Quintana looks like he is relaxing in a big chair with some music playing while climbing Zoncolan. WTF!

Well that was a shite stage. Literally nothing happened, and when it did it was spectator interference.
That's what happens when there's too much slope (Vuelta, hello). According to Fred Grappe's twitter, 93 % of the power went into fighting the slope, so it basically was a matter of W/kg and effort management to make it to the top in the least time. Being in a group had no effect (psychological maybe), and Quintana just had to control the guys fighting for the podium.
Nothing else to expect, really. |

Wout! You legend! Pulling the two strongest climbers this Giro up the Zoncolan!
Bloody brilliant man... I still remember Metz two years ago...his carreer looked over... and now here he is.
He's got a new dedicated fan. From being a Vacansoleil fan up until this season, now I know again who to cheer for!

To be honest, I have to say I was disappointed with Quintana. He must have been sure he was winning. He should have taken up responsibility atleast in last 4 -5 kms as a leader and attack and ascertain his dominance.
And that's what I like about Froome. This guy is not scared to attack in last 5 -7 kms and go out all alone. He did at AX3 Domain, then at Ventoux and Alp d'Heuz (though he fell off later). Again on climb to Semnoz he was first guy to start attacking. Last race at Romandie he again closed down Nibali and attack.
I mean till last year TdF Froome had not won any grand tour either. So same for Quintana, I feel he should have also attacked and tried to go alone.
Unless of course if you are suffering and just holding on which with Quintana you are never sure.

Or he doesn't consider Uran to be a serious GC threat for the future, nor one of the greatest GC leader, so he doesn't need to make a huge psychological impact on him by dropping him whenever he can.
Oh, and he's his room mate too, when they're in Europe (and not racing, obviously). |

By what you have written there you are pretty much saying Quintana raced smarter than Froome, he played it perfectly and when there was no need to attack he didn't which you would think leads to him saving energy so if anyone who he needs to counter go's on a big attack he can go after them and possibly drop them. Froome attacked then lost time to his rivals. It might be entertaining but far from smart racing

Putting Quintana/Uran/Froome aside, I think there is virtue in humility.
I don't really see what you mean though, Nin. Quintana attacked prior to Froome at AX3 Domaines and Mont Ventoux, and was the better rider up to Alp d'Huez and Semnoz. Is it about general attacking (in Froome's case Tour de Romandie, AX3 Domain), extending your lead when it is necessary (Ventoux, Alp d'Huez) or taking initiave although being comfortable in the lead (Semnoz)? There have been countless GC leaders in history who have done it one way or another (think Armstrong who stomped down his feet at every occassion), but Froome is in no way exceptional in his approach - except maybe for him looking down at stems maybe, and because he comes off lately as a pretentious, backstabbing SoB...
(Quintana on the other hand, he really rides smart and actively uses the interests of his rivals to his own gain - not that I particularly like that more than any other approach, but it is something rather new (or rarely used) and smart)
That aside, I think the sentence "[Froome] is not scared to attack in last 5 -7 kms and go out all alone" is fairly overdramatized. Scared of attacking in the last 5 kilometers, you make it sound like he's risking everything...
On an unrelated note (not about Nin), I notice some patterns and I think it's strange how people have to mention the occassions when Froome did something noteworthy ("he attacked here, and here... and oh, here he attacked too... for 3 seconds" ), whereas with other riders, though one may not like them, people know their quality, history and virtues.

@ Strydz and @ Shonak-
I just wanted to see Quintana's real pace. I feel he might have been having bigger hand than he has shown us. Of course he won TT but all out 1 hour effort is very different to 4 hour mountain top finish. |
