Thanks guys. Appreciate the comments and also the silent readers!
Sorry for the silence. Working full time so there's not always time. This weekend I'll definitely make time for San Remo, though! Maybe not today but certainly tomorrow!

Pre-race
I don't think I'll ever be at the start here without that feeling of happiness. Last year I took the victory of a lifetime and I'll be able to enjoy it throughout the rest of my life. But that doesn't mean I'm here for show. We came here with top sprinter Fontana and all-round sprinter Colbrelli, both with good chances of reaching the podium. Depending on the race scenario, I will help them reach the finish line.

The Race
240 km from the finish, a group containing riders like Debusschere, Gerrans, Gilbert and others got caught behind by accident. What followed was an unimaginable spectacle.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr02_zps5cxtzxhj.jpg

The peloton kept a high pace to keep these riders from returning. From 240 km to 180 km to the finish, the pace was relentless. We were all gasping for breath.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr03_zpshw1feaxz.jpg

The high pace came with a price. Riders got tired and when we're tired, mistakes are made. There were several crashes.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr04_zpsfjqyictm.jpg

Our battle plan was set in action with an attack by De Marchi, some 37 km from the finish.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr05_zpsvkb7szsh.jpg

Roelandts joined him and both of them had a nice attack going for a while. On the Cipressa, however, both got caught.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr06_zpszizl1sfz.jpg

And so, heading towards the Poggio, only 50 riders remained in the peloton. By this time, Colbrelli let us know he had wonderful legs, a super day. I then decided to work solely for him. I'd get him over the Poggio as well as possible and keep him at the front so he can focus on his sprint.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr07_zpsvwe74sui.jpg

Then it was Barta's turn to put the pressure on and keep us in the shade.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr08_zpsrlaazred.jpg

He was joined and left behind by Sep Vanmarcke, a bit like I did with him last year. The Belgian really wants a win here and he's prepared to try it the same way as last year. In the final straight line, he still kept a gap.
I had launched Colbrelli as well as possible and he was sprinting like a true master.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr09_zpswmdmfkuj.jpg

Unfortunately, the sprint of his life came only after Vanmarcke was in the clear. The Belgian wins San Remo with a nice attack. I followed him last year and took the win, he did it this year. Next year, I know who I'll be tracking.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/msr10_zps1f6kh8xl.jpg

I finished on a 14th place, not bad. I can't expect to win here just because I did so last year. 14th is decent and with a 2nd place by a team mate, I'm happy about my race. Now I've proven San Remo is really a race for me. It was no lucky shot last year and I can honestly think about coming back here to win again!

And I'll work as hard as I can to make that happen.

Raziz
Antonio seems to love this sort of parcours.

AbhishekLFC
Very good race for Antonio. These solid results should go a long way towards making a name for himself. He already has quite the rep Grin

Ian Butler
Raziz - Yeah, he really has a future in these races. To be honest, I'd be surprised if I'll never win San Remo again with Antonio. He seems tailor made for the race.

AbhishekLFC - He's slowly building a good rep indeed Smile

Gent - Wevelgem
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/gw01_zps2aorryve.jpg

My first real cobbled race, on Belgium soil. I was looking forward to this race, with some nervous anticipation. What would I make of this race?

I couldn't have believed it had someone told me, but I had to find out the hard way. These Flanders roads are something of another dimension. I found myself completely lost in the peloton. Turning roads, small roads, cuts, suddenly big roads with lots of wind, weird concrete slabs with space in between where your wheel can get stuck (I didn't fall once though!). It was Flanders Hell.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/gw02_zpsxwk1vdhu.jpg

I was somewhere in a far behind group, trying to survive the day, while (also 23 years old, contemporary of mine and close friend since we started at Cattelan together) Fontana managed to keep at the front during his first Wevelgem. He would be sprinting for the win and tried to surprise by going from far out!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/gw03_zps2ideviad.jpg

And, by God, he did it! Amazing victory for our team and I'm so happy for him. He's one of the most talented guys in the peloton and this could be his big breakthrough. Some wins in his neopro season in Britain and Italy, but this one could set major things in motion. What a ride by him!

What an experience this was. Perhaps my least favorite day in the saddle since I started cycling. I really didn't care for these roads too much. Maybe Tour of Flanders would be better, but I seriously doubted that.

Ronde Van Vlaanderen
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/gw05_zpskkwqn99f.jpg

Trying to avoid what happened in Wevelgem, I decided to go in the break of the day. That way I'd have some space around me instead of having that nervous peloton.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/gw06_zpszo2h03n3.jpg

Unfortunately for us in the breakaway, Quickstep staged a coup at 140 km from the finish, shattering the entire peloton. Our lead was decreasing quickly.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/gw07_zpsv47dqdkw.jpg

I tried to hang on as long as possible when they passed me. But the pace was high and on the first cobbled section, I had to let them go.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/gw08_zpstpopw8hp.jpg

John Degenkolb took his first Ronde victory in a dominating matter. Great ride by him. I finished almost half an hour later.

Well, that's it for that experiment. I was in Belgium before and liked the real Ardennes much more than there Flemish Ardennes. No, I think I'll pass next time. I already told the team management I want to skip Roubaix (please!) and try to ride a good result in Amstel, Flèche or Liège, provided I start there.

As long as they don't make me start here again, I'll do anything. This is what I'm used to. Goodbye, Flanders, hopefully until never again!

Ciao

Hey!

This short update to bring you some news. Let's start with the least interesting, and that's that I'll most likely be starting in the Amstel Gold Race. I know I can heavily improve on my 68th place last year. Tirreno has given me the confidence I can follow the subtop of the world, even on the hills. I hope I'm not wrong.

And then for the amazing news. Fontana surprised everyone in Paris - Roubaix by finishing 9th. After his win in Gent - Wevelgem, this is another amazing result. It seems he is suited much more to those pesky roads than I am. Maybe one day he'll stand on the top podium there. I certainly hope so.

Cancellara came 73rd in his first Ronde, believe in yourself Antonio Wink and outside the top 40 for two more years... keep at it OK, because 4th-time lucky he came 6th! And he was only doing this all a year younger than Antonio in their respective times Pfft

Great season for Fontana though Grin
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Fabulous Fontana! Very impressive results. Like Jandal I'd say Andolini shouldn't give up on the cobbled classics just yet, maybe he just needs more experience.

jandal7 - Antonio will need lots of convincing, though. With his broad talent and all-round abilities, he can ride for prizes all year round. So he feels he'd be wasting energy riding those cobbles in between Wink

Ripley - Haha yeah, maybe Wevelgem is an exception. Fontana is on fire, yeah.

Ardennes Classics
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/Andolini/l01_zpsf90k66if.jpg

Well, my Ardennes classics can be summarized by that picture alone. Here's what happened, in case you didn't see the races.

Amstel Gold Race: I crashed early in the race. I tried to continue but it was no use, I had to abandon the race with over 150 km to go.

Flèche Wallonne: I crashed early in the race. The rest of the race was an uphill struggle (mostly literally) and I finished barely in the top 100, a 97th place.
By then, the doctor gave me a thorough examination and told me I should skip Liège in order to be safe. He was thinking I might have a virus of some sort and that the falls were just masking my inability to ride properly. Still, Liège was still a few days away so I took two days off the bike and I could still see what was what then.

Liège - Bastogne - Liège: the rest did me a lot of good. I decided to start, if only to ride my first LBL. I had no particuar expectations, but thought it could never hurt to get some experience. I fell midway the race. However, it didn't effect me that much. I had to waste energy to return to the pack but I fought back from position 80 or so to position 20, going from group to group with help from Moscon and Cunego. My 20th finishing position is the silver lining in all this campaign.

So that's the Ardennes for me. Three races, three crashes. First time it was a bit my fault, I admit. The other two were just unavoidable, being in the pack and someone in front of me going down.
I didn't feel good once during these three races, and same goes for Wevelgem and the Ronde. I long to return to Italy, where I feel a thousand times stronger. Maybe Belgium isn't my cup of tea. However, that 20th place in Liège offers possibilities for the future. It's a great race. But, man, I don't like being here too much. Back to sunny Italy for me!

Unfortunately I won't be racing the Giro, where Pozzovivo will finally find out if he can podium the race. I'll try to watch him, though! Meanwhile I'm taking some time off and return to training hard for the second part of the season. I have to start performing better, especially abroad!

Ouch! Better luck next year. And shame Tony wasn't picked for his home GT.

Quite unfortunate results in the Ardennes and Cobbles, but at least San Remo was good. Shame to miss out on the Giro, but it was kinda expected. Now the Tour is something to work towards hopefully Smile

Drama in the Giro!

Big drama in the Giro as our lead man Pozzovivo crashed heavily on a downhill on stage 18. He will be out a long time and some even wonder if he'll able to return to professional cycling. It's a heavy blow for our team as we see a collegue, team mate and most of all a friend in such a nasty accident.

He was standing 4th in the GC, with a real shot at finishing on the podium in Milan. He had won a mountain stage only two days earlier. Let's hope he recovers well and that he may return to professional racing!
