SotD - There is basically zero chance for it to happen ...
Blythe crowned 'King of the North'
Blythe wins the 2020 Paris - Roubaix
It started with an april fool and ended with a triumph like no other: Adam Blythe claimed victory in the famous velodrome. After grueling 254 km of racing and 29 section of cobblestones he won a sprint of 10 against the strongest competition including racing legend Sam Bewley, 2020 dominator Danny Summerhill, defending champion Lukasz Wisniowski and sprinter Joeri Stallaert. With all those big names in the group, everyone was caught off-guard when Blythe started the sprint early and couldnt close the gap in the remainder of the final lap.
Evonik - ELKO has now won three of the five monuments after Michael Van Stayen won Milano San Remo in 2017 and Ronde Van Vlaanderen in 2018. The team is known for their focus on classics and will be trying to win the remaining two monuments in the next few seasons. |

| Episode II: Adam Blythe and Paris - Roubaix|
First Name: | Adam | Last Name: | Blythe | Nationality: | British | Seasons with the team: | 2019, 2020 | Age when joining: | 30 | Key Stats: | 82CB, 76SP |
Blythe started his career as part of the British National Team that was invited to a couple of continental tour races. There he rode very anonymously to results outside the top 100. His best result came when he outsprinted teammate Luke Rowe to a 105th place in the 2008 Milano - Torino.
Despite the poor results, legendary manager SportingNonsense saw the talent in him and gave him a contract for his british CT team Procycling - BBC that would later be known as Eritel - Sonatrach. He quickly improved and even finished twice on the podium. Once on the opening Tour of Belgium stage and once in the Cougar Mountain Classic which as the name suggest is a hilly cobbled classic.
2010 was when Blythe really made a name for himself. Still riding for SNs team - now called 100% Me - he finished in the top 10 of lots of cobbled classics in the CT: Tour of Belgium, Tour du Faso, GP Herning, Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne, East Midlands Cicle Classic, E3 Prijs, Abergavenny Criterium International, Halle - Ingooigem and Scheldeprijs. He also made his PT debut due to wildcards and finished 9th in the Monte Paschi Eroica and most notably 5th in his first attempt at the Hell of the North.
Paris - Roubaix 2010: Blythe, Cancellara and Nolf are chasing Tom Boonen
Blythe would return for the 2011 Paris - Roubaix edition on a wildcard again where he would finish 10th. But 2011 was also the season where he finally ended a race with his first professional victory after finishing on the podium again and again and again. He won the opening stage of the Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde and would later add further results wins when his stage win in the Tour du Faso helped him to also win the general classification of the traditional cobbled stage race in the continental tour.
Journey through the Pro Tour
After not being invited to Paris - Roubaix in 2012 and having outgrown the CT, Blythe signed with rjc_43's Wiggle Professional Cycling Team to be a full-time PT rider in 2013 and would stay with team later called "Good Energy" for the next three seasons and would lead the team in Paris - Roubaix every year. In 2013, Blythe rode a good race where he stayed long in a group featuring Boonen, Cancellara aand Summerhill but seemed to hit a wall with 15km to go and had to be satisfied with a 11th place while his former companions finished 2nd to 4th behind Sam Bewley who could celebrate his first Paris - Roubaix victory.
He could improve on that result in 2014, when he finished 7th after winning a small group sprint vs Vanspeybrouck, Nolf and Summerhill. The quartett had raced together for a long period of time - basically ever since Bewley started his succesful long solo from 55km out and the pursuit groups splittered into lots of subgroups.
Adam Blythe and Tom Boonen are side-by-side caught behind a split in 2015 Paris - Roubaix
In 2015, Blythe and Evonik crossed roads for the first time. In the 2015 edition that Evonik raced as a wildcard, Blythe and Evonik leader Tom Boonen were caught behind in an early split together with other strong leaders. Thanks to hard work of Cancellara, the group returned to the rest of the favourites. While Boonen was the only one to succesfully follow Bewley until shortly before the velodrome and therefore finished 2nd, Blythe stayed calmly inside the chase group, saving energy and outsprinting everyone but Roger Kluge to finish 4th which was a personal best for him.
After the season, his team disbanded so Blythe moved towards Team Puma - SAP where he got the closest to a Roubaix victory. The leading group of Bewley, Burghardt, Van Avermaet and Senechal played a bit too much tactics with each other, allowing the chase group consisting of Blythe, Vanspeybrouck, Nolf and Vanmarcke to return already inside the Velodrome. While Evonik's Van Avermaet and Bewley edged it out in basically a photo finish with the better ending for the Kiwi, Blythe could beat his former companions as well as Burghardt to finish 4th again. It was the first time in his career that he finished with the same time as the Roubaix winner. He would repeat that in 2017 but ended up disappointed as he finished 12th out of a 13-men mass sprint for the finish behind renowned sprinter Nikolas Maes as Bewley, Senechal and Van Avermaet sprinted on the top spots.
After spending the 2018 season in PCT with Iberia - Team Degenkolb, he replaced Greg van Avermaet as Evonik leader on the cobblestones for the 2019 season. Following a strong showing where he possibly spent too much energy catching back up with the favourites after a puncture inside the last 70km. Whether that impacted him to not being able to follow the deciding attack by Summerhill, Wisniowski, Teunissen and Van Avermaet is obviously unclear, but the end result was a 7th place which marked down the worst result that Evonik had ever gotten in Paris - Roubaix after two 2nd places, one 3rd place and one 4th place.
In 2020 he would return to the Velodrome inside a 10-men leading group and the rest is history.

A very nice summary, showcasing both sides of the coin that we flipped with him in the two years we could afford to employ him.
In 2018, we couldn't keep all of a maxing Herklotz, a trained Demare and Blythe, so I had to cut him.
Although in return I managed to get Ganna and Cavagna that transfer season and trained Demare further, so eventually that tradeoff should even out in terms of scoring potential.
In his first Roubaix for us, Blythe really showed what he was capable of, with that great ride to nearly make the podium, but his second showing really was puzzling.
I'm very happy he managed to grab a cobblestone once in his career after all, skipping all the other podium spots on his way there. Congrats!

shonak - Thank! "Fine win" is a big understatement. I'm quite happy about the history Evonik is building
Fabianski - Thanks again! I was really curious how well he did in previous years as he had great stats for longer than im part of the game and i remembered him as a consistent rider who i rarely saw winning anywhere. It quickly developed into this piece and I'm glad that you liked it.
Reminds me that i probably should give credits to Aquarius for his All-time win list, SN for a great list of Blythe results in an old HQ and whoever updated the Teams archive and profile threads. All of which helped a lot with the post.
redordead - For sure. Great season so far, already outscoring his 2019 season total this early
cio - I can imagine that the decision to go with Demare and Herklotz over Blythe wasnt too hard. Especially as you could need some training budget for Demare to annoy me further
I could be in a similar situation after the season as Lopez might want some training and will likely demand a higher wage and Eislers is maxing so a sale could balance my cash and cap calculations. But Blythe is making the decision hard right now
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Interested to see how MAL and Skujins work together this time. Either way it should be a strong month for you regardless

Fully agree. I have big expectations for the month. I feel like my team is very strong for every single one of the races - both in terms of leaders and support depth. The first outings with both hilly leaders together havent been too strong but i still have hopes that they can be a very strong duo in actual racing too and not just on paper.
Gotta say im most curious about the Vuelta though. On paper i love my lineup there with good stage hunter potential for every non-TT stage. But sending Skujins there is a huge risk when otherwise relatively save points would have waited in far fewer RDs in Scandinavia. Im banking on the fact that i dont expect many top puncheurs there and that the leader jersey looks a very realistic target but if we get the same break madness from the Giro, it can ruin that race very quickly for me. |

I'd love that but i would also be alright with Skujins channeling his inner Alaphilippe for this
I usually prefer the week of cobbles but I wont complain if Ardennes will be equally as succesful than those - at least the week started nicely already |

- Two (potential) Top 10 GT stage racers headline us
- The combination of the short walls on stage two and lots of TT km might benefit us
- Lack of mountain support due to Suisse clash
- Dzamastagic returns where he won a stage last year
- 2019: 3 Evonik stage wins
- Liepins as designated main sprinter |

Hype for the home race
But otherwise too, and as always, the clashes usually work out well for Evonik and that might be the case again in Suisse and Dauphine this time.

Too bad you didn’t pick an all-Latvian setup for Switzerland. That would have been cool :-)
Next season one of those two GC races look perfect for an all-Greek setup :-)

Looks like you're gonna beat us to last place in the TTT again

Abhi - The last few years, the Dauphine / Suisse clash has been surprisingly good for us. This year's lineups might be some of the stronger ones I've sent to these races and for the first time I might have a very realistic shot at a top 10 GC result here too. So i hope you are right
SotD - Thought about that too but with the additional Riga / Suisse clash, this was a tough clash to plan for me - much tougher to plan than the triple header actually. Without Riga, this could have easily been an all-Latvian lineup but i didnt want to go without Neilands and Becis in Riga. Not sending a single Latvian to the home race would have been a weird RP decision as well
Redordead - Thats the goal

If I report on any of those races I'll be sure to upload it around the Vuelta schedule time, so your last hour at work can be a bit more entertaining Good luck!

I'm glad that we have enough reporters, having a scheduled posting time is just a nice bonus. But it's cool when you know when to start F5ing for the reports. So i'd appreciate it

- Arguably the strongest Evonik GT lineup ever
- Chiarello as our GC leader: Can we finish all 3 GTs in the top 10?
- Van Stayen as our sprint leader
- Becis / Dzamastagic as a leadout duo that can survive hills well
- Very important that our flat support can climb at least somewhat solidly
- Both U25 climbers are very solid on flat roads to help set up sprints
- Goal: dominate points classification, stage wins, top 10-15 GC

- Risky planning:
- Lopez as GC leader, hoping for selections on both hilly stages
- Tvetcov as co-leader
- Liepins here despite awful TT skills: Possible weak startlist for stage 3
- Outside of Liepins: Maximizing pace making potential with flat powerhouses Dzamastagic and Stoltz as well as climbers/puncheurs
- Aim: Ride aggressive
- one of the best TTT setups we ever sent to a non-cobbled TTT
