the finish, it must put the riders in hell after 30km of relative flat road to work on.
TVG set out and he was on a mean pace, must have taken some ideas from the darkside of the force. He blitzed up the final climb, and sets an incredible time! he beats the world time trial champion by a whooping 50 seconds, I'm speechless. What could have been springs to mind. 56'27" is his time.
Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins, shows that a lack of turn of pace on the climb will slow you time down. However he gets closest to TVG time so far, 25 seconds slower.
Po-ding Kim will be looking to set a good time, he's already one Algarve & Bayern time trials and further taking the GC. He's slower than Tony Martin and Wiggins. He is 4th provisionally.
Now we see the top 5 set off, Here is the top 5 so far.
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Tejay Van Garderen | BMC Racing Team | 56'27 | 2 | Bradley Wiggins | Sky Procycling | + 25 | 3 | Tony Martin | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 50 | 4 | Po-ding Kim | Team Europcar | + 57 | 5 | Andrew Talansky | Garmin - Sharp | + 1'07 | 6 | Taylor Phinney | BMC Racing Team | + 1'20 | 7 | Peter Velits | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 1'22 | 8 | Tanel Kangert | Astana Pro Team | + 1'27 | 9 | Andriy Grivko | Astana Pro Team | + 1'32 | 10 | Janez Brajkovič | Astana Pro Team | + 1'41 |
Better in the short time trials and short climbs Sagan will be trying damage limitation. He finishes 2'00" back on TVG time. Enough for a top 10 in GC.
Horner has been a little off the pace for Radioshack but has done more than enough to stay in contention here. He makes up time on the climb and finishes +1'36". That's 12th.
White jersey wear was hoping for a good result, the longer TTs suit him. He sets a sharp time good enough for 6th. 16 seconds behind Kim and 6 seconds off Talansky. Wiggins remains in the best position for the GC at the moment.
Costa can be inconsistent in the TTs, but today he stayed within top 10 throughout the checkpoints and thats where he finishes. He's slower than his GC rivals apart from Horner who he beats by 6 seconds.
All eyes on the leader of the race. Yellow jersey man Konig (TNE) needs to set a solid time to stay in contention, there has been big time gaps so anywhere in the top 10 is great from him. It's not a great performance from him though, not what he needs, he is 1'07 back and 15th at the 3rd checkpoint.
He finishes in 16th, 1'46" slower than TVG's incredible ride, not a bad ride but I would have expected a little more from the leader of the race. Infact Mitchell Birt BEAT Konig in the TT.

Wiggins is the new leader of the Tour of California, it's a whisker of a lead though only two seconds in Costa! Konig loses the jersey but no worries for him, he is only 11 seconds back (9 from Costa) and by the way he dropped everyone including Costa on stage 2, it's well in his hands still. De Vries and Po-Ding make their TT ability count, they are only 15 seconds off Wiggins, it's wide open! Horner and Talansky are outside bets now, but a strong showing could steal the a win yet if they get away early on the climb. Brajkovič is in the top 10 for Astana with Kangert not in the frame anymore, Sagan won't be competing the stage tomorrow so I can't see a strong GC from him now. Rolland rounds out the top 10, he should work for Kim.
Tejay Van Garderen boasts himself all the way up to 14th! Incredible after that stage that got away from him. He will be with the best tomorrow and could even win still, hope for BMC's top 5 maybe?

Wow, that NetApp/Cannondale move on stage 2 really paid off now. T.J. would have flat out won here otherwise the GC.
I'm really satisfied honestly with the time loss. Only 11 seconds onto Wiggins and Rui Costa can be be taken back and everything's within reach. I expected worse at some point, although seeing Horner ahead of König is a bit weird. However everything is really close, so NetApp will have to try it all and the team is certainly up to the task so far, so why not tomorrow again. Fingers crossed!

Wiggins is good, but no turn of pace will be a problem. No raced the mountain stage so I can say this fairly, I think its between Konig or Costa. I'm as excited as anyone else right now! |

The most hollow victory of the season there. Not only has the horse bolted, but it's already 10 miles away. Still, a win's a win.
As an official neutral in the GC battle, I, like any sane person, will be cheering for Konig or Talansky. A top 10 is definitely possible for Lewis.

Mitchell with a good solid TT there for NetApp. Certainly a rider to watch out for in the future. Unfortunate that Konig wasnt too strong. 17th in the GC for Birt could mean that a breakaway attempt could move him into a top 10 and another stage win. However will not be disappointed if he leads Konig to victory and sacrifices himself.

Good TT for Sagan, holding on to the top 10 in GC. Mountain stage will be important for him. |

Wow, the GC is really close!
Po-Ding looking good, but has to finish in a group ahead, which is hard.

Not bad, considering the fact it was uphill TT.

Not too bad of a TT from Horner, really glad van Garderen had already lost time. Horner, given he finished higher up than Konig in the TT and the fact he is the better climber, should clean house in the next stage up Mount Diablo.
- Hoping to see some Horner fans on the mountainside. |
