Post Danmark Rundt – Stage 6
Make or break. After a good performance on the previous 5 stages I still have to put in a final and my most crucial effort of this tour. I knew beforehand that if I wanted to win this race then I must do it on this stage and that’s crystal clear today. But the finale is made for me. A short 5-km climb that tops 13 kilometres from the finish and following there are two small lumps before the home stretch.
The early break wasn’t any threat today either as the pack has managed to keep it all together for the finales in this race.
I sticked close to Designa’s Mortensen (in the white jersey) all day as I considered him by biggest opponent for the overall win.
The remaining breakaway riders, Frischkorn and Bongiorno were reeled in with 30 kilometres to go and about 12 kilometres to the big climb.
The team did a great job at the front before the climbing setting me up perfectly to launch an attack.
Jacob Moe took off at the foot of the climb with me in his wheel and I soon moved past him into a solo lead.
I felt like no-one was going to catch me, but right after the summit Silence – Lotto’s De Greef caught up with me. Fortuneately he is after me in the GC and I can easily outsprint him.
Vandevelde and Sioutsou also tried to go but they were reeled in by the chasing pack.
Me and De Greef kept the pack on the distance though. Or well, I did because I was doing all the work as I was absolute going flat out down the descend before we started on the first of the two small lumps. Apparently there was a reason De Greef wasn’t doing any work because he seemed in big trouble at the first little hill.
And on the second of the two lumps he cracked and I started moving away while I could see the green kite up the road.
I looked back over my shoulder with 50 metres to go and I was way ahead of the pack. With the win I only needed 20 seconds on the pack to win the race and that I will easily get. I raised my hands in delight to celebrate the biggest win of my career so far.
And there was no doubt about the outcome. The pack arrived a whopping 1’31 later meaning I was the comfortable winner of the 2008 Post Danmark Rundt. I couldn’t believe it and I didn’t understand when my teammates came rushing to me to congratulate me after the stage. This is definitely the greatest achievement so far of my career. It doesn’t sound like much to the guys I want to compete against in the classics in the future but they have been here too once and I couldn’t be more thrilled with this win.

Next up is Giro del Lazio and Tre Valli Varesine, after that it's time for JAJ's last race of the season, it's a surprise which one it is. It won't be the last if he's selected to ride for Denmark at the worlds

I know which team JAJ will be riding for next season, and yes it is a ProTour team, but that's all I want to say about that so far.

Jonas' Corner
Just a heads up on how I'm going to end my season. The team has managed to secure places in Giro del Lazio and Tre Valli Varesin and I'll race both of these. Then I'm off to Tour de Pologne where we have recieved a wildcard since we were the only team to apply for one. I'm really looking forward to racing my first ProTour race and I hope I can pull off a few good results so that the ProTour teams really notice here right before the off-season. The best news however is that I have been selected to ride the World Road Race Championships in Varese for the Danish National Team. The team coach Brian Holm told me the day after Post Danmark Rundt that he wanted me racing there, so off I'll go. I'll race with Matti Breschel, Nicki Sørensen, Niki Østergaard, Jacob Moe Rasmussen, Michael Blaudzun and Lars Ytting Bak.
Also I just caught up with Continental Individual Standings where I'm ranked 12th after Post Danmark Rundt, which is way above what I though would be possible. That's it for now I'm off to Italy for some racing.

Giro del Lazio
I’m very happy we’re taking part in this race as this is kind of races I want to win in the future I’m still in pretty good form but I don’t think I have the required punch yet to compete for the win as there’s some big riders lining up for this race, but hopefully I can do a top 10.
We go right to the finale. 7 riders managed to break clear before the final climb to the finish line. They were Gilberto Simoni, Ivan Rovny, Dario Cataldo, Peter Velits, Dainius Kairelis, Daniele Pietropolli and Francesco Bellotti.
As we approached the climb it became clear to me that I should have went with them because they had a solid gap as we entered the climb. Nevertheless I attacked in hope of catching up.
I gave it my best shot but I wasn’t going to win today (not that I though I would).
Instead the U23 World RR Champion Peter Velits launched a decisive attack in the leading group with a few kilometres to go.
Simoni and Rovny started gaining on him on the very final bit of the race but Velits held on narrowly to secure a great win for the young talent.
I’m happy with 8th as I score myself additional points to the Continental Rankings. Next race is another Italian one-day race, namely Tre Valli Varesine which is very similar to this one.

Tre Valli Varesine
This is the final one-day race of my season so I hope I can do a top 10 like in Giro del Lazio. My form is decreasing right now and the lenght of the season is starting to get to me. Fortuneately Tour de Pologne is my last race of the season.
We skip the first part and go directly to the finale where Pagoto started things.
But it was the big stars of this race Di Luca and Garzelli who took the lead ahead of the final climb, while I yet again waited for the climb to come, mostly because I felt I couldn’t keep up on the flat with my tired legs.
Di Luca launched a powerful attack at Garzelli just before the steep finishing climb.
But Garzelli kept his cool and reeled the 2007 Giro winner in as he countered him on the climb. Di Luca had no response while JJ Cobo was nearing in on him.
Meanwhile I had made my move in the pack and managed to break clear.
Garzelli claimed the win of Cobo and Mugerli as Di Luca faded to 5th.
Another satisfying race for me as I went one better than Giro del Lazio claiming 7th place to secure some valuable point on Continental Individual Rankings. I should be sure to finish in the top 20 now.

Tour de Pologne – Stage 1
Brixia Tour, Giro del Lazio and Tre Valli Varesine were all great experiences for me as I got to ride together with some of the best riders in the world and even beat them on a few occasions. But this is even more special. The country isn’t as special as Italy but the race is, mostly because it’s ProTour meaning all the biggest teams of the world is here and eventhough I’m tiring out right now after a long season I think I can pull myself together for this last race and try to show myself off like I’ve done in the Italian races.
Today’s first stage was a very short team time trial. Team Milram nailed it while we settled for a decent 10th. Not much to report besides that, but I hope I can be up there with the best on the two final stages as they both suit me very well and the competition isn’t as stiff as I feared it would be.
