@Both: It sure was a great start. Things can't always be great though
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sponsor news
As you may know Vacansoleil is in its last sponsor year this year. When Luijckx negotiated with Vacansoleil, the two parties couldn't reach an agreement. Vacansoleil now says Luijckx should find a new sponsor for next season. While Luijckx already started his search, he decided to keep the quitting Vacansoleil a secret. Now it has been leaked though. Negotiations with companies are still on and there is a good chance a new sponsor will be found due to the attractive riding style of the team.
Development team
This also has consequences for the newly found development team. Both sponsors of the development team now have three options: continue as a development team, stopping the sponsoring in which case new sponsors have to be found, and as last option continue the team as a team on itself. The rule of 2 riders going to the main team will go on, so in August one rider will join Vacansoleil. Odfjell has already stated it is very likely to prolong its contract, while we haven't been able to reach Projob yet.

Awesome to see Johnnie is winning and Khieu Tet taking the mountain jersey! Curious to see which way the team will go, but I think the last option is most likely to me.

The last option seems to be the best. Although I wouldn't mind it if we found a new sponsor partner. |

Great way to start the season!
Last option is best IMO

@All: You seem very united in your choice. However, it is more likely we will remain a development team for whatever new sponsor there is.
@Ollfardh: That's a bit harsh. There will only be a new sponsor, for which there are also 2 options: development team or independence

Great start of the season in NZ.
I think it depends on the new sponsor of Vacansoleil. If it is a Scandinavian/Dutch sponsor the team could stay as a development team, otherwise the team should go on as a normal team.

@All: You'll just see. What I can say is that if Vacansoleil relegates from the WT, the team will most likely become independent.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The stages
This time trial could already prove to be decisive for the race. With 22kms in length, time gaps should be quite big.
The first of 2 flat stages. It's not very long, but the constant hills could prove some serious difficulty for the sprinters.
The criterium in downtown Phoenix is the final stage already. Although there might be chaos it should be a sprinter winning.
Our squad
Armin Berg-Hansen will again be going for a good time in the time trial and serve in the sprint train.
Peter de Groote has taken his good shape from New Zealand with him. He is considered an outsider for the time trial and thus for the final GC.
Kristian Hammarling will be our main sprinter here. He is most likely to get 2 chances and with his good downhilling skill stage 2 may suit him very well.
Fatbardh Haxhi showed himself as an excellent lead-out in New Zealand. He will have the same role here for Kristian.
Khieu Tet Khamphan won the KoM competition in his first race. He might give it a shot here as well, although he might go for the sprint train as well.
Taeke Roorda will probably have the same role as Armin. He proved extremely valuable in New Zealand.
Ásgeirr Silferberg will also have the same role as in New Zealand. A good result in the TT is also within reach.
Djaja Susanto is last but not least. He or Fatbardh will lead Kristian out.

@Ollfardh: I'd say it's a little weaker here, and the TT suits Peter more.
@tmr96: True. A stage win would be nicer though.
@Shonak: It should be possible indeed. Thanks for the support.
@mvhoogdalem: We could stunt in New Zealand, so why not here?

Race report
Djaja Susanto is our first rider. He gets a provisional 4th, 20 seconds behind current leader Zangerle.
Ásgeirr Silferberg sets a provisional 4th, 3 seconds behind leader Schlechter.
Tom Zirbel crushes the best time: 31'14''
Taeke Roorda sets the provisional 13th, 58 seconds behind Zirbel.
Khieu Tet Khamphan is 51st provisional, 1'39'' behind.
Ben Jacques-Maynes sets the provisional second, 2 seconds behind
Fatbardh Haxhi is 66th provisional, 1'34'' behind.
Peter de Groote sets the current 3rd time, 15 seconds behind Zirbel.
Armin Berg-Hansen shows some signs of a good shape: 12th, 37 seconds behind isn't too bad.
Nathan Brown sets a really surprising 2nd time: 5 seconds behind! Unfortunately no podium for Peter.
Kristian Hammarling sets the provisional 54th, 1'08'' behind.
As nobody gets even close to Zirbel anymore, the GC seems a bit decided already.

BREAKING NEWS/ HELP NEEDED FOR FATBARDH
Between stages in the 'Valley of the Sun' race our resident Albanian, Fatbardh Haxhi, accidently loses his underwear! Not a problem, right?
Well there is a problem because Fatbardh is skint! He has no money to by some substitutes. He is looking for only $10 dollars to by some more from the local gas station!
Which, if any, of his teammates will help Fatbardh out of this messy situation? Will you offer up the cash? |
