ProCycling HD - Special Issue Extract
The ToB Edition - The Future's Bright, The Future's Orange
The pinnacle of the UK cycling calendar kicks off tomorrow in Belfast. The race has its toughest route in the modern incarnation. 2 officially hilly stages, and another to be decided on the hills and topped off with a time trial, this will push the field to the limits over the 8 days of riding. But despite this, one team is relishing the challenge!
Node4 Rexona have been taking the UK by storm this season. They have taken wins in the Premier Calendar and the Halfords Tour Series, as well as wins in bigger races on the continent. They are the best placed of all the UK based Continental Tour teams in both the CT and CQ rankings.
Their biggest name has been Luke Rowe. Luke is 23 and was with Team Sky in 2012. He transferred across after failing to settle in at Sky, but has since made Node4 his own. Luke has notched up 7 wins so far this season and countless other top level results. Going into the ToB he is widely touted as the sprinter to beat on home soil.
The other star of Node4 is Michal Kwiatkowski. Michal is also 23, and was with Quick.Step in 2012. Again he moved after struggling to cope in the WT, and again has thrived at Node4. He has 4 race wins and numerous great performances. Michal may not be the favorite for the ToB but he will certainly be in contention.
But put those two aside, we are here to focus on someone else. Karl Hammarling. Karl is not the most well known rider, and neither is he the best... yet. In 2012 Karl finished a surprise 5th in the Tour Doon Hame, before he stole a Top10 on Stage 1 of the ToB. These results attracted some attention, along with his various performances to aid his team-mates.
Karl is now 19 and this season has really made his name known. He once again finished 5th in the Tour Doon Hame, but has added his first win since. This was a solo effort at the Halfords Tour Series Round 5 in Aberystwyth. Karl has not been seen to place a wheel wrong all season, and has been a key part of the Node4 lead-out. It is fair to say that there is a lot of excitement about the youngster. We grabbed some time with him a few days ago for an interview.
ProCycling HD (PCHD): Hi Karl, glad you could join us here in Starbucks.
Karl Hammarling (KH): Hi. No problem, but next time could we go somewhere quieter?
PCHD: We'll see. Let's get right to it, what will your role be at the Tour of Britain?
KH: Depends on how the race is running. Certainly i should be free lance on Stage 1, but Michal is very strong at the moment. I expect i will be his lieutenant for most of the race, keeping him out of trouble and in contention. I know i will also be 4th man for the lead-out.
PCHD: So a stage top 10, like last year, is unlikely.
KH: I would say so. I am not here for myself, i am here for the team. If i get the word from Malcolm i will go though.
PCHD: Ok, so lets think back to April. The Tour Doon Hame. Last year you claimed 5th, and did it again this year.
KH: Yes, it's a good race for me. It's all about the start of Stage 2. There are bonus seconds available early so an aggressive ride will boost your GC position.
PCHD: Do you think the Tour Doon Hame is your best race?
KH: Oh god no! No no no. My best race is the Rutland-Melton Classic later on in April. My results there are not as good, but my best rides have come there. Something about it just brings the best out of me.
PCHD: But you won in Aberystwyth, why not that one?
KH: That was a fluke. I was the break of the day, but the case never fully got going on the tough route, and it kind of gifted me the win. Yes i rode well, but it was not my best.
PCHD: It has now also been announced that you will represent Great Britain at the U23 Worlds in Firenze.
KH: Yes, the call came through a few days ago. I will be riding both the Time Trial and the Road Race. Edmonson will ride the TT with me. The RR team is completed by Edmonson, Kennaugh, Grivell-Mellor and Peters. No idea what to expect frankly.
PCHD: Do you think you could do well in either event?
KH: I don't know. I guess we are aiming for top 10's in both races. Hard to tell without the full startlist being available.
PCHD: Ok, lets look further ahead. What are your plans for 2014?
KH: Tough to say. More of the same i guess. I will get to out-right lead a few races which will be good. It all depends on whether we get promoted
PCHD: And do you think that will happen?
KH: If we do well in the ToB i think so. It's very close between about 7 teams for the bottom 3 promotion places. We have the advantage for now and i think it will be enough to see us get promoted.
PCHD: Finally, if you have another good season, will you look to leave Node4?
KH: I know that at some point i will have to if i want to progress as a rider. Everyone keeps telling me i have talent, and Node4 are doing a great job of developing that talent. If i do leave after next season it will be on good terms with Node4, and thats all i will say on that.
PCHD: Fair enough. Thank you for your time, and good luck.
KH: Thanks, see you around.
Karl lines up as part of the 8 man Node4 Rexona squad. They will certainly be a team to watch in the Tour of Britain. But they are not the only Brits to watch, see pg.26 for a full list of Brits to Watch, and also see. pg.50 for an interview with Jack Wiles: The Other Mountain Goat
Confirmed Node4 Rexona Tour of Britain Team:
Luke Rowe, Matt Cronshaw, Scott Thwaites, Philip Lavery, Michal Kwiatkowski, Karl Hammarling, Marcin Bialoblocki, Yanto Barker

Comment (not by Karl)
I had a full report written, then Firefox crashed. Had it done again, when my laptop crashed. So thats what you get... No chase came, just a highish pace towards the end. Didn't even sprint in the finish, everyone just rode themselves into good positions. The AI can be really weird sometimes. But it bodes well for the rest of the race.
Also, unfortunately, this race may be a walk over. Only Wegmann and Santambrogio have better HL than Michal, and he smashes them in TT... And only Modolo is better than Rowe in SP so that should be a good watch.
Finally, will post a screen of the teams stats in a minute, as they have changed a lot over the summer months

This game does not help me write a good story...
I apologize now for stage 2... no idea how the AI can fuck up like it did... It's making it un-fun to play, let alone read, sorry its not my fault...

Tour of Britain - Stage 2
Edinburgh - Glasgow
A 124km flat stage across Scotland. There are 3 laps around Glasgow city center to finish, in a stage that is tailor made for a mass sprint finish.
Karl wearing Gold!
Bardini and Node4 put in a lot of early work controlling various attacks, trying to hand pick the days break. Eventually a group of 5 were allowed clear.
After 65km, around halfway, the break of Gottfried(TSP), Driscoll(JSH), Luethi(ARH), Oronte(JBC), Cuming(RCS) had an advantage of 4'23 with Bardini starting to chase.
The break in classic Scottish weather
25km to go - With 2 laps of the finishing circuit to go the break holds 1'36. Garmin and Bardini are doing most of the chase.
10km - The gap is down to 43" with Node4 now in control. At the same time, further down the field, there is a crash!
Node4 chasing hard
The weather claims some victims
4km - Suddenly there is split at the head of the race! The Node4 train has shot off the front as the peloton almost grinds to a halt
FINISH - Node4 drive it home in dominant fashion taking positions 1 through 6! Furlan is the best of the rest in 7th.
Wow !

Comment (Not Karl)
The AI is making this easy, but not fun. Hopefully it will get its act sorted for tomorrows Queen stage in the Lake District. It will take something drastic to keep Karl from taking the GC now.
If any of you have suggestions on how to make the AI not fuck up please recommend them (and don't say difficulty as extreme would be too much, i think)
Karl: 9/10 ___ Node4: 10/10
