img407.imageshack.us/img407/8609/4ploeg.jpg

The favourites
*** Jetse Bol (Rabo CT), Russel Downing (Sky), Stefan van Dijk (Veranda's Willems)
** Sebastian Siedler (Differdange), Tom Veelers (M&M's), Fred Rodriguez (Garmin)
* Robert Wagner (Radio Shack), Gert Steegmans (Omega Pharma), Nico Eeckhout (An Post)

Our goals
We'll try to bring young Jens Mulder into a good position for the sprint, but don't know if he has the stamina already to do it. So: no goals Smile

The race
A group of 11 riders form the BOTD, including some unexpected names: Matthias Frank (BMC), Nicolas Vogondy (Cofidis) and Daniel Martin (Garmin). But of course, they get caught and the race turns out in a mass sprint.
Unfortunately, our sprinter Jens Mulder couldn't hold on and got dropped in the last 10 kilometres. The sprint for the win was between 3 riders. Young Dutch talent Jetse Bol (who is on our target list to get in the team for 2013!) finally didn't spoil his energy with a wasteless attack in the last 15km, and outsprinted Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil) and Russell Downing (Sky).
Sep Vanmarcke was our man for the sprint, after Mulder got dropped, and he surprised with a 8th place.

Word from the DS
We learned one lesson today: Mulder needs to improve his basic speed and stamina, but we still see him as a future sprint star! And a second lesson: Vanmarcke isn't a bad sprinter. And the third lesson; we have to get Bol!

The preparation for the Tour de France traditionally starts with the Critérium du Dauphiné. This year is the 64th edition of the 8-stage race that features a very nice mix of time-trialing, flat stages and climbing.
31 of the previous editions were won by a French rider and the French Nello Lauredi, Bernard Hinault and Charly Mottet, together with Spanish Luis Ocana, hold the record with 3 wins. Last year's editions was won by Kazack Alexandre Vinokourov, his 2nd win and 12 years after the first one. Andy Schleck finished second in a rather weak field, with Tony Martin in third.

The Critérium du Dauphiné starts with a 6.5km prologue in Villeurbanne, which is totally flat.
img192.imageshack.us/img192/5446/etappe1.jpg

The next two stages are classified as flat, but both stages have some difficult hills in it.
Stage 2, from Villeurbanne to Charvieu - Chavagneux (190km) has 2 climbs in the middle of it.
img440.imageshack.us/img440/5584/etappe2.jpg

And stage 3, from Charvieu - Chavagneux to Vals les Bains (198km) has a tough climb with the summit 21km before the finish.
img207.imageshack.us/img207/1376/etappe3.jpg

Stage 4 is only 159km long, but can be decisive for the GC. The finish is at the summit of the legendary Mont Ventoux!
img191.imageshack.us/img191/9382/etappe4.jpg

One day after, awaits a 41km ITT with start and finish in Saint-Paul-les-Trois-Chateaux.
img690.imageshack.us/img690/3217/etappe5.jpg

Stage 6 from Crest to Grenoble can be a danger for the GC-contenders, with the last summit 13km before the finish in Grenoble.
img440.imageshack.us/img440/3771/etappe6.jpg

Stage 7 from Grenoble to Megeve Cote 2000 is this years queens stage, featuring 7 KOTM-sprints and the finish in the ski-resort Megeve Cote 2000.
img714.imageshack.us/img714/2530/etappe7.jpg

Stage 8, with start and finish in Megeve has a very difficult final part, with 3 tough climbs in the last 30 kilometres.

- Why not go for another KOTM-jersey in a World Tour race?

Good Luck in the Criterium du DauphineWink

img585.imageshack.us/img585/5435/1logo.jpg

The Critérium du Dauphiné kicks off with a 6.5 km long, pancake flat prologue in the streets of Villeurbanne. By the way, it's the same route as in 1998.
img192.imageshack.us/img192/5446/etappe1.jpg

Last years winner Alexandre Vinokourov starts pretty early and rides a time of 8'41. He has to settle with the 29th time of the day.
img696.imageshack.us/img696/5756/1vinokourov.jpg

The first of the contenders to win today, is the Swedish TT-champ Gustav Erik Larsson. He completes the 6.5km in 8'16, and sets the new best time.
img220.imageshack.us/img220/1403/2larsson.jpg

But that time gets broken only a few riders after. Euskaltels Jonathan Castroviejo is 4 seconds faster: 8'12.
img32.imageshack.us/img32/805/3castroviejo.jpg

The time of Castroviejo proofs to be a hard time to crack. Even former TT-world champion Michael Rogers (Team Sky) can't beat it, he finishes '10 behind.
img830.imageshack.us/img830/7516/5rogers.jpg

Wilco Kelderman is our most important rider for the GC in the Dauphiné, but with 64 race days already this season including the Giro, he's getting tired. He is the fastest of our team today, but has to settle with the 23rd time at '27. He's 1 second faster than his team mates Peter Sagan & Marc De Maar.
img806.imageshack.us/img806/6725/6kelderman.jpg

Czech Roman Kreuziger is one of the favourites to win the Dauphiné, like his team mate Vino did last year. But his time is disappointing: 16th at '24.
img38.imageshack.us/img38/5812/7kreuziger.jpg

After Andreas Klöden (Radio Shack) rode the 4th time so far, there's only one rider remaining, who can improve Castroviejo's time. Alberto Contador says a little prayer before he starts the 6.5km, in his preparation to win his 5th Tour de France. But also Contador can't beat Castroviejo, he has to settle with the 3rd place at '4.

Word from the DS
We knew we didn't stand a chance today to score a top 5, or even top 10, so losing "only" '27 isn't that bad.

64 racedays and it`s just the Dauphinee. This was an amazing spring for Kelderman then.
Good luck for the race. Don`t have Kelderman`s stats in my mind, but was surprised to see him that good actually.

FreitasPCM
Interesting development from Castroviejo. Hope Keldermann has the energy to fight for a top-10, as Vanendert lost a bit of time. Still, it's just the begining and there's a lot of kms to race. Smile

Here you go:
img833.imageshack.us/img833/888/pcm0001th.jpg

You can say he developed very, very well.... The Dauphiné is one of his last races of the year, only 2 more races in august (Coppa Bernocchi, Tre Valle Varesine) and in october the Tour of Bejing. He requested for a long vacation Cool

The first stage, 190 kilometres between Villeurbanne and Charvieu - Chavagneaux, is considered as a flat stage, but in the middle part, two small mountains have to be climbed. The first one, the Col de la Ordonnaz (15.8km at 4.5%) has an altitude of 935, the second one, the Col de la Berche (16.6km at 3.1%) is a little lower.
img440.imageshack.us/img440/5584/etappe2.jpg

104km to go
A group of 9 riders has gone on an adventure and have taken a lead of 3 minutes while ascending the Col de la Ordonnaz. Jelle Vanendert tries to focus on winning the KOTM-jersey, and attacks out of the peloton. He closes the gap to the leading 9, but isn't able to overtake them to collect the maximum of points. Imanol Erviti (Movistar) is the first at the summit, followed by J. Bérard (AG2R) and Dimitri Muravyev (Astana). But because of the attack by Vanendert, the peloton has raisen the pace and follows shortly behind. In the descend there is a regroupement.
img207.imageshack.us/img207/5664/1104km.jpg

69km to go
In the short flat part between the decend of the Ordonnaz and the foot of the ascend of the Col del la Berche, Vasil Kiryienka (Astana) and George Hincapie (BMC) attack. They reach the 2nd KOTM-sprint together. Damien Gaudin (Europcar) follows at 1'57, and the peloton at 2'19.
img846.imageshack.us/img846/8986/269kmz.jpg

40km to go
The teammates of GC-leader Jonathan Castroviejo have taken th elead of the peloton, to chase Kiryienka and Hincapie (Gaudin has been caught already). 40km before the finish, at the 2nd Intermediate sprint, the gap is 2'46.
img402.imageshack.us/img402/737/340km.jpg

14km to go
The pace in the peloton gets quicker when Vacansoleil takes over, to bring their sprinter Romain Feillu the win. As a result, Hincapie and Kiryienka get caught with 14km to go.
img705.imageshack.us/img705/2661/414km.jpg

2km to go
2 kiometres before the finish, and Romain Feillu is in trouble. He has no more leadout-man left and has to turn it into a long sprint. And there are some guys at his wheel, who enjoy it, especially Cofidis-rider Samuel Dumoulin. Peter Sagan is in 6th place here.
img341.imageshack.us/img341/6779/52km.jpg

Finish
And what Feillu feared, happens. He's out of energy too far before the finish, and his pace drops. Dumoulin overtakes him and easily wins the sprint, his 2nd win of the year (Hel van het Mergelland). Alan Davis finishes in 2nd, Mirco Lorenzetto in 3rd, Feillu in 4th and Peter Sagan in 5th.

Word from the DS
It was an okay-stage for us. Vanendert took some KOTM-points, and Saga finished in the Top 5. He'll probably has a better chance tomorrow, with the summit of a cimb 21km before the finish.

The 3rd stage is also considered as flat, but has a nasty climb with th esummit only 21 kilometres before the finish in Vals les Bains.
img207.imageshack.us/img207/1376/etappe3.jpg

145km to go
With some early KOTM-points to be collected, Jelle Vanendert decides to be in the early breakaway, with the intention to fall back after the 2 early climbs.
So het takes the points at the Cote Cvas, in front of Alexandre Pichot (Europcar). In this group are also Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma), Luca Paolini (Katusha), Taylor Phinney (BMC), Marcel Siebergh (Lotto), Mikael Delage (FDJ), Jimmy Engoulvent (Garmin), Kalle Kriit (Sony Ericsson) and Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel).
img88.imageshack.us/img88/821/1145km.jpg

122km to go
Next climb is the Cote Lens-Letang and again Vanendert take sthe full 7 points. The leading group has become bigger and also Karsten Kroon (BMC), Tristan Valentin & Mickaël Buffaz (Cofidis) and Danilo Hondo (Lampre) have joined the leaders. Th epeloton follows at 5 minutes.
img209.imageshack.us/img209/7931/2122km.jpg

21km to go
Because th egap back to the peloton is that big, Vanendert decides to continue in this group, but to save as much energy as possible. But when he waited for the DS-car to get ome water before the last climb started, he lost contact with the others in the group. He continued climbing in his own pace, passing rider by rider that was with him in the BOTD.
Only BMC's Karsten Kroon stays out of reach when he reached the summit. Kroon leads with '34 over Vanendert and Buffaz and 1'40 over the peloton. As his French companion is totally wasted, and Vanendert feels he won't be able to close the gap to Kroon by himself, he decides to take it easy and waits for the peloton.
img832.imageshack.us/img832/5140/321km.jpg

Finish
So it's Karsten Kroon taking his first win of the season, a great result for the 36-year-old Dutchie!
img705.imageshack.us/img705/3124/4finish.jpg

Peloton
The peloton finishes 1'05 behind Kroon, which means the BMC-rider overtakes the lead in the GC. Of course, Dumoulin wins the sprint of the peloton, passing Lars Boom and GC-leader Castroviejo shortly before the finish. The 2 attacked with 5km to go. Peter Sagan is the best from our team in 9th position.

Thanks for his stats. Really well improved. And just 21 but probably already close to his limits. Wink

Hope he can stay with the best in the mountains.

Stage 4 of this edition of the Critérium to Dauphiné is one with 2 faces. The first 140 kilometres of it after the start in Vals les Bains are completely flat, but the last 19 are extremely difficult. Why? Two words: Mont Ventoux!
img191.imageshack.us/img191/9382/etappe4.jpg
img716.imageshack.us/img716/5301/montventoux.jpg

100km to go
Apparantly, most riders are feared because of today's final ascend of the Mont Ventoux, as only 5 riders are in the BOTD. Damien Gaudin (Europcar), Adam Hansen (Lotto), Vincent Jerome (Europcar), Stuart O'Grady (Qantas) and Ruben Plaza) are the brave ones and they get a maximum lead of 7 minutes.
img828.imageshack.us/img828/9840/1100km.jpg

18km to go
When the pace increases in the peloton, the gap to the leaders is quickly getting smaller. When the ascend of the Mont Ventoux begins, the peloton is only 1'52 behind.
img838.imageshack.us/img838/6088/218km.jpg

9km to go
It takes the half of the climb, to see the first attack. And of course, the rider who does it is French. Christophe Kern (Europcar) attacks and passes Plaza, the last rider of the BOTD that gets caught.
img856.imageshack.us/img856/5053/39km.jpg

7km to go
The pace increases a lot and our two best climbers, Jelle Vanendert & Wilco Kelderman can't follow it. When they reach Chalet Reynard and switch from the forrest to the lunar landscape, they are already over a behnd behind the first group.
img36.imageshack.us/img36/914/47km.jpg

6km to go
The next attack is again a French one. National champion David Moncoutié attacks with 6km to go, and his attack is followed by Alberto Contador and Remy Di Gregorio.
img600.imageshack.us/img600/3407/56km.jpg

4km to go
Contador can easily close the gap to Moncoutié and immediately leave him behind. With 3600 metres to go, Moncoutié folloes at '22, Di Gregorio at 1'03 and a group with Klöden, Rogers, Kern, Nieve and Lopez at 1'15.
img12.imageshack.us/img12/2460/64km.jpg

2km to go
After a setback halfway up the climb, Wilco Kelderman has found a good rhythm to continue the ascend and passes rider by rider. With 2 kilometres remaining he is already within the first 20.
img638.imageshack.us/img638/4297/72kmr.jpg

Finish
The win goes to Alberto Contador, his 9th of the season. His form is great already, he gave the others no chance to win this one. Moncoutié finishes in 2nd at 1'07, Klöden 3rd at 1'36 and Kelderman in 17th at 3'43.

Today's winner

Word from the DS
Contador is strong, very strong. But isn't it to early?
Anyway, Kelderman did a good job, after a bad first half of the climb. Unfortunately, he just missed contact with the group riding for 9th place. He should be able to improve some places after tomorrows ITT (41km).

I think it's pretty obvious who's here to take the win. Pfft

A pity Kelderman couldn't follow.
The poor boy needs some rest, luckily he gets it when this is finished Pfft

One day after the Mont Ventox follows a 41.3 kilometres long flat ITT with start and finish in Saint-Paul-les-Trois-Chateaux.
img690.imageshack.us/img690/3217/etappe5.jpg

The best time is set by Jesse Sergent (Radio Shack, 59'46), when Joost Posthuma surprises us. He is almost a minute faster and the new time to beat is 58'53.
img31.imageshack.us/img31/6399/2posthuma.jpg

But the time won't stand for long. Omega Pharma's Frantisek Rabon overtakes the 2 riders that started in front of him (including Thor Hushovd), and finishes after 58'37.
img401.imageshack.us/img401/5642/3rabon.jpg

It takes some time, before the time set by Rabon is broken. Swedish TT-champion Gustav Erik Larsson is the one to do it, and the new time to beat is 58'01.
img853.imageshack.us/img853/5201/5larsson.jpg

Our leader Wilco Kelderman has to ride a good TT, to climb some places. And although he's getting very tired after the Giro, he finishes the ITT 9th place (one place behind Posthuma) with a time of 59'04. Because of this, he jumps to the 8th place in the GC!
img215.imageshack.us/img215/1484/7kelderman.jpg

The first rider of the Top 5 in the GC to start is Mikel Nieve (Astana). Nieve is a weak time trialist, and ends up in 83rd position, 1h01'25.
img6.imageshack.us/img6/474/8nieve.jpg

Next to start is former TT-world champion Michael Rogers. He overtakes Nieve and even sets a new best time: 58'00, one second faster than Larsson!
img832.imageshack.us/img832/3160/9rogers.jpg

But Rogers can't enjoy of it for a long time. Andreas Klöden, GC's number 3, is a lot faster and sets the new best time at 57'04.
img441.imageshack.us/img441/8766/10klden.jpg

The surprise of the Mont Ventoux, David Moncoutié, isn't a good timetrialist and only wants to minimize the loss, so he can have a chance of getting a GC-top 3 this Dauphiné. He rides the 40th time in 1h00'27.
img864.imageshack.us/img864/9876/11moncouti.jpg

The last to start is Alberto Contador. Contador passes Moncoutié already half way the route and gets the second win in a row: 56'41.
