After a huge upset in the first stage, when the breakaway was actually able to survive and grab the stage win, things returned to normal in the next stage when Jasper Philipsen, the strongest sprinter in the race, took home the bacon.
The Belgian was not able to capitalize his speed in the next two stages though, which had some more difficult terrain. It was Jumbo's Wout Van Aert who clung the last two stages and the overall as well, to claim his second overall win in a stage race this year after the Tour of Norway.
Van Aert proving himself to be so much more than just a classics rider

Pauwels will keep the polka dots jersey for another stage, but with Pardilla grabbing a few more points than him today, they are now actually tied at the top of the rankings!
Despite the awful weather on the Angliru, there was no way the favorites would let the breakaway have their say in today's stage. The first move on the mythical climb was made by Ilnur Zakarin. Even though he stayed in front for a few kilometers, he never actually got a big advantage and was eventually caught. A courageous attempt nonetheless.
George Bennett has been enjoying the Vuelta so far, sitting in second place in the overall rankings, but that will probably change after today as he is struggling to keep up with the rest of the favorites halfway through the climb
On the opposite side of feelings today we have, Nairo Quintana, who put in a fantastic attack after some brilliant work in thinning out the group by his team - mate, Richard Carapaz
Only rider able to respond to that acceleration was his compatriot, Miguel Angel Lopez. Froome was not having his best day, but he was in his classic damage control mood
Quintana had one final acceleration left in him which he used perfectly in the last kilometer to fly past Lopez and get the win in perhaps the biggest stage in this year's Vuelta!

Let's take advantage of the first rest day in La Vuelta to have a look at what are the biggest transfers for the next season in the World of Cycling as well as the retirements that have been announced in the World Tour.
Tony Martin, Floris De Tier and Paul Martens have been confirmed to be leaving Jumbo at the end of the season, with the first two already having secured a contract for 2020. Six new riders will be joining Jumbo in 2020.

Both Pardilla and Pauwels weren't present in the breakaway today. Pauwels managed to grab 2 more points than Pardilla, which sees him keep the jersey for another day, but the fight is far from being decided.
Despite a profile that looked perfect for them, the breakaway was not strong enough to make it until the end, which saw the stage win being settled between the GC riders.
As we approached the top of the last categorized climb of the day, after being set up perfectly by Antwan Tolhoek, George Bennett managed to get a gap to the others
The Kiwi champion managed to not only defend his lead on the downhill, but also extend it a bit, which saw him crossing the finish line in a very comfortable position as he celebrates his first Grand Tour win! Bennett will also move a place up in the GC, with Nibali having an off day

Pardilla and Pauwels once again responded to their daily duty of being in the breakaway. But due to a rather strong group today, Pauwels did not manage to score any points. Pardilla was able to snatch 12 points though, which see him moving at the top of the KoM rankings for now
Ineos were not very interesting in chasing down the breakaway and it was clear far from the stage finish that the escapees will decide today's stage between themselves. It wasn't much of a dispute though as UAE's Dan Martin proved to be a head above his fellow escapes as he enjoyed a solo win in the hot sun at the top of Sierra Nevada
Not chasing after the breakaway allowed Ineos to put a very strong defensive for Froome on the last climb. And while many expected the Colombian duo of Quintana and Lopez to make up some time on the Brit today, it was actually Froome who came up on top of anybody else finishing 23 seconds ahead of a group containing Yates, Quintana, Buchmann, Bennett, Zakarin, Woods and Lopez.

Eventually you ran out of things that you can do inside
Figured it would be quite fun to start playing again given the current conditions with all the sports on hold.
I had played these two stages back in the summer when the story stopped and had the replays saved, but I have already played a few more right now that will be posted shortly as well.

With such an inviting profile for a breakaway, we had a very large group of escapees, but with many of them unwilling to co-operate the breakaway was reeled back in midway through the last climb of the day.
One rider had managed to survive without being caught though - Antwan Tolhoek. The young Dutch rider had one minute in front of the pack at the top of the climb. He gave everything he had to get that gap though and he found himself in trouble on the downhill, leading to a dramatic end to his adventure as he was caught inside the last two kilometers
It was once again the GC riders who would settle out the stage win between themselves with one last punch as the last two kilometer have a rather interesting incline.
It was Miguel Angel Lopez who proved to be the fastest, even putting a few seconds between himself and the others as he extend his lead in the points classification, which seems to be very much in his bag at this point

After quite a few stage in the mountains, the sprinters finally get back into action and there was no way the sprinter teams would let such an opportunity get away from them.
Sunweb and Jumbo dominated the sprint, but neither Matthews nor Van Poppel proved to be strong enough to actually contest for the stage win today
It was the French Champion, Christophe Laporte, who actually brought home the bacon, despite a very late and well thought bike throw by Fabio Jakobsen.

It looks like every single one of the sprinters is content with what they have achieved so far as today they will be missing out on a stage specifically designed for them. A breakaway of four will settle the stage win between themselves as the pack refused to fight back today.
Sep Vanmarcke was the biggest name out of the four, but despite a late attack he was not able to put a Grand Tour win next to his name. It was instead Caja Rural's Jon Aberasturi, the best sprinter of the group, who crossed the finish line first.
Both Aberasturi and Vanmarcke also finished on the podium in the 8th stage when the Spaniard was denied the stage win by Rémy Mertz after another successful breakaway. Garikoitz Bravo Oiarbide who finished second today was part of that breakaway as well.

| | | | | | | C. Froome | | M. A. Lopez | | S. Pardilla | | M. A. Lopez |
Pardilla managed to add a few more points to his tally today, but by the end of the day it won't be Pauwels who he will have to worry about now, as by the end of the day both Daniel Martinez and Dan Martin have very much entered the race for the KoM as well.
Steven Kruijswijk went into the breakaway today, but he was not able to follow the best climbers of the group as Simon Yates, Dan Martin and Daniel Martinez tore the race apart on the 1st category climbs trio.
Dan Martin would once again claim a solo stage win in this year's Vuelta, with Martinez taking second place behind him once more as well. The Colombian will also move second in the KoM rankings, just 2 points shy of Pardilla's first place
In the favorites group we had a very interesting battle for the second place as Nairo Quintana struggled to follow the pace of Lopez and Froome, with the Astana rider moving now into second place overall in front of his compatriot
Sending Kruijswijk in the breakaway proved to be a very bad move as Bennett found himself isolated for a good part in the second half of the race. In the final kilometers of the stage, the Kiwi struggled to keep the pace of the other favorites and Kruijswijk provided very little help. Bennett will keep fourth place for now, but the task to defend it will be far from easy, while the gap to the podium is now huge.

Things didn't look good for Bennett in the previous stage and after today's rather poor performance, he will slip even further down the rankings, finishing more than 2 minutes behind the stage winner
Miguel Angel Lopez was flying today and after setting the best time at all intermediate check points, he did the same thing at the finish line to claim another stage win this Vuelta. The Colombian seems to have settled in second place now and a lead of 48 points in the green jersey classification
Froome will keep his jersey and a lead of over one minute at the end of the stage, but losing 46 seconds to Lopez today is clearly not ideal and it won't easy to keep the Colombian behind in the last stages of the race

No changes in the KoM battle today, except maybe for a good amount of points gained by Ben O'Connor who could potentially join the battle as well in the closing stages of the race. Richie Porte's presence in the day's breakaway also meant it had no chance of reaching the finish line.
Miguel Angel Lopez looked to be in the form of his life at the moment and today he launched an attack with about 10km to go! Bernal and Thomas still being there for Ineos meant that his move was neutralized
This didn't stop the green jersey wearer as he launched yet another one a few kilometers later. Buchmann and Quintana tried to follow him at first but eventually they had to sit back an watch him slipping away
And it was Lopez' third stage win at this Vuelta, which puts him closer than ever to the red jersey! Froome saved face in the last kilometer and managed to join Buchmann and Quintana's group, but his lead to Lopez is now than less than one minute
Bennett enjoyed a good day and even though he managed to overtake Uran in the GC, he will stay in sixth as Buchmann breaks into the top 5 after riding a very impressive stage himself

He's slipping a bit but still a very very good position for GB considering the insane field he finds himself in Let's dig it in and try to keep that top 6 in the next few days!

It was a dreadful day for the KoM jersey wearer, Sergio Pardilla, with Pauwels, Dan Martin and Ben O'Connor all overtaking him in the rankings. The Dimension Data rider will be the new wearer of the jersey starting tomorrow.
No chance for the brekaway to make it to the finish today as the pack rode a very hard race. Lopez and Buchmann seemed determined to go a long way away from the finish line, both of them making moves on the penultimate climb.
Both moves were neutralized by Ineos and Movistar, but it resulted in a very high pacbe set in the favorites group, a pace that George Bennett was not able to follow. Being in trouble so early was a sign that the Jumbo rider will be losing precious time today
On the last climb to Ax 3 Domaines, the favorites were more than happy to ride together though, with only Woods making a clear move and having a gap to the main group inside the last kilometer
It was not meant to be for the Canadian though as Froome sprinted away from the group to take the stage win from him, sending a very clear message to Lopez and all those that were already writing him off: I'm very much alive

No breakaway today but a very strong group of four riders tried a move: Ion Izagirre, Mühlberger, C.F. Hagen and Hamilton. They every caught inside the last 10 kilometers though, which meant the race will be decided by a uphill sprint between what was left from a very thinned pack.
Calmejane, Konrad and Ulissi looked very strong at the foot of the climb and looked they will settle the win between themselves. But as it often is the case in cycling they showed their hand too early and they were swallowed back by the rest of the pack as the finish line was in reach.
It was Xandro Meurisse who claimed a quite surprising victory after an excellent acceleration in the closing meters. Tim Wellens and Patrick Konrad completed the podium.
Two Jumbo riders finished inside the top 10 of the first Canadian classic of the weekend: Sep Kuss (who had abandoned the Vuelta one week earlier due to illness but have since made a full recover) and Wout Van Aert.

Ben O'Connor entered late the fight for the KoM jersey, but he is making the most of it. He is a much stronger climber than those who were in the jersey before him and today he extended his lead, with Dan Martin now second in the classification
Emanuel Buchmann is enjoying a very good third week of racing in Spain and today he was the strongest in the favorites group, attacking and catching what was left of the breakaway of the day at the summit of the last climb of the day. He would be joined on the downhill by Caruso, Zakarin and Simon Yates
Froome didn't look very strong on the climb which allowed Lopez to gain some ground on him, but once we hit the downhill the Ineos rider was in a crazy race to catch up to his younger rival
Buchmann had much fresher legs than those who survived from the breakaway and he had no trouble settling the sprint for the stage win in his favor.
Some rather strange decisions by the jury today though as they decided the distance between some groups was not big enough to actually award them a time gap, which saw Froome being given the same time as Lopez. This did not save Nibali though, who had an awful day and dropped out of the top 10
