Vuelta a España
Stage 16: Villadiego – Burgos (ITT)
Spoiler Sorry about the lack of stage profile, but it was a completely flat TT about 45 km long.
This is the day everyone of the GC-riders have feared from the start. A flat TT would normally hurt everyone in the GC, so the big question is how the overall will be affected today.
Already before the first intermediate time Cancellara catches the first rider. He looks ready to defend his rainbow stripes later this month!
Or will he. Westra is faster than him on both intermediates and even 33 seconds faster in goal.
Nicholas Roche is the best time-trialist inside the top-10, but only time will tell how much he can win today.
Provisional best time is certainly a good start for the Irishman!
I think it’s safe to say that this is the most important TT Chris has ever had to ride.
A provisional 24th is okay for him. Now it’s only left to wait for Purito and Antón to finish.
Unfortunately he loses 9 seconds to Rodríguez and 36 seconds to Antón while Vanendert is further distanced. Still we gained a little time on Euskaltel in the team classifications and Willy won a good bit of time on Landa in the youth competition. We still need a bad day from the young Spaniard to take the jersey though…

Stage 17: Burgos – Valladolid
A quiet day for the GC guys. The sprinters will be looking for this rare chance for them, but will they be fresh enough to catch the break?
Veikkanen and Haavardsholm went in the early break for us chasing a potential stage win and some time for the team classification. With 100 km to go the break has 7’30’’ to the peloton.
With 30 km to go the gap has been brought down to 2’30’’
Looks like Rabobank and Vodafone have things under control.
With 15km to go and only a minute to the peloton Jussi and Ole attack and are followed by Cancellara and Vande Velde.
Jussi burns all his energy on the first attack and with 7 km to go Cancellara, Haavardsholm and Vande Velde has 38 seconds to Veikkanen, a further 47 seconds to the rest of the breakaway and 47 seconds more to the peloton. They might actually make it!
Cancellara is first to start sprinting.
Fabian is just immensely strong but this is the career highlight for this yung Norwegian nonetheless!
This bodes well for his next season on Øster Hus – Ridley.

Roche winning a ITT
And nice 2nd place

sutty: They did. Just to bad someone else keeps being the strongest in our breaks
Chris will have to fight for every second as Roche just keeps getting stronger and stronger it seems. It could be very close in the end...
PMC rulezz: I know... Really didn't expect Haavardsholm to be the strongest of the two, but I guess a GT-stage 2nd is his way of saying godbay to the WT
Ian: In all fairness Cancellara has around 90 race days and Roche has 50-something and probably a fitness around 98 or something like that. Unfortunately.

Vuelta a España
Stage 18: Carbonera el Major – La Granja
The first of two relatively easy mountin stages and as such a day for Nicki to consolidate his jersey, while keeping an eyeon the stage win.
Another one of those stages where practically everyone wants in the break thus eliminating every single berakaway attempt for the first 60 km.
On the first climb Nicki gets away with Cort, Duggan, Hooglerland and Barredo.
Only Duggan want to be part of a longer break, so when Nicki leads over the second climb the break has been reduced to a trio with a gap of 3’46’’
On the final climb Nicki thanks Magnus for his help and allows him to chase the stage win by himself. Duggan is also looking strong as he joins in on the attack.
2’30’’ behind the favourites have started moving.
Chris is having a terrible day today and is really struggling to keep up with Rodríguez and Roche.
On the final 10 km Chris is giving everything to try and minimize his losses.
It’s a good help when he catches up with Cort, who have now been passed by Antón, Rodríguez and Roche.
In many ways this was the worst stage this far for the team.

Stage 19: Villar de Corneja – Avila
Thomas Riis decides to join in in the attacking and gets away along with 12 other riders with no chance in the mountain classifications. A perfect situation for us!
The break holds 7’13’’ over the biggest mountain of the day. With 50 km to go and another mountain in the way anything can happen.
We had planned to attack from the peloton early on the last climb, but Antón beats us to it...
With 8,5 km to goal the break is back in one pice after several breakaway attempts. 3 minutes behind them a group with Antón, Roche, Chris and Willy and a further 40 seconds behind a large group containing among others Rodríguez.
1 km to go for the break. Thomas is well placed, but tired. Hopefully the others will be marked as well…
Riis pulls of a nice 3rd place while the favourites finish in a big group.

Roche is coming hope you can hold him off

Miguel: He will have to give it everything on the final Mountain TT to kep the podium, but it certainly is the goal!
mowinckel91: Thanks
sutty: Yeah, Roche is looking very strong at this point and considering his strong TT a few stages ago he could be very dangerous...
Jakstar: You will know later today (or in your case more like tomorrow)

Vuelta a España
Stage 20: El Escorial – Puerto de Abandos
13 km of Mountain TT’ing to determine the last details in the GC. Certainly better for Chris than a flat TT, but 24 seconds to Roche is probably a little bit less than what we could have hoped for.
Willy crowns a great Vuelta with provisional best on the TT with Cort on provisional 5th.
Roche is looking terribly strong today setting best intermediate time. Chris loses 28 seconds on the Irishman halfway up the mountain, but a lot can still happen with 6,6 km of mountain still left.
And there it is – the finish line. Roche has best time, but Chris has upped the effort on the last bit. Will it be enough?
YES! 17 seconds slower than Roche just keeps Chris on the podium!!
As usual when there’s a mountain involved Antón is untouchable…

Stage 21: Alcobendas – Madrid
Expected to be a bunch sprint, we stilhave to keep awake. The hills in the end could hold surprises and with Roche only 16 seconds behind we have to keep a close eye on him. Everyone, who has the legs should feel free to chase breakaways today.
It’s an emotional day for Kjell as he rides the last GT-stage of his career and he uses the opportunity to give it his last bit of energy. The first try is reeled back in by Euskaltel though. Guess 15 riders were just too many.
60 km to go Kjell has 5’10’’ to the peloton along with Benitez, Vogondy, Sevilla and Henderson.
He even manages to put in the last attack from the break.
6 km to go. Cancellara has attacked out of the pack and now forms a front duo with team mate Henderson.
One way to avoid surprises is to make them yourself. Going under the 5 km mark Cort attacks with Chris in his wheel.
He is first into the last three km, but doesn’t achieve much more than that.
In the end a fairly easy stage win for Cavendish.
In the final sprint Rodríguez crashes 100 m before the finish line and stays on the tarmac for a little while.
What a tragic way to lose a spot on the podium!

What a race for us!
A 2nd place in the GC albeit on a rather tragic background, the mountain jersey, team classification and WIlly really starting to grow into the rider we know he will be with a 15th place.
Put on top of that our stage win and several other strong performances by the entire team. The guys really outdid themselves here!

Although not the way he would have liked to have done it |

SSJ2Luigi: In deed, almost felt bad for him even though it's just a game...
Ian: 1. Much more than we had expected before the race!
2. Guess that's where the IRL-rule about late-stage crashes really proves its validity. Really tragic to lose a GT-podium with 100 m to go of the race. Probably his last chance as well?
3. Must be something with the name - he really is one of the most promising young stage racers out there
sutty: Couldn't quite figure out whether or not to be happy when I saw how much time he would lose...
dienblad: He really deserved the podium, but so did Purito. Could very well be the last chance to get a GT-podium for the both of them...

Is there no "3km rule" in PCM?
9 minutes between the numbers 1 and 2 in GC but good to see chris is still 2nd
Winners never quit, quitters never win.
