Stage 2 | Ogden - Ogden 173 km
i.imgur.com/S3MBfEw.jpg

My opinion on Josu who was our directeur sportif this week and in the coming Vuelta was immediately a good one. He wanted excitement and we were more than willing to give it to him.

Today on a profile which would suggest a mass sprint for a reduced peloton the Spaniard wanted to bring out the joker and try something else. He commanded Rast, Beppu, Irizar and Devolder to catch the breakaway before the final steep hill/wall of the day which lay 35km from the finish.

With the quartet doing their work to perfection and catching the break just after the previous long descent it was I together with Zubeldia in my wheel launching ourselves onto the steep 2km long section. By the time we reached the top the wreckage we had caused left us with a 14 man sized peloton, including Arredondo, Didier, Phinney, Sanchez and Devenyns as big names. Our lead on the rest of the peloton reaching a high of 1’30”.

Even though it was a course without earbuds nobody in the group was willing to work. Our forcing seemingly a wasteful spilling of energy. If it wasn’t for the experienced Didier.

He accelerated away from the head of our group and Zubeldia in all his shrewdness let a gap grow, nobody willing to chase down the Luxembourgian rider.

By the time the peloton caught up to us Didier his lead had grown to well over 3 minutes and it seemed nobody took the treat Didier serious as he comfortably rode solo to the stage win, lead jersey and maybe even GC win at the end of the week?

Stage 3 | Saratoga Springs - Orem 179 km
i.imgur.com/zSRWexZ.jpg

Why the organization had us climb up to high altitude for a mass sprint finish is a mystery to me. Orem was our destination today, supposedly the 5th best place in the United States to start a family. (God bless!)

Today our directeur sportif Josu showed why he has a ‘Carpe Diem’ tattoo on his bicep as he commanded the team to set up a sprint train for the mass sprint even though we are here without sprinter.

I became the lead-out for Arredondo as he sprinted to a more than impressive 5th place, once again confirming he’s our man for the Vuelta.

Stage 4 | Miller Motorsports Park 19.1 km
i.imgur.com/lyD6YfO.jpg

The almost 20km long time trial across Miller Motorsports Park wasn’t a particularly hard one with the first 8km going down in a shallow decline and the final 11km in a light incline.

With Didier, Arredondo and I all being in the top 6 of the GC, our job was pretty simple. Lose as little time as possible on men like Izagirre, Ludvigsson and Castroviejo.

Zubeldia who finished the course quickest of our team was clear in advising us to pick a heavy gear and just hammer away on it from start to finish. Advice which seemed to work to my benefit as I finished a mere 2 seconds behind the Basque time trialist specialist (I still got blown away by eventual winner Taylor Phinney by over a minute though.)

i.imgur.com/DdF0Inq.jpg

Both Arredondo and Didier lightweight as they are where less successful in conquering the course. Both finishing outside the top 30. Didier his lead in the GC on new number two Taylor Phinney reduced to just over 2 minutes. Arredondo dropped out of the top 10 to 13th, three places behind yours truly.

Stage 5 | Salt Lake City - Salt Lake City 116.4 km
i.imgur.com/tclMYci.jpg

With a rolling profile and a hill of 5km just over 10km from the finish, today was the day in which I could force my hand an attempt something in the finale of the race.

Josu agreed that I made a good chance for the win today and had Beppu and Irizar ride at the head of the peloton all day, the couple making sure the 6-man breakaway never got more than 4 to 5 minutes.

Those 6-men proved resilient though as Schildge, Bolivar, Zirbel, Nuyens, Lefrancois and Brown still held a firm 2’30” lead by the time we reached the final climb. The lack of ear-buds was to our team as sand to a badly oiled time-piece. We had messed up on the control and the breakaway would be duking it out for the win.

Josu not wanting all our work go to waste it was Haimar Zubeldia who placed himself at the head of the peloton as he rocketed himself onto the climb. Within 2km ripping the pack in half in a display of raw Basque power. In a futile attempt I accelerated away from the peloton with a quick jump, only Luke Rowe from Team Sky following, the Welshman proving of little help as we reached the top of the hill chasing 1’31” on eventual stage winner Nick Nuyens. Behind us a 16-man sized group with Arredondo and Didier followed on 14 seconds. Some of the missing names were Phinney, Malori, Craddock, Izagirre, Chavanel and Bodnar. Meaning Didier was doing excellent work for his GC!

The group caught up to us quickly as we passed 3 of the early escapees as we rolled to a bunch sprint finish for 4th with about 30 men.

I didn’t even have to lead out for Arredondo as the little Colombian easily beating the rest of the field with me in his wheel drafting to 5th, a disappointing afternoon coming to an end as my best bet for a win this year had just gone out of the window. Regardless I had to look at tomorrow, a day on which we could secure a Tissot 1, 2, 3 on the podium. The sponsor would be happy.

Stage 6 | Park City - Alta 162.4km
i.imgur.com/TKWh3aH.jpg

Tensed I shut my laptop down, unable to hide my frustration from Fumiyuki Beppu who had been my roommate during this Tour of Utah. The cause of the wrinkles on my forehead? A certain DS at Sky insinuating Luke Rowe was anything, but a wheelsucker in yesterdays stage.

Fumiyuki asked me what the fuss was all about. I simply answered. “Today I’m going for the win.”

With three climbs of the 1st category and one of the 2nd category today wasn’t exactly my ideal type of stage, but in the competitors field here I should be among the best 15 climbers I estimated. Nonetheless I had to play my cards right. With Arredondo in superb form, Josu was willing to take the risk of sending me out on my own.

As had been the entire week it was our team that had to control the race, never allowing the 6-man breakaway (one of whom was Sky their Salvatore Puccio, the more reason to not let them last till the finish!) more than 2-3 minutes.

On the first major climb of the day it was once again Haimar Zubeldia who drastically thinned out the peloton to a group of just over 60 riders by his hauling at the head of the pack. Wyss, Devenyns, Reichenbach and Howes still felt the pace could be higher as the quarter attacked out of the peloton in the hunt for the early breakaway.

i.imgur.com/Xgh7bi6.jpg

The two breaks would melt together on the second climb as a new leading group was form made out of Koren, Eviti, Puccio and a strong Wyss. Their lead just under a minute near the top of climb two. Which is when I placed my attack, with a few quick kicks on the pedals I accelerated away from Zubeldia overtaking beaten men from the earlier breakaway in the process. Only Devenyns sticking in my wheel as we dived down into the descent towards the leading group.

As we joined the leaders the gap with the peloton was around 50 seconds. On the shortest and penultimate climb of the day it was a peace of cake to leave the entire group behind me as I created a gap on the steepest section of the climb the gradient hitting a strong 14%. A gap which would end up growing up towards a minute by the time I hit the final climb as the remains of the breakaway were caught up by an elite-group of 22 men among which Arredondo and Didier.

At just over 7km the final climb towards Alto would proof my most difficult challenge of the day. Where on the previous climb a gradient of 14% felt like a welcome ally, here the long step sections were nothing short of an assault on my legs.

Josu gladly added to the suffering as he told me the chasing group was quickly gaining time on me. By the time I got to the flamme rouge the by Norman Hansen led peloton about 29 seconds behind me. My legs barely turning as every ounce of energy had sacrificed themselves for another turn on the pedals.

i.imgur.com/0smhZ5E.jpg

21 seconds at 500m. Shades of Paris-Nice back in March already started to cloud my mind as I grinded my teeth together one more time, tensing up my body to its very maximum in an attempt to keep the energy going to the pedals. 17 seconds at 300m. 12 seconds at 100m. And that’s where the Dane stuck! As I crossed the finish-line too exhausted to even raise my arms. But there finally was my first win! Plus the mountain and youth jersey in the process (Didier got the lead and Arredondo the point jersey). Open the flood gates!
