Stage 3: Vuelta a Andalucia

Stageprofile:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0008andal3.jpg

Our Startlist:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0009andal3.jpg

Report:

With this being the first hilly stage in the Vuelta a Andalucia we have high expectations. Immediately we try to send Stannard in the BOTD. But he ends up riding solo for about 50 kilometers. He manages to pick up 24 mountain points though; we’ll try to maybe even get him the jersey in this race, as he’s not far behind!

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0010andal3.jpg

A couple of groups try to get away but nobody really gets far, so no real breakaways today.
Nothing special happens for the rest of the race, a group of just 20 are going to sprint for the win. The pace was just killing, so Capecchi fell back in the second group. Luis Leon managed to stay in the front group. But he was not able to sprint for the win… Bauke Mollema was by far the strongest today! He manages to take 15 seconds on the rest of the group! Sanchez finishes in 13th place, which means he’ll take the 5th place in the GC. Vinokourov finishes in 2nd place, and Kyrienka finishes in 3rd place. Capecchi finishes 39 seconds behind Mollema, in a 9-men group. About 2 minutes behind Mollema most riders come in. They are most likely out of the running for a good GC!
Richie Porte finishes 15 minutes behind. We don’t want him to force anything and he’s mainly here to help Luis Leon and Eros and building up his fitness for Paris-Nice.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0011andal3.jpg

Comment from Abdoujaparov:
Luis Leon’s fitness is not what it should be yet, so we are quite happy he managed to stay in the front group. Capecchi also rode pretty well, he still has chances to go for the GC. Tomorrow we’ll be looking for a stage win with Vaitkus. We are confident he can do it!”

Stage 4: Vuelta a Andalucia

Stageprofile:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0012andal4.jpg

Our Startlist:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0013andal4.jpg

Racereport:

Today is another stage for the sprinters. On paper it is. But with a descent on the last part we will definitely try something with Luis Leon. Maybe we can gain a few seconds and possibly get a win. If it doesn’t work out we will just sprint with Vaitkus.

So in this stage a breakaway gets away. Not really important riders in it, except for Betancur:

C. Betancur
Y. Talabardon
M. Bickarra
J. Aguilar

The peloton was too strong so they catch them quite easily. With about 20kms to go we decide something has to be done, so we send Luis Leon in the attack to possibly gain some time on Mollema.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0014andal4.jpg

But he doesn’t get too far. With 5 kms to go we try again, but this time we try to let Capecchi break away. This time it seems to be working, but it’s still 3 kms to the finish! Will he make it?

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0015andal4.jpg

His legs are probably exploding right now; he started sprinting from 2,5kms out of the finish! He gives it his everything and he makes it! He wins the stage for us! Eros Capecchi again! Our best man so far this season! Afterwards he told me he even had a bad form today, his legs didn’t feel good. But he saw the opportunity and just went for it.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0016andal4.jpg

While Matthews launched the sprint, Vaitkus was in his wheel. He tried to jump over him but his top speed was not high enough. Petacchi’s high speed is better and he manages to take the 2nd place. 3rd goes to Matthews and Vaitkus takes the 4th place. Another good result for Vaitkus! A top 5 now!

Comment from Abdoujaparov:
“What can I say? We are all so happy with this win, after a lot of 2nd places the team really needed this! One of our fans even wrote us a letter:

Dear Keisuke, why do you guys always come in second? Step it up please, do it for the fans! Kind regards, Sutty.

We let the riders read this letter and it really inspired them. They know they’re being watched on the television and that there are fans out there who support them makes them really motivated! We’re looking forward to the next stage. Capecchi and Luis Leon can win the GC maybe, but the stage is probably not hard enough. I’m expecting a group finish, but we’ll do our very best!”

Stage 5: Vuelta a Andalucia

Stageprofile:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0017andal5.jpg

Our Startlist:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0018andal5.jpg

Today is our last chance to win the GC. We know it will be tough, but I think it’s possible, we will attack and make sure we did everything to win! But first we have one other mission: the KOTM-jersey! Stannard is only 4 points behind number one in the KOTM-GC, Sörensen. After his long solo he got a lot of KOTM points! If we are able to send him into the attack he can win the jersey!

And… We succeed! We got him in the BOTD with the following other guys:

D. De la Fuente
J. A. Jorgensen
W. Anacona
O. Kaisen
G. Ermeti

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0019andal5.jpg

Only De la Fuente is sprinting for the KOTM points. Stannard immediately wins the first mountain sprint and takes 6 points. Meaning he got the jersey! For the rest of the stage he can just take it easy. He managed to stay with the BOTD for a long time though.

On the last categorized climb the break gets caught. Immediately after the summit Luis Leon goes for it, into the descent!

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0020andal5.jpg

He’s saving a little bit of energy because he knows the steep uphill sprint is up ahead. He can’t stay away and when the sprint starts the peloton with Rabobank in the lead caught up to him. He’s now sprinting for the win together with GC-leader and stagewinner Mollema, Rui Costa, Nieve and Trofimov.
He doesn’t have as much energy left as the others but he still gets a 4th place. Not too bad. Atleast he said his legs felt good for Paris-Nice and he was very brave.
Mollema proves to be the strongest once again! His second stage win and the GC-win is for him. He’s in great form! Second place goes to Rui Costa and Mikel Nieve takes the 3rd place.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0021andal5.jpg

Comment from Abdoujaparov:
“with top 10s in almost all stages and the KOTM, and the stagewin we are quite satisfied here. We feel like we could have won the GC, but the stages weren’t hard enough. But two riders in the top 10 is good. Capecchi and Sanchez did a good job! I would like to compliment the whole team and I hope Sutty is happy!”

Our startlist:

Racereport:

Our plan was to get Trentin or Bos into the BOTD. The lucky one was Bos! Our 19-year old gets to ride his first big cobblerace.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0024oml.jpg

He gets joined by some other guys. One of them, Sergent, is being an asshole as he doesn’t help at all. He’s probably just there to protect his leader, Cancellara.
Names:

R. Kiserlovski
C. Kern
J. Sergent
S. Bos
D. Monier

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0025oml.jpg

Monier is not on the pic, as he joined a bit later on.

Onto the race nothing really happens, but with 50kms to go 4 guys attack. These are a couple of very good cobblers, so this could be dangerous!

S. Chainel
S. Scheirlinckx
N. Nuyens
F. Amorison

Nuyens is the former winner of the Ronde van Vlaanderen, so he might be a treat. We decide to let our leader, Vanmarcke, stay safely in the peloton. The peloton rides so hard that they catch them about 20kms away from the finish. With the last cobble section almost there there are some fierce attacks involving Cancellara, Chavanel and Ballan!

Vanmarcke decided to try to jump to them, but with Boonen and his team in the peloton he lets himself fall back and hope for the sprint. But the front group doesn’t work together and they get caught!

Now into the sprint Vanmarcke is not placed very well, he is being lead out by Roulston for a kilometer, but with Boonen in front position starting the sprint with 3kms to go he’s far behind. Boonen can’t be caught anymore, he’s the well deserved winner today!
Vanmarcke finally gets through the front riders, and he jumps to a 2nd place! A great result for him!

Comment from Honda:
“We are really happy today; we couldn’t have a better race I think. In the sprint, Boonen was just impossible to beat. So we are really happy with the 2nd place, also seeing that Sep’s fitness is not really good yet.“
