Having completed our squad we decided to run some quick numbers to try and better understand our squad. Firstly our total squad size is 18, which is we believe the smallest squad in EPIC. From that we have kept 100% French having released Boucher, Fischer and Rollin. This aspect was important for the sponsors following the budget reduction and re-focusing. Hopefully we will never need a non-French rider again!
Next up is our average age. Following the cutting of riders and the signings of Gougeard and Jauregui our average age has dropped down to 24 years old! This is a young team but with some great experience from guys like Roy and Fedrigo. With four 25year olds that is the most common age of our squad.
From there we move onto Key Stats. Our highest average key stat is Hill at 71. Fighter is just behind at 70.5. For a sprint focused squad these are surprsingly high numbers and should make us plenty visible in the coming season. Our Sprint average is 69.4 well ahead of our TT average of 67.5. Mountain, an area weakened by the loss of Pinot, average is down to 65.7 and our weakest Key Stat is Cobble with an average of only 64.6.
Of course these averages don't exactly mean much but we do feel like we have a good squad for the coming season and that we will have a better squad year on year for a while as our riders and age, gain experience and improve!

#LeSon
Welcome to a small new feature for FDJ.fr's 2014 campaign. We are calling it Le Son, a marketing recommendation from TMM Sports Management, and it will be basically an interview feature. Rather than have a large team newsletter we will just drop in with various short chats with staff, riders and personalities from other teams across the year. Our debut feature is a double header! The following chat between Le Son, Faye Marcus and Pierrick Fedrigo took place earlier today.
Le Son: Welcome both of you. Let's start by telling us what your role in the team is.
Faye Marcus: I'm Faye and i am the General Manager of FDJ.fr
Pierrick Fedrigo: I am Pierrick and i am a senior rider for FDJ.fr
LS: So Faye, this is your first job at the top end of the sport but you have prior experience in cycling?
FM: Well FDJ isn't quite the top end of the sport this season. Yes it's my first job at Elite Ments level but i previously worked at several National level womens teams in Australia, the US and Britain. Prior to joining FDJ i was Assistant GM at Matrix-Vulpine in the UK. So i've got knowledge and experience of running a team having spent my entire career working in and around cycling.
LS: And Pierrick, you joined FDJ in 2011 and was here when the EPIC regime took over at the end of 2012.
PF: Correct. My pro career began with Credit Agricole in 2002 alongside such riders as Thor Hushovd and Christophe Moreau. I switched over from Bouygues when their sponsorship of the team ended. With FDJ i've won a TDF and Giro stage and had a great collection of results. I like the team alot, especially mentoring and coaching the generation of riders in Pinot, Elissonde and more.
LS: Now that the team has relegated what challenges will you face this season?
FM: Luckily it's not a big change for me. I came in and was given a list of changes that had to be made. No prior programmes or relationships to damage. The biggest task has been to cut the budget which meant firing half the squad. I didn't know the riders but it's never a fun thing to do.
Now i've been working on maximising our season planning. Picking out races to suit our skills and working with the trainers to design rider schedules. It's not hugely challenging for me but that goal of promotion is a great target to work towards.
PF: Initially i was told i wouldn't get a new contract and that scared me. If that happened i don't think i'd be racing this year. Luckily Faye saw a need for me as a Road Captain. From there it's been business as usual just putting in the off-season training. My style won't change and my ambitions won't. I'm going out there to attack and try and get stage wins, simple as.
LS: What do you think of the reduced and revamped squad?
FM: The lack of budget made my work simple, get as much as possible for as little as possible. Stick to only other French guys and target youth. We got Alexis [Gougeard] via the draft and he is a great talent, on the level of Alaphillipe and Senechal. Pinot wanted to leave so we had to get something in return. Tony Gallopin i have long admired and his improvements in the last year made him a key target so i am happy to have his all-round talents on our team. Finally Quentin [Jauregui] was a great steal. He's very young [19] but incredibly talented and i think he can become a better version of Vichot.
PF: It's certainly a different squad to what i'm used to. Lots more youthful energy around and a bigger focus on classics and sprinting. Still i know my place and i look forward to calling the shots and taking this lean and powerful team as high up the rankings as we can push. I think it's a great team and an excellent foundation for future successes.
LS: Is promotion a realisitc goal? Do you honestly think it can happen?
FM: Yes and of course! The top end of the squad isn't really weaker. Yes we lost a good stage racer in Pinot but we can focus more on our sprint trio. Our scorers are better than last season and we are better organised as a team. I think we are the strongest team in the division thanks to our real ability to score on every terrain and promotion, perhaps not a formality, should come without major concerns.
PF: Ok i'm not as confident as Faye but yes i think we can promote. We will need Nacer [Bouhanni] and Arnaud [Demare] to win races but we also need big performances from people like Artur [Vichot], Jeremy [Roy] and Mathieu [Ladagnous] to get as many points as possible. Some other PCT teams look very strong like Bardini, AG2R and Lampre and we will have to really work hard to earn the promotion. And we will have to earn it on the road.
LS: What's the relationship like between the two of you, as senior parts of the team?
FM: Pierrick has been of great support to me. He knows the riders, the team and the staff. If i have a problem or don't know something he is there to provide an answer or translate or do whatever i need. I'm very lucky to have someone of his experience and character on the squad and hopefully, together, we can make a friendship to take us to the top of the sport.
PF: Well i am flattered. Faye has been excellent thus far. She's made a few errors but nothing serious. She listens to the riders and knows what she's doing. Faye is so far making a good impression as GM and is getting stuck into the job. I am very comfortable working for her and perhaps we will be friends for many years if things keep going like this.
LS: Thanks to you both for taking time out to speak to us.
FM: No problems!
PF: Merci!
I've also done up the front posts so check them out as well

We can now confirm what our Wild Card applications are for Part 1. First off we are applying for the Tour Down Under. This season starter hosts a good number of sprint opportunities for our stars and the relatively easy route opens up Vichot to an outside GC shot. We really hope to attend this race because we feel we really could contribute to the action and results.
Next up is the unsurprising Paris-Nice application. This one's a given. So from there is Milano-San Remo. No Manie opens this right up to the sprinters and we host three great ones. Alongside them we have a number of attacking minded riders who could try something on the cappi near the finish. Not just a high class race but one we could really win!
Into late March we are applying to the WT cobbled races. These proved fruitful last year with a good few top10's and higher! We lost Pal but both Ladagnous and Offredo can both Top10 various classics and attack. It's a strong part of our team the classics specialists and we hope they get a true chance to shine. I mean we are certainly stronger than several WT teams.
Finally we have applied to the Tour de France. No surprises and like Paris-Nice this is a given Wild Card invitation. Beyond the WT we are targeting 9 CT races for Part 1 to begin with. With a high number of WT target races we have to compromise slightly on our CT calendar days but in the long run we feel this will pay off in the rankings.

The UCI has delivered it's responses to WildCard applications! It's all smiles at FDJ.fr as we were successful in all our applications. First up we tackle the Tour Down Under before moving onto Paris-Nice and Milan-San Remo in quick succession. Ending March in Flanders for the Cobbled Classics. We've also been granted our 9 CT races without question. It's going to be a great Part 1 for us.
To our riders, we will attempt to confirm your race schedules for Part 1 in the coming days so keep an eye out for that. There might be a few more changes than we lead to believe stemming from a renewed desire to promote and maximise our leaders race days.
Oh, and we got the Tour de France spot as was expected. It's going to be a great season!

With the Part 1 Calendar confirmed we've confirmed our Part 1 goals. Actually they've been confirmed for a while but we have to point it out because i'm sure the UCI wouldn't see them other wise. They can be found in the front posts, nice and simple. I'd also like to take this opportunity to confirm our EPIC rider schedules for Part 1.
Feunard: TDU, Marseillaise, Qatar, Oman, Omloop, KBK, Koerse, Dwars Door, E3 Prijs, GW and Limburg (26 Days)
Bousche: TDU, Marseillaise, Qatar, Oman, Paris-Nice, Crit Int, Limburg (31 Days)
Lumiere: TDU, Marseillaise, Crit Int, Limburg (11 Days)
It's quite a number of race days for Bousche but we anticipate a lighter Part 2 to compensate. Similar for Feunard. Lumiere has a few days as we save him for later into the season when he will be of real race winning quality. These are the final schedules for Part 1 unless you have serious concerns regarding one or two events. But the small squad size limits out ability to make changes.

Bonjour Faye
I do quite like the races that I will be racing in but I am confused about why I am in the Criterium International. It does have one sprinting stage but the other two do not suit me at all. Also, doesn't Paris-Nice have hills and mountains? Because that isn't my terrain.
Regards
Erik

Hi Erik,
Mountains and hills might not be your terrain but they make up roughly 1/3 (or more) of the calendar. As such it's impossible to give you 62 sprint days without signing up to 62 sprint classics, which is quite simple impossible. Paris-Nice opens with a series of sprint stages where you'll be providing a leadout to Bouhanni as we target our Stage Wins goal. The Crit Int is a chance for you to work on your climbing skills, you can't ignore them forever, whilst we also forsee a weakened sprint field giving us a great chance to take another win.
There is a possiblity for you to be removed from the Crit Int but you would not get those race days reassigned, they would just be blank, and you would leave Lumiere without a leadout man.

Aquali here and I just wanted to comment on the schedule reveal. I really like the additions of the races that were absent from the schedule given to me in private. it gives me even more opportunities to race with one of my brothers as two of us are now going to be in Tour Down Under and Tour of Oman.

Hi Aquali,
Glad you like the schedule. Whilst not a stand out rider your all-round adaptablility makes you a useful helper in most races. We hope you can beat your brothers as you improve across the season!
In other News: The Belkin manager predicts us to finish 26th Overall, which would be 10th in the PCT division. The primary reason given was out small squad size. Obviously i disagree with this prediction and reasoning. Our squad is compact, not small. We forsee no issues balancing a healthy WT and PCT calendar between our riders, aided by mostly looking towards classics where possible. Our compact squad then comes loaded with power and two headline leaders any WT team would love to get their hands on.
As i said in the Le Son interview i'm thinking promotion is a realistic target and i hope my riders can step up to the task. We will find out soon enough at our opening race of the Tour Down Under. The team is prepped for the season to begin and are fired up for the fight!

We have submitted our official Tour Down Under startlist to the UCI. This is the first World Tour race of the year and our first race. Getting a good start is crucial for any team with real rankings aspirations, including us. However we decided to not send either Demare of Bouhanni to the race, instead opting to use Lumiere as our sprint leader. He shares leadership with Vichot who we hope can land a decent GC position.
Alongside them we have sent our other two EPIC riders Boushce and Feunard. Erik will be a key part of the FDJ leadout whilst Aquali will be general helper. Our squad is a good one designed around challenging for stage wins and an outside GC position. We have no official goals and we are not setting any internal ones either. It's race #1 so i'm more interested in just letting the guys find their legs.
The UCI came back with their Counter Goals. No real issues with their Easy or Medium goals, we picked relatively simple ones so those slightly harder ones were expected. We had hoped for an easier Hard goal considering Elissonde's lack of TT and the general popularity of the Crit Int usually brings three or four of the big name climbers. Instead we got a really tough goal of the DDV podium where we'll have to beat almost all of the WT's best classics riders, sure thing UCI!

With either Demare or Bouhanni this seems like a rather easy Hard Goal to me.. remember, you're not supposed to get this done

Dwars Door Vlaanderen, the cobbled classic won by Breschel, Nuyens, Terpstra, Gatto and Terpstra in the lsat 5 editios. You're right it's a perfect race for my sprinters!

I don't usually put the flag in the header but for this i feel it's nessesary. Another PCT preview came out and has covered us. Before i get into the good parts i do have to respond to some horrible innacuracies. The writer seems to forget that i am not French and that i am a women. The comparision to a French Hitler was not appreciated.
Yes i get the humor but that was close to the bone, especially in such politically charged times. But moving on and he had some very nice things to say. For starters he wasn't obsessed with our squad size but was more focused on our quality. He thinks we should finish 2nd in the PCT, i'll take that because it would mean promotion.
He praised our leaders and our dedication to France and youth development, as has always been the FDJ way. There was a passing mention to the squad size as a potential problem but as i've said before i don't see it. Certainly less of a problem than it could be for Trek. Anyway i look forwards to the final previews and hope they are slightly more factually accurate.

2nd doesn't automaticaly mean promotion, you'll need to finish top 16 overall or best CT team.

#LeSon
For interview number 2 Le Son took a quick moment to chat to new boy Alexis Gougeard and slightly older hand Artur Vichot...
Le Son: Hello Alexis and Artur. Would you like to give us a quick introduction?
Alexis Gougeard: Hi, i'm Alexis Gougeard. I am a neo-pro for FDJ this season.
Artur Vichot: And i am Artur Vichot, a 4 year pro with FDJ and former National Champion.
LS: How has the off-season been for the both of you?
AV: It's been good. The team has undergone some big changes compared to previous winters. But for the most part us riders have been allowed to get on with things in much the same way. Personally i think i've upped my milage and i feel better than the past years at this time.
AG: Moving to a professional set-up has helped me a lot. I feel great and the trainers have really kept me in line over the winter period. I've spent a lot of time integrating into the team and making friends as well as training hard.
LS: Sounds good. Artur, you begin in a few days at the Tour Down Under.
AV: Yep the TDU is my season start. It's a nice punchy route this year that should suit me quite well. I've been putting in the training time to begin at good form rather than go searching in the first stages. Of course training can only prepare you so much. Even so i am confident i can pick up some good results.
LS: And Alexis, you begin a little bit late for the GP Marseillaise.
AG: Yes my debut is the opening French race of the year. It's a hilly route with a long run in to the finish. I can either help Gallopin pace on the climbs or chase on the flat for Plusvite. I am looking forwards to my first race and hope it goes well.
LS: Faye Marcus has said that she expects you Alexis to be the next French winner of Liege-Bastogne-Liege! Do you think that is possible?
AG: Not this year that's for sure! My skills are on those short hill climbs so hopefully i will grow into a good puncher for those one-day classics. How long that will take i don't know but i do think i can become good enough to win LBL. Faye has made clear i am the teams big development focus. She chose to draft me over many other riders for which i am grateful.
LS: Artur, do you think he can win a Monument?
AV: In 3-4 years yes i do. He's got more raw talent than i do and a longer time to develop that talent. Luckily for me i am still better so should get another season of protected role in the team before he pushes be downwards.
LS: Well thank you both for a quick chat, and we will talk again later in the year!
AG: No problems, good talk.
AV: Thanks and we'll see you around.

Arnaud Demare opens his account for the year in Qatar! No hanging about he bags a stage win day 1 of the race courtesy of a rather nice lead-out from Orica. Ladagnous, Roy, Soupe and Roux also finished inside the Top20, and Bousche was just 22nd! An excellent day out to boost the season.
Aquali Feunard was on the move early in the TDU trying to make the breakaway. We've also seen Vichot trying to attack on Stage 2 there. Our sprint leader Plusvite de la Lumiere has been undwhelming so far but if he sticks at it a result will come eventually.
