It annoys me that Phelps is dubbed the Greatest Olympian ever just because he has won the most Gold medals. There are so many swimming event in the Olympics which really arent too dissimilar for someone as good as he is.

Most Successful Olympian in terms of Gold Medals? Yes
Greatest ever Olympic Swimmer? Probably
Greatest Olympian ever? No

Also - whats with some Americans calling him the "winningest Olympic athlete ever"? They do know that winningest isnt a real word right?

Its America, we don't care about grammar

And basketball *cough*2004*cough*, and baseball/softball who the hell cares about baseball?, and volleyball see my previous statement, and gymnastics China won the gold this year if I remember correct, and fencing I'm not saying a word, you are not the best fencing nation in the world, etc., etc.

For basketball, name one other year than 04, 72 doesn't count, for baseball, we do, gymnastics, we would have had a legit shot had the Chinese judges not messed with the girl who fell's head, and for the men our top gymnasts were both hurt. Also, alex, whose leading the medal count at the moment, I believe it is the US

CrueTrue
Deadpool, 18 of USA's current 29 medals are from swimming.

And i happen to know that some polish blokes made a volleyball manager game with a rather large database based on 2007.

Baseball on the other hand, unless your Japanese or boring, should just be cut from the games.

Yes, you are leading it, but like I've said all along, it's because of your amount of golds in swimming. I'm not saying you aren't a great sporting nation, you clearly areWink, I just don't see you as the strongest all-round nation.

I find swimming so boring most of the time. Its morealess the same in everyevent. However its neat to see so many records being set.

Baseball is boring, but it is still a lot more popular worldwide than plenty of other sports, like, I don't know, cycling?

Yeah, but consider United States of America, 300 million people, and Japan, 127 million people.

France, Italy, and Spain combined are only 170 million combined.

What if Merckx was riding today...

Well, some are just better. But, the amount of WR's has just been huge in swimming - and, there's no valid test for growth hormone.

Personally, I think the swimmers have just begun to eat more pasta like the Italians in the middle of the 90's.
Never.

I don't think its doping in terms of the sport overall, I'm not sure about Phelps though, as for the overall lowering of times, I think it has to do with that new speedo suit.

Waghlon, you apparently aren't getting what I am saying, in terms of worldwide popularity, cycling is more popular, what I am saying is that in terms of the statistics of popularity in individuals, baseball is more popular than cycling.
