Finally got my new much lighter wheels last week so went and did some real climbing for the 1st time since being hit by a car a few months back. I managed 3 ascents of Mt Donna Buang in the Yarra Ranges near Melbourne in Oz.
Mt Donna Buang Length: 16.8km, Average gradient: 6.4%, Elevation gain: 1,069m.
I set a PB on the last ascent which surprised me, gives me confidence for 3 Peaks challenge in March
Nice ride, that's some serious business.

Turbo trainer is the English word.
I'm using a Tacx Satori (5 or 6 times a week these days).
The flash graph on the "specificaties" page is very interesting. Looking at the Satori curves it shows that a bad cyclist like me apparently manages :
220 W at VS1 (3,0 W/kg)
290 W at VS2 ("threshold" ) (4,0 W/kg)
325 W as MAP (VO2max) (4,4 W/kg)
480 W as max explosive power (sprinting) (6,5 W/kg)
Not sure if it's so accurate though, given I feel the difficulty variates according to the tire pressure, its width or things like that.
IF it's accurate, then I should seriously question my training, I've lost truckloads of power since my junior days, which took place in the former century.
edit 2 : according to the conversion formula (VO2/min = 0,01224 * P max + 0,435), 325 W would give me a VO2 of about 58,5 ml/min/kg. That makes sense for my current weight and running performances.
And I can sustain 89 % of that virtually forever. Seems reasonable too.

I use the Elite real tour. It's really good. The only complaint is that it's quite loud |

That is so funny, you are all looking for hills and I would be happy if there would be one flat road near my town.
I guess I do more "climbing" when riding flat roads than you riding "hills".
Some hills within 15km of my home:

I agree with Lachi. It's a 1 km climb straight out of my front gate for me, and then pretty rolling with a few bigger hills after that. Not much proper flat. |

I don't live too far from Snowdonia so hills are not a problem for me, they are everywhere |

Round my area is more or less flat as a pancake, but there are a couple of decent 1km climbs at over 5 percent. For me at the moment, it is a decent challenge.
Tonights ride to and from Soccer training. Fastest ride around that route by 2kmph. Happy with that, seeing as l rode 50km yesterday in decent cross winds. https://www.bikema...ser/BVella

I have to ride 25km to Zolder where is a small hill (the one in WC form 2002 where Mario Cipollini won), 40km to the Cauberg and 30km to Kanne (Slingerberg:

You know these real off-days? Man those are real bummers.
Get on my bike, every second is like torture, after one hour, I have to stop, I'm just dead
While you can also have those days that you're invincible, I'd rather have a day like that again soon! |

Did you ride your bike today It's bloody damn cold here
I had a day like that last summer, I rode the whole day at the back of the group. At the end, the others asked me what was wrong

1000m of climbing isn't a lot for Britain. Just depends where you ride. I'm regularly clocking in 1,600m of climbing in rides. Though I have also been clocking in bigger rides than that... (and just to prove that point... https://app.strava...s/38874991 )
Haven't yet sent any entries off, as I kinda let the BC membership lapse, and they've been rather slow in fixing it so I can log back on to the website.
I imagine, at this rate, my first race might be mid march. More likely to be the "Easter Classic" at Castle Combe though.
Getting to see the uber-tiny race bike tomorrow. Some kind of carbon fibre bicycle... heres me thinking all bikes were made from tin, copper and steel. How times change eh?

That's awesome RJC i'd love to go ride around there it's a lot flatter around Hull were i live(probably should of said a lot of climbing meters for there) , you really chuck the miles in on one day instead of spreading does that work better for you or would you prefer to spread but have less time? What kind of efforts do you do on your rides? |

I'd much prefer to knock in three 100km rides each week, but as I've joined the real world last year reality came calling. I find Saturdays aren't usually a good day for the legs coming off a week of work, and so Sundays I compensate and get a massive kick of base work in.
I normally go like the clappers in March/April (I don't seem to go all too well in cold weather either), but after a few months that base work sorta seems to transfer quite well over into some seriously nice strength and endurance at the end of 3-4 hour races.
I don't usually do efforts on rides, as on those Sunday rides in particular I'm riding with a group. I guess I go fairly hard on climbs (do have to try and keep myself at the top of the pecking order!), and then either try to sadistically hurt myself a lot in the last hour, or hurt others. Whichever comes first.
Racing and chaingangs will kick my arse into gear soon. |

My longest ever ride. Legs feel decent also. Cross winds really affected me. Supposed to be about 15kmph which l rode straight into for the first 50k. Last part was epic. Wind on the back and flew home. |

Near my house is the famous Utrechtse Heuvelrug, with the most "toughest" climb, the Amerongse Berg, that is about 1km long with an average gradient of 5.5%. When I look good for it, I can fins a hill with a short piece of 10%.
I have to ride a little longer to Nijmegen (50km, or by car), with the Oude Holleweg ( https://heuvelsfietsen.nl/Rijk_van_Nij...lleweg.php ) with a max gradient of 17% as the most diffuclt one.
How I want to ride more in the mountains................

I can do about 1500m of climbing in just 80km.
The hills are short and steep, for longer climbs i'd have to do more than 150km.
