Tour of Georgia - Stage 7
The final stage in the Tour of Georgia, the circuit through Atlanta would likely come down to the sprinters. High road would look to set up Greipel for the sprint and settle for second in the general classification.
The team was well placed as the sprint began, and Sieberg led Greipel out perfectly. Greipel took the win and Sieberg held on for second. An outstanding finish to the race.
While we didn't get the race win we hoped for, we did take second and won the points and mountain jerseys. A solid ride for the team.

Liege-Bastogne-Liege
The last major hilly classic of the year, High Road will be trying to get a strong result from Kirchen and keep working to get Michael Rogers into form.
The team:
Leader: Kim Kirchen
Free: Michael Rogers
Free: Kanstantsin Siutsou
Teammate: Tony Martin
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao
Teammate: Morris Possoni
Teammate: Taylor Phinney
Teammate: Diego Ulissi
The race was fairly uneventful through the first portion. A small break left early on and was pulled back in well before the finish. As the pelaton approached the later hills, Cunego attacked and the favorites all followed. Kirchen countered and got into the group.
Valverde and Cunego were able to keep away from the rest of the favorite group. The chasers put forth a strong chase and kept the two leaders from pulling away. Valverde was clearly stronger though, and finally decided to pull away from Cunego.
As the leaders hit the second to last hill, the steep incline brought the groups together. Kirchen tried to attack and bridge the short gap to Valverde... but he just didn't have enough strength. Voigt followed and unlike Kirchen was able to make it to Valverde.
Climbing up the final hill, Kirchen's ill fated attack came back to bite him. He cracked on the ascent at the most inoportune time.
At the front, Valverde clearly was the strongest. On the small flat portion after the final climb Valverde easily pulled past Voigt and took the win.
Kirchen managed to salvage 7th in the race, but we have to wonder if things would have worked out differently if not for that attack that sapped his strength. This felt like a real missed opportunity.

Yeah... but the backlog is huge. I have so many races to post it's almost intimidating. Plus some of these earlier races are a bit shady in my memory. I'm trying to remember the circumstances based on the final results and the screenshots I took... but forgive me if I make a mistake or two. |

Tour de Romandie - Stage 1
The Tour of Romandie is a pro-tour event and a perfect tune up for the Giro di Italia. With two time trials it doesn't really suit Kirchen that well, but he wanted to give it a shot so we brought him here. We may take him out if he's not feeling at the top of his game however. He'll be in a free role rather than leading.
The team:
Leader: Michael Rogers - This is the lead in race for Rogers leading up to the Giro.
Free: Kim Kirchen
Free: Thomas Lövkvist
Sprinter: Edvald Boasson Hagen
Teammates: Diego Ulissi, John Devine, Sergio Luis Henao, Adam Hansen
The opening prologue was a short 6 kilometer affair. A lot of top riders are present, but many put up slower times, showing a lack of form. Lovkvist, coming off a strong tour of Georgia ride, was able to take the stage win and the early leader's jersey. Kirchen had a so-so performance.... we'll decide overnight if he's wanting to stay in the race or drop out.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 2
The second stage of this race should begin to sort things out right off the bat. While not too sharp, the course is loaded with hills and could give some riders a time gap right off the bat.
Kim Kirchen decided he wasn't well suited for the race and didn't start on stage 2. He's decided to stay and watch and cheer the team on though.
John Devine went on the break today and took control of the mountain jersey. Devine has been doing extremely well in this role so far this season. While he's nearing the end of his riding this year, I think we can look forward to some wins in upcoming seasons.
But as almost always happens, the break was brought back with plenty of time to spare. On the final climb, the attacks started. Rogers made sure to be part of the action, while Lovkvist stayed back just in case this wasn't the pivotal break.
But the break did stay away. As they summitted the final peak it was clear this would be the winning group, with names like Rogers, Contador, Soler and Evans present.
The pelaton pulled the group back again on the down hill as the group wasn't working well together, instead attacking and feinting as the finish line neared.
Rogers decided that he'd have to push things if the gap was going to be maintained. He went to the front and pushed hard... then he begant the sprint as the finish line drew close. Were the others strong enough to react?
Yes they were. Five riders flew past in the final kilometer and Mikel Astarloza won the stage, but Rogers work was largely responsible for the 34 seconds the group gained on the pelaton.
Lovkvist finished near the front of the tiny pelaton in 14th. The two High Road riders are just inside the top 10 and within 30 seconds of race leader Sylvain Chavanel.

Yeah... Kirchen is my main guy for the TDF. Romandie was on his programme, but I didn't want to give him too many race days prior to the Tour and I already had Rogers in Romandie with his form getting real high for the Giro. Had to enter him in the race but didn't want to use all the race days. |

April round up:
High Road had a great April. The bulk of the cobbled classics came up this past month and we excelled in those, as well as getting strong results in some other races. George Hincapie won Gent-Wevelgem and the KBC-Driedaagse De Panne race, took second in Paris-Roubaix, 4th in Ronde van Vlanderen, 3rd in the Scheldeprijs and was easily our top rider this month. He also took over the pro-tour points lead.
Marcus Burghardt also had a good cobbled season, taking a stage win in the KBC race and coming in second to Hincapie in Gent-Wevelgem, to give us an impressive 1-2 in that race.
In addition, Klier won the Profonde van Drenthe for us (a race where we swept the top 5 places), Kirchen took 4th in La Fleche Wallone, Lovkvist took second in the Tour of Georgia (winning two stages) and won a stage in the Tour of Romandie currently in process. Hansen and Greipel also won Tour of Georgia stages.
Our sponsor confidence after April:
The April Magazine:
April Pro Tour rankings (individual):
Way to go George!
April Pro Tour rankings (team):
We're sitting in second overall. Hopefully we'll get some results in Romandie and Catalunya. May's focus of course will be the Giro. Michael Rogers will be our leader, and hopefully with four time trials he'll be able to compete for a podium spot.

Rund um Henninger Turm
This one day hilly race is mainly for experience for a few of our younger riders and to get some of our Giro riders who aren't in Romandie into race shape. An elite group got away on one of the late hills and Enrico Gasparotto won the sprint amongst the favorites.
Siutsou and Pinoti were our first riders across. Both are looking to be coming into good form for the Giro.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 3
Mostly flat with a late hill, a strong punch could give some riders some time in the GC on this stage. Devine went on the break again and picked up more mountain points. It's looking like he's a good bet for another climber jersey.
Alberto Contador led off the break, but our guys were real strong today and we got three men in the break: Rogers, Lovkvist and Boassen Hagen. Contador was able to stay away from the rest of the break members though.
Our guys worked hard over the summitt and down the descent... but we just couldn't quite catch Contador. Lovkvist and Rogers made one last valiant attack... but Contador still got 14 seconds on the chase. Rogers and Lovkvist rounded out the podium.
(sorry... messed up on the replay taking screen shots and exited after I only got the first)

Tour de Romandie - Stage 4
Another time trial, the 26 kilometer course could shake things up a bit.
Suprisingly, Lovkvist had a very poor race, finishing a 1'41" back from the stage winner, Mikel Astarloza. The results definitely cement Rogers as our GC threat and move Lovkvist into more of a support role.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 5
This mountain stage will be critical for our GC chances. Coming in Evans and Contador are clearly the favorites. We'll have to watch out for them. Devine went on the break again today and picked up more points. We believe today locked up the mountains competition for young John. We're very pleased with his work this season.
As the pelaton hit the mountains at the middle of the stage we noticed something...
Contador was struggling! He was hanging on at the very back of the pelaton. So we started relaying at the front... and he dropped! Rogers was now the race leader on the road! We kept the pace high over the hills and flat and the pelaton shrank to only 50 or so riders due to the pace.
At the base of the final hill, Moreau made a move and we decided to counter with Rogers and Lovkvist making the break.
But Evans had more energy and kept going to form a duo with Moreau ahead of the chasing group. The two of them began pulling away, but Rogers needed to regain his win and was forced to let them go.
Lovkvist worked hard while Rogers regained his strength, eventually being forced to fall back to the group behind. Then as the finish approached Soler attacked and Rogers tried to follow.
But Rogers just didn't have the legs. Soler got away by just a bit too, while Rogers faded back to finish with the pursuit group. Meanwhile Evans powered away from Moreau in the final meters of the climb to take the stage win, and a comfortable lead over Rogers in the GC.
Contador finished the race nearly twenty minutes down. What happened to him today?

Tour de Romandie - Stage 6
The final stage of the tour of Romandie, this is too flat for Rogers to gain any ground realistically. Instead we'll work on getting Boassen Hagen in place for the stage win and insure Rogers keeps his second place finish.
The stage was pretty uneventful and the break was brought in well before the finish. The downhill finish worried us a bit, so we decided to ride agressively. With 8km to go, Rogers attacked, dragging Lovkvist and Boassen Hagen along to get them free of the pack.
Rogers burned himself out working to get Boassen Hagen free, then Lovkvist took over as Rogers started to tire. As soon as it was reasonable, Boassen Hage surged past Lovkvist and began his sprint. The pelaton was closing fast however.
But Edvald with that kind of lead wasn't going to get caught. He easily kept his back and won the stage handily.
But Cadel Evans scored a suprising 3rd on the stage... which was just enough to give him the points jersey over Boassen Hagen. We missed that threat... which gave the great finish a slight tinge of disappointment.
On the positive side, we got second and 7th in the overall, while no CSC rider finished in the points. This will help in the pro-tour team rankings. Devine also won another mountains classification.
Stage Results:
1 Edvald Boasson Hagen Team High Road 3h48'44

4 Jours de Dunkerque - Stage 1
This race overlaps with the Giro, so many of our top guys who are in form won't be racing here. We've put together a solid team though that has some sprint ability and some of our cobbled riders who are still in decent form.
Leader: Roger Hammond
Free: Andreas Klier
Sprinter: Gerald Ciolek
Teammate: Marcel Sieberg, Vicente Reynès, Servais Knaven, Bert Grabsch, Craig Lewis
This is a very flat stage that should favor the sprinters. We'll be working for Ciolek.
Unfortunately, Ciolek did not have a good day. As the jockeying for sprint positions started his leadout man (Sieberg) lost Hammond's wheel (who was trying to position them near the front. While Sieberg searched for a place to latch on, Hammond grabbed Florian Vachon's wheel... which turned out to be a great idea as he won the stage!
Hammond ended up in third. It's too bad Ciolek and Sieberg lost Hammond's wheel... this probably could have been a win for us.
Stage Results:
1 Florian Vachon Roubaix Lille Métropole 4h24'36

4 Jours de Dunkerque - Stage 2
Another flat sprint stage. We'll try to do a better job of setting up Ciolek for the race today.
The pack wasn't very well organized leading up to the sprint. Sieberg towed Ciolek up to the front when it became clear that nobody else was going to set up a good train.
Sieberg led Ciolek out nicely, and Ciolek came through with a powerful finish to take the stage. Sieberg hang on for 3rd to give us two podium spots.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 1
Here it is folks, the first Grand Tour of the 2008 season. The Giro is climber's delight with sharp inclines that can test even the most talented climbers. An interesting wrinkle in this year's race is the fact there are FOUR time trials... the team time trial in stage one and 3 others ending with the final stage. This isn't the norm for Giros, so we could see some interesting racing.
There are a number of big names racing in the Giro this year. Aside from the High Road squad, you have Thomas Dekker and Robert Gesink from Rabobank, Davide Rebellin of Gerolsteiner, Jens Voigt of CSC, Chris Horner of Astana, Mauricio Soler of Barloworld, Yaroslav Popovych of Silence-Lotto, Danillo Di Luca and Paolo Salvodelli of LPR, Leonardo Piepoli and Riccardo Riccò of Saunier Duval - Scott, Vincenzo Nibali of Liquigas, José Rujano of Caisse d'Epargne, Pietro Caucchioli of Credit Agricolae and Damiano Cunego of Lampre.
High Road's team is solid. Rogers will lead the team, Boassen Hagen and Greipel will contest the flat sprints, Siutsou and Ulissi will have some freedom to chose what to do on some stages and the rest will be helpers.
Leader: Michael Rogers
Sprinters: Andre Greipel/Edvald Boassen Hagen
Free: Kanstantsin Siutsou/Diego Ulissi
Teammate: Marco Pinotti, Marcus Burghardt, Morris Possoni, Sergio Luis Henao
Despite Eisel wanting to race here, we decided to have him stay home. We really want him to focus on the Vuelta and the course doesn't have enough purely flat sprint stages to be worth the investment in race days. He was a bit upset, but overall he took it much better than we expected. He's scheduled for a nice liesure trip with a few other riders in a week or so and I expect that to take his mind off things.
This is an important race for our sponsors, and we've got a goal to win a stage here... let's see if we can get that over with right out of the gate.
The first stage is a 30km long team time trial. We've got a solid TT squad here and many other teams are lacking a bit in that area. Plus all of our guys are in good to great form at this point.
And when it was all said and done, only Rabobank and Gerolsteiner came close. We took the stage and put Pinotti in pink right off the bat. Sponsor Goal? Complete... stage 1.
Of more importance is the time we gained on some of the top riders. We gained over a minute on some of the top contenders like Di Luca and Ricco, and over 2 minutes on Cunego's Lampre squad.
Results:
1 Marco Pinotti Team High Road 36'10
2 Marcus Burghardt Team High Road s.t.
3 Kanstantsin Siutsou Team High Road s.t.
4 André Greipel Team High Road s.t.
5 Morris Possoni Team High Road s.t.
6 Michael Rogers Team High Road s.t.
7 Edvald Boasson Hagen Team High Road s.t.
8 Sergio Luis Henao Team High Road s.t.
9 Diego Ulissi Team High Road s.t.
10 Rabobank + 4
19 Gerolsteiner + 5
28 Team Astana + 15
37 Team CSC + 28
46 Team Milram + 29
