Qatar Optics - Duvel 2021: Story Completed
The Rider

STAGE 3: Castries - Bezieres 150 KM

Stage Favourites:
***Boasson Hagen(DEJ) **Kittel(EUS) *Matthews(LAM)

The first sprint finish of this TDF seems likely today.

Al Sulimani sporting the polka dots.

It was some effort to get into the break today. We tried early on with Vandyck but to no avail. No break was established with 100 KM to go.

Allez Yousef!

Prades and the Belarussian champ, Matouskin, attacked and we saw this as our opportunity to go. We sent Yousef Al Ghanim up the road and he joined up to make the three man break of the day. Great aggressive riding by the team.

The final sprint.

The break was not, and never looked like, it would succeed today. Lampre with Swift leading out Matthews have the dominant sprint train here.

Ain't no stopping Kittel.

Kittel shows that he is the fastest of the sprinters and takes an easy looking win to wrap up the first sprint stage. Al Sulimani retains the polka dots.

Lost in Langkawi (Post #87)

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/adad_zps3583a2dc.jpg

When training for the tour of Langkawi the disappearance of Abdulatif Al Zaid really did put a cat amongst the pigeons. Having been lost in the forest, where he spent days living off berries, we wondered if we would ever find him. We were relived when he turned up even though he missed the start line for the tour of Langkawi! This was one of the first experiences of finding out about Abdulatif's unique persona.

First off, what a wonderful way to retell some of the events during Qatar Optics run. Smile

Second, is the ASO insane cutting out the riders because of a freaking train? 4 Qataris already lost on the second day. Frown

On the bright side, Al Sulimani is riding fantastic so far!

STAGE 4: Narbonne - L'Escala 163 KM

Another flat stage beckons.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/1_zps02bcf1d9.jpg

3/3 breaks.

It took some doing but we managed to get Vandyck into the break today. That means we are one of just three teams to make every break so far.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/2_zpsc0350733.jpg

Watch where you are standing!

With the break wrapped up, a crash takes out many towards the rear of the peloton including the Polka dots of Al Sulimani. If that wasn't enough an FDJ rider steps where it hurts!

Late attacks on the flat by Puccio, Stanard and Froome (of all people!) come to nothing as Lampre leads us towards the finish.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/3_zps611ee097.jpg

An easy win for Matthews!

After a terrific leadout from Swift, which distanced the rest of the field, Matthews was never going to lose from such a position. Lampre have the dominant sprint train here, but Kittel is arguably the fastest. Having a world class leadout man was the decider today.

Flashback #4:

A Big Step Up (POST #196)

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/1_zps402fe067.jpg

Before we knew it we were into our second season, we were into 2018. Thanks to an optimistic sheik we had the finances to invest in the squad which we certainly did. We were even invited to the TDU. In illustrious company Jose Joaquin Rojas finished 4th on stage 1 and stage 2 showing glimpses of what was to come for a team on the up.

@ sutty - But what they were doing there is anyone's guess! Wink

@ Shonak - That stage was a huge rollercoaster of emotions. Wink I do like the flashback concept to. Smile

Ahmed Al Ghanim seems to be enjoying the race so far Wink

Shonak
Man, too bad for Al Sulimani. Sad But it's good he finished the stage. The gap allows him at least to continue looking for breaks, stage wins and KoMs.
A very hectic, eventful Tour start for the team. Lots of bad, bit of good. Hopefully the tide will turn soon. Wink

STAGE 5: Tossa del Mar - Manresa 142 KM

Stage Favourites:
***Kittel(EUS) **Guardini(YTE) *Matthews(FAR)

The final sprinters stage, for a while, before we hit the mountains. Some hills towards the end may through up a surprise.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/1_zpsab091439.jpg

Vandyck suffers like a dog.

After being out in the break yesterday Vandyck was really suffering today. However, we still managed to make the break. For us that is just fantastic.

I don't think he could manage even one turn on the front of the break, but still to make it shows our aggressive intentions.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/2_zpsd6ce8b32.jpg

No one is surprised to see that Vandyck is the first to be dropped today. But that doesn't bother us. We have made 4/4 breakaways so far at this TDF.

The slight hilly terrain doesn't favour the break and we are together for the sprint.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/3_zpsfff4d1c1.jpg

Boasson Hagen Hammers Home!

After breaking away with Matthews with some 300 meters to go over the last hill Boasson Hagen had enough to take the win. Few are faster when hills and a mass sprint come into play.

Flashback #5:

There or Thereabouts (POST #291)

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/4_zps9ad7560c.jpg

Largely thanks to riders such as JJ Rojas who won races such as the Klasika Primavera we were a strong team for the continental ranks in 2018. However, we were always trailing the likes of FDJ and Farnese Vini and we never looked likely for promotion with no invites to the GTs or big classics.

@ sutty - Al Ghanim to finish in the top 25/ top 20 would be a great achievement. Wink

@ Shonak - He has now held onto the Polka dots for three stages, that is something at least! We will try and get him into the breaks in the coming stages. Smile

sutty68
Hope Vandyck recovers enough and will be ready for tomorrow Smile

duxili
Al Super Ghamin doing fine so far. QO fighting like hell for no results yet.

Like a lot the turtle, giraf, centor etc. And the sepia effect for the flash back is great too !

Keep pushing and sure it will pay

Shonak
Qatar Optics continues to show themselves. The first week is never good for outsider stage wins. Vandynck upfront twice in a row, quite a start for him. He surely needs a personal rest day now though. Grin

STAGE 6: La Vella (Andorra) - Col de la Core 166 KM

Stage Favourites:
***Salas(HLE) **Duarte(EML) *Barton(BGZ)

The first of three consecutive days in the mountains. We star on the Port d'Envalira and end on the col del la Core. Expect some action!

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/1_zps71633c3b.jpg

Hard Luck There!

Believe me, we wanted to get the polka dots of Al Sulimani into the break today, with a lot of KOM points to be had. But luck was and misfortune was against us today. Al Sulimani started well back in the field and therefore was boxed in on the first climb of the day, it was impossible to rise to the head of the bunch. By the time Al Sulimani reached 40 riders back from the head of the peloton a break was already established at over 2'40. There would be no break for us today.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/2_zps04f0f7ca.jpg

Dekker!

Thomas Dekker, the veteran, was the beneficiary of our bad luck, he would summit many of the KOM points first and as a result would be in the polka dots at the end of the stage.

No one threatened the GC, in the break, but the peloton would shut them down. Uchima and Patin would attack across to the head of the race just before the final climb begins.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/3_zps98a52997.jpg

Duarte shows his climbing prowess.

As soon as the final climb starts Fabio Duarte attacks out of the peloton. It is not long before the late attackers are back together. Then we have attacks from Salas and a few of the other big favourites, but they are quickly nullified.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/4_zps8f0e99f3.jpg

Robin Girardin, the revelation of this TDF, riding for the continental team Alstom sets the pace amongst the big favourites group with some 4 KM to go.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/5_zpsbed15cf0.jpg

Ahmed Al Ghanim is dropped.

It was no surprise to see our GC rider distanced on the final climb, he would have his worst day in the tour so far today. However, he would not lose 4'00 on the stage and would maintain a top 20 place, a position from which he can build.

Towards the top Salas, Duarte and Barton break away. Much of the final 1.5 KM sees Girardin try to bring the trio back but the gap pegs at '15.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/6_zps3318ee65.jpg

Super Salas!

The trio's escape pays off and GC favourite Ibai Salas takes the stage win, in a nail biting finish, and moves within just '6 of the GC lead with the Col du Tourmalet coming tomorrow. This is building up to some close-run TDF.

It seems we burnt out Vandyck on the two previous stages. Our Belgian TT champion retires today , due to heavy fatigue, so we are down to four riders.

Flashback #6:

Good Vibrations (POST #351)

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/24425_zpsed871ed9.jpg

I was at my happiest period as 2018 was drawing to a close for two reasons. One being the birth of Jelle Sun on the 3rd of September, the second being the excitement about the prospect of 2019 after signing the likes of Felline, Gilbert, Roche and VDB.

@ sutty - Nope. He is out now! Wink

@ Shonak - I am not sure. We held the polka dots + Al Ghanim is holding a top 20 place in GC, not bad for many peoples' worst ever TDF team!' Wink

@ duxili - Not as good as that JellyBelly banner I did waay back! Who knows Al Ghanim may be allowed to get into a break down the lines. Smile

STAGE 7: Saint Girons - Bareges 173 KM

Stage Favourites:
***Salas(HLE) **Duarte(EML) *Eijssen(HLE)

Without doubt the key moment of stage 7 is ascent of the Tourmalet. The legendary climb tops off with 11 KM to go before a descent to the finish.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/2_zps159502f3.jpg

Belgian champ, Ghyselinck, tries to get into the break.

It required some effort to get into the break today. Many riders wanted the honour of making the break on this stage as a result we didn't have a break with 130 KM to go.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/3_zpsdc1a6b40.jpg

However, two riders were allowed to get away and we would make the move! 5 breaks for us now, more than any other team. Yousef Al Ghanim got into his second break of this TDF, what a great first season in the pro ranks for him. He was joined by the Italian champ, Simone Ponzi.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/4_zps8b7962b4.jpg

Attacks start from the big names early on.

We aren't anywhere near the Tourmalet when Gesink and Uchima catch the two escapees with a late attack, but even this move quickly comes to nothing.

We reach the Tourmalet!

Immediately, Barton's teammate, Patin puts in an attack and he is shadowed by the yellow jersey van Garderen and a former Qatar Optics rider, Pizzaballa. But this move quickly fades into insignificance.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/5_zpsbd91faab.jpg

Salas is the next to put in an attack.

But the attack from the Spaniard is not as strong as many would have predicted, he is certainly not as dominant as many would predict he might be. With some 6 KM to go on the Tourmalet all of the favourites are pretty much together including Ahmed Al Ghanim.

The one notable absence is former TDF winner Eijssen who crashes and would lose over 30 places in the rankings today.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/6_zps54c0e228.jpg

Barton and Jeannesson put in a big attack.

The American and the veteran Frenchman are the next to put in a big attack which really decimates the field. It is an attack which destroys the weaker riders and catches some off guard. Salas, is the big loser from this move, he watches as Girardin goes off in chase.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/7_zps47385443.jpg

Barton crests the Tourmalet first.

He edges out Jeannesson at the top. Only '15 seconds behind are Salas and Girardin, who would make it back on the descent. At this point, although riding well, van Garderen is well dropped and will lose the yellow jersey today after a brilliant tenure in the lead.

Ahmed Al Ghanim comes over the top in a group with Rigoberto Uran just 3'50 down on the leaders, not bad going.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/8_zps2b5a0562.jpg

The fast decent quickly leads the four men of this tour to an impending stage finish. Jeannesson, having won multiple sprints from depleted GC groups in the past in le tour, must have fancied his chances because he started his sprint from a long way out....

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/9_zpsf9d40d4f.jpg

Jeannesson would take the win!

The Frenchman showed his grit today by holding off three very capable riders after a long effort. Van Garderen does lose the yellow today to the race favourite Salas. But all is not over by any means. The top three are separated by just '15, what a tour!

Ahmed Al Ghanim moves up two positions in the GC to 17th after a great ride, which saw him descend the Tourmalet '30 quicker than the GC group.

Robin ' The Revelation' Girardin:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/1_zpsbb0e6d4d.jpg

With no major results before, a 6th place in Oman and a 3rd place in the Dauphine this year, few would have expected Robin Girardin to be contesting for the GC in this TDF. He is now the top French hope for a third consecutive French tour win. The tour sure does throw up surprises.

Flashback #7:

Off to a great start
(POST #372)

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/bt_zps57009062.jpg

2019 was off to a great start for the team. Kritskiy won the Chrono des Nations by '1 and we had racked up a hatful of wins by the beginning of spring with wins in the Algarve and Sur Ardeche by Feillu and multiple wins in Langkawi by the emerging Samet Yildiz. We felt very confident about achieving our goal of promotion to the WT.

@ atlanta - It is a great climb. Wink Wasn't a bad stage for us with Ahmed Al Ghanim limiting his loses.

@ sutty - Maybe, but he done us proud. Smile

Shonak
Quite some stages there in the mountains. Although QO is down to 4 riders, they still manage to show themselves. Imagine if there's only Al Sulimani left at the end and he wins a stage? Grin
Fight for GC close as ever. There are no easily won TdF wins here. Wink

Hopefully Ahmed Al Ghanim can break in to that top ten on the GC Smile

How poor France has turned : ketchup bootle on the road, mexican guy along the way and a medieval postman carrying his letters by food. So ridiculous even for 2020 standards Sad

Good we still have great cycling riders able to collect great wins Grin

Oh and nice job for Qatar Optics to join the break once more...

STAGE 8: Bagneres de Bigorre - Oloron Sainte Marie 165 KM

Stage Favourites:
***Salas(HLE) **Gautier(YTE) *Duarte(EML)

A mountain stage, yes. The third consecutive one, yes. But, and it is a big but, the last of the 'medium mountains' comes with over 43 KM to go. A large group of favourites should come to the finish together.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/1_zps80e33ff8.jpg

Star Studded Herbalife

Herbalife set about defending the yellow jersey. They have world champ, van der Sande, and the French champ, Pere, setting pace not to forget the former TDF winner Eijssen helping out. Some Squad indeed.

A two man break getaway today, but never threaten. They reach a max advantage of around 1'30 and find it seemingly impossible to extend this gap. Dekker attacks out of the peloton to mop up KOM points, he would be back in that competition lead at the end of the stage.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/2_zps2fdd77dd.jpg

Duran puts in a big attack.

Our former rider attacks, once the original break is caught, on the final climb with some 50 KM to go, veteran Gio Visconti tries to go with this move, but thinks better of it. The Spaniard is allowed to go on, no one has any interest in closing him down and his gap soon grows out.

Ahmed Al Ghanim puts in a small attack with 12 KM to go, but as the peloton quickly accelerated he withdrew to the safety of the peloton. Keeping his powder dry for another day.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/3_zpsf2f9676f.jpg

Duran takes the win.

The Spaniard, who finished on the podium in two GTs for Qatar Optics last season, takes another GT win. He has now won 3 stages in each of the GTs. Some record for one of the most decorated stage racers in history not to win a GT. John Deere couldn't have dreamed for such a bountiful tour.

Gautier leads the peloton home, notably Boasson Hagen finishes highly in addition to taking some points at the intermediate split and therefore has a commanding lead in the points competition.

Flashback #8:

We Have Made It (POST #431)

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/VV_zps52b74ed4.jpg

Despite only being a continental team we soon shot up to star team status thanks to one big result. A huge result. March 2019 saw Fabio Felline win Milan - San Remo in fantastic style. This result ensured we completed our first goal of winning a classic and announced to the world 'Qatar Optics are here to stay'.

@ duxili - That is what happens when you let anyone into the country for le tour. At least France still have a shot at the GC. Wink

@ sutty - That is too optimistic, even for you. Wink ( No all the guys above Ahmed are at the very least + 3 in mountain ahead of him, barring one or two riders.)

@ Shonak - I'm sure at least one of our guys will get to the finish! Wink

Nice to see Duran performing still well. Could have used his climbing power today but Qatar Optics can hopefully look forward to some well suited breakaway stages now. Smile
