Start

Here we see yesterday's surprised winner Mitchell Birt in the leader's jersey for NetApp - Endura

BOTD

i.share.pho.to/dfb182e0_l.png

We saw the breakaway win yesterday, will they do it today? Teams have committed and the peloton doesn't seem to bothered. 12 Riders make the break of the day. Including Accent Jobs neo-pro Miles, Quintero (COL), Veilleux (EUC), Pomoshaikov (RVL), Di Serafino (AND), Clancy (TNN), Dyachenko (AST), Butler (CSS), Piedra (CJR), De Maar (UHC), Garzelli (VIN) and Dimitriov (TNE). They have a 3'24" gap.

160km to go

i.share.pho.to/3610cb64_l.png

MTN take control of the peloton in the race's early stage. Gap around 3'30"

137km to go - IS

i.share.pho.to/b94b5a5e_l.png

The break roll through the intermediate sprint uncontested, the gap is at 4'30"

116km to go

i.share.pho.to/373dc509_l.png

The riders hit the bottom of the Cat 1 climb, the gap is back down to 3'40"

113km to go

i.share.pho.to/fea594f7_l.png

Butler (CSS) decides to up the tempo and the gap goes up significantly to 4'30".

i.share.pho.to/66bd4112_l.png

NetApp start to pace set in defence of the leaders jersey.

100km to go

i.share.pho.to/67208109_l.png

The break roll over the highest point of today's stage. Gap is 4'56"

80km to go

i.share.pho.to/3d2c2cae_l.png

The gap is 4'19", Niki Terpstra has just been on the front to reduce the gap.

60km to go

i.share.pho.to/b4893203_l.png

The breakaway get the first respite on descent with gap reduced again at 4 minutes.

36km to go - IS

i.share.pho.to/faf55357_l.png

Dyachenko decides he wants the points and time bonus this time round, he didn't need to sprint for it though.

18km to go

i.share.pho.to/50907cc8_l.png

The breakaway light it up now, Clancy attacks from the front of the group, Miles quickly, Quintero decides to join in on the fun, they know they won't put up a fight on the uphill finish. The guys up front have 4'00" back to the peloton.

10km to go

i.share.pho.to/9ba6aae9_l.png

Miles is the first to hit the 10km to go point, the trio have a small 25 second gap on the rest of the break. The gap back to the peloton has gone up to 4'26"!

7km to go

i.share.pho.to/11d3ece7_l.png

Garmin take over the peloton but aren't really doing anything, they have stopped riding, the break still has 5 minutes!

5km to go

i.share.pho.to/3d41c02c_l.png

The break comes back together, no more attacks at the moment, the peloton are riding again but have only reduced the gap to 4'40".

3km to go

i.share.pho.to/edc60574_l.png

Quintero decides to go, it will be a very long 3km with this constantly steep gradient, a injection of pace in the peloton could see them contest the win amazingly. Gap is still 4'47" though.

i.share.pho.to/974228a7_l.png

Here we go! It's action time as Costa attacks followed by Konig immediately, Sagan also tries to follow in the green jersey.

2.5km to go

i.share.pho.to/9ffd3640_l.png

It comes back together again they start looking at each other while Clancy and Miles struggle at the back. The peloton are coming fast!

i.share.pho.to/1d8840dc_l.png

Further back, Konig stretches his legs and drops Costa immediately, him and Sagan didn't response.

1km to go

i.share.pho.to/6cc03b89_l.png

Pomoshaikov attacks under the 1km banner with no response from the break, they grind it out.

i.share.pho.to/623af76f_l.png

Konig now hits the 1km banner 30 seconds later, he starts to over take the escapees of the start of the day. Costa finds himself a carries on his pursuit. Horner starts to attack but it will be too late for him today. Christian de Vries follows of CSS. There is a group of the Garmin boys, Wiggins & Dombrowski, Po-Ding Kim, Sagan, TVG and yellow jersey Birt.

500m to go

i.share.pho.to/24c524f3_l.png

Pomoshaikov is attacking again to keep that gap open. Garzelli, De Maar and Dyachenko chase. Don't be fooled by the images, the Europcar rider in front is David Veilleux and the Net App rider is Dimitriov both from the break.

200m to go

i.share.pho.to/b3a0bc27_l.png

Pomoshaikov certainly thinks he has won, the top 20 riders are all broken up now, it's a mess. The time gaps will be interesting.

Finish

i.share.pho.to/70936885_l.png

He does take it, amazing how fast pros can cycle up hill celebrating! The top 4 have the same time, Konig still leads of the riders from the peloton.

i.share.pho.to/64edaf90_l.png

Konig crosses the line with a time gap in front of Costa. NetApp retain the leaders jersey with their lead rider. Horner and de Vries cross the line together with Po-Ding Kim just behind.

Another 11th place.

EDIT: So many races! Nothing to say apart from seriously disappointed with Tejay. Sad

Such a messy race, riders everywhere didn't know what to do Frown

And my custom rider Miles (AJW) gets the combativity award (not bias, just the truth Pfft)

Great day. NetApp is pure quality here. Dimitriou in BOTD was a great set-up. Team really took advantage of the leader bonus too, where riders tend to look only towards the jersey, while König got away. Much needed time now, off to defend it for good now. Fantastic! Stage would have been better if Dimitriou or König won the stage and Horner dropped out. Pfft Cool Banana

nacho63 obviously brings luck to me. First our only stage win in early season and now this.

What a mess was California Pfft

Happy with Verboven and Martens. Bos continuing to be mediocre. I made him leader for the Tour, very promising..

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Dimitriou did no work all day, elzlicho! Should have won the stage in all honesty but NetApp couldn't really ask for more.

Peloton are being very strange here!

Nice to see Costa in a good position already a few seconds ahead of Po-Ding.
But i still think that the race is weird. Already two successful breakaway attempts and Movistar making the pace on a sprint finishing stage (1). Just weird.

Sagan has a chance for a top 10 in GC here. Just need that stage win...

Of course, Dimitriou has been a classic "sent guy upfront, control race" guy. He did good. It'd been totally unfair if would have won the stage, but finally a nice result for our greek. Smile

I just saw. But well, as long as my sprinters (Costa, Valv, Quintana, Castroviejo) keep performing better on these stages than BMC's sprinters I will not care too much...

Stage 2

www.procyclingstats.com/races/profilesmaps/2013-02/thumbs/Amgen-Tour-of-California-Stage-3-1360690843.png

The race officials have classified the stage as flat but i'm not so sure. The climbs shouldn't be hard enough to derail the sprinters however.

Start

i.share.pho.to/f108d89f_l.png

The peloton start stage 3, we get a good shot of de Vries (CSS) in white.

Cat 2 KOM 1

i.share.pho.to/6ff4b73d_l.png

No breakaway just yesterday but Garzelli (VIN) attacks over the peak.

140km to go

i.share.pho.to/b660b913_l.png

Garzelli creates a big gap on his own in short distance.

120km to go

i.share.pho.to/c3dda97f_l.png

It's going to be a lonely day for Garzelli, he is now 4'56" in front of the peloton all by himself, despite the successes of the break on stages 1 or 2 no one else is interested today.

100km

i.share.pho.to/2bb1813d_l.png

Time check - 7'01" back to peloton.
NetApp and Cannondale do the work on the front.

82km to go - KOM

i.share.pho.to/61136de6_l.png

Time check - 6'19"

66km to go - KOM

i.share.pho.to/a23ef99f_l.png

Time check - 4'53"

60km to go

Peloton hit a short downhill section, De la cruz picks up the pace at the front, 4'18" behind Garzelli.

40km to go - IS

i.share.pho.to/3d1fe27b_l.png

Garzelli sprints, maybe he thinks he has to pick up his pace.

31.9km to go - KOM

i.share.pho.to/103ab053_l.png

The peloton rolls through the last KOM of the day, it's downhill then flat to the finish. They trail Garzelli by 1.1km and 2'42".

20km to go

i.share.pho.to/88fe46ed_l.png

Garzelli passes under the first banner of the last 20km with a 1'41" gap.

15km to go

i.share.pho.to/fa0d9eac_l.png

Cannondale lead the downhill charge, Garmin are in the mix thinking about Farrar.

10km to go

i.share.pho.to/a4ddd1a9_l.png

Through the 10km mark, the peloton have Garzelli in their sights, not longer until he gets caught. A valiant effort from him today.

7km to go

i.share.pho.to/d986388d_l.png

They have caught him now, Cannondale put the gas down.

5km to go

i.share.pho.to/6336a057_l.png

The peloton is unorganised with no train taking it up on the front. Sagan looks well prepared for the sprint with two teammates in front of him. Garmin increase the pace for Farrar.

4km to go

i.share.pho.to/2f8c0b29_l.png

Garmin have their man in optimal position but can they maintain it? Cannondale will have to catch up. Gallopin, Coquard and Phinney all up their. Costa also tries to get in the mix.

3km to go

i.share.pho.to/1e64d96f_l.png

Farrar struggles to keep hold of his train, Sagan has one leadout man, he starts to come up on the other side of the road.

2.5km to go

i.share.pho.to/8a8df57b_l.png

We see an ariel shot of the sprint lining up. Lue Khamse Khamphan tries to go long!

2km to go

i.share.pho.to/7e317989_l.png

Sabatini opens up his sprint for Cannondale, Kreder (GRS) latches on with Sagan on his wheel.

1.5 km to go

i.share.pho.to/e32c63a0_l.png

Sabatini opens up a massive gap, who could take the victory for himself!

1km to go

i.share.pho.to/35497240_l.png

It's Sagan now who opens up his sprint, he won't be beaten.

500m

i.share.pho.to/1c9daec7_l.png

He's a cut above, he almost gives himself a time gap.

Finish

i.share.pho.to/1ab81ea1_l.png

It's easy, he celebrates through the line with a massive gap behind but the race officials don't give him a time gap. The hills took out a sting in the sprinters, Costa and Gallopin finish 2nd and 3rd. It's a very valuable 12 second time bonus for Costa.
