Aaargh, so close!
Anyway, I feel Bennati also deserved his part of glory here, so cpngrats to Rin.
Thanks roturn for great and steady reporting from first week of Tour!

Great effort by Kittel to haul himself into the outright lead having been in a joint lead for a number of days without getting to wear the jersey. At least he does for one day now, though clearly it won't be for any longer!
At least Schleck is still looking alert and placing himself well. Gives me some hope that he will go on the attack early, and not be hindered by already having a low GC position.

Close fight there for the win, it's been a good opening week for my sprint train. A win, two 2nds and a third is a steady haul of points and results. Hoping for the survival through the mountains now of the sprinters, though I suspect I'll lose a couple before the end!

It wouldn't be a GT without a Bennati stage win.

Amazing stage, well written mate!
Spilak did really well here. Losing 30 seconds isnt a disaster, although both riders are extremely dangerous.

Great stage, great report! Really enjoyed the battle between Amador and Schleck in particular, but is was a thrilling and tough first mountain race anyway. Some huge losses for riders like Sicard or Keizer. If the favorites go for more action packed stages, we will see the GC changing every day. Which is great for a spectator-only like me
As said prior to the Tour, I'm cheering for Spilak the most, so glad he went for 3rd today, limiting the losses. Also nice to see Schleck bouncing back.

Seems like there wasn't a sprint in the final kilometre, which is a bit disappointing as I would have backed Schleck there.
But it's a fantastic start to be gaining 1'20 on Phinney and 1'41 on Madrazo, plus more on many other 80+ climbers. There's no reason why he can't move into the Top 5 sooner rather than later, but it's going to take something very special to get on the podium.

Keizer one of the weakest unfortunately.
He can't lose that much time on every stage of course.
Boom in the break going for the KoM is great though. |

Really nice stage that, could almost picture Amador and Schleck elbow to elbow in final stretch.
Certainly mixed the GC up a bit and Phinney took significant losses after looking quite solid earlier on in climb.
Delighted to see more breakaway activity from team.

I'm starting to have mix feelings about Henao now. He seems able to be one of the best 10 climbers, but after only one stage, it might be a bit too soon to judge.
Also, what the fuck were we doing chasing the breakaway... Vanendert was there and there's no way Henao would have stood a chance for the win today.
Too bad Vanendert didn't take the polka dots. We haven't had that jersey since Ten Dam and Van der Hugenhaben wore it in our debut Tour.

Great report roturn, really worthy of this exciting stage.
Nice battle for the stage win there, and congratulations to UBS for a big stage win.

Great report roturn, really enjoyed it. König doing surprisingly well in my opinion. I really did not expect he would attack with all main favourites here, probably it was one of his better days in this race. Would be fantastic result if he could keep himself in the top 20 overall. From the overall point, Schleck did well, nice battle for the win.

I have been away for a few days, but have just caught up with the action.
This has been a great race so far with the TT taking the respective specialists further up in the GC, but this first mountain stage leads me to think that the mountain goats are far from absent from the GC fight. Fothen was great in the begging of hostilities following the first attacks which led him to a more comfortable positioning during the last climb, even though he later faded and lost a bit of ground. However 13th in GC looks good so far, I could settle for that.
On a different note, thanks again roturn for your reports. Great delivery so far

NO WAY!!!!! I would have never expected to win a mountain stage with all this competition. I could not be happier, as far as I'm concerned this race is a success. I was pretty sure Schleck had Amador there the way he was attacking over and over again. He'll need every second he can gain if he's going to stay in the top 5, but we're off to a great start so far. That was a thrilling final climb!
Thank you so much for the report roturn, this is a great race so far.

I don't think Spilak and Pluchkin was all that dissapointing... Sometimes other riders have a good day, and to be honest, the difference between the four riders is not big enough to say that one should constantly beat the other.
I believe that the combination of the exact timing of the attack, and daily form was the reason for the outcome. 37 seconds is nothing on a mountain that is 20km long (or so).
Spilak 85/80MO/HI and 74ACC
Schleck 85/75MO/HI and 79ACC
Pluchkin 85/75MO/HI and 74ACC
Amador 84/75MO/HI and 72ACC
Amador is the best downhiller, Pluchkin is the best flat rider, Schleck is the best recover and Spilak the best endurance rider. They are all in the top 7 climbers imo. Only Cunego, Madrazo and Machado should be able to keep up with them, Alarcon could probably also keep up occasionally.

You are true but Amador won with 72 ACC?I saw Avin saying'Aceleration is the most important stat bar mountain on the mountains' in Vuelta thread.I thought Spilak's acceleration is as much as high as Schleck.Oh and imo Alarcon is a bettter climber than Cunego if he doesn't fuck up in one stage, and Cunego was better than Alarcon because of the maglia rosa and nationality bonus
