The fifth stage of this year's Giro should be won by a punchy sprinter, although it also is a day for the breakaway. I will try to get a good placing.
The Race
A four man group got away early on. It included my good friend Peter Kennaugh. He was joined by Sergant of Radioshack, Dowsett of Movistar, and Keisse of Omega-Pharma.
At the 50 km to go mark, the four escapees still lead by around 4 min 45 sec over the charging peloton.
With 20 km to go, Kennaugh summits the last KOM point solo, leading the other 3 riders by 25 seconds. Peter is ahead of the bunch by 1 30.
With 10 km to go, poor Kennaugh is about to get caught. His lead is only 30 seconds, and there are still 2 uphill sections left.
With 8 km to go, Quintana has surprisingly attacked the bunch! He surely can't actually stay away can he?
The Colombian can't stay away, and was swept up around the 3 km mark. With 1 km to go Gerrans is just flying away from the rest of the field. Did he mistime the finish?
No he didn't as the Australian Road Race Champion takes the 5th stage of the Giro. Martin just misses the win taking second. I suprisingly take a third place and move up the GC into 7th.
Results
Post Race Comments- After all these great results, maybe I should focus on being a punchy sprinter NO chance of that. I will always consider myself a stage racer and I will focus on that. I admit that these I do have some ability in these reduced bunch sprints. Tomorrow's stage is pan-flat and I will take it easy after these last three days of good results.

The day's stage is pan-flat. I don't even think that the route goes uphill once during the whole stage. The team has been instructed to sit in the middle of the pack for the whole stage. This doesn't include Sutton and Eisel, who will contest the sprint.
The Race
A three man group got away very late in the stage, after around 50 km. It contained: Marangoni of Cannondale, Timmer of Arogs-Shimano, and Kroon of Saxo Bank.
With 25 km to go (not 10), the breakaway still leads by 2 50 ahead of the charging peloton.
With 10 km to go, the gap is still a minute and Kroon has decided to go for the solo win.
With 1.5 km to go, the breakaway is swept up by the sprinters who are going at it for the win. Who will take it?
Around the 1 km to go mark, the power went out from the Italian television cameras, which I use for my pics of the stage. Very unfortunate that we couldn't see who won the stage in a pic. The Organizers were able to figure out results from cameras, but they didn't give time gaps on the stage.

sutty68: Thanks, I hope that we can keep it up.
Today is the day for the breakaway. Lots of small hills in the last 45 kms. The team will just to keep Wiggo from losing time.
The Race
The day's break got away very early on in the stage. It included four riders: Landa of Euskatel, Kroon of Saxo Bank, Belkov of Katusha, and Kaisen of Lotto.
With 45 km to go, the four leaders have been reduced to 2 riders. Kroon and Landa lead the peloton by 8 minutes.
With 30 km to go, disaster struck. Wiggins flatted and was just getting back into the bunch when as all the other favorites attacked!
After 10 km of chasing Wiggins tells to turn he wants to go away from the bunch and chase on his own. I give some help and launch him and Wiggins is away on the Time Trial to catch the others.
With 10 km to go, Landa has gone solo and leads Kroon by 45 seconds, and the rider from Euskatel should take the stage win. Behind, Betancur leads Wiggins and Nibali by 30 seconds.
Landa takes the win! A brilliant solo win for the Spainard. Kroon takes second, ahead of Belkov and Kaisen was fourth.
What is that behind? Yes, that is Wiggins! He dropped Nibali on the flat, and has caught Betancur! He went from one minute back and crossed the gap on his own!

Today's stage is the big Time Trial. It is 55 km of rolling road, that favors someone with some climbing ability. If Wiggins is going to win the Giro, he needs to gain a lot of time today. I hope to remain in the top 10.
The Race
Johan Le Bon of FDJ set the first solid time of the day, he rode the long course in a time of 1 30 27.
The Frenchman's time was beaten by Italian Champion Marco Pinotti. The Italian rode the Time Trial in a time of 1 30 05.
Kristoff Vandewalle was the first rider to best Pinotti. The Belgian set the new best time at 1 29 41.
Vandewalle's time stood for around 75 riders. It was eventually beaten by Tejay Van Gardren. The American finished with a time of 1 29 16.
Soon after Van Gardren finished, I started by quest to stay in the top 10. The course suits be, so I think I can do it.
Van Gardren didn't last long at the top as Michele Scarponi beat the American with a time of 1 29 07.
Vincenzo Nibali was the next rider to finish, and he destroyed the time of his countryman, finishing with a great time of 1 27 46.
I crossed the line around 10 riders after Nibali, I rode a solid ride, finishing in 7th place. I rode the course in 1 29 04.
Nairo Quintana needed the time trial of his life to remain in the GC hunt, and he relatively well, coming in a provisional 3rd, with a time of 1 28 55.
Wiggins needed to deliver a good performance today, and he didn't disappoint. Wiggo obliterated the course riding a time of 1 26 02. Easily enough to win the stage.

Post Race Comments- I'm very happy with my ride today. I stayed in the top 10 by around a minute. Also, Wiggins did everything he needed to do today and more. I think that Bradley is in a great spot, with over three minutes to his nearest rival. I think that a finish in the top 10 isn't realistic, but I hope to be in the top 20 at the end of the race. Tomorrow is another medium mountain stage, and it has the first cat 1 climbs of the race, Dombro has said that he wants to go in the break.

Great win, Wiggins is smashing all his opponents.... so early and already with such gap, i would say the Giro is already won but it´s still too early... neverless, SKY is doing great.
Ian raced very well, gained time to Betancur, Martin and Majka, well done.

Sky Raided at Giro, Uran and Wiggins Test Positive
Team Sky's bus, hotel, cars, and everything else they had was raided last night by Italian Police. The police caught team officials with certain "banned substances" with them when the officials were entering Italy. The police decided to let them through, but they decided to act after they received info that Rigoberto Uran and Bradley Wiggins had both tested positive for AICAR. The police found all kinds of Doping products, blood bags, syringes, AICAR, EPO, and some masking agents for it.
They also found a list of riders who were taking the products, and how much they were to be given each day. The list includes: Bradley Wiggins, Rigoberto Uran, Chris Froome, Sergio Henao, Richie Porte, and Dario Cataldo. It seems that only the major riders were taking the drugs. All of these riders claim their innocence, but it is expected that they will be slapped with two year bans. Sky has withdrawn from the Giro, more details to come.
