A breakaway tried to form but the peleton wouldn't let them, So the first sprint was for the Peleton. But no-one tried and taking some Points are Bonus Seconds. Just before the second sprint a 3 man breakaway formed with Merhawi Kudus comfortably taking the final sprint. The Break didn't get far with the peleton only letting them get up to 3 minutes. Most team's sent rider up to the front to take turns on bringing the Break back especially Sky with Gabriel Rasch and Danny Pate doing most of the work. The Breakaway just managed to stay out for the KoM with Victor Campenaerts taking the maximum 5 points. The Sprint trains started with 10km to go with Sky having two. Bernhard Eisel leading out Luke Rowe and Kanstantin Siutsou leading out Geraint Thomas, We did this because of the uphill finish and we thought both Rowe and Eisel would struggle, But Geraint wouldn't as he his good uphill and fairly fast because of his Track days. The Main lead out train was AG2R who were trying to get Davide Appolonio a long awaited win, His last win was when he was at Sky in 2011. Under the 1km Banner Danilo Wyss was in-front leading out Thor Hushovd, Appolonio was just behind him, Sky were several riders back. Appolonio get's a vital win for the team and himself, Fellow country man Andrea Guardini came 2nd with another Italian coming third Fabio Sabatini. A great start for the Italian's in Algarve. Geraint Thomas just missed out on a podium place coming 4th. Rowe came 6th with Eisel 9th.
There were 5 men who went up the road today containing Ian Stannard, Frederik Willems, Pavel Brutt, Alessandro Bazzana and Wiliiam Clarke. The first sprint was won by Ian Stannard with an easy effort with no-one really trying. The breakaway got up to 7 minutes but were was narrowed down to 3 ahead of the KoM with Ian Stannard putting in a great effort in getting 6 points. Following the KoM the Breakaway split with Ian Stannard and Frederik Willems going ahead, But this didn't last long as the chasers brung them in. With 20km to go the Peleton were closing in, So Ian Stannard attacked but he only lasted a few Kilometre. The Break were caught with 10km to go and the sprint trains started. Wiggins was leading out Froome and with 7km to go he attacked. But he was caught with 4km to go. Cavendish launched with 2km to go but went to early with a hill to climb. Under the 1km banner Daryl Impey was a few bikes lengths ahead of the Peleton. Daryl Impey took it in-front of Ben Swift and then John Degenkolb. All the Sky riders got the same time.
