Great attack by Jean. Good to see Vichot starting strongly. Onwards and upwards.

The final day takes us through another heap of hills. We finish this Tour Med in Grasse, the Perfume city!

Goals

Team Orders: Vichot is our main priority. It would be great to keep Veikkanen in the top 10, too!
Individual Orders: You're the man for the job, Jean. Protect Veikkanen all day long.

Race

I did what I was told. I felt actually pretty fresh, considering yesterday's attack.

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/med502_zpsdeea062b.jpg

Team Sky worked hard all day, protecting leader Froome.

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/med503_zps2de46ee0.jpg

Betancur flashed away and sped towards victory for the second day in a row!

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/med504_zpscda28d48.jpg

And then Vichot came into action!

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/med505_zpsa622859b.jpg

But it was too late to catch to Colombian.

I brought Veikkanen safe and sound to the finish line and that was the end of my debut tour!

Race Review

Pfew, it's finished! These last 5 days were real tough but so worth it. I now realize I made the right decision and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season! I finished an obscure 79th, but I went in the break one day and did my work for the team. I hope Madiot is pleased with my performance! I didn't have the chance to talk to him after the race, I'm already back home, now!

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/MiniBanner4_zps4ae8cbf2.jpg

Returning home, I was extremely pleased to see Gina back. We went to the movies that night and it was nice. But waking up the next morning, the exertions from the past few days finally sank into my legs! So right now I'm laying on the couch, taking it easy, and enjoying being served by Gina! Top stuff!

Reconnaissance Training

In about a week, the Swiss season kicks off with the GP Lugano.
Lugano is in the Italian part of Switzerland, surrounded by hills and mountains. I want to do well there, in my first race in my home country, so I planned a reconnaissance training.

Now, Gina didn't have any time to come with me, she has a job, so my dad, who's retired, drove me. He knows the race well, since he started here more than 10 times. He showed me the profile and send me on my way.

He took some snapshots of me during the reconnaissance, so I'd like to share them with you!

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/recon3_zpsc69a8e3d.jpg

I only did two local laps because the weather was really bad, but I know the profile now, so I hope to have a great race. In about a week we'll know!

Hey Jean, your blog is turning into a really good read. You had a strong start to the season in Tour-Med considering it was your first trade race.

You know, I used to read this dual-blog that two cyclists kept, but I think that a solo blog like yours helps us get to know you without too many clichés and memorising twice as much information Smile

I've been down these roads before. Just a week ago, actually! Four laps, 173 kilometer. It's a race without communications, so there will be tight control, I expect.

Squad

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano02_zpsb8e58bc9.jpg

Goals

Team Orders: We have no clear leader today. Just try to stay at the front and be active. I want to see the team colors in the finale today. Watch out for Ritchie Porte.
Individual Orders: Jean, this is an important race for you, so don't screw it up. Don't, I repeat, don't attack too early! Good luck, kid.

Race

I didn't want to leave anything up to fate, so I stayed near the front all day long!

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano03_zps08654159.jpg

About 50 kilometers from the finish, I was pretty close to the front, and the breakaway was within reach. I was just about to launch an attack when Kenny (Elissonde) pulled up next to me with a water bottle.

"Don't do it, Jean. Orders from the team car: wait!"

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano04_zps8e9a20b0.jpg

I started feeling better and better as the race progressed. Once the break was caught, the pace dropped slightly. Veikkanen then decided to work for me. He put himself at the front and did some amazing work, which I can't thank him enough for!

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano05_zpsf8d8d762.jpg

Roulston took a nasty fall in the descend! It was a sign of fatigue. Half the peloton here was barely hanging on.

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano06_zps50a71f69.jpg

Eventually, Team Sky took over the reins. It was the final lap now. I wanted to attack, but the pace was just too high!

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano07_zps2e3b9a59.jpg

Going over the hill, however, the pace dropped, and then I launched an attack! 10 kilometers left to go and I went!

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano08_zps155932bc.jpg

I didn't went far, though. Team Sky caught up with me a kilometer later and Pellizotti saw his chance to attack.

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano09_zps690e2673.jpg

Unlike me, he made it to the finish...

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano10_zps9bee213e.jpg

I still had a shot at the podium! In the sprint I managed to squeeze in between Rabottini and Kolobnev.

i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag96/JeanRemy1/lugano11_zps6a86bfa2.jpg

I instantly looked behind me, at the big screen. Waiting... Waiting... There's my name! 7th!

Race Review

Talk about a success! My first race on the home soil and I manage a top 10 place! I score my very first CQ points as a professional rider. On top of that, I'm the highest-placed Swiss here (believe me, that matters!) and I made National Television with that late attack, even though it didn't carry far.

I'm so excited. This was a great race. First time neither Gina or my parents are here and I finally do so well! However, one of my brothers was here to cheer me on!
