Vuelta à España 2012 - Stage 3
Roberto's first real test in a Grand Tour.
And we move directly to the finale, where everyone was eager to test their and their competitor's legs. Rodriguez started the race.
Roberto caught up, along with many more.
The organization of the Vuelta did not have to most eye for Roberto at this time, but more for the Spanish furies. So most pictures we have are when Roberto is riding alongside one of these Spanish riders. Here we see him pedaling alongside Contador, Wiggins and Anton, who was riding in his own Basque Country.
The front started to break, and looking at this picture, it's difficult to say if Roberto was breaking or was just preparing for the final sprint.
We have no shots left except for the winner, Valverde. But look carefully behind him, if that isn't Roberto Velásquez, battling Daniel Martin!
Apparently, Roberto wasn't breaking, but preparing a late acceleration.

Great start in Spain, after winning the NC and coming 2nd at San Sebastian. Roberto is the new star of cycling, it had to clear for everyone in 2012.

FreitasPCM: Thanks!
sutty68: Thanks, depending on the next races, he might go for the GC, even.
Avin Wargunnson: Still not the biggest star, though. A Colombian Champion and 2nd in San Sébastian would be well known on this site and among the cyclist-fans, but the general public won't know anyone until they really win something big
TimoCycling: With Contador around, that'll be extremely difficult. But then again, Roberto's potential seems unlimited, maybe he can surprise
Jakstar22: I hope so, too. Thanks! |

Vuelta à España 2012 - Stage 4/5
Stage 4
Interviewer: We are here live at the Vuelta, and I see young Colombian Velásquez leaving the team bus, let me get to him... Roberto Velásquez, will you surprise everyone again today?
Roberto Velásquez: I'm afraid not, the effort of yesterday is still in my legs. I'll have to ride my own pace and hope to minimize my losses.
The first important attack was before the real climb started, Rodriguez and Samuel Sanchez managed to get away.
Contador followed a while later. Clearly this was a champion who had managed to find the right form very quickly!
Like Roberto predicted, he rode his own pace, but he did an excellent job at it, staying just behind the main competitors.
It was Sanchez who took the win, on front of Contador.
Roberto sprinted to a 12th place.
Result

Not a particularly bad day, but not a great day, either. The following stage would be a flat one.
Stage 5
A late attack managed to hold off the peloton.

Vuelta à España 2012 - Stage 6/7
Stage 6
It was obvious that the breakaway would make it to the finish in this stage. That meant no stage win for Roberto that day, but he could move up in the GC!
Just before the final climb, a small group of riders escaped the peloton. One of them was Rodriguez. The fourth man might be Roberto.
A shot a km later confirms this, Roberto was riding with Rodriguez and Valverde, all looking to gain some time.
The final climb was very narrow, so no camera's were allowed, we only have the finish image:
Ben Gastauer winning the stage from the breakaway.
Valverde gaining time.
Here Martin crossed the line as 9th. But where was Roberto Velásquez? He should've crossed the finish line by now!
For some unknown reason, he crossed the finish line 15th, way behind Rodriguez, Valverde, Martin... We can only guess what happened, as there is no interview with him, no camare footage, no nothing. Maybe a technical problem, maybe he fell, maybe he wasn't up to sprinting that day. The fact is, he lost some time, but still remained in the top 10, so nothing had happened.
