Jakstar22 - That's true. Thanks
TTspecialist - Experience is very important in these races. Hopefully he'll grown into it soon, thanks!
Definitely K-B-K today and probably also Strade Bianchi! |

Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne
Not so tough as yesterday, Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne is usually something for sprinters. I'll try to shake pure sprinters today!
Last year I finished 5th, having raced too aggressive. I hope to finally get my first classic win here today!
The day started rainy, so the roads got wet. Good for me!
The peloton was not pressing enough so all the sprinters had too easy a time. I thought I might wake them up!
Cancellara joined me and we were off with just the two of us!
It would've been the perfect race but a large group formed behind us and brought us back... When they did, the attacks started fairly soon.
I tried resting for a few kilometers and then I saw Cancellara was going for another go, I went with him!
Boasson Hagen had gone further and no one was able to follow him. Two groups were chasing him, I was in the second group.
He was still going strong. Me and Sep Vanmarcke, who was also strong yesterday, were the final two left of the chase and we started a desperate sprint from far out.
I passed him and saw Boasson Hagen up close!
But he's a real pro, he didn't crack. Seeing him win, something inside me cracked and Vanmarcke snatched the lead back on the line, I was beaten.
Once again I fail completely. I did everything I possibly could, attacked, countered, bluffed... In the end, maybe I'm just not strong enough for that classic win I'm dreaming of...

There you go, two podium places, still no win. Vlaanderen and Roubaix will probably be too tough for me to win so young, so I can only hope, dream, pray that I catch a break at the E3 or Gent - Wevelgem. I want that classic win so much!
I mean, all in all, these podium places here at my age are amazing, but when you're so close to winning, it's only natural you want more!
In a few days I'll be riding Strade Bianchi, where I'll be defending my victory from last year, let's hope I'm up to it,
Stijn |

It's probably not in his nature, but Stijn would do better to ride a bit less aggresive. It's not his job to split the peleton, he has his awesome sprint.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Can't Stijn let his team mates make the peloton suffer, instead of doing it all on his own? Leading is also delegating |

Ollfardh - That's true. But he doesn't want to become that rider that never rides and only sprints, you know He's no wheelsucker. Though he could do with a little more bluffing!
Daggen - You're right, it's still good
Blueprint - That's actually very true Maybe he's still a bit too young for that. He can ride like a leader, but he still has to learn to act like a leader.
FreitasPCM - I think he's on an excellent fitness-schedule His abilities have been developing non-stop, too. I think he might be a world class rider one day, in the not-so-far future maybe
I'm really glad with all the support. Thanks a lot, everyone following and commenting! I'm honored with so many people following this, I hope it can even get better, and criticism is always welcome |

A Great performance from Stijn, especially when he was up the road with Cancellara,
A third place is just fantastic, so next year has to be the win |

Strade Bianche
Welcome in Italy!
Unlike the cold weather in Belgium, Spring really has begun here. It's warm for the time of year and the sun is up most of the time!
Last year Stijn took the win by attacking. Biggest competition this year: Valverde, Visconti and Freire.
I'm struggling a bit to find a decent shape.
Maaskant proved that he's been an excellent transfer. He took more than 80 km for his account.
With 40 km left to go, the pace was not too high and I attacked! It had some punch to it, which makes me hopeful!
I was good for a while, but after a couple of minutes, the peloton was closing in quickly.
That was my day... Still looking for my legs of last year, I'm afraid.
When Willy was almost caught, I made the jump to him.
He set himself in fifth gear and went 100% for me. We took about 30 seconds on the (thinned out) peloton. After 5 km, Willy was done for, I thanked him and left him behind.
My lead grew to 50 seconds. The peloton split up on the small, typical Toscane roads and there was a small group of five chasing me. Among them was Tom Slagter.
When they started their sprint, it was too late. I divided my energy well and didn't slow down on the final small climb.
And I have to tell you, the relief was immense! After a win in Australia and two in Oman, I finally win my first single day race this year! Two in a row here!
I'm so happy. It's amazing. I was a bit disappointed with the Belgian Opening Weekend, so this is real good with my eye on Milan - San Remo. Just like last year I win here with a late attack!
Willy also pointed out to me this is already my 20th professional victory! That's actually an amazing result.

Flash interview!
Interviewer: Congratulations, Stijn Van Gent. Two in a row!
Van Gent: It's amazing. It's just a lovely race. I always enjoy coming here!
Interviewer: Once again you attack from far out, only to stay out of reach of a small, select group. How do you time your attack so well?
Van Gent: Well, I really had a lot of help from Willy Wouters today. He really helped creating the gap. Then it was a matter of dividing my energy.
Interviewer: With two wins in a row you hold the record, the first to win two editions. How is that?
Van Gent: It's a fairly new race, of course, but I mean, it's just amazing. It's one of my favorite races.
Interviewer: We see the podium is ready, thanks!
Van Gent: Thanks!
I'm ready for Tirreno - Adriatico. I hope Willy is, too.
Until then,
Stijn & Willy |
